Greetings, again. This week on the podcast, I sit down with Maryland Phil to break down Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four: First Steps. Together, we dive into the film's plot, character development, and the strengths and weaknesses of Marvel's First Family. From the striking retro-futuristic aesthetic to how this version stacks up against both the broader MCU and earlier Fantastic Four adaptations, no stone is left unturned. The conversation also touches on the Silver Surfer and Galactus, fan-favorite elements that spark plenty of debate. We share our overall scores while running through the good, the bad, and the ugly of the film. And of course, it wouldn't be a true Nerdcast without veering into general nerd territory—discussing upcoming movies, shows, action figures, and the never-ending cycle of comic books restarting at issue #1. Maryland Phil can be found on Twitter hosting @nerdragecast where he keeps us updated on the Nerd Rage happenings and comic and movie news. This time on General Witchfinders, we're heading into deep space — and hell itself — with the notorious 1997 science fiction horror film Event Horizon.··Directed by Paul Anderson and written by Philip Eisner, Event Horizon is set in 2047. A rescue crew investigates the ship Event Horizon, which vanished years earlier and is now orbiting Neptune.··After Mortal Kombat (1995), Anderson was suddenly in demand, linked to Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and even X-Men. Instead, he wanted a darker R-rated project. Paramount gave him Eisner's script, first about alien creatures, but Anderson reworked it into a haunted house in space, drawing on The Haunting and The Shining.··Filming was rushed when Titanic slipped its release. The first 130-minute cut was heavily trimmed after poor test screenings. One infamous scene, a Bosch-inspired vision of Hell using amputees and adult performers, survived only as brief flashes but fuelled the film's cult status.··The gravity drive began as a floating black hole but was redesigned as rotating spiked rings, echoing Clive Barker's Hellraiser and biblical Ophanim. Built to really move, it rattled so much that dialogue was re-recorded later. Eisner admitted Warhammer 40,000's “Warp” also influenced the idea.··At the time Anderson was credited as “Paul Anderson.” He later added the W. S. to avoid confusion with Paul Thomas Anderson. His later films include Resident Evil entries and Alien vs. Predator.··Filming took place at Pinewood Studios with visual effects by Cinesite and the Computer Film Company. The interior design was inspired by Notre Dame, creating a cruciform gothic cathedral feel. An early space station shot of Dr. Weir took 10 weeks, a third of the FX budget, and was redone more than 20 times. Composer Michael Kamen worked with Orbital for a hybrid score.··Laurence Fishburne plays Captain Miller of the Lewis and Clark. He later voiced the Silver Surfer, played Jack Crawford in Hannibal, and appeared in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3.··Sam Neill plays Dr. William Weir. Famous for Jurassic Park, he once auditioned for James Bond, losing to Timothy Dalton, and appeared in Possession and Omen III: The Final Conflict.··Jason Isaacs appears as D.J., the medic. Early credits include The Tall Guy. He went on to play Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter and Harry H. Corbett in The Curse of Steptoe. He recalled Event Horizon as “genuinely disturbing,” especially the “hell set.”··Sean Pertwee plays pilot Smith. Son of Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor, he appeared in Cadfael, horror favourite Dog Soldiers, and later Gotham as Alfred Pennyworth, reimagined as ex-special forces.··Event Horizon remains a cult 1990s sci-fi horror, combining gothic design, disturbing imagery, and a cast of future stars. Its lost footage and production stories keep fans returning to one of the most infamous horror films of the decade.·Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Hosted on Acast. Hello and welcome to Bill vs the MCU! Each month your hosts Pop Break Podcasting Director Alex Marcus and Pop Break Editor in Chief Bill Bodkin are taking another step into the wider Marvel Multiverse as the MCU dives deeper into their Multiverse Saga.Bill & Alex spent all of 2022 rewatching the first four phases of the MCU, and, in the years since, they have covered all of Netflix's The Defenders Saga, the first four seasons of ABC's Agents of SHIELD, and all 14 films in Fox's X-Verse.For the last six months they have been in their Marvel Zombie Era, where they put the spotlight on some iconic Marvel superheroes before the MCU had the chance to reinvent them, as the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps gradually approached. Now, they finally get into all the highs and lows of the latest entry in the Multiverse Saga. Who had a worse day, The Invisible Woman or The Silver Surfer? What happened to Ben Grimm's arc? Does Pedro work as Reed Richards? And what did they make of the magic CG baby? All that and more will be revealed! In their opening act, Bill and Alex dive into all the latest production news surrounding Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. They also unveil their plans for their new season!Come back next month as they kick off their season, Marvel's Animated Adventures, with a discussion of M.O.D.O.K. and Hitmonkey Season 1 & 2, available on Hulu and Disney Plus!
