Matthew Turner and Amelie Thomas (Fatal Attractions podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Matthew's choice Paprika. Paprika (2006) is an adult animated Japanese sci-fi fantasy film directed by Satoshi (Tokyo Godfathers) Kon. It is based on the novel of the same name by Yasutaka Tsutsui and it is claimed to have been a significant influence on Christopher Nolan's Inception, although Nolan has never confirmed this. Dr Atsuko Chiba is a scientist by day and a dream detective at night, working under the code name Paprika. When a device called at DC Mini, a device to the help psychiatric patients, is stolen Paprika and Detective Toshimi Konakawa's dreams and reality begin to merge as they try to recover the device. Recommendability for Paprika was mixed, although we all agreed the animation style was incredible and detailed. The complicated plot and surrealism isn't going to be for everyone. Scores across the remaining categories give Paprika an overall rating of 3.54. Historical simulation games, conflict simulation games or war games - call them what you will. There is certainly a huge following of this genre and there is an endless list of these games already on the market, with many more coming out each year. Many people are put off by the idea of replaying a real conflict from history, but of course, these types of games don't necessarily have to be about war, nor do they have to be set in history. In this article, I want to look at this genre of game and try and work out what it is that seems to attract me to it. A talented film critic, photographer, & podcaster based in England, Leslie Byron Pitt has written for Set the Tape & Empire Magazine, & has also been published on Vodzilla, Film Stories, & Little White Lies online. Additionally featured on Inside Cinema for the BBCi Player, when he isn't writing, doing expressive photography, or creating new pieces for print, Leslie can be found on the erotic thriller podcast Fatal Attractions. A returning guest from early in Season 2, when we did a really thoughtful episode devoted to three unique tales of human connection onscreen, in this terrific, fascinating conversation that's filled with research & rich insights, Watch With Jen continues its exploration into erotic cinema & the films of Paul Schrader this season with an in-depth look at Richard Gere's early breakout role in AMERICAN GIGOLO. Recently captivated by the way Gere skyrocketed to fame while taking on very daring roles that dealt with sexuality & questions of masculinity, Leslie & I move from GIGOLO to director Taylor Hackford's Oscar winner AN OFFICER & A GENTLEMAN, & then take a sharp left into Jim McBride's neon, rock 'n roll, comic book, & sex soaked remake of Jean-Luc Godard's BREATHLESS, which was a major influence on Quentin Tarantino. Jen's Note: I greatly respect and enjoy the level of analysis & research that Leslie brings to film discussions, & I know you'll enjoy this episode! However, while it isn't terribly explicit, due to the subject matter, much like the Schrader & Erotic '80s and '90s discussions, it's still one you should listen to without the kids. Matthew Turner and Amelie Thomas from Fatal Attractions podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Matthew's choice True Grit. True Grit is the 2010 Coen Brothers Western adapted from the the 1968 novel of the same name. It stars Jeff Bridges as Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross and co stars Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper. The previous film adaptation starred John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell. Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old farm girl, collects her father's body after he was shot while on a trip to buy horses by Tom (Brolin) Chaney. She hires a reluctant Rooster Cogburn to track Chaney down. He agrees to take her with him but departs without her. Furious Mattie pursues him riding alone and catches up with Rooster to find him riding with Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon). Rooster is left with no choice but to carry on with Mattie in tow. It earned a whopping ten Oscar nominations and failed to win a single one. Despite this, mainly due to Roger Deakins cinematography, True Grit remains a favourite among fans of the Coens and Westerns. True Grit had a mixed response for recommendability due to its western genre, you either like them or you don't! Slightly higher scores for the other categories gives an overall rating of 3.75 The Coen Brothers are currently the top featured Flixwatcher directors (along with Tarantino) and True Grit ranks ahead The Ballad of Buster Scruggs but below No Country for Old Men. Leslie Pitt (Fatal Attractions podcast and Hustlers of Culture podcast) and Reece Beaumont (Reos Positive POV) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Leslie's choice Blade Runner 2049. Blade Runner 2049 in a 2017 sequel to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982), directed by Denis Villeneuve it stars Ryan Gosling as K/Joe as Nexus-9 replicant working for the LAPD as a “blade runner” who retires (kills) rogue replicants. While on a job he discovers a box containing remains of a replicant that had a caesarean, proving that replicants can reproduce. His superior Lt. Joshi (Robin Wright) fears this knowledge could start a war between humans and replicants and orders K to cover the truth. The supporting cast also includes Harrison Ford (reprising his role as Deckard), Ana de Armas in her breakout role, Mackenzie Davis, Dave Bautista and David Dastmalchian. Blade Runner 2049 also earned Sir Roger Deakins his very much deserved first Oscar for Best Cinematography on his 14th nomination. Scores for Blade Runner 2049 were mixed, there were a few caveats to the scores for recommendability and due to the incredible cinematography low scores for small screen. However, it still manages to score a respectable 3.62 overall. For better or worse and death 'til us part—Excalibur is an X-Men comic now. It's also definitely a 90s comic, with all the explosive melodrama that implies But it's not all bad (in fact, some of it is even good!) in Excalibur #71, “Crossing Swords,” the tail end of the “Fatal Attractions” crossover in which Colossus doesn't understand the difference between atheism and nihilism and one good Jean/Rachel page demands a bad one. Amelie Thomas and Matthew Turner from Fatal Attractions podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Amelie's choice Into the Wild. Into the Wild is a 2007 drama about the life and adventures of Chris McCandless ("Alexander Supertramp”) directed by Sean Penn. Based on the non-fiction book of the same name written by Jon Krakauer which was based on McCandless' journal, the film stars Emile Hirsch as McCandless, Marcia Gay Harden as his mother, William Hurt as his father, Jena Malone, Catherine Keener, Brian Dierker, Vince Vaughn, Kristen Stewart, and Hal Holbrook. The film begins in April 1992 as McCandless arrives in Alaska and finds “The Magic Bus”. He is content and is very much living into the wild. The story of how he got to Alaska is told in flash back chapters and begins in May 1990 as he graduates. Zach, and returning guest, TFD: Nerdcast co-host, Chad Smith, continue their discussion of X-Men: Fatal Attractions!Magneto and his followers have returned to begin another chapter in the on-going war between Charles Xavier's X-Men, and the Mutant Brotherhood who would seek to destroy humankind, to allow homosuperior to become the rulers of the Earth. But this story is different. Lines between right and wrong, good and bad will be blurred, and Xavier and the others will have to make decisions that some might deem surprising. This 1993 event commemorated the 30th anniversary of the X-Men, and would be the flagship story that took us out of the Chris Clairemont era, and into a new era for these beloved characters that would survive well over a decade.---------------------------------------------------Join the Patreon to help us keep the lights on, and internet connected!https://www.patreon.com/tctwlWant to try out all the sweet gigs over on Fiverr.com?
