SUMMER CROSSOVER SPECTACULAR CONTINUES! Comic book annuals are a remnant of the newsstand distribution era, when Marvel and DC tried to get some extra-sized product on the rack for the summer. With the advent of the direct market, annuals lost a bit of their luster, so Marvel began using them as a vehicle for linewide crossovers. “Atlantis Attacks” from 1989 sprawled across 14 annuals, contriving a way for the Silver Surfer, the Punisher, and three non-consecutive Spider-Man annuals to somehow participate in the same story as the Avengers and Fantastic Four. While Atlantis does indeed attack the surface world (eventually), the main focus of this story is actually the Deviant villain Ghaur, seeking to bring Set the Elder God to Earth. We also take a snapshot of the Marvel Universe circa 1989, learn the history of the Serpent Crown (it involves, canonically and inextricably, Conan the Barbarian) and celebrate Namor the Sub-Mariner's 50th anniversary (largely by sidelining him from the story).Discussed in this episode: Silver Surfer Annual #2, Iron Man Annual #10, X-Men Annual #13, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #23, Punisher Annual #2, Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #9, Daredevil Annual #4 (...or is it #5?), Avengers Annual #18, New Mutants Annual #5, X-Factor Annual #4, Web of Spider-Man Annual #5, Avengers West Coast Annual #4, Thor Annual #14, Fantastic Four Annual #22, plus New Mutants #76 and selected material from Marvel Comics Presents #26 and Avengers West Coast #56.Support the show at patreon.com/ironageofcomics

Can a gender-swapped character point us toward deeper truths rather than distract from them? That's the question Jeremy Jeremiah and James St. Simon explore in our latest conversation on Marvel's Fantastic Four 2025 and its bold reimagining of the Silver Surfer as a woman. At first glance, many believers might brace for another heavy-handed cultural message—but what unfolds is something far more interesting, even spiritually resonant. In an age where entertainment often leads with ideology over imagination, Fantastic Four surprises by putting storytelling first. Unlike past reboots like Ghostbusters or Ocean's 8, which often seemed to treat gender-swapping as the central appeal, this new Silver Surfer doesn't exist to make a statement—she exists to serve the story. And because of that, she works.Rooted in the multiverse logic of Earth-828, this version of the Surfer arrives with moral weight: a once-noble figure who sacrificed everything to save her own world now finds herself an unwilling agent of destruction. The paradox is powerful—and deeply Christian. What happens when self-sacrifice is distorted by the systems of the world? Can goodness remain when repurposed for evil? This isn't just good storytelling—it's a cinematic parable. It reminds us that true virtue, like Christ's, often comes through sacrifice, not through force or flash. The Surfer's arc offers a surprising mirror to the Gospel: salvation through suffering, strength in surrender, and the tragedy of corrupted mission. We also ask the hard question: Have Christians become so wary of “woke” Hollywood that we miss moments where the message actually aligns with deeper truth? What if some of these creative risks—even when imperfect—still invite us into conversations about identity, sacrifice, and redemption?Join us as we dive into this and more—seeking not just entertainment, but glimpses of the eternal hidden within today's culture. Editors - Nona Khodai ACE and Tim Roche The Fantastic Four: First Steps sees editors Nona Khodai and Tim Roche reunite for the 37th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the second reboot of the Fantastic Four film series. The film also marks the first time the two have worked together since Marvel's live action series debut, WandaVision. Although each had worked with him separately before, WandaVision was the first time both Nona and Tim worked with director Matt Shakman on a Marvel project. The Fantastic Four: First Steps takes place in 1964, as the world celebrates the fourth anniversary of astronauts Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm becoming the superhero team known as the Fantastic Four (Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and the Thing). But the celebration doesn't last for long as the four face their most daunting challenge yet as they defend Earth from Galactus and Silver Surfer. NONA KHODAI ACE A Southern California native and graduate of USC's Cinematic Arts school, Nona started her career as an assistant on such films as the Bad Robot production, Super 8. Her first foray as an editor on a "superhero" project came courtesy of showrunner Eric Kripke who brought her aboard the The Boys, where she would work with director Matt Shakman for the first time. Nona was twice nominted for an Emmy award for her work on Marvel's WandaVision, and nominated for another Emmy for Marvel's Ms. Marvel. TIM ROCHE Known for his work on comedy series like Silicon Valley and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, as well as for his contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including WandaVision, Thor: Love and Thunder and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Tim has received five Emmy