INTRO:I'm finally back after my NDE from a month-long bout with H1N1 earlier this year. I'm Hank Davis, a nineteen year podcasting veteran, filmmaker, and soon to be musician (more on that in the coming weeks) and this is my review of Marvel's Fantastic Four. This is a spoiler-filled review of the movie and if you are overly sensitive to satire (that may or may not be funny) this won't be the podcast for you. SETTINGS:When it comes to the sets and immersion I feel that Fantastic Four shines. This is the first Marvel movie in recent years (that I've watched anyway) that has areas which actually feel populated and expansive. Maybe there are simply more people on Earth-828. We'd need to see the census data compared to Earth-616 but I digress. The retro design of the areas, vehicles, building interiors, clothing, and household items gave me a Jetsons meets Flash Gordon vibe. I thought they nailed costumes which are darn near impeccable. The aesthetics coalesce to create a believable world that simply hasn't been present in a Marvel film in quite some time. But a world is only as good as the characters you put in it.CHARACTERS:Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm is believable, balanced, and didn't overpower the movie like Marvel tends to do female leads.Ben Grimm's portrayal is about as spot on as there's been in any incarnation of the character. While not my favorite, Joseph Quinn's Johnny Storm is likeable but not as punchy as the Chris Evans version. Thankfully, we didn't get the awkward “how are they related” gymnastics like the 2015 version. Outside of the writing Ralph Ineson does a solid job of bringing Galactus to life on the big screen. My sister's 8th grade sports trophy springs to life as Julia Garner attempts to give us a different take on Silver Surfer. While there's nothing like the original, Shalla-Bal didn't negatively impact the movie (outside of those initial concept renderings). Ultimately she portrayed a conflicted character that was believable. I laughed out loud when Stingray from Cobra Kai rolled in as the Mole Man. I guess Cobra Kai truly never dies! It's just been driven underground.Which unfortunately leads me to Reed Richards himself portrayed by Pedro Pascal. Pedro Pascal is as much Mister Fantastic as I'm Denzel Washington. I needed to see another Pedro lead like a golf club to the head (SFX). If you know, you know. He delivers amazing lines like "I don't know." and others that make you second guess the idea that he's the smartest man alive. I am suffering from Pedro fatigue!HITS:I'll say it again, the costumes were excellent! Even though I couldn't help but itch myself uncomfortably while looking at that material, the suits were incredible. The Thing was done justice in this movie! I thought about how cool playing a video game would be as he smashed through the columns of that building. Can we get The Thing vs The Hulk please? That's one of my favorite comic book childhood matchups.I liked the blending of high and low tech items. Seeing physical records made me nostalgic but didn't take away from the sophisticated feel the film delivers. The message of world-wide unity in the face of extreme turmoil was a refreshing insertion that didn't feel like a ‘nine iron to the head' political lecture.Who doesn't love a superpowered baby? Although I wished they would have fleshed that out more in this particular movie instead of hoping I watch what's next. A cute baby trumps an obnoxious dog any day of the week. I'm looking at you James Gunn!MISSES:Galactus is estimated to be approximately 440 meters tall.
The Fantastic Four has been brought to theaters multiple times, but each time the films have been critically panned … until now. The new Marvel Studio production, THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS, has received fabulous reviews and is Disney's hope to rebuild the comic book film franchise for their company. From IMDB: “Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, the Fantastic Four must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer.”The movie is directed by Game of Thrones veteran, Matt Shakman, and stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as the Fantastic Four. Though the movie was a big box office success on opening weekend, the movie has dropped dramatically in revenue the follow up weeks since its release on July 25, 2025. You co-hosts take a look at the new film and its prospects as a franchise starter.

