It's time for another thematic episode - how do support systems impact rehabilitation of comic villains? And what techniques can we apply to the real world to reduce recidivism? This one gets a bit heady - strap in & listen now! SHOW NOTES: Intro Thanks to new Patron Dan Message from fan Jacob - “your podcast helped me get through some really s**tty times in the last couple weeks. I’m just wrapping up my undergrad degree in psychology, wanting to do something with addiction, and Doc’s way of speaking about psychiatry & practicing has genuinely reaffirmed why I wanted to take this path. When I didn’t really feel like studying for my exams I’d find an episode where you examined a character with said disorders or behaviors I was being tested on” New review - EmeraldGod - Doc and Anthony break down superheroes to a level that makes you go hmmm. They allow us to dive into the minds of characters to not only reveal a little about the character and how they see the world, but they also open them up and show us how we can make them more relevant and real. In a world full of would-be icons, this show helps bring modern-day mythologies upfront and personal. Thanks, guys for a great show. I am hooked. Consider this the podcast equivalent of Giant Size X-Men #1! It's an episode filled with big announcements, enormous thank yous, and an epic discussion about this incredibly influential film and the franchise it kicked off! We were all a little shocked when we realized that this original X-Men movie is already fifteen years old! What's really interesting about it now is that it's sort of a middle ground between the way comic book films were made and marketed in the 80s and 90s vs the way they're treated today. There's no question that this helped shape the landscape of the modern superhero movie, but there are still a lot of elements here that are holdovers from the previous era. Topics include: our history with the comics and the 90s cartoon, other versions of the film that were kicked around before Bryan Singer got involved, some initial skepticism about the age of certain characters, the incredible opening scene and why the Magneto/Professor X relationship is so central to the success of this property, whether or not Wolverine should be a leading man, the real reason this feels a little small in scope, how unfortunate it is that Cyclops and Storm get sidelined here, some issues with the costumes, some questions about Magneto's plan, and much much more! iTunes / Stitcher / RSS / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram About The Show
