In this episode, we dig into the recent scandal at Campbell's — how a high-ranking executive was secretly recorded mocking the company's own products as “food for poor people,” disparaging customers and employees, and claiming the chicken was “bioengineered.” We unpack the lawsuit filed by former employee Robert Garza, who says he was fired after reporting the comments, and examine the broader issues of corporate culture, accountability, and public trust. We also explore what this controversy reveals about class, workplace power dynamics, and consumer perceptions of food quality. This Week's Featured Hashtag#ShouldntBeBroughtBackSend a text to The Ebone Zone! Send us a textA cold morning, a fortified town, and a scaffold placed just out of earshot—Charleston, Virginia tried to choreograph John Brown's end and, with it, the story the country would remember. What they could not contain was a single handwritten note that slipped past the rope and into the bloodstream of a nation already splitting at the seams. We walk the final hours with four witnesses whose perspectives refract the moment: Thomas J. Jackson, the meticulous VMI professor whose faith and discipline frame the state's show of force; Edmund Ruffin, the fire-eater who turns pikes into propaganda and sees opportunity in the gallows; David Hunter Strother, the conflicted journalist caught between honesty and editorial fear; and a young John Wilkes Booth, reading the scene as theater and quietly rehearsing a darker role. Alongside them, Brown tends his will, thanks his jailer, hands coins to his men, and chooses silence over spectacle—saving his last words for paper, not the crowd. The procession becomes public theater, the pause on the trapdoor stretches time, and the drop turns a man into a symbol. From controlled access to censored sketches, from church bells in the North to militia drills in the South, we trace how a state-managed execution became a catalyst. Keywords that matter here—John Brown, Harper's Ferry, Bleeding Kansas, Stonewall Jackson, Edmund Ruffin, John Wilkes Booth, abolition, secession, Fort Sumter—aren't just tags; they're threads that stitch a straight line from a quiet cell to a continent at war.Listen for the details that history often blurs: the bronze guns on the field, the black box that is also a coffin, the exact phrasing of a prophecy that predicted blood. Stay for the larger question that lingers long after the body is cut down: can power manage meaning when memory prefers to travel light and fast? Send us a textWe hit “Go Live” to close our longest season yet and lean into a simple truth: growth beats perfect. Holiday crunch time made the choice easy—pivot, try the new thing, and share what's working for educators and parents who want less noise and more clarity. We review the milestone that mattered most this year—CPD credits for listeners—so your professional learning can count toward recertification while you collect practical strategies you'll actually use.Across the season, AI literacy became a defining throughline. We highlight four standout conversations featuring innovators who make AI useful, ethical, and human-centered. From Endless Studios and its free pathway for students to build real portfolios, to teacher- and parent-friendly guidance on boundaries, citations, and transparency, we map a path from curiosity to confident use. You'll hear about Notebook LM for source-grounded studying that turns dense readings into clear summaries and audio explainers, Canva AI for building interactive learning games in minutes, and InstaLesson for drafting adaptable, standards-aligned lessons that save precious time.We also talk candidly about moving to video, why showing the unpolished version matters, and how small rituals—at school and at home—keep everyone steady when routines fall apart. Parents get practical advice on setting expectations and modeling ethical AI use, while teachers get permission to start small, iterate, and invite students to use tools responsibly rather than banning them. Innovation, we argue, is about people first and tools second; relationships and good judgment turn new tech into better learning.Season four launches January 15 with more conversations, more practical resources, and more human stories from the brighter side of education. In this Hot Topic episode of The Neurodivergent Experience, Jordan James and Simon Scott react to a recent article claiming dogs can be “autistic” — and unpack why this framing misunderstands both animals and neurodivergence. They discuss how natural behaviours in animals get mislabelled as “autistic traits,” why deficit-based language harms autistic people, and how ableist assumptions shape research across species.Together, they explore:How research bias leads to fear-based language like “risk” and “behavioural problems”Why neurodivergence is a natural evolutionary advantage, not a deficitThe danger of reinforcing stereotypes (e.g., “cats are autistic,” “hyper dogs are ADHD”)Why splitting neurodivergence into strict labels misses the bigger pictureHow science goes wrong when it assumes autism is a negative traitThe importance of autistic-led insight in neurodivergent researchThis is a funny, fiery, and thought-provoking take on what happens when good intentions collide with bad science — and why autistic voices must guide any conversation about neurodivergence, no matter the species. Our Sponsors:

