Joe Illidge Talks Milestone Legacy and The Dakota Incident | Comic Crusaders Podcast #670

Joe Illidge Breaks Down Dakota's Legacy and the Future of Milestone in DC's New History of the DC Universe Comic book history is full of legendary moments, but few were as revolutionary as the arrival of Milestone Media in the 1990s. Created by industry visionaries including Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek Dingle, Milestone introduced a wave of heroes that reflected communities and perspectives rarely seen in mainstream comics. Now, that legacy continues with New History of the DC Universe: The Dakota Incident #1, a powerful new anthology exploring Dakota City's place within the larger DC mythology. At the center of this project is Joe Illidge, a respected creative voice in the comics industry who has worked across editorial, writing, and cultural advocacy roles throughout his career. Illidge has long been connected to the spirit of Milestone storytelling — stories that combine superhero action with real-world themes about identity, community, and social change. In The Dakota Incident, the narrative digs deeper into the events surrounding Dakota City and the heroes who protect it, exploring how these characters intersect with the broader history of the DC Universe. For longtime fans, the story represents a powerful return to one of comics' most important cultural milestones. For new readers, it offers an opportunity to discover why characters like Static, Icon, Rocket, and Hardware remain so influential today. As Illidge and the creative team expand the mythology of Dakota, they also reaffirm something fans have always known: Milestone isn't just a comic imprint. It's a movement. The Milestone Revolution: A Visual Timeline of Dakota City 1993 — Milestone Media Is Born In 1993, four visionary creators Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle launched Milestone Media, a publishing initiative designed to bring new voices, authentic communities, and diverse perspectives into superhero comics. Partnering with DC Comics for distribution, Milestone quickly became one of the most culturally important imprints in comics history. Their mission was simple but revolutionary: Create Superheroes that reflected the REAL World! 1994 — Dakota City Debuts The world is introduced to Dakota City, a fictional urban setting inspired by real American cities. Four major series launch almost simultaneously: • Static – teenage hero Virgil Hawkins becomes the electrifying voice of a new generation • Icon – an alien with the perspective of a Black conservative intellectual • Hardware – a corporate genius turned armored vigilante • Blood Syndicate – a street-level gang of superpowered antiheroes These comics brought social commentary, urban realism, and cultural authenticity rarely seen in superhero books at the time. 2000 — Static Shock Hits Television The character Static explodes into mainstream pop culture with the animated series Static Shock. The show runs for four seasons and introduces Dakota City and its heroes to an entirely new generation of fans. For many viewers, Static Shock becomes their first Black teenage superhero role model on television. 2020 — Milestone Returns After years of absence, Milestone Media returns with a major revival initiative. New series reintroduce Dakota City for modern readers: • Static Season One • Icon and Rocket Season One • Hardware Season One The revival reconnects the characters to the modern DC Universe while maintaining the cultural themes that made Milestone iconic. 2026 — The Dakota Incident Expands the DC Universe   With New History of the DC Universe: The Dakota Incident #1, Dakota City's heroes are woven deeper into the mythology of the DC Universe. This anthology explores how Dakota's heroes and history intersect with the larger DC timeline expanding the legacy of Milestone while opening new doors for future storytelling. For longtime fans, it's a celebration of a revolutionary imprint. For new readers, it's a reminder that Dakota City remains one of the most important settings in comic book history. Thank you for Watching / Listening! We appreciate your support! The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie, Star Wars Celebration 2027, and the Future of the DCAU Meta Description: Moose and Game God discuss the upcoming Mandalorian & Grogu movie, the announcement of Star Wars Celebration 2027, and why the DC Animated Universe continues to set the standard for superhero storytelling. The galaxy far, far away continues to expand, and Star Wars fans have plenty to be excited about. In Episode 515 of Podcast4SciFi, Moose and Game God dive into