Meridith Baer grew up on the grounds of San Quentin prison, acted in TV and movies, wrote scripts in Hollywood … and then, at 50, started over – and built one of the best known home-staging companies in real estate.Meridith's life unfolds like a movie: As a teenager, she was forced to give up her baby for adoption. In her twenties, she was a writer for Penthouse. In her thirties and forties, she was a screenwriter in Hollywood, hobnobbing with Sally Field and dating Patrick Stewart. But in her late forties, Meridith hit a wall. Her writing career stalled, so she poured her energy into fixing up the house she was renting. When the owner sold that house almost immediately, she stumbled onto a strange new idea: why not stage homes for a living? From there, Meridith turned a few pieces of thrift-store furniture and potted plants into a full-blown business: trucks, warehouses, hundreds of employees, and high-end homes across Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and beyond. Along the way, she weathered the pressures of scaling a creative service into an operational machine—without ever raising outside capital. What you'll learn:How to reshape a career at 50 (or any age) without a master planHow Meridith priced her work based on value created, not hours workedWhy you don't always need investors to grow a multi-million-dollar service businessThe psychology of home staging: designing spaces that make buyers fall in love in the first 10 secondsHow Meridith thinks about legacy, stepping back, and seizing new opportunitiesTimestamps: 06:08 – Growing up as a warden's daughter inside San Quentin11:01 – Teen pregnancy, forced adoption, and reunion decades later12:43 – From Pepsi commercials to Penthouse magazine19:58 – Selling a major movie script, recoiling at the finished product22:47 – How a breakup with Patrick Stewart totally reshaped Meridith's life27:41 – The accidental first staging job at age 5035:17 – Early days of the business: vans, day laborers from Home Depot, and naming her price47:18 – Unexpected struggles: tax trouble, a cancer diagnosis51:07 – The business expands to New York and beyond1:00:22 – Running a 320-person company at 78—and what comes next1:05:56 – Small Business SpotlightThis episode was produced by Alex Cheng, with music by Ramtin Arablouei. Jim Hill and Dan Graney unwrap a stocking full of Marvel mayhem in this fourth episode of the Marvel Us Disney reboot — a show equal parts MCU, theme-park history, and pop-culture cheer. They start with LEGO's new Marvel Avengers: Strange Tails (yes, that's T-A-I-L-S), plus a check-in on Jeremy Renner, David Harbour, and this year's Marvel merch blitz, Unwrap the Universe. From there it's on to the big one: Avengers: Doomsday. The Russos return, Robert Downey Jr. re-enters the MCU — as Doctor Doom — and the franchise looks to reset the board ahead of Secret Wars. Later, Jim and Dan explore Simu Liu's “love letter to superhero movies,” Patrick Stewart's possible farewell, and a “What If” worth debating — would Marvel even exist without the MCU? Finally, Jim opens the vault for Theme Park Archaeology, uncovering the Marvel attractions that never were — from Hong Kong's Oscorp Tower of Terror to Disneyland's unbuilt Wakanda expansion — and a first look at Rocket & Groot's Galaxy Spin coming to Disney Cruise Line. Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's November, so that means it's time for our “Xenovember” series, where we cover movies from another world! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and guest Chrissy Kurpeski discuss Tobe Hooper's trippy 1985 exploration of Britain being invaded by space vampires, Lifeforce!Disturbingly casual nudity! Drained corpses! Exploding dust bodies! Floating blood! A 150-mile-long gothic space umbrella! London in crisis! A surprisingly open-minded British government! Creepy spiral contact lenses! Unexpected narration! Scientific stick poking! A very sweaty cast that includes a fearless Mathilda May, a naturally voyeuristic Peter Firth, and a pre-Star Trek Patrick Stewart! A thrillingly weird movie with incredible practical effects from the legendary John Dykstra, and a script from Alien's Dan O'Bannon, this intensely-British movie is simply too strange to be forgotten! In addition, Chrissy shares her spoiler-free thoughts on Heart Eyes and Weapons, Alex does the same for A House of Dynamite and 1995's Species, and Tim says he enjoyed watching the majority of The Phoenician Scheme! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Check out the collection of fidgets Team Shiny loves! We gotta be able to handle hearing people talk about us, even when it's triggering and hard, because it can ultimately show us where the work is. And maybe you can be an expert on soething without having it yourself (like ADHD) but perhaps it requires a sense of curiosity, empathy, or some kind of introspection that recpognizes your lane, your scope, and your own biases? From anthropology and sociology to X-Men and who is Magneto and Charles Xavier, David and Isabelle meander through what it means to be an ally and also set up some solid recent hyperfixations.---We gotta tolerate hearing people talking about what they think about us, including people who have lots of degrees and expertise, and also know that each person doesn't have the answers. Maybe it has to do with conversations that people have about us without us ADHDers? Then again there are journalists, who don't have expertise but who can report on the data they get. David names that there are good and bad journalists, and there is critical thinking. How much about people's ADHD ‘expertise' includes interpersonal work and understanding about attachment, relationships, your own identity. Like, if you're an expert on ADHD and you're not friends with people who have ADHD outside of your work (if you yourself don't have it)—something to look at? David names that as therapists, we have this debate about multicultural approaches—do you need to have a white therapist to work with white clients, a Black therapist to work with Black therapists? You need to know your lane and your expertise. David's own therapist is not an expert in ADHD. And neither is Isabelle's. They know to ask us questions, can ask “how does this relate to ADHD?” We might be the person with ADHD that helps them better understand that. Allies don't want to get rid of parts of you, they want to help parts of you. An ally is different than a researcher, Isabelle