Message us here!Ever feel a conversation snap from “let's talk” to “we're yelling” in seconds? When you find yourself butting heads with someone over a "sensitive" topic, it can seem impossible to get on the same page. In this episode, I unpack a research-backed way to dissolve stalemates and actually influence change without steamrolling the person you love. The trick isn't the perfect comeback: it's validation, or "tactical empathy."I talk about the clinical science behind validation that reveals why it's so powerful biologically. Then I talk through practical steps for using validation to go from talking AT each other to talking TO each other. These strategies lowers defensiveness, overwhelm, and hostility. Then, I walk through everyday examples (from talking about drinking and mental health to bedtime battles with a stubborn toddler)and show how to pivot from adversaries to teammates facing the same problem.I also cover what to do when someone shuts down entirely, how to validate the wall itself, and why this approach is especially powerful with sadness and shame. If you've been stuck in circular fights, these tools can open a path to collaboration, progress, and a little peace at home.Support the showIf you're navigating someone's mental health or emotional issues, join KulaMind, our community and support platform. In this episode of The Neurodivergent Experience, Jordan James and Simon Scott share a warm, funny, and deeply relatable account of their weekend in Liverpool — a true neurodivergent experience of travel, routine disruption, sensory differences, social energy, and feeling safe with the right people. From road-trip anxiety and hyperfocus preparation to navigating cities, accents, crowds, and new environments, they reflect on what makes travel hard for autistic and ADHD adults — and what makes it easier when you're with someone who understands your needs without judgment. They explore how their friendship works so well: no masking, no pressure to perform, no expectations to “join in,” just mutual understanding, space to stim or decompress, and the comfort of being fully themselves in each other's homes.Together, Jordan and Simon discuss:Travel anxiety, catastrophising, and the power of preparationHow hyperfocus can override fear and create excitementWhy immersive, paced environments feel more accessible for ND peopleEcholalia, accents, dialects and how ND communication shifts by environmentEating routines, interoception issues, and the pressure of being a “guest”Navigating other people's homes and maintaining boundariesWhy ND people need autonomy, quiet time, and freedom to roamUnmasking safely and what it means to be welcomed “as you are”This lighthearted, genuine episode captures the everyday realities of neurodivergent living — the joy, the challenges, the humour, and the deep relief of finding people who get you. In this chapter, we trace the evolution of the haunting ‘Humans can lick too' Urban Legend. From early cautionary tales about young women alone at night through to its modern form shaped by fears of home invasion, serial killers, and the thin line between security and vulnerability in our own homes. We examine how this legend blurs folklore and reality, how it has absorbed real crimes and media scares, it's surprisingly long history, and why the simple act of a hand reaching down in the dark continues to haunt listeners long after the story is told.Text Me (this is 3rd party & I cannot respond, but I see all messages)Support the showIf you have more information or a correction on something mentioned in this chapter, email us at luke@lukemordue.com For more information on the show, to find all our social accounts and to ensure you are up to date on all we do, visit www.lukemordue.com/podcast
