In this week's episode, we'll be talking about the nine hikers that died during a hiking/ski expedition in the Ural Mountains of Russia, the area now known as Dyatlov Pass.  The hikers set up camp on the slopes of Kholat Syakhi, which is a Mansi name translating to "Dead Mountain."  Something caused them to leave their tent in a panic and scatter about in subzero temperatures.  They left most of their supplies in the tent and were not dressed properly to survive the bitter cold.Six died from what was determined to be hypothermia, while the other three died from violent injuries.   The Russian officials claimed it was weather related, while others believed it was a military cover up or a Menk (Yeti) that attacked and killed them.  Listen to the official autopsy reports and come to your own conclusion.  We believe it was a Yeti.If you have any comments, questions or stories you would like to share, or if you'd like to be on the show, email us at cryptidfanatic@gmail.com.Send us a textSupport the show

LEXINGTON, Ky. (October 30, 2025) – Kentucky continues to face one of the highest rates of lung cancer in the nation, but new advances at UK HealthCare are helping doctors shorten the time from diagnosis to life-saving treatment. Through the use of cutting-edge robotic systems, UK surgeons can now perform same-day biopsy and surgery for certain early-stage lung cancers — turning what was once weeks of waiting and anxiety into a single, coordinated procedure. Dr. Shari Meyerson, professor of surgery and division chief of thoracic surgery, and Dr. Mansi Shah, assistant professor in the Division of Thoracic Surgery, are leading this effort at the University of Kentucky. Their team is also the first in Kentucky — and among the first in the region — to perform thoracic procedures using the new single-port da Vinci robotic system, which allows complex operations through one small incision, helping patients recover faster and with less pain.  On this episode of 'Behind the Blue,' Drs. Meyerson and Shah explain how robotic technology is transforming lung-cancer care in Kentucky. They discuss the impact of same-day diagnosis and treatment, the benefits of single-port surgery for quicker recovery and reduced narcotic use, and the importance of encouraging more Kentuckians to take part in routine lung-cancer screening.  "Behind the Blue" is available via a variety of podcast providers, including iTunes and Spotify. I am at that age when I see more deaths than births.   And, for some esoteric reason, such news arrives either as an early morning call - these are shriller, as if recognizing the weight of the tragedy -  or as a message deep in the night - when the night lights up with the neon glow of a phone which refuses to predict the darkness it predates.   And I skip a heartbeat. And the news seeps in. And then it takes a while to reconcile with a world with one loved one less.   Mansi's grandmother lost her husband six years back, and broke her back in a fall thereafter. Then an intractable disease made her lose her vocal chords. Then she lost her son a couple of years back to cancer. That really broke her. She became completely reliant on others. Deep inside she could not decide what was worse - losing her life partner, her son or face a future completely at the behest of others. She pondered killing herself. But she couldn't reach a fan and was just too weak to slide a razor across her arteries.   I met her about once a month. She was small in her bed, but her eyes shone ferociously, even as she gently caressed my cheek.   And when she died a few days back, she left behind a primer on things the bereaved needed to do, and not do, after her death.   She'd written -   "No one will give me a bath or change my clothes after I die. No one will touch the feet of my dead body. That's not me. I have gone. The mourning will not last beyond the time I'm consumed by the flames. Life has to go on and become normal immediately. Everything I own will be donated to the Marwari Widows Society, including my zari sarees and my mangalsutra (please note). Don't make my room a shrine. Remove all traces of me. I would hate to have my photograph put up with a sad garland. Give my room to Sandesh. He needs a bigger one, what with him getting married and all. Remove that rickety cupboard. And that infernal painting by Asha that I've suffered for so many years. Don't put my dead body in an electric crematorium. Burn it on a wooden pyre. Do wait for my ashes. And my last request. In time, take the ashes to the mangroves of Sunderbans. Not the sea, but the rivulets. And scatter them amongst the magnificent roots. I like the idea of vexing the roots a bit before floating into the infinity of the sea.  If possible, can you do this in the monsoon? Then you will remember me as rain, someone who nourished you, teased you, but cherished life, and knew when to fade gracefully, leaving no traces behind, apart from freshly-hewn leaves."   And I know as I know myself, that we might lose the final shred of our faculties, but we will hold onto the last vestiges of our dignity.   Beyond the fug of appearances and compulsions, lies the burning presence of identity - often merely the idea of it - which we hold on to as a hungry dog holds onto a sliver of meat against hungry predators.   And we are all better people when we learn to embrace this reality of everyone we love, and those who love us.   If you liked this poem, consider listening to these other poems on death and other passing ons -  Sometimes Life Leaves You Alone Assisted Suicide I Heard That You Just Set Off On a Journey Subscribe to my newsletter 'The Uncuts' Follow me on Instagram at @sunilgivesup Get in touch with me on uncutpoetrynow@gmail.com   The details of the music used in this episode are as follows - Lonely bird instrumental by Sascha Ende Link: https://filmmusic.io/en/song/Lonely bird instrumental Licence:  https://filmmusic.io/standard-license

Psychoanalysis On and Off the Couch
Before 'Ghosts' become 'Ancestors' with Shalini Masih, PhD (Worcestershire, UK)

“All of this together shaped how I began to think about mind, not as something to be mastered, but as a landscape of the unspoken whether it was ghosts or griefs or desires that were hard to relinquish. I saw that the ghost was not always an ‘other'. It was often intimate, tied to lost ones, sometimes to unmet desires, to unbearable longings, but in some ways possession was an attempt to keep close what was slipping away. The ghost doesn't just haunt, it feels as if it wants something, and we just have to learn to develop ears to listen to what it wants.”  Episode Description: We acknowledge Loewald's concept of 'ghosts becoming ancestors' and consider the similarities and differences with those who hold 'ghosts' to be literal. Shalini shares with us her journey to open herself to the uncertainty and ambiguity of these externalized entities while appreciating both their cultural and intrapsychic sources. We learn of her family's involvement with exorcisms, especially her grandmother's "fearless warmth" and "empathy that saw beyond the terror of the ghosts." She considers the many facets of mind that are represented by 'ghosts' and the essential value of approaching them as guides to the "landscape of the unspoken." Shalini describes a long term engagement that she had with an individual who "taught me to receive the inchoate and horrific...to contain the brokenness and not interpret it away.. and to appreciate the glimpses of beauty in the most grotesque parts of self."   Our Guest: Shalini Masih, a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and writer, grew up in India amidst priests and healers, witnessing spirit possession and exorcism. Now based in Worcestershire, UK, she holds a Master's degree in Psychoanalytic Studies from Tavistock & Portman, London, and a PhD from the University of Delhi. Mentored by psychoanalysts Michael Eigen and Sudhir Kakar, she's an award-winning scholar of the American Psychological Association. She has taught and supervised psychoanalytic psychotherapists in Ambedkar University, Delhi and in Birkbeck, University of London. Her acclaimed paper, 'Devil!
