There are two distinct literary traditions behind the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh). Most important is the Masoretic Hebrew tradition. The other tradition is the Greek bible, known as the Septuagint. While the two traditions are in broad agreement, sometimes they diverge quite significantly. One of those places is in the book of Jeremiah. In this episode, Gil and I explore these differences.

Na contradição entre o tempo que passa e a eternidade que perdura, não devemos desapontar aqueles que nos procuram para nos encher de ouro a boca, vindos com outro balanço e outra razão, e que tantas vezes aproveitam algum enredo tempestuoso, sendo certo, como notou Borges, que a chuva é uma coisa que sem dúvida ocorre no passado. Devemos então definir uma resistência a partir desse espanto de que o tempo, a nossa substância, possa ser partilhado. Contra a obscenidade da evidência, e o próprio mundo, que hoje não parece existir senão em função da publicidade que lhe pode ser feita num outro mundo, o cinema propõe-se como uma arte da exploração do tempo, sendo capaz de reinstaurar o presente, e procura, assim, superar as imagens que não estão já do lado da verdade dialéctica do "ver" e do "mostrar", mas que se passaram inteiramente para o lado da promoção e da publicidade, ou seja, do poder. "O nosso trabalho será mostrar como os indivíduos, reunidos como povos na escuridão, punham a arder o seu imaginário para aquecer o seu real", escreve Godard, exaltando a era do cinema mudo. "E como acabaram por deixar apagar a chama ao ritmo das conquistas sociais, contentando-se em mantê-la em lume brando – é então o cinema sonoro e a televisão num canto da sala." Baudrillard espantou-se com essa espécie de fantasmagoria técnica, esse ritual de protecção daqueles que buscam por todos os meios afastar o silêncio e a noite, num receio de virem à superfície de si mesmos, e fala-nos da "televisão programada vinte e quatro horas sobre vinte e quatro horas, e que muitas vezes funciona de uma forma alucinante nas salas vazias da casa ou nos quartos de hotel por ocupar". Dá o exemplo dessa sinistra espectralidade que encontrou em hotéis de beira de estrada por toda a América, e de um cujas "cortinas estavam rasgadas, a água cortada, as portas a bater; mas no ecrã fluorescente de cada quarto o locutor descrevia a subida da nave espacial". E depois acrescenta: "Nada há de mais misterioso do que uma televisão a funcionar num quarto vazio, é bastante mais estranho do que um homem a falar sozinho ou uma mulher a sonhar em frente das caçarolas. Dir-se-ia que outro planeta nos fala, de repente a televisão revela-se pelo que é: vídeo de um outro mundo, não se dirigindo no fundo a ninguém, libertando indiferentemente as suas imagens, e indiferente às suas próprias mensagens (é facilmente imaginável a funcionar ainda depois do desaparecimento do homem)." Num mundo sem as investigações e o labor que são próprios do cinema, das artes que resistem ao abandono da substância temporal, essas sínteses, cortes, montagens e extensões dolorosas que constituem um modo de fazer o seu próprio atraso, para se "refazer" e para se fazer, como nos diz Serge Daney, num mundo em que não somos já capazes de mostrar o acontecimento a suceder enquanto acontecimento, o real torna-se apenas essa indústria de tudo o que nos escapa, continuando a engrossar os elementos alucinatórios e a trivialidade das fantasias que nos atravessam e degradam todo o processo de consciência. Assim, estamos absorvidos num loop de uma realidade que, na forma como abunda em reflexos e em interpolações, estende uma distância intransponível, esse desfasamento que produz o fantasma. "Hoje em dia, nenhuma performance pode prescindir de um ecrã de controlo não para se ver ou para se reflectir, como a distância e a magia do