Send us a textA single word—fire—ripped through a quiet winter night and changed Dodge City forever. We travel back to late 1885 as flames burst from the Junction Saloon, raced down Front Street, and turned landmark businesses into a corridor of embers. With no pressurized water system and winter winds pushing the blaze, neighbors hacked at ice for bucket brigades while heat made even brick buildings fail. The Long Branch Saloon, Delmonico's, Zinnerman's hardware, and more fell in hours, and embers leapt the tracks to ignite warehouses and strain the town's last defenses.Amid chaos, Marshal Bill Tilghman and the fire brigade made a stark choice: blast a firebreak with gunpowder to stop the advance. By dawn, roughly 14 businesses were gone and losses neared $150,000—staggering in 1885. Yet the ashes carried a blueprint. The second major fire of that year forced Dodge City to abandon the fragile speed of wood construction and invest in brick, stone, and a modern waterworks. What began as catastrophe became a civic turning point, ending the bucket brigade era and setting the foundation for a safer, more durable city.We unpack how disasters reshape policy and place, why fireproof materials and infrastructure mark the shift from boomtown myth to municipal staying power, and how memory and rebuilding can coexist in the same streets. If you're drawn to Western history, urban resilience, or the untold decisions behind a city's survival, this story offers vivid detail and lasting lessons. 331 – What gives you a sense of self-worth?Over the years, I've met some people who are very, very wealthy. I've also met people who probably didn't have $20 to their name. And lots of people in between. Some of these very wealthy people, even though they have been incredibly successful in many areas of their life, have a very low sense of self-worth. And a few of the homeless people I've met, who don't have enough money to get a good meal, have a remarkable sense of their own value as a human being. Of course, this isn't always the case, but it's kind of the opposite of what you might expect. So I've been thinking about self-worth:What is self-worth?Where does it comes from? How do you find your own-self-worth?Your self-worth is rooted and grounded in your relationship to God as His image and likeness. You may not always see it, but your self-worth is always here because it's part of your identity as a child of God.∞∞∞∞∞∞∞SHOW NOTES: Full transcript and Bible quotes from this episode thebiblespeakstoyou.com/331Text me your questions or comments.Support the showIf you enjoy the podcast, please rate and leave a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify__________________James Early, the Jesus Mindset Coach, is a Bible teacher, speaker, and podcaster. It was not until Tracey was older, with children of her own that she thought to request baby Matthews medical records, and that was when she learned the devastating news that she was listed as the reason for his passing. Many things did not add up for Tracey, but when she watched her own 18 month old daughter struggling to pick up a gallon of milk that they had just brought home from the store, she couldn't help but wonder how, at such a young age she was able to do what she was being accused of. To lift a 4 month old high enough to get him out of a crib, just did not add up. So Tracey decided to look into the circumstances surrounding Matthews death, a little closer. Send us a textA coffin rattles into a mining camp and turns out to be a piano—an unlikely miracle for a saloon that runs on cards, noise, and stubborn pride. We set the scene in a winter-struck gulch where 300 miners live by the hour and try not to think about the lives they left behind. Goskin, the gambler who owns the hall, wants one thing for Christmas: someone brave enough to bring that silent instrument to life. What follows is a story about fear, longing, and the strange ways grace finds a way in. A half-frozen stranger steps out of the storm, warms his hands by the fire, and admits he used to play. When he touches the keys, the room stops moving. Imperfect chords swell into old ballads and familiar carols that carry the men back to apple blossoms, Scottish heather, and candlelit aisles. Even the toughest faces fold when Home Sweet Home lands. The gambling halts, glasses lower, and hardened men drift out to write letters they've owed for years. Then comes the twist that only the frontier could provide. The player asks for a brother named Driscoll, vanishes before dawn, and leaves an empty till and a trail that dies in the snow. The white hair? A wig. The musician? The three-card man who watched the piano like a starving wolf watching a door. Yet the con can't erase the truth of what happened. Music worked where bullets and bravado never could. It made space for memory, tenderness, and the kind of Christmas that holds time together, even in a place built on luck.If this tale moved you, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a review with the song that takes you home.Support the showIf you'd like to buy one or more of our fully illustrated dime novel publications, you can click the link I've included.

