The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Michigan State Basketball Podcast.
September 21, 2023: Although basketball is a distant second in terms of importance to Michigan fans, there is still a good tradition of winning. However, Juwan Howard and the Wolverines seem to be slowly spiraling the drain. They enter the 2023-24 season after what can only be described as a disappointing season where they not only missed the NCAA tournament but lost in the NIT first round in a heart crushing fashion to Vanderbilt. The program feels like it is lost with strange roster construction and an inability to recruit to the level hoped for when Howard was hired. The Wolverines have struggled to recruit a point guard they trust going to the portal year after year. Worse yet, the team that never could get over the hump last year will enter this season without two first round NBA draft picks (Jett Howard and Coby Bufkin) and the consensus number one transfer portal player, Hunter Dickinson. It's hard to envision that this team is going anywhere in the near future except on a slow circling of the drain. Perhaps they squeeze into the NCAA this year but going forward the future doesn't look rosy. Are you looking for Spartan gear? There's only one place to go to get your MSU T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts — Nudge Printing. (https://www.nudgeprinting.com) Nudge is owned and operated by Gabe and Brittany, two MSU alums. The business is operated out of Michigan and screen prints super high quality products. They also have a large assortment of apparel for other schools as well as stickers for your wall, car, or computer. You can also buy our merchandise to sport around town where all the sales proceeds go to support the show. If you have a home in Michigan you know the importance of clearing water efficiently away from your home off the roof. Unfortunately, the outdoor beauty of Michigan means you have to deal with leaves and debris that pile up in your gutters. Sometimes, those gutters also can't keep up with the rain or leave puddles by your foundation. If you live in the Grand Rapids area (Muskegon to Saugatuck to Rockford to Lowell) contact Kurt Stauffer at the Brothers that Just Do Gutters. (https://www.brothersgutters.com/grand-rapids-mi/). If you're anywhere in the metro Detroit area the Brothers have you covered too! (https://www.brothersgutters.com/metro-detroit-mi/). They are real professionals who will clean, repair, or replace your gutters and protect your home quickly and efficiently with friendly service. Mention Final Four to get 10% off your gutter work. #Michigan #WolverinesBasketball #JuwanHoward #UMCirclingtheDrain

In this episode, Zach Shaw and Steve Lorenz preview the Michigan football team's Big Ten opener against Rutgers. They look at both sides of the ball, what the Wolverines can do to assure victory and make both prop bet predictions and their final score predictions for the game. They open with a look at Michigan's offense, and how it can crack Rutgers' defense after the Scarlet Knights fared well against the Wolverines the last two seasons. They look at the importance of scoring when points are available, JJ McCarthy bouncing back, spreading the ball around more and getting Donovan Edwards into a rhythm. In the second half of the episode, they look at the biggest keys — with one standing out well above the rest — for Michigan's defense. They discuss the value of making Rutgers one-dimensional, a secondary returning to full health and why this may be a good test for Michigan's tackling. They close with their final thoughts and score predictions for the game. My guest today says it's ok if Michigan is not hitting on all cylinders in September. This is a very talented group of players and coaches, and they know work needs to be done. He also said that based on the last two seasons there is no reason to believe we won't be peaking in November when those guys from C-Bus pay us a visit. With us today is beat writer Austin Meek from The Athletic

Michigan Wolverines football coach Jim Harbaugh is back with the team following his self-imposed three-game suspension for alleged recruiting violations. As expected, he returns to a 3-0 team with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in his cross-hairs for Michigan's Big 10 opener. Jim Harbaugh is the quarterback whisperer and JJ McCarthy could use him now following his 3 interception performance last weekend. During the Jim Harbaugh sabbatical, wide receiver Roman Wilson elevated his game. He has six touchdown catches in three games. Expect more of that between Wilson and McCarthy moving forward. Meanwhile, as the University of Michigan arch rival Ohio State University prepares for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Saturday, the Buckeyes defense has played at a historic level. We will explore that further. Plus we have the latest news and notes around the Big 10. Finally, we put out our weekly Big 10 Power Rankings on Locked on Big 10 with Craig Shemon. Half of the Big 10 quarterbacks played their worst games of the season this weekend. Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy threw 3 interceptions in the Wolverines win over Bowling Green. Nittany Lions quarterback Drew Allar played a mediocre game for Penn State. Good thing Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer was worse when he threw 4 interceptions. Iowa Hawkeyes quarterback Cade McNamara threw two picks and barely tallied 100 yards in Iowa's win over Western Michigan. Michigan State Spartans quarterback Noah Kim only completed 12 passes in their 41-7 loss to Michael Penix Jr. and the Washington Huskies. The Minnesota Golden Gophers wasted a nice running game and some fairly good defense against the North Carolina Tar Heels because quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis cannot create downfield. Week 3 did see some worthy quarterback play, though. Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Kyle McCord threw three touchdown passes vs Western Kentucky. The Buckeyes get ready for a big game against Notre Dame next! Tanner Mordecai crafted some nifty runs to lead the Wisconsin Badgers over Georgia Southern. Maryland Terps quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 342 yards and a touchdown in their win over Virginia on Friday. Plus, keep an eye on the Nebraska Huskers quarterback situation. Turnover prone Jeff Sims sat out Saturday's win vs Northern Illinois. Meanwhile Heinrich Haarberg played well in his place.