nominations for his work, including one this year for Welcom To Wrexham, a show that has already brought him an ACE Eddie Award. Send us a textAs promised, this week on episode #109 of "Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to weigh in on the two big ticket super hero extravaganzas from the Summer of 2025: James Gunn's Superman starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisando, Wendell Pierce, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Sara Sampaio and Nicholas Hoult up against The Fantastic Four: First Steps directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner and Ralph Ineson. Returning for yet another daringly detailed deep dive into the world of fantastical four colored fantasies is nephew to a comic bookstore Kingpin, author, teacher and hypnotherapist, Joe Field. Before we blast off into the Ultra-Negative Zone, the synopses: In 2025's Superman, it is 3 years into his mission and Earth's Champion, The Man of Steel has met his match in Lex Luthor who causes a distraction with a giant monster and breaks into Superman's secret Fortress of Solitude where he translates a message from Superman's parents in which they instruct their son Kal El –Superman's Kryptonian name-- to take over earth and spread his seed. Using this jarringly awkward info to turn public opinion against our hero, Luthor has also made a clone of Superman called Ultraman who continually batters and beats the Man of Steel into submission. On top of that, Luthor has a Pocket Universe where he jails his enemies including his ex-girlfriends. And Lex has Ultraman place Superman in a cage with another a super powered being named Metamorpho who can weaken Superman by turning his hands into Kryptonite. Ultimately, Luthor's cruelty overwhelms Metamorpho who helps Superman escape the pocket universe but it in doing so, the unstable dimensional rift threatens to swallow Earth. It is only with the help of scrappy reporter Lois Lane and a team of heroes called The Justice Gang that Superman that is able to beat Ultraman, Luthor and close the rift. There's also some political stuff going on with two made up countries going to War because of Luthor's manipulations. In The Fantastic Four: First Steps it has been four years since Reed Richards, Sue Storm, her brother Johnny and Ben Grimm were transformed by cosmic rays into the world's protectors, super stretchy genius Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch and the rock man known as The Thing who are biggest celebrities on the planet. The exciting news that team leaders Reed Richards and Sue Storm are expecting their first child is put on the back burner by the arrival of the Silver Surfer the herald of the planet eating Celestial known as Galactus. Galactus tells the Fantastic Four that he will spare Earth in exchange for their yet unborn child, but that his too high a price to pay. With the public opinion against them, and world watching nervously, the team springs into action and devises a incredible plan to teleport planet earth into the far reaches of space. But then the Surfer and Galactus arrive and put the kabosh on the plan so the FF amends the plan to send Galactus himself into the far reaches of space, which seemed like the better strategy to begin with. In a cultural landscape where moral ambiguity and deconstructed families often dominate the screen, Fantastic Four surprises with a radiant affirmation of traditional family values and the sacredness of life. Beneath its retrofuturistic flair and cosmic spectacle lies a profoundly human—and dare we say, Christian—story about sacrificial love, the dignity of motherhood, and the redemptive power of faith. Join Jeremy Jeremiah, Mario Andrew, and James St. Simon in this fun discussion. At the heart of the film is Sue Storm, portrayed not as a feminist caricature or action trope, but as a luminous embodiment of maternal virtue. Faced with an excruciating moral dilemma—whether to sacrifice her unborn child to save the world—Sue refuses to accept a utilitarian calculus that pits life against life. Her courage to say "no" to both evil and compromise resonates deeply with the Christian ethic: that every life is sacred, and that love "always protects, always trusts, always hopes" (1 Corinthians 13:7). Her choice is not merely heroic—it's holy.Equally powerful is the portrayal of Reed Richards, played by Pedro Pascal. Rather than the tired stereotype of the aloof or foolish father, Reed is depicted as both brilliant and tender—a husband who listens, leads, and loves. Their marriage is a partnership of mutual respect and shared mission, echoing the biblical vision of man and woman as complementary reflections of God's image (Genesis 1:27).The film's most striking spiritual parallel may come through the Silver Surfer—a fallen messenger transformed by love and conscience. Once a herald of destruction, she embraces self-sacrifice to save others, offering a compelling image of redemption that echoes Christ's words: “Whoever loses his life for My sake will find it” (Matthew 10:39).Even Galactus, the film's cosmic antagonist, serves as a cautionary symbol: a voracious void of endless consumption, mirroring the spiritual danger of living without purpose or communion. He is the anti-Christ figure—not in religious