Send us a textSnow that bites, winds that snap, and a cabin lit by a single candle—yet the room still fills with carols and the smell of plum pudding. We journey across the Old West to uncover how pioneers forged the Christmas we recognize today, transforming scarcity into ritual and distance into community. From homestead kitchens humming weeks in advance to stockings hung by a hard‑won fire, we explore the customs that stitched a shaken nation back together after the Civil War and blossomed into a national holiday by 1870.We share first‑hand accounts that feel close to the skin: a family pushing through storms to reach a new life in Oregon Territory, neighbors snowshoeing through four feet of powder for a frontier feast, and Dodge City's Christmas Eve council where civic ambition briefly overshadowed goodwill. These vignettes reveal the texture of the season on the prairie—homemade ornaments from evergreens and ribbon, popcorn garlands, cookie‑dough keepsakes, and gifts carved, knitted, and stitched over months. Each detail reminds us that meaning grows where hands work and hearts wait.Midway, we read Robert W. Service's “The Christmas Tree,” a moving tale of a discarded fir that becomes a beacon for a child in pain. The poem echoes the frontier ethic: rescue what the world overlooks, turn it into light, and let hope do the rest. By the close, we reflect on hospitality and charity as the enduring core of the holiday—values that carried pioneers through savage winters and still kindle warmth in ours. Ep 190 w/ Dave Seminara - Inside South Africa, Lesotho & Eswatini: Dave's Ultimate African Adventure GuideIn this week's episode, I sit down once again with writer, journalist, YouTuber and seasoned traveller Dave Seminara, who has just returned from an epic journey across South Africa, Eswatini and Lesotho. This conversation dives deep into one of the most fascinating regions on the planet, and Dave takes us right into the heart of it—through national parks, vibrant townships, mountain kingdoms and some unforgettable encounters along the way.We start in Cape Town, where Dave shares his experience navigating one of the world's most spectacular cities, from its dramatic geography and unpredictable weather to the realities of inequality and the history woven into its suburbs. He takes us for a raw and honest look at the Cape Flats, where he met community leaders working to interrupt gang violence and support local youth. It's eye-opening, powerful and adds an important layer to any understanding of South Africa. From there, Dave describes the magic of going on safari for the first time, including what it's like to stay on a restored luxury train in Kruger National Park, the thrill of spotting wildlife up close, and why safari is both the most rewarding and unpredictable style of travel. He shares practical tips on budget, expectations and what to do when your game drive luck runs cold. We also talk about the difference between national parks and private game reserves, the food (which sounds absolutely unbelievable), and the guides who bring the whole experience to life.Dave then takes us into the Drakensberg Mountains for hikes, ancient Bushmen rock art and one of the most unique lodge stays he's ever experienced. And of course, we cross borders into Eswatini and Lesotho, exploring the logistics, the culture and why both mini-kingdoms are absolutely worth adding to any Southern Africa itinerary. This episode is packed with insights for anyone dreaming of Africa, planning a first visit or simply curious about what travel looks like beyond the iconic highlights. Surveillance cameras captured him entering the bar… and then, somehow, not leaving.Despite being surrounded by cameras, witnesses, and the heartbeat of a busy college nightlife district, Brian Shaffer simply vanished.Tonight, we walk through the full timeline of Brian's final known hours, break down the surveillance footage frame-by-frame, explore the strange architectural quirks of the bar and surrounding construction that may hold clues, and sift through the theories that have kept this case alive for nearly two decades. It remains one of the most haunting unsolved disappearances in modern American history — a true locked-room mystery without the room.In This Episode, We Explore:

Send us a textForget the postcard version of Dodge City. We open the door to the Great Western Hotel and step into a town intent on trading dust for dignity, noise for order, and short-term profits for a longer arc of respectability. The surprise is in the name itself: Great Western wasn't a nod to cattle drives; it was a bid to borrow the prestige of Brunel's railway and steamship, the Victorian shorthand for speed, reliability, and modern life. That branding choice tells us more about ambition on the plains than any staged gunfight ever could. We follow the transformation from the unpolished Western House to a hotel with plate glass, private rooms, and a no-whiskey policy under Dr. Samuel Galland, a German immigrant who believed Dodge City could be sober and civilized. Along the way, we separate trail reality from tourist memory: drovers called it the Western or the Dodge City Trail, while the phrase Great Western Trail arrived decades later through scholarship and heritage markers that retconned the landscape. The evidence runs through ledgers, newspapers, and the lived language of the men who drove the herds. The