wants to name that you need to be enough of an ally to a topic and be curious. In undergrad, she studied anthropology and archaeology, and it's a blend of super specific science and also lots of educated guessing. She remembers learning about participant observation in anthropology, that just by observing a culture or a group you are impacting the group. It's way more about noticing what your own biases are. David's own background in sociology, the idea of intersectionality. David didn't really think about ADHD or neurodiversity as a culture until college. He's a big comic book fan and he loved the X-Men. They're trying to hide their mutant powers to not be exploited by the government and the X-Men are trying to help these mutants and take them to saving. Charles Xavier and Magneto were portrayed to be iconic people. Magneto was Malcolm X while Charles Xavier was based on Martin Luther King, Jr. It's two different portrayals around protecting yourself—do you get violent and active or passive? Maybe the mutants are a great metaphor for neurodiversity as well as the civil rights war—if you have been marginalized you can have empathy toward other people who are marginalized. It's not so personal, people do things to us that they do to other marginalized groups. It can also signify that we have a culture. It would be if everyone says they have a pile of unfolded clothes that threaten your identity, your pile of mail—-culturally both David and Isabelle are both connected to the plan that they didn't want to leave it there. When we connect about parts of our culture. Isabelle and David so appreciate this conversation. Isabelle names asynchronous processing—she can't just off the cuff rattle off her ideas and also needs time to talk it out, externalize, and think about things beyond the initial moment or conversations. How important it is for us to keep having these conversations. Isabelle wonders if David is like Charles Xavier. He wishes he could be Charles Xavier. Isabelle might be Charles Xavier. Because maybe she loves or identifies with Patrick Stewart so much. So maybe David is Magneto—in the comic books they were best friends, and he was like “they'll never learn, we need to protect our people” whereas as the other is like “don't give in to our aggressive urges.” David needs to shout out: Dungeon Crawler Carl. Not wearing any pants, the cat jumps out of his house trying to get the cat out of the tree, and Carl can then go on an 18 level dungeon crawl and can save the planet earth. The audio book is a treasure, David is a big fan of role playing games, he consumed all seven books in less than three weeks. Isabelle names why cats get stuck in trees, their claws go the other way so they get stuck—but big cats can go backwards. Isabelle mentions an enneagram book that she really appreciates. She was hooked on Borders and loved it as a kid and would keep trying to have someone explain me to me, and one of those books was on the enneagram (which makes David feel like he went to the bathroom during learning fractions and never picked up on it). And she mispronounced it and would read the book at people. Because tell her she's neurospicy without telling her she's neurospicy.Stephanie Sarkis is an ADHD expert who also has ADHD X-Men and more on Patrick StewartThe American Psychological Association vote on 'homosexuality' being listed as a diagnosable mental disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) happened back in the LATE 80's (WHAAAATTTTT? yes).--there is a long history to depathologizing sexual identities, deeply impacted by tons of activism and advocacy. Malcolm McDowell joins cast members from the 1960s television show Star Trek and the 1987 sequel series The Next Generation, including William Shatner and Patrick Stewart. In the film, Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise-D joins forces with Captain James T. Kirk to stop the villain Tolian Soran from destroying a planetary system in his attempt to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. Generations was conceived as a transition from the original cast of the Star Trek films to the cast of The Next Generation. After developing several film ideas concurrently, the producers chose a script written by Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga. Production began while the final season of the television series was being made. The director was David Carson, who previously directed episodes of the television series; photography was by franchise newcomer John A. Alonzo. Filming took place on the Paramount Studios lots, and on location in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada, and Lone Pine, California. The film's climax was revised and reshot following poor reception from test audiences. The film uses a mix of traditional optical effects alongside computer-generated imagery and was scored by regular Star Trek composer Dennis McCarthy. Star Trek Generations was released in the United States on November 18, 1994. Paramount promoted the film with merchandising tie-ins, including toys, books, games, and a website—a first for a major motion picture. The film opened at the top of the United States box office in its first week of release and grossed a total of $118 million worldwide. Critical reception was mixed, with critics divided on the film's characters and comprehensibility to a casual viewer. It's one part siege movie, one part social horror, and all parts grim. When the Ain't Rights take a last-minute gig deep in Oregon's backwoods, they expect low pay and bad beer — not blood, dogs, machetes and Patrick Stewart as a terrifying skinhead ringleader. What follows is a night of panic, violence and duct-tape surgery, as the band fights to survive against an organised fascist militia who'd rather clean up witnesses than pay for another gig.We dig into:Punk authenticity — the grime, the DIY spirit, and how Saulnier nails the small-venue chaos.Patrick Stewart's casting — calm, chilling, and galaxies away from Captain Picard.Anton Yelchin's tragic final performance — and what a loss he was.Violence that hurts — no jump scares, just sudden, stomach-turning realism. The Nazi problem — why these villains feel horrifyingly believable in 2025.The A24 factor — another lean, mean indie proving the studio's knack for smart brutality.Elsewhere in the episode: ☕ The Top 5 Hot Drinks delivers peppermint tea, Dirty Harry's coffee, and more filth than a builder's thermos.

