In this engaging Christmas episode of the Anglotopia podcast, host Jonathan Thomas and guest and Anglotopia columnist Amanda Graves explore the fascinating differences between British and American Christmas traditions. Amanda shares her experiences of celebrating Christmas in both cultures, discussing everything from the timing of decorations and Christmas dinner to the significance of Boxing Day and the King's speech. The conversation highlights the unique aspects of each tradition, the challenges of blending cultures, and the joy of preserving cherished customs while adapting to new ones. Links Spilling the Tea Column on Anglotopia British Christmas Articles Friends of Anglotopia Takeaways Amanda shares her first culture shock during her first American Christmas. The tradition of opening presents on Christmas Day is a significant difference between the UK and the US. Christmas dinner in the UK typically includes turkey, stuffing, and Christmas pudding, while Americans often opt for ham or beef. Amanda has adapted to American traditions while still trying to maintain some British customs. Christmas crackers are a fun British tradition that Amanda tries to introduce to her American friends. The misconception of fruitcake in America differs greatly from the British version, which is often enjoyed. Boxing Day is a day of recuperation and charity in the UK, but is largely unknown in America. The King's Christmas speech is an important tradition for Amanda, providing a moment of reflection during the holiday. Christmas television specials are a cherished part of British culture that Amanda misses. Amanda enjoys the festive spirit of Texas, where Christmas decorations are often extravagant. Sounds Bites Here are 10 compelling sound bites from the episode with timestamps: 1. The Decoration Culture Shock (02:22-02:51) "Suddenly everybody had tons of decorations up. Everybody had wreaths on their door. Everybody was putting lights into their bushes outside their door. And I'm thinking, I didn't know that we were supposed to do that." 2. Tree Timeline Shock (02:51-03:18) "A lot of people put their Christmas trees up super early, right after Thanksgiving. That was a bit baffling to me because at home we really didn't put up our Christmas tree until the week of Christmas." 3. The Cactus Christmas (04:12-05:02) "When I first met my husband, he had a large cactus and he would put some really funny ornaments on the cactus. He has some funny ornaments like the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, which hangs from that. We still have a small Christmas tree that we put the tacky ornaments on as a nod to his previous indifference of Christmas." 4. The Breakfast in Bed Disaster (06:48-07:37) "We decided to make my mother breakfast in bed. We had no way of knowing that very late the night before she'd gone to midnight mass and had trod dog poo all the way up the stairs and had to spend two hours scrubbing the stairs, had fallen into bed at about three o'clock in the morning and we woke her at six o'clock with breakfast in bed." 5. Bilingual Christmas Greetings (01:32-01:38) "Well, I am bilingual now. So when I'm here, I say Merry Christmas. And when I'm in England, I say Happy Christmas." 6. Christmas in July Surprise (41:45-42:29) "I enlisted my niece to help me surprise everybody with Christmas in July. I had ordered a turkey from the butcher and it was so big it literally wouldn't fit in the fridge. So I had to find a cooler, pack it full of ice and put the turkey in the cooler and hide it." 7. The Queen's Speech Tradition (06:48-07:37) "At three o'clock, it was the Queen's speech, it's now the King's speech, and that is an absolute must-see. Everybody pretty much gathers around the TV. We would spend hours before Christmas poring over the radio times and the TV times to see what was on on Christmas Day." 8. Not Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer (43:11-43:22) "I like to tune into the Christmas carols and just remind myself that there are beautiful carols out there and beautifully sung and it's not Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer." 9. American Vacation Reality (42:01-42:29) "In the UK, pretty much everybody has that whole week off. It's just expected. That's another thing. It's more difficult to do that, to get away, unless the children are really small." 10. The Great Christmas Closing Line (46:46-46:52) "Whether you're celebrating with Christmas crackers or inflatable lawn Santas, mince pies, or fruit cake, we wish you a very happy Christmas. Or is it Merry Christmas? After this conversation, we'll leave that choice up to you." “I never thought I was going to have kids here… that wouldn't have even crossed my mind.” — Claire SimpsonThis episode with Claire really opened my eyes to a side of Vietnam I've never personally experienced but have always been curious about — what it's actually like to be an expat parent here. I've interviewed entrepreneurs, creatives, teachers, founders… but motherhood is a whole different universe. There were parts of this episode that surprised me, like how many expats assume you can't buy diapers or formula here, or the fact that kindergarten can start as early as 6–9 months. And then the nanny story… wow. It's one of the wildest behind-the-scenes expat-life stories I've ever heard on the podcast. But the biggest takeaway for me is this: Vietnam can absolutely be an amazing place to raise a child — as long as you're prepared, informed, and connected.Key Talking PointsWhat maternity care in Vietnam is really like for expats — including costs, translation challenges, medical tests, and choosing the right hospital. How motherhood impacts identity abroad — from postpartum depression to losing parts of yourself to rebuilding routines and confidence.Practical realities of raising a kid in Vietnam — baby supplies, pollution, infrastructure, kindergartens, and accessing play areas. How Vietnamese culture treats children — the warmth, attention, and openness families receive everywhere they go.The truth about hiring a nanny in Vietnam — a raw story about contracts, misunderstandings, emotional conflict, and what expat parents need to know.Episode Chapters & Timestamps02:50 — Awards, Identity & Pregnancy Claire talks about influencer awards, losing parts of her identity, and finding out she was pregnant.06:30 — Navigating Healthcare & Maternity Packages We dive into hospitals, costs, tests, translators, and what the maternity journey looks like in Vietnam.12:50 — Motherhood Without Family Support The emotional and practical challenges of being an expat mum, postpartum depression, and building a “tribe.”17:45 — Raising Kids in Vietnam: Food, Formula, Kindergartens & Safety Diapers, play areas, pollution, sidewalks, cultural attitudes toward children — the full picture.28:30 — The Nanny Story: Contracts, Conflict & Lessons Learned Claire shares the dramatic and eye-opening experience of hiring a nanny and the advice she wishes she had known."Send me a message!"Support the show