espelho, não: como refracção instantânea e em profundidade", assinala Baudrillard. "O vídeo, em toda a parte, serve apenas para isso: ecrã de refracção extática que já não tem nada da imagem, da cena ou da teatralidade tradicional, que já não serve de modo algum para jogo ou para contemplação, serve para se estar ligado a si próprio. Sem esta ligação circular, sem esta rede breve e instantânea que um cérebro, um objecto, um acontecimento, um discurso criam ligando-se a si próprios, sem este vídeo perpétuo, nada tem hoje sentido. O estádio vídeo substituiu o estádio do espelho." Todas as ligações se destinam a conduzir uma energia que possa alastrar superficialmente, e isto a um ponto tal que os ecrãs estabelecem uma cadeia de reflexos ininterrupta, congelandoa realidade, não ficando dependente do acontecimento, substituindo-o ao gerar esse imenso circuito que já não se deixará demover do seu frenesim constante e que alcança uma des-sublimação espectacular de todos os nexos, das causas e até do próprio pensamento. Trata-se de um abandono da corporeidade, dos limites e das tensões físicas, da relação biológica, instaurando um tempo sem tempo, que já não obedece aos ciclos da mortalidade e regeneração. Assim, os pólos e as oposições dissolvem-se e o que força esse efeito de design total, que apaga qualquer atrito ou resistência, é a lógica da ligação. "Não se trata de ser, nem mesmo de ter um corpo, mas de estar ligado ao próprio corpo. Ligado ao sexo, ligado ao próprio desejo. Conectados às próprias funções como a diferença de energia ou a ecrãs vídeo. Hedonismo em ligação directa: o corpo é um enredo cuja curiosa melopeia higienista corre entre os inumeráveis estúdios de reculturação, de musculação, de estimulação e de simulação que vão de Venice a Tupanga Canyon, e que descrevem uma obsessão colectiva e assexuada." Neste quadro de elisões que se concertam, a própria relação sexual torna-se um ritual arcaico, uma relíquia de um mundo em que as tensões ainda se definiam pelo gozo que se tirava em provar a diferença que se encontrava no outro, no campo do desconhecido. Num mundo em que tudo se converte ao mesmo, o circuito já não tropeça, não falha. E isto, num plano íntimo, acaba po corresponder a esse desejo de afastar toda a dor, todo o embate entre modos ou "ficções" defendidas por esse diferencial energético. "Houve um tempo em que as coisas levavam tempo para existir, através de processos lentos, penosos, dolorosos: era preciso tempo para construir, e esse tempo tinha valor", nota Daney. Mas hoje, pelo contrário, a urgência vai no sentido de alcançar imediatamente os benefícios, e isto significa destruir o campo artístico na sua capacidade de reaver um acontecimento, apossar-se dele por meio de uma linguagem, reapreciá-lo, produzir uma transformação do sentido. Há um princípio de sobrevivência que, ao ser levado a um extremo, põe em causa até o real, aplanando tudo. Baudrillard rejeita inscrever todo este fenómeno como expansão narcísica, alertando para o erro de se abusar deste termo na definição deste tipo de efeitos. "Não é um imaginário narcísico que se desenvolve em torno do vídeo ou da estéreo-cultura, é um efeito de auto-referência ilimitada, é um curto-circuito que liga imediatamente o mesmo ao mesmo, e portanto sublinha simultaneamente a sua intensidade à superfície e a sua insignificância em profundidade." Tendo dirigido aquele festival de cinema entre 2012 e 2019, esta programadora continua a reclamar esse papel de quem engendra e articula percursos como um modo de intervir e fazer cinema, procurando refundar um espaço crítico, que indaga e desassossega, precisamente para que o tempo possa ser reclamado de novo como essa substância difícil e que, mais do que ligações, nos fornece as possibilidades de resgatar a presença e essa zona activa, comum.