the latest news surrounding The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, discuss the significance of Star Wars Celebration 2027, and explore why the DC Animated Universe (DCAU) remains one of the most respected superhero franchises ever created. Whether you’re a fan of Star Wars, DC animation, or both, Episode 515 is packed with discussion, speculation, and plenty of geek culture goodness. The Mandalorian & Grogu: The Next Chapter Since their debut, Din Djarin and Grogu have become two of the most beloved characters in modern science fiction. What began as a streaming series phenomenon is now making the jump to the big screen with The Mandalorian & Grogu. During the episode, Moose and Game God discuss what this move means for Star Wars and whether the franchise is entering a new era of interconnected storytelling. Why Fans Are Excited The return of Din Djarin and Grogu in a theatrical adventure. The opportunity to experience Star Wars on the big screen again. Potential connections to future Star Wars projects and characters. The continued popularity of Grogu, one of the franchise’s most recognizable modern icons. The hosts also share their predictions about where the story could go and what surprises Lucasfilm may still have in store. Star Wars Celebration 2027: Looking Ahead One of the biggest pieces of Star Wars news is the announcement of Star Wars Celebration 2027. Celebration has become the premier event for Star Wars fans worldwide, bringing together creators, actors, collectors, cosplayers, and fans for major announcements and exclusive reveals. What Could Be Announced? While it’s still early, Moose and Game God discuss several possibilities: New Star Wars films and streaming projects. Updates on future Star Wars games. Expanded universe announcements. New collectibles, merchandise, and publishing initiatives. Surprises connected to The Mandalorian & Grogu. If history has taught Star Wars fans anything, it’s that Celebration often delivers unforgettable moments. Why the DCAU Still Matters The conversation then shifts from a galaxy far, far away to the world of superheroes. The DC Animated Universe (DCAU) continues to be regarded as one of the greatest examples of comic book storytelling. From classic animated series to newer projects, DC animation has consistently delivered compelling characters, emotional storytelling, and memorable performances. What Makes the DCAU Special? Strong character-driven stories. Faithful adaptations of iconic heroes and villains. Outstanding voice acting performances. Story arcs that appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers. Consistently high critical and audience ratings. The hosts discuss how modern animated projects continue to build on the foundation established by legendary series such as Batman, Superman, Justice League, and beyond. Star Wars vs. DC Animation: Different Strengths, Same Passion One of the most interesting discussions in Episode 515 centers around how these franchises approach storytelling. Star Wars excels at creating vast worlds filled with mythology, adventure, and wonder. Meanwhile, the DCAU focuses on character development and long-form storytelling that has influenced generations of fans. Rather than competing, both franchises showcase what makes science fiction and fantasy storytelling so enduring. Final Thoughts Episode 515 highlights why fans continue to be passionate about both Star Wars and DC animation. With The Mandalorian & Grogu on the horizon, Star Wars Celebration 2027 generating excitement, and the DCAU continuing to thrive, there’s never been a better time to be a sci-fi and superhero fan. If you enjoy discussions about movies, television, gaming, comics, and all things geek culture, be sure to listen to Episode 515 of Podcast4SciFi. Listen to Podcast4SciFi Join Moose, Game God, and the Podcast4SciFi crew as they explore the latest news, reviews, theories, and discussions from across the worlds of science fiction, fantasy, gaming, and pop culture. Josh and Aaron Sarnecky are here to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Superman Returns.Superman Returns is a superhero film directed by Bryan Singer, who co-wrote the movie with Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris. It is based on the DC Comics character Superman, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The film acts as both an alternate sequel to Superman II and a reimagining for the 21st century. The film opened in theaters on June 28, 2006.In the film, Superman/Clark Kent (Brandon Routh) returns to Earth after five years in space looking for the remains of Krypton. He must stop Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) from reshaping the map with stolen Kryptonian technology. Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) now has a husband and son, Richard (James Marsden) and Jason (Tristan Lake Leabu). She has moved on from Superman until he flies back into her life.Other characters include Daily Planet Editor-in-Chief Perry White (Frank Langella), photographer Jimmy Olsen (Sam Huntington), Luthor's henchwoman Kitty Kowalski (Parker Posey), and Clark's mother Martha Kent (Eva Marie Saint).Superman Returns received generally positive reviews, though over the years it has been less well-received by fans. The desire to forget the film is due in part to Singer and Spacey's legal issues. The film was nominated for one Oscar for Best Visual Effects.Superman Returns was the ninth-highest grossing film of 2006 but a commercial disappointment, grossing $391 million on a $204 million budget. No sequel was made and the franchise was rebooted with Man of Steel. Brandon Routh donned the cape again on The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths.Josh and Aaron discuss the first time each of them saw Superman Returns before going into the movie's plot, performances, action, and how the movie ties into previous installments. They also ponder the tricky question of what the movie's legacy is.For more superheroes, you can listen to Josh and Aaron's podcast with Kris Ingersoll on Captain America: Civil War.Superman Returns is streaming on HBO Max

In this episode of Supergirl Radio, Morgan Glennon and Rebecca Johnson discuss and review Supergirl: Survive (2026-) #1! Issue Description: Kara Zor-El lives a life of small problems. How are you supposed to hold a floppy little baby like her new cousin Kal? Who should she ask to the spring formal? And when will her father and her uncle Jor-El stop squabbling? But the planet Krypton has big problems…like the militaristic dictator Zod ruthlessly crushing dissent and threatening to unleash the planet's most dangerous weapons on the opposition. And when things boil over and Krypton begins to burn, Kara and her infant cousin will find themselves trapped together in a prototype rocket, struggling to survive in a hostile universe that doesn't care if they live or die…and which might prefer the latter! Breakout writers Ethan Parker and Griffin Sheridan (Eisner Award nominee Kill Your Darlings) join visionary artist Rod Reis (New Mutants) to tell the story of teenage Kara and infant Kal, sent on their journey through the stars together, not apart…that is, as long as Kara can keep him alive! Show notes provided by Joe PelusoIn the fall of 1941 a unique superhero was born to the nascent comic book industry. The creation of William Moulton Marston and Harry G. Peters, and bowing in All Star Comics # 8 (cover dated January 1942), Princess Diana, the Amazing Amazon from Paradise Island, burst upon a world at war as--WONDER WOMAN! Armed with the powers of the Greek Gods, and the awesome capacity to win the day with love andcompassion, Wonder Woman was an instant hit with four color readers.By 1943, the Amazon Princess was appearing regularly in "Sensation Comics", "Wonder Woman", and "Comic Cavalcade".Wonder Woman was going toe to toe with the big boys on the block--Superman, Batman and Captain Marvel! And when almost all the heroes fell into obscurity bythe early 1950's, Wonder Woman kept pace with only two other survivors--The Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Detective.   In the following decades, Wonder Woman's star would shine and dim. Its orbit caught in the vagaries of current tastes and trends. But there came a time when one legend was due to meet head on with another; a living legend of the comic book industry who had previously made his mark on such books as "The New Teen Titans", "The Fantastic Four", and "The Avengers". Following the universe reshuffling DCComics event-"Crisis on Infinite Earths", Princess Diana and George Perez met and began a tenure on one of the most historic comic book runs in history!  Please join James and Joe as "The Secret Origins of Mint Condition" finally pays tribute to this seminal hero and the creative genius who redefined her for a new age! Greek Mythology, magic, epic battles, customs and language barriers, new friends found, and the bonds of love and devotion that survive and conquer hate and war, are all ongraphic display by master storyteller--George Perez.    We hope that this podcast will inspire you to read (or reread)this magnificent comic book run so that you may discover howfriendship, courage  and devotion can overcome the most bleak times. Diana and George have given us the blueprint.