terms, but in the sense of being the embodiment of appetite without love, power without sacrifice. In an era where storytelling often strips heroism of moral clarity and downplays the beauty of family, Fantastic Four feels like a breath of fresh air—an invitation to remember that true strength is not found in spectacle or self-interest, but in the willingness to love, protect, and give.If this is the direction Marvel is heading, there is reason for hope. Hollywood, it seems, may be rediscovering what Scripture has always affirmed: that the greatest stories are the ones that mirror the greatest truths.Find an Orthodox Church near you today. To pay for his daughter Vienna's ballet school in Paris, he returns to pro golf—and chaos ensues. The film leans hard into callbacks, celebrity cameos, and legacy sequel nostalgia. Director: Kyle Newacheck Writers: Tim Herlihy & Adam Sandler Cast: Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin Ben Stiller as Hal L. (in sobriety group leadership) Bad Bunny as Happy's new caddy Benny Safdie as golf mogul Frank Manatee Additional Cast: Sunny Sandler (Vienna), Sadie Sandler, Travis Kelce, Margaret Qualley, John Daly, Rory McIlroy, Eminem (cameos), and more sport & music legends Production Notes: Produced by Happy Madison and STX Films, filmed in North Jersey over fall 2024; directed by Newacheck with music by Rupert Gregson-Williams. The production is built around cameo-heavy nostalgia and real-world athletes. Budget: Estimated at $30 million, modest compared to legacy sequel standards. Distribution: Released globally via Netflix on July 25, 2025. Reception: Critics remain divided—mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (65%) and Popcornmeter (~70%). Praise comes for Sandler's commitment and cameo spectacle; criticism centers on overreliance on callbacks, tonally uneven storytelling (including a shocking death), and lazy legacy sequel tropes. Some outlets called it a “cinematic disaster,” while others saw it as funny and heartfelt escapism. Rating out of 10 Cameo Filled Nostalgic Rounds of Maxi Golf Darryl: 2/10 Brian: 7.5/10 Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) Summary Set in a retro‑futuristic 1960s alternate universe (Earth‑828), Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm are already established heroes expecting their first child. When cosmic threats like Galactus and Silver Surfer emerge, the team must band together to save the world—and their family dynamic. Director: Matt Shakman Writers: Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, Jeff Kaplan, Ian Springer; story contributions by Kat Wood Cast: Pedro Pascal (Mister Fantastic) Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman) Joseph Quinn (Human Torch) Ebon Moss‑Bachrach (The Thing) Julia Garner (Silver Surfer) Ralph Ineson (Galactus) Paul Walter Hauser (Mole Man/Harvey Elder) John Malkovich as Red Ghost (cameo) Production Notes: Filmed at Pinewood Studios in the UK with shoots in Derbyshire Dales and Oviedo; styled with practical miniatures, retro‑futuristic set design reminiscent of Jack Kirby comics; score by Michael Giacchino recorded at Abbey Road Studios; executive production overseen by Kevin Feige; post‑credits nod to late producer Jamie Christopher and director's mother Inez Shakman in homage scenes Budget: Estimated over $200 million Box Office (Opening Weekend): Domestic 3‑day: $117.6–118M across 4,125 theaters (including ~$57M previews) International: $100M from 52 territories Global debut: ~$218M Reception & Context: Critical consensus: ~88% on Rotten Tomatoes; CinemaScore “A‑” reflects strong audience response. Reviews praise cast chemistry, emotional grounding, and visual style—though tone is more serious than comic-minded critics expected. Some reviewers note a pacing lull and lack of overt humor from a director known for lighter work. Industry analysts call this the first confirmed MCU blockbuster of 2025—ushering in Phase 6 with confidence and momentum after previous underperformers. Marvel's First Family has returned to the big screen.....could the THIRD (or actually fourth if we're counting the Roger Corman version which never got a proper theatrical release) time be the charm? Well it helps that they brought out the big guns: Matt Shankman (WandaVision) is directing and the all-star cast features Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian) as Reed Richards otherwise known as Mr. Fantastic, Vaness Kirby (Mission Impossible Fallout, Napoleon) as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn (A Quiet Place: Day One, Gladiator II) playing Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Emmy-winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear, Girls) as Ben Grimm otherwise known as Thing. This is still very much a stand-alone story mostly separate from the MCU (which this is a part of) as the Fab Four are settled in New York City but on an alternative Earth. And THIS Earth has some scary new visitors....the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) has come calling declaring that GALACTUS (Ralph Ineson) is on his way to consume the planet....who can stop them?? Let's find out out if Producer Kevin Feige's latest big screen heroes are up to the task.....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