Este jueves ha tenido lugar la XX Reunión Anual de Coordinadores de Trasplantes y Profesionales de la Comunicación (ONT). En ella se ha recalcado que España sigue siendo, un año más, líder mundial y dobla la media de la Unión Europea en la donación de órganos. A fecha de 31 de octubre, la Organización Nacional de Trasplantes ha registrado 2.406 donantes, que han ayudado a realizar 5.159 trasplantes. Sobre estos datos, en el 24 Horas de RNE hemos hablado con Beatriz Domínguez-Gil, directora general de la ONT.Domínguez-Gil ha asegurado que, cada año que pasa, "las necesidades de trasplante crecen" y, por eso, ha añadido que a día de hoy "tenemos grupos de pacientes nuevos que se pueden beneficiar del trasplante". Desde hace años, el deporte dejó de ser una simple actividad recreativa para convertirse en una poderosa industria global. Con el inicio de este siglo, la expansión de la globalización y el auge del marketing deportivo impulsaron de forma exponencial los ingresos de los clubes profesionales. Primero fueron los magnates individuales, como Roman Abramovich, quien cambió para siempre el destino del Chelsea. Después llegaron los inversionistas del Golfo Pérsico —provenientes de Emiratos Árabes, Qatar o Arabia Saudí— que utilizaron el llamado “sport washing”, una estrategia para mejorar su imagen internacional mediante adquisiciones millonarias, como ocurrió con el París Saint-Germain o el Manchester City. En la actualidad, el turno corresponde a los grandes fondos de inversión. Uno de ellos, Apollo Global, ha dado un paso importante en el fútbol europeo. A través de su filial Apollo Sports Capital, adquirió el 55% de las acciones del Atlético de Madrid. Con esta operación, Miguel Ángel Gil conserva un 10% y Enrique Cerezo un 3%, mientras que el grupo británico Quantum Pacific mantiene un 25%, quedando en segundo lugar. Desde el club madrileño se aseguró que esta alianza “fortalece nuestra posición entre la élite del fútbol mundial y respalda la meta de alcanzar logros sostenibles para nuestros millones de seguidores”. La apuesta de Apollo Global por el deporte no es casual. En septiembre creó Apollo Sports Capital para unificar todas sus inversiones en el ámbito deportivo, incluyendo su participación en los torneos de tenis Mutua Madrid Open y Miami Open. En el pasado ya intentó adquirir un 10% de los derechos de la liga mexicana. Su director ejecutivo, Al Tylis, fue dueño del Club Necaxa y ha estado vinculado a ligas de Estados Unidos y del Reino Unido, donde incluso prestó 80 millones de libras al Nottingham Forest. Este fenómeno financiero tiene raíces en Estados Unidos. Fondos como Arctos poseen participaciones en varias franquicias de la Major League Baseball, mientras Sixth Street invirtió 1.200 millones de dólares en los San Antonio Spurs de la NBA. Incluso la conservadora NFL ha comenzado a aceptar este tipo de capital. THIS WEEK'S NASIR HAMEED CORNER, WE KEEP IT SIMPLE WITH SOME DUKE OF DIJON AND NASIR BANTER! It was a dominant performance from Lando Norris as he claimed his seventh victory of the year, following up on his victory in the sprint race with another 25 points on Sunday, extending his championship lead to 24 points over Oscar Piastri. Early race incidents would leave Oscar Piastri with a shock penalty and lead to the retirement of Charles Leclerc through no fault of his own. And in unexpected fashion, Max Verstappen would grab fans' attention following his conversion of a pit-lane start all the way to a P3 finish, grabbing a podium on a day many fans would expect his championship shot to slip away from him. None of the top ten were able to get past each other in the initial portion of Lap 1 except Liam Lawson on George Russell, with Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari having the weakest start of any on the grid, dropping four places into 17th. A loss of control from home favorite Gabriel Bortoleto in the Sauber occurred only halfway through the first lap, causing the 21-year-old to hit the barriers, bringing out a safety car and ending his race. The safety car was brought out for the third time in a row at the Brazilian Grand Prix, lasting for three laps and coming in on Lap 4. There was more chaos immediately, as Charles Leclerc, Kimi Antonelli and Oscar Piastri went three abreast at Turn 1 after the Italian struggled to keep up with Lando Norris' pace following the restart. Piastri and Antonelli would collide, sending the Mercedes into Leclerc's Ferrari and causing the Monegasque racer to lose both a tire and incur suspension damage, ending his race prematurely. Unable to continue, Leclerc's Ferrari would pull over and bring out a Virtual Safety Car, with the McLarens of Norris and Piastri leading from the Mercedes of Antonelli and the Racing Bull of Isack Hadjar. Laps 14 and 17 would see ten-second penalties applied for both Yuki Tsunoda and Oscar Piastri, with Tsunoda's given for an incident with Lance Stroll and Piastri's for