In this week's Stories From The Road, Tim reads one of the most impactful pieces he's ever worked on as an editor. Writer Iuliana Marchian, a native Romanian, wrote a piece about the impact of the 1989 revolution against Communist rule in Romania. The piece covers the development of personal freedoms and how they've impacted trust in government, as well as how citizens have experienced progress in human rights and quality of life. Marchian describes a polarized society that is moving forward but still has many steps to take to fulfill all of revolution's goals. As a traveler, the piece offers many takeaways of how these impacts play out in daily Romanian life and how you can experience the country's true culture on a trip there.Relevant links: 30 years after the revolution, Romania is still rebuilding Iuliana's LinkedIn Tim's Instagram Eben's Instagram

When you've been an international in Denmark for a while, as I have, you sometimes forget what it was like to arrive here for the first time and know nothing. I remember arriving just about this time of year and being astonished by all the public holidays in spring. I'd arrived to work, but the office kept shutting down. Now one of my various gigs is cultural training for newcomers, paid for by the big corporations that bring them here. The questions they ask bring me back to the time when I first arrived. One of the most popular questions is pretty basic: How do I send a letter in Denmark? What does a postbox look like? Where do I buy a stamp? I also get a lot of questions about Danish bicycle culture, which the Danish government promotes so heavily in its tourist campaigns. A nice man newly-arrived from Russia asked me: Will it be possible for me to get a bicycle in Denmark? I said yes, it would. But hey, there are no dumb questions. (Would it be possible for me, Kay, to get a bicycle in Moscow? I have no idea.) Bicycle culture is often exaggerated in Denmark – the truth is, the number of kilometers cycled each year keeps falling, and the number of cars keeps increasing, even thought it is very expensive. You can still get by with only a bike in Copenhagen and Aarhus, but in the less urban parts of Denmark, life will be uncomfortable without a car.
Recently the beautiful cathedral of Notre Dame celebrated an anniversary no one would have wished for or expected a number of years back. On 15 April 2023 it was 4 years from the devastating fire that tore through the roof of Notre Dame and started years of renewal and restoration. In this podcast chat with Paris resident and historian Claudine Hemingway, she spoke with me about the processes of the restoration as well as ways to still connect with Notre Dame until the repair is intended to be finished next year in December 2024. Pre-fire my husband Paul and I climbed to the top of Notre Dame and took in the view of Paris surrounding the spire at the top of the cathedral. When we descended we went into the church and mass was just starting. We stayed for mass blending into the familiar ritual of sitting, standing and kneeling at the same times as we have in every other mass around the world. The prayers have the same pattern and lilt even though in another language. I felt so connected to my surroundings in Notre Dame during that visit, which I'm sure hundreds of thousands of other Catholics have over time as well. It is a church not just for Paris, but a church of the world in some ways. I'm so glad I did that climb now and stayed for mass. Seeing the fire take hold there solidified for me the view that we should never take anything for granted. We never know what tomorrow may hold...**Louise Prichard is the host of the Loulabelle's FrancoFiles podcast.**Other Loulabelle's links:FrancoFile Fix on YouTubeLoulabelle's FrancoFiles Spotify Playlist Loulabelle's FrancoFiles InstagramLoulabelle's FrancoFiles website

Hospitality can be a nebulous thing, and while you know it when you feel it, what are some of its concrete elements and how do you create it and maintain it in a restaurant? To explore that question, I turned to two of the most hospitable people I know, Jerry and Krista Slater. Based in Athens, GA, they currently own two restaurants: The Expat and Slater's Steakhouse, one wine shop and bar named The Lark, and are in process to open another restaurant and a cocktail bar very soon. So they think about hospitality a lot. They've made a career of it, with Jerry working at Charlie Trotter's in Chicago, Seelbach Hotel in Louisville, and being one of the consulting creators for One Flew South in Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta. Krista, a painter and certified sommelier, worked for years in the wine and restaurant industry in the Bay Area before relocating to Georgia. You might even recognize their names from a beverage column in the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, so to say busy is an understatement. But despite that, they are always intentional in creating their spaces and guest experiences, and they do it all with a dash of humor and goodwill for the larger community.

Susan Hodgson is an Irish expat coach helping women navigate new territory with their drinking amidst the challenges of living abroad and trying to find that elusive feeling of “home”. She lives near Paris with her French husband and three kids who enjoy correcting her grammar and complaining about holidays back to the Donegal rain. Susan shares her story of becoming alcohol-free, and Wendy and Susan discuss the common misconceptions of expat life, why it can make drinking less more challenging for women, the difference between what you do and who you are, mommy wine culture abroad, learning to feel emotions instead of numbing them, the concept of “home” and how to find it anywhere and discovering yourself in midlife. This is a lovely conversation with an even lovelier human. Enjoy! More about Susan: www.sharpsensecoaching.com @sharp.sense.coaching on Instagram

