Biopics …
Mark-Anthony Turnage is a composer of contemporary classical music. Once called “Britain's hippest composer”, he has been in a rock band, got drunk with Francis Bacon, and tackled anything from drug abuse to football in his works. Mark was born in June 1960 in the Thames estuary town of Corringham in Essex. His musical talent was nurtured by his parents and he studied composition at the junior department at the Royal College of Music from aged fourteen. There he met the composer Oliver Knussen who became his tutor, mentor, and life-long friend. His first performed work, Night Dances, written while still at the Royal College, won a prize and heralded Mark's evolution into what one critic calls “one of the best known British composers of his generation, widely admired for his highly personal mixture of energy and elegy, tough and tender”. Greek, his debut opera, a reimagining of the Oedipus myth whose protagonist is a racist, violent and foul-mouthed football hooligan, shocked the establishment, which flinched, but accepted “Turnage, the trouble-maker” as a forceful voice. Over the past four decades he has sustained a distinguished and productive career that has seen him working closely with conductors of the stature of Bernard Haitink, Esa-Pekka Salonen and, particularly, Simon Rattle. He has been attached to prestigious institutions, such as English National Opera and both the BBC and Chicago symphony orchestras, and has written a vast range of music for many different instruments and ensembles. His influences include soul, gospel, all sorts of jazz and the great symphonic works of the repertoire. He has written operas, ballets, concertos, chamber pieces and choral works together with orchestrating a football match. His key works include Three Screaming Popes and Blood on the Floor (both inspired by Francis Bacon paintings, and the latter containing an elegy for his younger brother, Andrew, who died of a drug overdose in 1995), as well as more operas including one about the former Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith. Mark lives in North London with his partner, the opera director, Rachael Hewer. DISC ONE: Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125 II. Molto vivace - Presto - Molto vivace – Presto.
Niclo Vitelli"Giacomo Puccini. Niclo Vitelli.Nato a Viareggio nel 1954, vive a Massarosa. Humanities West and the Italian Cultural Institute celebrate the life and art of Giacomo Puccini (December 22, 1858 to November 29, 1924) on the 100th anniversary of his death. His operas La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Turandot are among the most beloved and most often-recorded operas of all time. His arias are famous for both their emotional resonance and their melodic beauty—even among millions who have never listened to a complete opera. Puccini was born into a centuries-old family of Italian composers, and he began his successful career just as Verdi was completing his, quickly inheriting Verdi's renown as the greatest living composer of Italian opera. We have brought the internationally praised scholar and musicologist Gabriele Dotto from Italy to share the stage with San Francisco Opera's favorite Kip Cranna to tell some of the stories behind the composition of Puccini's heavenly arias. Giacomo Puccini and the Impact of Early 20th Century Media Gabriele Dotto will trace the rapid rise of sound recordings and film as competitors for opera theaters and the traditional business of music publishers. Puccini and his publisher, Casa Ricordi, demonstrated an extraordinary combination of artistic creation and commercial activity, using new and efficient strategies to market Casa Ricordi's opera repertoire to a globally expanding audience and “branding” Puccini as the publishing house's most iconic composer. Puccini Before Fame: The Composer in His Youth Clifford (Kip) Cranna will discuss Puccini's boyhood experiences, his musical training and his operatic influences. Cranna will demonstrate that some of the music Puccini wrote as a student was eventually recycled in his later operas. He will also concentrate on Puccini's first two operas, the rarely performed Le Villi and Edgar, which were composed before his first big hit Manon Lescaut—the beginning of his enduring fame and operatic stardom. “Seems an opera house is the perfect place for mischief and mayhem,” says the hard-boiled Inspector Cristina as she seeks to unravel the mystery at the heart of Overture to Murder, the meticulously researched third book of Erica Miner's “Julia Kogan Opera Mystery Series.” Mayhem and mischief are no strangers to the opera house, both on and off-stage. Join us for a discussion of both Erica's new book and Giacomo Puccini's Il Tabarro, a powerful, gritty verismo opera inspired by the dramatic potential of the darker human impulses.

Because we American expats in Germany often celebrate Thanksgiving on the weekend after our compatriots in the US, I offer you today a second Thanksgiving episode, this one featuring the extraordinary Ina Souez (1903 – 1992), one of the few Native American singers to achieve worldwide fame on the operatic stage. (For those of you who are unaware, November is Native American Heritage Month). Though her career was truncated by world events, Souez's place in the history of recorded sound is assured by virtue of her participation in the series of Mozart operas as produced by HMV in the mid-1930s as souvenirs of the first seasons of the Glyndebourne Festival. Indeed, one could argue that her Fiordiligi remains the standard by which all other interpreters are judged. This episode also includes recordings from both ends of Souez's career, as it were, including an extraordinarily rare yet impressive and touching 1957 recording of Souez singing arias and songs long after her active career had ended. The episode also features Souez in near-definitive recordings from both Ernani and La Bohème, the latter particularly appropriate as we just recently observed the 100th anniversary of the death of Giacomo Puccini. Finally, this episode also serves as a memorial to Souez, who died 32 years ago this coming week. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. ✨ 25 palabras clave: Turandot, Giacomo Puccini, Nessun Dorma, disonancia cognitiva, orgullo, relaciones, pruebas, ansiedad, autoconocimiento, vulnerabilidad, confianza, control, amor, sacrificio, ópera, Calaf, Liù, enigmas, crecimiento personal, autoaceptación, Groucho Marx, Cervantes, Rostand, Salinger, Pasternak. Solomea: Star of Opera's Golden Age by Andriy J Semotiuk https://amzn.to/3ya7Y3A Myworkvisa.com What does it take to reach the very top of your profession or calling? How does one rise from humble beginnings to achieve greatness and to perform with other first-class artists on the world stage? How do you break through barriers blocking you from reaching success because you are not the "right kind" of person? How do you break through the glass ceiling as a woman? As a parent or grandparent, where can one find a great model for children or even grandchildren to emulate? These are just some of the questions answered in this book. Solomea Krushelnytska was hailed as the world's leading dramatic soprano during the Golden Age of opera at the turn of the 20th century. Born in 1872 into a family with eight children in a small village in Western Ukraine, she studied opera and battled her way to superstardom while performing with opera legends like composer Giacomo Puccini, director Arturo Toscanini, and tenor Enrico Caruso. Working with Arturo Toscanini, she played the lead roles of Salome and Elktra in the premiers of these operas in Italy. Among other major successes, Krushelnytska helped Giacomo Puccini rescue the opera Madama Butterfly from its failed debut at La Scala in Milan in 1904 by playing the lead role of Cio-Cio-San in the opera's re-creation in the Teatro Grande in Brescia, Italy later that year. Thanks to their joint efforts, Madama Butterfly remains one of the most popular operas to this day. She also played other leading roles in major opera houses in Europe, South America, North America, and Northern Africa. Throughout her career, she shared the fruits of her success with her family. Towards the end of her career, she moved back to Western Ukraine on the eve of World War II. Her beautiful voice was then drowned out by the gunfire of Soviet and Nazi armies and she was reduced to struggling for survival. Yet reverence for her talent likely helped her escape most of the ultraviolence that rampaged through her city at that time. Throughout the world war, she sheltered the author's mother, aunt, and grandparents in her apartment. She spent her final years in Lviv, teaching at the same place where her rise to fame and fortune had begun. Told from the perspective of her grand nephew Andriy Semotiuk, with intimate details related to his family's immigrant experience never before shared, her rags-to-riches life story is an amazing odyssey, a triumph of the human spirit, an incredible testament to her dedication to art, and an inspiration to people everywhere.