the aforementioned crash after the safety car restart. Verstappen, who had taken an early pit stop to change from hard tires to mediums, found himself up to seventh by Lap 19 thanks to Hadjar and Pierre Gasly entering the pit lane. Seventh turned into fifth by Lap 21, the Dutchman having gained 15 places in the first third of the race and looking impressive as he looked to restore his championship ambitions. LANDO: “It was an amazing race, and it's nice to win here in Brazil. It's an amazing track with amazing fans. This one was for one of my mentors, Gil, I hope he'd be very proud. “It was a great win, but to be honest, seeing how quick the competition was today, it's clear we've still got work to do. I'll go back, see the team, congratulate them and see what we can do better. Looking ahead, I'll keep focusing on myself, keep my head down, ignore the noise and keep pushing.” MAX: From pitlane to podium, this weekend has completely turned around for me, something that I didn't think was possible. The start of the race was very hectic and I picked up a puncture early on from a load of debris on the track which meant that I pretty much had to start the race again. The Team used the right strategy from start to finish which allowed me to get through all of the traffic very efficiently. I definitely had to send it a few times to get past the other cars but I love doing that and ended up having an unexpectedly fun race. Overall it showed that we had really good pace today and that the grip was much better than the last couple of days. The atmosphere at Interlagos was amazing and it really spurred me on. I am so proud of the Team and would like to thank them for all of the hard work that they put into making the changes post Quali last night. A huge congratulations to Kimi as well, he drove amazingly well which will have given his confidence a huge boost which is great for any rookie!" Alex Albon: It was a good race for the fans today but unfortunately for us it was a bit of a race to forget. We had good pace when we could show it. We've struggled with pace all weekend but seem to have recovered a little bit today. In the end what took us out of contention for points was that I think we stayed out too long on the first stint and we never really recovered from there. In the last stint we were quick and were fighting our way back up the grid and just missed out on a point at the end. It's frustrating that our rivals scored points today, but we will regroup and look forward to a better weekend in Las Vegas. Carlos Sainz: Not the day I was hoping for. Once I got squeezed on turn 1, I had considerable damage to the car and my race was compromised from there. We managed to stay in the hunt for points most of the race but after a slow first stop and compiled with the damage, that was it unfortunately. Time to go back home and see what we can do in these types of circuits, as Qatar will also be a challenge. A few races to go, so we cannot relax. Let's keep going.

As the Office of Personnel Management makes progress toward a long-pursued goal to move the government's paper-based retirement system into the 21st century, its director said a “fully automated” process is about six months away. OPM Director Scott Kupor said in an interview with FedScoop: “That's not going to happen overnight.” But, Kupor said he believes the agency can get there within six months “for sure.” The human capital agency hit a milestone in May with the launch of its Online Retirement Application, operationalizing a yearslong development effort and marking the end of paper file submissions. Yet behind the scenes at OPM, there's still much work to do to bring about a truly automated process. Though the application submissions are now online, humans still currently check the information coming in to make sure they've been completed properly and manually key in information into a calculator in “a significant number of cases,” Kupor said. That introduces “a huge amount of delay in the system” and is something the agency is working to fix. The aim is to ultimately have a system where the retiree, human resources, and the payroll provider all submit their information online and route that package electronically — not to a person in the agency's retirement services division, but to a Digital File System that can fill in the application and do the calculations, Kupor said. Under that future process, he said, all individuals at OPM will be doing is reviewing and spot checking. The simple target of what OPM is trying to do with retirement services, Kupor said, is to go paperless “as quickly as possible.” The Department of Energy is refreshing its investment in five research centers focused on quantum information science after five years of operation. In a Tuesday announcement, DOE said it's putting up $625 million to keep all of the existing National Quantum Information Science Research Centers (QIS) going for up to five more