What happens if you unexpectedly inherit money from a loved one while living abroad, especially when there's no formal estate plan in place? As an American expat, both international and US tax laws can take a significant portion of your inheritance. Losing someone is hard enough, and navigating cross-border inheritance shouldn't make it harder. Expats should review their estate plans and those of their loved ones before moving internationally and consider how their new country of residence will interact with global regulations because US citizens and green card holders are taxed on their worldwide income and estate, even when living abroad. In this episode of We're The Brits In America, Richard Taylor – dual UK/US citizen and Chartered Financial Planner – speaks to Paula Jones – founder of Jones Estate Group, Inc – to talk about the pitfalls of estate planning as an American abroad. Richard and Paula discuss: · The intricacies of working globally and the decision-making process involved in potentially claiming residency in another country, like France or Portugal. · Principles around setting up estate plans both domestically and internationally, focusing on avoiding pitfalls such as adverse tax consequences. · The severity of exit taxes for expatriates and green card holders. · How international estate planning can intersect with tax obligations in both the US and prospective European countries. · The importance of cross-border estate planning and tax professionals to avoid costly DIY mistakes. More about We're The Brits In America: With the right financial advice, landmines that threaten expat wealth can be avoided. Often encountered by US-connected expats, these financial landmines are more numerous, more hazardous, and less understood than almost anywhere else in the world. As a result, non-cross border professionals, wealth advisors, and even international advisors are often unaware of them. But don't worry, We're The Brits In America has you covered. We're The Brits In America is dedicated to helping ambitious US-connected expats and immigrants navigate those challenges — and thrive. Whether you've moved to the US for opportunity, or are an American seeking adventure and growth abroad, our job is to equip you with the tools and insights you need to succeed. This episode is Part 1 of Stephanie's conversation with Michele Coleman. Make sure you subscribe for Part 2 coming in the next episode. In this episode I'm joined by one of our lovely clients, Michele Coleman, an Irish woman who left for the UK over 30 years ago to build a brilliant career in teaching and special education, and who has now started the journey home.Michele shares why she always felt that pull back to Ireland, even while enjoying opportunities in the UK that simply wouldn't have been available to her here at the time.We talk about the reality of coming back after decades away – the emotional side as much as the practical. Michele explains what's different about day-to-day life in Ireland compared to the southeast of England, from pace of life and community to the small interactions that make you feel like you belong. There's even a mention of how the Irish drive differently!Michele's story will give you a very honest feel for what “home” can look like after so many years, and why the pull back to Ireland is so strong despite decades away.Main Topics:Michele's Career Journey in the UK: Michele shares how a lack of opportunities in Ireland initially pushed her to the UK, where she built a long, successful career across mainstream and special education. The Emotional Pull of Returning to Ireland: Despite thriving professionally abroad, Michele describes a constant desire to return home, rooted in family, friendships, and a deep cultural connection.Life Transitions and Timing the Move Back: Michele speaks candidly about personal loss, retirement, and the moment she finally decided the time was right to buy a home in Ireland—even making the offer from Spain.Cultural and Lifestyle Differences Between Ireland and the UK: She reflects on the contrast in pace of life, accessibility, commuting, and social interactions, highlighting what feels distinctly Irish versus life in the southeast of England.Belonging, Community, and the Irish “Way of Being”: Michele and Stephanie discuss the everyday warmth, banter, and sense of community that define Irish life—and why those small moments matter so much to returning expats.*****Use the link below and quote "Expat Taxes" when registering with Currencies Direct to receive a €50 One4All or Amazon voucher when you transfer €5000 or more in your first six months with Currencies Direct.*Click here for a special offer from our sponsor, Currencies Direct******If you loved this episode or have a similar story, we'd love to hear from you! The future of the Business as Mission (BAM) movement rests on a powerful partnership: Expats as catalysts and Nationals as leaders. Join Mike Baer as he explores the vital, yet often misunderstood, roles of both in making disciples in the marketplace, expanding the kingdom, and achieving exponential growth.Mike argues that while expats are necessary pioneers to take the gospel where Christ is not named, their role is limited; it is the starting point, not the end. The long-term transformation of society and the exponential growth of the church will ultimately happen through nationals. They possess distinct advantages like language, cultural understanding, lower operational costs, and established relationships.Learn why we need to move from an unconscious bias toward "going" to a conscious effort of "handing over the reins" and equipping, mobilizing, and funding national BAM leaders for maximum global impact.Connect with Us:Website: https://thirdpathinitiative.comApple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-business-as-mission-podcast-with-mike-baer/id1551867793Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Gp5SOOHFggJ67vPA5qxkDLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikebaerFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/thirdpathinitiativeInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thirdpathinitiativeAbout Third Path InitiativeThird Path Initiative exists to equip believers to build sustainable, missional businesses that bring the gospel to the least reached. The discussion concludes with news of the launch of The Expat's Handbook, the first book by Atlas Wealth Group's Founder and Managing Director, Brett Evans, along with a reminder of the firm's Christmas office closure. South Africans abroad who lost their citizenship after acquiring another nationality can now breathe a sigh of relief. Following a landmark Constitutional Court ruling, the Department of Home Affairs has launched an online portal to help restore citizenship rights. In an interview with BizNews, Mary Paccard, the DA's global project manager, says that despite some early technical glitches the system is working well. She notes, however, that serious challenges remain at South Africa's embassies and consular services overseas, with the most pressing complaints being unanswered phones, slow responses to queries, and the very limited hours available to collect passports and other identity documents.
