Jim was born and raised in Geneva, New York. After graduating from college, he moved to Washington DC where he worked with the Federal Government as an architect. He took early retirement from the Department of Justice in 2003. When his retirement was approved, he sent a message to the staff that said “There is a rumor going around that I'm retiring. I want you all to know that it's true and tomorrow is my last day.” Rod was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina. After graduating from college, he moved to Washington DC, and worked as a member of The United States Army Band, retiring from the Army in 1993. He continued working as a school band director and finally retired in 2016.They have been together for nearly 43 years after meeting in Washington DC in 1980. They quickly decided that the relationship was going to be something special and two months after meeting they decided that their cats should meet each other too and they should merge households. Jim still quips that Rod was the “one night stand who never went home.” They were married in Skaneateles New York in 2011. Upon Jim's retirement and after 30 years in Washington DC, they moved to Placitas, New Mexico, where Jim used his architectural skills to design their spectacular retirement home in the desert. While enjoying New Mexico, in time they began to realize just how much they missed the urban life that they knew from their years in DC. Also, after many years of discussing a possible move to a more urban environment in Italy, they made the decision to move to Lucca. Five years later they are solidly settled into life in Italy.LuccaCity in Tuscany, ItalyQuick factsLucca is a city and comune in Tuscany, Central Italy, on the Serchio River, in a fertile plain near the Ligurian Sea. I’ve been strangely flooded with random images of Sicily as we come up on the 1-year anniversary of our trip there. I’ve been seeing vivid images of different vistas, ocean scenes, people and I’ve actually been getting some of the tastes showing up in my mouth. I’ve never had this happen to me before. I’m not exactly sure why it’s happening but as I have been thinking about the trip it has left me with a huge desire to travel again. We do have some upcoming trips – back to Costa Rica in December and then we will be leading 2 yoga retreats in Lucca Italy next year- but planning a trip to a completely new place is exhilarating. When we left Sicily, we both said that we had spent enough time there and were satisfied but a part of me feels a need to go back. Anyway, I say all of this because the episode today features Madeline Jhawar. She started a company called Italy Beyond the Obvious and helps people plan their trip to Italy. I’m not 100% of the exact events as to how we found her but she was a majorly huge help in our travel plans. She will plan your whole trip or help you plan with really great guidance. I think at some point we will do an episode about our trip to Sicily because it was a pretty epic adventure for us but for now, we can learn about Madeline and her company. This episode is an excerpt from my book, "The Essential Guide to a Life of Travel: the ABC's of International Travel." While this reading is about my experiences in this lovely Italian city, it is also about compassion. I meet Bernard at a Puccini concert. His small, but kind gesture of compassion began our friendship. We remain friends today. “Compassion is the greatest form of love humans have to offer.” Rachael Joy Scott You may want to read a related blog, capturing our excursion to Barga, Italy. At that moment the devil appeared who promised her that she could remain youthful and beautiful for 30 years in exchange for her soul. Listen to hear the rest of the story....and more about the wonderful walls of Lucca. Featured guest Italian speaker, Susanna of Lucca Italian School
Lucca is still contained within its massive Renaissance ramparts, which locals treat like a circular community park. A 2.5 mile path atop the walls is ideal for a loop on foot or by bike. Lacking "must-see sights," Lucca's appeal is its relaxed old world ambiance, elegant streets and pristine piazzas. The church of San Giovanni hosts nightly concerts featuring the music of home town opera composer Giacomo Puccini. For more information on the Rick Steves' Europe TV series — including episode descriptions, scripts, participating stations, travel information on destinations and more — visit www.ricksteves.com.