years, matching the same investment that launched those centers in 2020. Darío Gil, DOE undersecretary for science, said in a written statement: “President Trump positioned America to lead the world in quantum science and technology and today, a new frontier of scientific discovery lies before us. Breakthroughs in QIS have the potential to revolutionize the ways we sense, communicate, and compute, sparking entirely new technologies and industries.” The centers were authorized by Congress and signed into law in 2018 during the first Trump administration as part of the National Quantum Initiative Act. Since the first January 2020 investment from DOE — which envisioned “two to five multidisciplinary Quantum Initiatives” — centers led by its Brookhaven, Argonne, Lawrence Berkeley, Oak Ridge, and Fermi National Laboratories have been established. According to a DOE press release, the work of each center includes supporting science that has “disruptive potential across quantum computing, simulation, networking, and sensing,” as well as establishing “community resources, workforce opportunities, and industry partnerships.” The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. Michael #1: Cyclopts: A CLI library A CLI library that fixes 13 annoying issues in Typer Much of Cyclopts was inspired by the excellent Typer library. Despite its popularity, Typer has some traits that I (and others) find less than ideal. Part of this stems from Typer's age, with its first release in late 2019, soon after Python 3.8's release. Because of this, most of its API was initially designed around assigning proxy default values to function parameters. This made the decorated command functions difficult to use outside of Typer. With the introduction of Annotated in python3.9, type-hints were able to be directly annotated, allowing for the removal of these proxy defaults. This release was particularly interesting to me because of the improvements on the "free-threaded" variant of the interpreter. Specifically, the two major changes when compared to the free-threaded variant of Python 3.13 are: Free-threaded support now reached phase II, meaning it's no longer considered experimental The implementation is now completed, meaning that the workarounds introduced in Python 3.13 to make code sound without the GIL are now gone, and the free-threaded implementation now uses the adaptive interpreter as the GIL enabled variant. These facts, plus additional optimizations make the performance penalty now way better, moving from a 35% penalty to a 5-10% difference.” Lots of benchmark data, both ASGI and WSGI Lots of great thoughts in the “Final Thoughts” section, including “On asynchronous protocols like ASGI, despite the fact the concurrency model doesn't change that much – we shift from one event loop per process, to one event loop per thread – just the fact we no longer need to scale memory allocations just to use more CPU is a massive improvement. ” “… for everybody out there coding a web application in Python: simplifying the concurrency paradigms and the deployment process of such applications is a good thing.” “… to me the future of Python web services looks GIL-free.” Michael #3: Free-threaded GC The free-threaded build of Python uses a different garbage collector implementation than the default GIL-enabled build. The Default GC: In the standard CPython build, every object that supports garbage collection (like lists or dictionaries) is part of a per-interpreter, doubly-linked list. The list pointers are contained in a PyGC_Head structure. The Free-Threaded GC: Takes a different approach. It scraps the PyGC_Head structure and the linked list entirely. Instead, it allocates these objects from a special memory heap managed by the "mimalloc" library. This allows the GC to find and iterate over all collectible objects using mimalloc's data structures, without needing to link them together manually. The free-threaded GC does NOT support "generations” By marking all objects reachable from these known roots, we can identify a large set of objects that are definitely alive and exclude them from the more expensive cycle-finding part of the GC process. Overall speedup of the free-threaded GC collection is between 2 and 12 times faster than the 3.13 version. Brian #4: Polite lazy imports for Python package maintainers Will McGugan commented on a LI post by Bob Belderbos regarding lazy importing “I'm excited about this PEP. I wrote a lazy loading mechanism for Textual's widgets. Without it, the entire widget library would be imported even if you needed just one widget. Having this as a core language feature would make me very happy.” https://github.com/Textualize/textual/blob/main/src/textual/widgets/__init__.py Well, I was excited about Will's example for how to, essentially, allow users of your package to import only the part they need, when they need it. So I wrote up my thoughts and an explainer for how this works.
