Dude....what? This guys like, my bud now and that makes me happy. My guest today has been a personal influence and legend of mine for about 12 years. His name is Parker Gispert and he fronts The Whigs. He's toured with other amazing acts like Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, Drive-By Truckers and a ton more. He's played a bunch of Late Night sets including ones with Dave Letterman. The bulk of our talk however is in reference to a time when he and his band took a chance on me at a show in San Diego and gave me a shot at playing onstage with them. Big moment for a 16 year old...Other than that we discuss rediscovering your identity as a solo artist, the difference between club and arena tours and the perks of quarantining in the woods. Enjoy! 1Song Performed: The Whigs - "Hot Bed" Song Featured: Parker Gispert - "Through the Canvas" Direct Support Playlist Email: dswithps@gmail.com Instagram: @directsupportpod Twitter: @dswithps Check out my band: Arms Akimbo

A couple of weeks ago we threw a party at our shop featuring a killer lineup with fourteen of our favorite bands. Luckily, our main sound man, Billy Bennett, managed to record some of them for posterity. In this month's episode of the podcast we listen to our favorite performances that made it to tape that day. It features live sets from Nadir Bliss, Billy Bennett, Parker Gispert, Chrome Pony, T. Hardy Morris, and The Nude Party. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The Whigs singer/guitarist Parker Gispert talks about rock costumes, how to make a record on the cheap in a frat house, Instagram, touring with the Kings of Leon, living on his farm, and his upcoming solo record.
I don’t often lead these reports with our Nashville Jam, but sometimes our show-closing, all-hands feature goes exceptionally well. And this week it felt like some cathartic starburst that brought together all of the energies and chemistries of the nights four acts. And that is exactly what it’s supposed to do under ideal circumstances. The song was “Why You Been Gone So Long?” from the pen of Mickey Newbury. A lot of us bluegrass heads glommed on to the song as recorded by Tony Rice. But my research says it was first recorded by the long forgotten Johnny Darrell in 1969 with a dank electric guitar twang and a twisty beat. And that’s the beat that Jim Lauderdale (who was back after a few weeks of being gone so long – why?) set up as Nikki Lane, Michaela Anne, Paul McDonald and Parker Gispert brought their distinctive voices to the verses. The choruses were huge and tight and joyful. Sometimes we really nail it. But it had been a special night all around by that point anyway.
Parker Gispert of The Whigs joins the podcast to discuss the music of Athens, GA. Parker and The Whigs came of age on the Athens music scene, and the music of The Elephant 6 collective had a big influence on him. Bands like The Glands, Of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Elf Power taught him a lot about how to be in a band and make your own music. We talk about his new solo project, The Whigs, and the Athens bands that influenced him.Get Parker's Athens playlist at http://originalfuzz.com/podcast, and follow him at http://instagram.com/parkergispert, and check out The Whigs at http://thewhigs.com.