The third of six children, she attended the University of Chicago for three years, before deciding to wholeheartedly pursue an acting career. Billed as Marilu Henner, she originated the supporting role of Marty in the musical Grease at the University of Chicago's Community Theatre.Henner dropped out of school in 1972, in order to travel with the national company of Grease, at which time she carried on a highly publicized romance with co-star John Travolta. In 1976, she moved to New York, landing her first Broadway role in Over Here! Following a handful of forgettable stage performances, Henner made her cinematic debut as a stripper in the 1977 sleeper Between the Lines. In 1978, Henner landed the breakthrough role of her career on a new sitcom called Taxi. As single mother Elaine O'Connor-Nardo, she sought to gain entry to the exclusive professional and social circles of the fine arts world, while holding down a job as a cab driver and fending off the advances of her dispatcher, played by Danny DeVito. The popular show, which also starred Judd Hirsch and Tony Danza, aired for five seasons.A handful of film roles followed, including parts in Blake Edward's farce The Man Who Loved Women (1983), which starred Burt Reynolds, Kim Basinger and Julie Andrews, and the gangster spoof Johnny Dangerously (1984), with Michael Keaton. Over the next few years, Henner's body of work ranged from disappointing films like 1985's Perfect (which paired her with former beau John Travolta) to well-received comedies like L.A. Story (1991), starring Steve Martin and Patrick Stewart. In 1990, Henner found renewed TV success on the sitcom Evening Shade. She enjoyed a four-year run in her role as Ava Evans Newton, the wife of a high school athletics coach played by Burt Reynolds. In 1994, Henner hosted her own short-lived daily talk show, Marilu. Later that year, she published a revealing autobiography, By All Means Keep on Moving, in which she candidly discussed her sexual exploits with many of her Taxi co-stars, including Tony Danza and Judd Hirsch. In 1999, Henner played herself in the critically acclaimed film Man on the Moon, which documented the life of former Taxi cast member and famed comedian Andy Kaufman. She returned to the stage in 2000, headlining a national tour of the revival of Annie Get Your Gun.Henner has also ventured out into the realm of reality television. She served as host of the PBS series America's Ballroom Challenge (2006-09) and she competed in the first celebrity edition of Donald Trump's The Apprentice, aptly named Celebrity Apprentice, in 2008. She made it to Week 8 of the competition before getting fired, losing the chance to win the total prize for her charity, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. She returned in 2013 for All-Star Celebrity Apprentice, competing against the likes of Lil Jon, Trace Adkins and Dennis Rodman, among others. Although she lost yet again, she was able to last through Week 10 of the competition. During her second appearance on the show, Henner competed for The Alzheimer's Association.Henner has written and co-authored several books, including one on child rearing titled I Refuse to Raise a Brat: Straightforward Advice on Parenting in an Age of Overindulgence (1999). In addition, she has published two best-selling guides on health and beauty—The 30 Day Total Health Makeover (1999) and Healthy Life in the Kitchen (2000). Henner has also published several other books about health and fitness, including 2002's Healthy Holidays and 2012's Total Health Makeover, and has offered online classes to support her total health makeover program. Outside of her bestselling books, she has taken her stance on leading a healthy lifestyle to both the government and the classroom.Henner presented Congress with a dietary plan for children as part of the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act of 2010. She has also spoken at various schools and organizations, encouraging others to speak out to the government against unhealthy living and eating habits. After the release of Total Health Makeover, Henner went on a book tour and appeared on several talk shows, including The View and Good Morning America, to further promote her healthy lifestyle lessons. In December 2010, Henner revealed that she had highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM) during a segment on 60 Minutes. The condition, also known as Hyperthymesia, allows her to recall very specific moments in her life. She went on to talk about HSAM on several programs, showing off her hidden talent."You say April 3, 1992, and all of a sudden the whole week starts presenting itself to me," she told CBS. "That was a Friday and I was in New York, actually. Early that week I had won $1,760 at a winner-take-all Academy Awards pool. It was a clean sweep of the Oscars, Silence Of The Lambs, Jodie Foster."Neurobiologist James McGaugh began studying Henner's case of HSAM, along with others who have the same unusual memory patterns, in November 2009. The results were used in the television series Unforgettable for the character of Carrie Wells, a character inspired by Henner and played by Poppy Montgomery. In 1980, Henner wed Frederic Forrest; the couple divorced in 1982. She has two sons, Nicholas and Joseph, with her second husband, director/producer Robert Lieberman. The couple filed for divorce in June 2001. In December 2006, Henner wed Michael Brown, whom she had known in college.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