Ian welcomes back author Ben Beard to discuss his latest, best, and most personal book, Four Horses, Seven Seals!Continuing his tradition of mixing autobiography with the pop culture that helped shape his life, Ben's latest work examines three bizarre totems from the year 1990: DC Comics' The Sandman, Depeche Mode's "Violator" album, and Adrian Lyne's film, Jacob's Ladder (which the guys review in moderate depth). While investigating the odd connections between these three works, Ben delves further into his own troubled journey to adulthood and falling out with religion. He also discovers cosmic coincidences involving the rise and fall of Elvis Presley's stepbrother, the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, and the twisted celestial visions of William Blake--all with the author's trademark blend of humor, horror, and relatability. In this wide-ranging interview, Ian and Ben talk about book's three main pillars; getting creative with chapter notes; the controversy surrounding Sandman author Neil Gaiman; and how 1990 presaged the next millennium's splintering of our collective consciousness!Four Horses, Seven Seals is now available on Amazon. SUMMER CROSSOVER SPECTACULAR CONTINUES! Comic book annuals are a remnant of the newsstand distribution era, when Marvel and DC tried to get some extra-sized product on the rack for the summer. With the advent of the direct market, annuals lost a bit of their luster, so Marvel began using them as a vehicle for linewide crossovers. “Atlantis Attacks” from 1989 sprawled across 14 annuals, contriving a way for the Silver Surfer, the Punisher, and three non-consecutive Spider-Man annuals to somehow participate in the same story as the Avengers and Fantastic Four. While Atlantis does indeed attack the surface world (eventually), the main focus of this story is actually the Deviant villain Ghaur, seeking to bring Set the Elder God to Earth. We also take a snapshot of the Marvel Universe circa 1989, learn the history of the Serpent Crown (it involves, canonically and inextricably, Conan the Barbarian) and celebrate Namor the Sub-Mariner's 50th anniversary (largely by sidelining him from the story).Discussed in this episode: Silver Surfer Annual #2, Iron Man Annual #10, X-Men Annual #13, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #23, Punisher Annual #2, Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #9, Daredevil Annual #4 (...or is it #5?), Avengers Annual #18, New Mutants Annual #5, X-Factor Annual #4, Web of Spider-Man Annual #5, Avengers West Coast Annual #4, Thor Annual #14, Fantastic Four Annual #22, plus New Mutants #76 and selected material from Marvel Comics Presents #26 and Avengers West Coast #56.Support the show at patreon.com/ironageofcomics

Editors - Nona Khodai ACE and Tim Roche The Fantastic Four: First Steps sees editors Nona Khodai and Tim Roche reunite for the 37th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the second reboot of the Fantastic Four film series. The film also marks the first time the two have worked together since Marvel's live action series debut, WandaVision. Although each had worked with him separately before, WandaVision was the first time both Nona and Tim worked with director Matt Shakman on a Marvel project. The Fantastic Four: First Steps takes place in 1964, as the world celebrates the fourth anniversary of astronauts Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm becoming the superhero team known as the Fantastic Four (Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and the Thing). But the celebration doesn't last for long as the four face their most daunting challenge yet as they defend Earth from Galactus and Silver Surfer. NONA KHODAI ACE A Southern California native and graduate of USC's Cinematic Arts school, Nona started her career as an assistant on such films as the Bad Robot production, Super 8. Her first foray as an editor on a "superhero" project came courtesy of showrunner Eric Kripke who brought her aboard the The Boys, where she would work with director Matt Shakman for the first time. Nona was twice nominted for an Emmy award for her work on Marvel's WandaVision, and nominated for another Emmy for Marvel's Ms. Marvel. TIM ROCHE Known for his work on comedy series like Silicon Valley and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, as well as for his contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including WandaVision, Thor: Love and Thunder and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Tim has received five Emmy nominations for his work, including one this year for Welcom To Wrexham, a show that has already brought him an ACE Eddie Award. Marvel's First Family has returned to the big screen.....could the THIRD (or actually fourth if we're counting the Roger Corman version which never got a proper theatrical release) time be the charm? Well it helps that they brought out the big guns: Matt Shankman (WandaVision) is directing and the all-star cast features Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian) as Reed Richards otherwise known as Mr. Fantastic, Vaness Kirby (Mission Impossible Fallout, Napoleon) as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn (A Quiet Place: Day One, Gladiator II) playing Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Emmy-winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear, Girls) as Ben Grimm otherwise known as Thing. This is still very much a stand-alone story mostly separate from the MCU (which this is a part of) as the Fab Four are settled in New York City but on an alternative Earth. And THIS Earth has some scary new visitors....the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) has come calling declaring that GALACTUS (Ralph Ineson) is on his way to consume the planet....who can stop them?? Let's find out out if Producer Kevin Feige's latest big screen heroes are up to the task.....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
The Fantastic Four finally arrive in the MCU... sort of? Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/the Thing must unite to save an alternate Earth from Ralph Ineson's Galactus and Julia Garner's Silver Surfer, but are their power's combined enough to set Marvel's Multiverse Saga back on track? What about the threat of Robert Downey Jr's Doctor Doom and the arrival of AVENGERS DOOMDAY? This week we're talking about the previous era of Chris Evans as a Marvel superhero. We're going back to 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer. We talk about the classic combination of Doug Jones and a voice actor, a Galactus you can't see, insisting Sue be blonde, and is this movie surprisingly good?