Sailing all the way around Antarctica is no easy task. Just ask today's guest, “extreme sailor” Lisa Blair. She holds the record for the fastest circumnavigation of the continent, a title she almost perished in order to gain. Lisa joins the show to discuss her dangerous adventures in the Southern Ocean , her new book, “Facing Fear: The First Woman To Sail Solo Around Antarctica,” and what it takes to embark on such an incredible journey. She breaks down what was going through her mind as her ship nearly capsized in a raging torrent, and how she managed to rig her mast and make it to shore just in time.Eben and Lisa met while on a cruise to Antarctica last December, and while this cruise was among the most extreme adventures Eben will ever be a part of, for Lisa, it was a walk in the park. The impacts of visiting fragile ecosystems is also on the docket today. Lisa dubbed her sailboat “Climate Action Now” to raise awareness of small efforts by everyday people to combat climate change -- a fitting PR move, since Antarctica is among the world's most vulnerable spots to warming temps. In Hot Takes, Tim and Eben discuss extreme destinations they've always wanted to visit but never got the chance, and Eben breaks down the mood of the travelers on the ship as Antarctica first came into view.Relevant links: Lisa Blair Sails The World Facing Fear: The First Woman To Sail Solo Around Antarctica Lisa's Instagram Eben's Instagram Tim's Instagram

In this episode, I am going to discuss the legal processes and issues my wife and I have been experiencing in becoming an ex-pat in Mexico. This includes getting a resident visa, the various identification numbers you need to acquire, getting an apostille for your marriage certificate, having new wills created, acquiring a Mexican driver's license, and a few other tidbits of information. This will not be legal advice as I am not a lawyer but it will give you some things to think about. This will be specifically about Mexico but you will run into the same issues no matter where you choose to go. For those new to this podcast, my wife and I moved to Ajijic Mexico in 2018. My wife retired and I moved my business south of the border. At that point, I periodically started blogging and podcasting about our experiences. Much to my surprise those episodes have been very popular. We have crossed a number of legal thresholds like both of us are now permanent residents, and we both have Mexican driver's licenses. We bought a house in Ajijic in October of 2021 and bought a new car in Mexico in January of 2023. Buying a new car was painful as there is very limited availability of new cars at the dealers. The process was simple once the cars had been delivered but the wait was painful. We chose to live in a very walkable place in Mexico and therefore, the 3 months we went without a car was okay. We did realize that we did not need the car very much but there were times when it was handy to have. Instead, we hired a professional driver to take us places. For example, my wife needed to have her hearing aids serviced and we hired a driver to take her into Guadalajara twice, once to talk with the audiologist and drop the hearing aids off, and another time to pick them up. Today on Dear Nina I have a guest with a harrowing and inspiring story to share about starting a new life with new friends after a horrific tragedy. This is unlike any story I've heard firsthand, and I'm grateful for Jen's candor and honesty.Jen Zwinck wrote to me:After my husband was killed, I moved with my daughter to a small island in the Caribbean where I didn't know a single person. I went there to heal. What surprised me was the friendships that I formed while I was there, these women who came into my life, divinely, I believe, became my angels and my 'stand-in' family. We shared the bond of being expats and I'm still close with them to this day.Jen Zwinck is a co-founder of the Widow Squad online community, a widow advocate, and an author. She has interviewed over 100 widows and coached hundreds of widows through her courses and online programs. She lives outside of New Orleans.Find Jen on Instagram @widow_180Let's connect over all things friendship! It's called Drake's Right of Passage for a reason. Eben learned this the hard way back in December, when he embarked on the maiden voyage of the Sylvia Earle, a new ship from Australian cruise line Aurora Expeditions. En route he battled 20-foot waves, rowdy passengers, and the seclusion that only accompanies being stuck on a boat at the bottom of the planet -- all while doing his darndest to ward off seasickness. On today's podcast, Eben recounts the journey through the story he wrote for Matador Network. It's a tale of true adventure -- so buckle up and don't let your stomach turn. A proposed law in Italy would ban the use English (or other foreign) words by public officials and in all government communications and documents, with fines of up to 100,000 euros for offenders. But what happens when a word in English simply doesn't exist in Italian? Or is it so archaic that it is rarely used anymore? And how much time will be wasted going through hundreds of thousands of documents to make these changes? Not to mention, is the Italian language really under attack? Does "Anglomania" truly pose a threat to the preservation of the Italian language? We discuss on this week's episode. We also talk about other places that have strict language laws (like those that Tiffany experienced living in Montreal years ago), and if they are necessary, at least in some circumstances, or if they pose a threat to freedom of speech. To end, Tiffany quizzes Katy on the meaning of English words that have completely lost their original meaning when used in Italian. See if Katy can guess what Italians think those English words mean. This is a fun one. ------------------------------------- ADVERTISE WITH US: Reach expats, future expats, and travelers all over the world. Send us an email to get the conversation started.