For nearly three decades, Comic Book Resources was one of the most influential destinations in comics journalism. What began as a fan-driven website in the mid-1990s grew into a daily stop for comic book news, creator interviews, reviews, industry rumors, and commentary, helping shape the way fans followed the business and culture of comics online.Today we're talking with the man who started it all, Jonah Weiland. We'll go back to the early days of the internet, when comics fandom was finding its voice online, and discuss how CBR evolved from a labor of love into one of the most recognized comic book media brands in the world. We'll talk about the site's groundbreaking columns, its relationships with publishers and creators, the challenges of covering an ever-changing industry, and what it was like building a digital comics community long before social media existed. But Jonah's story doesn't end with CBR. He also spent time at DC Comics working in publicity, giving him a unique perspective from both sides of the comics media landscape. We'll discuss that chapter of his career, what he learned promoting some of the industry's biggest projects, and how the business of comics has changed over the years. These days Jonah has turned his attention to the stage as an actor and playwright. We'll talk about his creative journey beyond comics and his latest play, Coffee Date, currently being performed at the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

Kenny Porter is a very busy comics creator! This week in Episode 748, we talk with him, who has had stories published by DC Comics, Image Comics, SEGA, and Top Cow, as well as Fearless from Scholastic and Barnstormers! from Insight Comics. If you visit your local comics shop, you are very likely to find at least two of his books there—The Schlub collected as a trade paperback from Image, and Superman: Father of Tomorrow from DC. Here's the description of that latter book: "In a corner of far-flung space, a world explodes. A lone rocket escapes the destruction and races through space, ultimately landing on a small farm in small-town Kansas. A kindly couple steps with trepidation toward the alien craft as the door opens. Out steps a man named Jor-El, the sole survivor of the planet Krypton! As Jor-El fits in to his new home, he realizes that he can help the world, not just with his newfound powers, but with his intellect as well. Witness how a Man of Steel and Science saves the world!" We talk about both books with Kenny as well as Operation: Iron Coffin, which is coming soon from IDW. You can check out his website at this link. It's time to witness what you were previously denied as a reader. Jadzia Axelrod returns to the podcast, talking full spoilers about her new weekly DC Pride event series, Justice League: Dream Girls. Done in collaboration with co-writer Nicole Maines, illustrators Nicola Scott, J. Bone, Ted Brandt, Ro Stein, and a mess load of others, this series reunites superheroes Galaxy and Dreamer immediately after the harrowing events of Justice League Intergalactic. They awaken as princess and champion of the Amazons, rescuing someone who sure looks a lot like Steve Trevor before being propelled into a dramatically different, animated Gotham landscape. Reality and unreality blend together. This week's episode offers a perfect opportunity for reflection: Jadzia Axelrod contemplating the non-linear path that her precious character has taken from Galaxy: The Pretties Star to Hawkgirl to Galaxy: As the World Falls Down to Justice League: Dream Girls. We discuss why her Galaxy pairs so beautifully with Nicole Maines' Dreamer, the tricky oppositions these two characters faced after Justice League Intergalactic, and how their trip through iconic DC storylines in Dream Girls reveals the brilliance and joy readers were previously denied in their comics. Justice League: Dream Girls #1 is out now from DC Comics, with each issue in the four-issue event hitting every Wednesday in June. It's written by Jadzia Axelrod and Nicole Mains, illustrated by Nicola Scott, J. Bone, Ted Brandt, and Ro Stein, colored by Marissa Louise and Dearbhla Kelly, and lettered by Jodie Troutman and Frank Cvetkovic. To continue this conversation with Jadzia Axelrod, make sure you're following her Website and BlueSky. This Week's Sponsors This June, Top Shelf Productions is bringing you unforgettable stories from the deeply personal to the absolutely colossal. Then, on June 23rd, buckle up for Minnie Pouches in the MicroRealm! From Caleb Goellner and Eric Lide comes a wildly imaginative all-ages adventure about a super-anxious super-strong girl battling pizza dinosaurs, laser robots, and floating nightmares across bizarre dimensions to rescue her pets and save her family.