human stories make the stakes tangible. A silk-top-hatted dentist walks Front Street on principle and learns the cost of standing out before earning respect. Fires scorch the business district, owners come and go, the hotel changes names and survives the Dust Bowl, then vanishes in 1942—only to reappear as a museum gateway that sits near modern trail markers, inviting a tempting but false connection. What remains is the real takeaway: the West wasn't just won by grit; it was branded into being by people who knew that names can move minds as surely as rails move trains. If this reframe challenged a myth you held, share the episode, leave a rating, and tell us which Western “truth” you want us to unpack next. What if God is already at the table you've been avoiding? Acts 10 turns the insider–outsider story on its head as we follow a devout Roman centurion named Cornelius and a sincere, reluctant apostle named Peter. We walk through the rooftop vision that rattles Peter's categories, the front-door threshold that tests his obedience, and the living room moment where the Holy Spirit rushes in before the sermon even lands. No waiting period. No second-class members. Just the unmistakable sign that God is forming one family. We unpack why Cornelius disrupts expectations and why Peter's “No, Lord” is a heartfelt reflex, not rebellion. From there, we trace how God patiently expands a faithfulness that had become too small for the mission ahead. The real pivot happens when Peter says, “Now I realize,” steps into a Gentile home, and watches heaven validate what earth had fenced off. Then the ripple reaches Jerusalem: leaders question, Peter recounts, and surrender wins out over certainty with the line, “Who was I to stand in God's way?”Together we name our modern walls—politics, tradition, wounds, fear—and ask what thresholds love is asking us to cross. You'll hear practical prompts to examine hidden borders, honor real pain, and join what the Spirit is already doing among people we've kept at a distance. If God has entered houses we once avoided, our next faithful move is simple and costly: follow. In this Hot Topic episode of The Neurodivergent Experience, Jordan James and Simon Scott respond to shocking recent comments from Reform UK's deputy leader, Richard Tice — whose claims about “overdiagnosis,” ear defenders, and SEND support reveal just how dangerously out of touch his party is with neurodivergent realities. They break down Tice's statements about “too many labels,” “overdiagnosed children,” and the idea that SEND support should be pushed back onto already-burnt-out schools. Jordan and Simon explore why this rhetoric isn't just ignorant — it's harmful, ableist, and deeply rooted in a political movement that treats disabled children as a financial burden rather than human beings.Across the episode, they dive into:Why claims of “overdiagnosis” are factually wrong — and why autism and ADHD remain massively underdiagnosedThe danger of framing neurodivergent support as “optional” or “too expensive”How right-wing parties in the UK and US mirror each other in attacking disabled communitiesWhy ear defenders, sensory tools, and accommodations matter — and what it means when politicians publicly mock themThe long history of autistic people driving innovation, science, technology, art, and cultureHow austerity politics weaponise public ignorance about neurodivergenceWhy dismissing assessments, EHCPs, and support plans harms every child, not just SEND studentsWhat happens when politicians shape policy around stigma instead of science and lived experienceThis is a fiery, unapologetic episode about the real political threat facing autistic and ADHD people — and why our community cannot stay silent when elected officials target disabled children to score votes. Our Sponsors:
Following on from our Thanksgiving extravaganza about Pasatiempo and the work of MacKenzie and Hollins, Sam sits down with Jim Urbina and Brett Hochstein. A link to our film can be found here. Jim has been working on the restoration of Pasatiempo for 25 years now, and knows the course about as well as Marion and the good Doctor would have. His love and care over the last quarter of a century has helped bring the course back to its former glory, and following their most recent work in the past two winters, the green sites are absolutely sparkling.Brett is a restorative shaper and someone we've become good friends with over the last few years. Brett talks about the process of bringing those shapes and contours within the green sites back to life thanks to the wonderful library of Beck photos which exist, and which have helped inform every grain of earth that was moved in the process. In this episode of The Neurodivergent Experience, Jordan James and Simon Scott look back at five years since the COVID-19 lockdown — and how that period reshaped society, mental health, and the lives of autistic and ADHD adults. With honesty, humour, and emotional depth, they revisit the fear, isolation, shifting rules and political failures of 2020, and how lockdown exposed their neurodivergence in unexpected ways. They share how regression, unmasking, burnout, identity loss and relationship strain collided with a world in crisis — and how many neurotypical people began showing traits often associated with autism and ADHD.They explore how lockdown changed behaviour, communication, social skills, empathy and online culture — and how those long-term effects are still shaping autistic and ADHD lives today.Together, Jordan and Simon discuss:How lockdown triggered autistic burnout, regression, and forced unmaskingWhy do so many neurotypical people develop “autistic-coded” traits during isolationThe collapse of social norms, empathy, boundaries, and patience post-lockdownThe rise of selfishness, social withdrawal, and digital dependencyThe emotional impact on teens of losing key developmental yearsHow family dynamics shifted for better and worseWhy remote work has transformed accessibility for neurodivergent peopleThis is a reflective, raw, and deeply human conversation about the way lockdown reshaped us — individually and collectively — and why neurodivergent people felt those shifts more intensely than anyone. Our Sponsors:
In this chapter, we trace the story of the so called 'Frozen Hill People' from 19th century Vermont newspaper accounts and family scrapbooks to modern retellings in magazines, folklore collections, and online media, asking where it sits between rural desperation, hoax, and horror. We separate what can be verified from what was likely invented, and explore why the idea of humans placed into a kind of living hibernation still fascinates us in an age of cryonics and medical hypothermia. To many, the Frozen Hill People are another Urban Legend, but for those who return to the story each winter, they are a reminder of how far people imagine they might go when the cold closes in.Text Me (this is 3rd party & I cannot respond, but I see all messages)Support the showIf you have more information or a correction on something mentioned in this chapter, email us at luke@lukemordue.com For more information on the show, to find all our social accounts and to ensure you are up to date on all we do, visit www.lukemordue.com/podcast
Message us here! Are you avoiding talking to your kids about topics that are just...awkward? In this episode, I chat with Dr. Elsa Friis, clinical psychologist and VP of Product at Alongside, to unpack a practical way to tackle taboo topics (sex, porn, consent, screens) without burning the bridge you're trying to build. Dr. Friis takes us from a group home with twelve boys to community-led parenting programs in Kenya, showing how cultural humility changes results. Warmth, respect, and safety are universal, but a mismatch in how love is shown fuels conflict. We dig into concrete tools: visual schedules that calm bedtime battles, shared calendars that grow autonomy, and “ice cream chats” that make awkward feel doable. We outline scripts for starting the sex conversation early, framing online exposure without shame, and setting boundaries that still invite honesty. We also explore how technology can extend, not replace, human care. 329 – Are you grateful when things don't go the way you want them to?A lot of folks I've been talking to lately are facing some pretty serious challenges. And they don't really think they have anything to be grateful for. They're worried about the rising cost of living, if they can pay their bills and put food on the table for their families. They're worried about the rising costs of health care. Some folks have lost their jobs and haven't been able to find work. Other people are feeling a lot of stress in the political arena, the constant barrage of conflicting opinions on social media, and the threat of violence getting out of hand. And then like a ray of light piercing the dark clouds, someone facing these or other challenges will pause and express gratitude for all the blessings they do have. When life gets hard, it's actually an opportunity, it's a call, to embrace the spirit of gratitude. Every day is an opportunity to know and love God more, to love your neighbor and yourself more as children of God, and to be blessing to others. And that is a lot to be grateful for.∞∞∞∞∞∞∞Show notes: For a full transcript and all Bible quotes, go to thebiblespeakstoyou.com/329 Text me your questions or comments.Support the showIf you enjoy the podcast, please rate and leave a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify__________________James Early, the Jesus Mindset Coach, is a Bible teacher, speaker, and podcaster. Send us a textVet days don't have to feel like a battle. We break down a calmer, smarter way to get great care for your dog by preparing the right evidence, shaping the environment, and training simple skills that pay off when it matters. From short videos of movement and wound healing to clear photos of stool or vomit, we show how to brief your vet with exactly what they need to see so a ten-minute consult becomes targeted, not rushed. You'll hear how waiting in the car, asking for outdoor consults, and timing drop-offs can transform stress levels for everyone. We also tackle the moments where speed saves lives. Pyometra can look like “just a tummy bug” until it's not; we explain the signs, the urgency, and how to advocate for scans when your gut says something's wrong. Alongside that, we talk through positive muzzle training as a crucial life skill, not a stigma. Done well, a muzzle becomes a cue for rewards and calm handling, useful for pain exams, travel rules, or breed legislation, and a safety net that protects vets, techs, and your dog.To round it out, we share practical first aid steps and why a simple kit plus a printed quick-reference guide can steady your decisions when adrenaline spikes.
