PipemanRadio Interviews CIVIC at Punk Rock Bowling XXV in Downtown Las Vegas.Australian punk band CIVIC is hitting the road in support of their forthcoming third album, Chrome Dipped, out May 30 via ATO Records. They are kicked things off with TWO shows at Punk Rock Bowling on Saturday, 5/24 and on Sunday, 5/25 at The Usual Place with New Bomb Turks. Known for their raw, adrenaline-fueled sound, CIVIC pushes beyond the boundaries of their '70s Australian punk roots on Chrome Dipped, marking a bold shift into new sonic territory while retaining their sharp intensity. Produced by Kirin J. Callinan, the album was recorded at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Tasmania—far from the outback house where their previous album, Taken By Force, came together. The result is a bigger, more expansive sound. Guitarist Lewis Hodgson sums it up best: “We've always stuck to the rules, doing Australian punk rock properly. But after touring the world, we realized—you can really do whatever the fuck you want.” Chrome Dipped is CIVIC unbound—provocative, unpredictable, and undeniably punk rock.Subscribe to The Adventures of Pipeman at https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-adventures-of-pipeman--941822/support Take some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. The 1980s proved that as big as forty-something millionaire cultural icon Bob Dylan was during the decade, he was not bigger than the ever-evolving and fickle world of rock and roll. ATO Records' A Tribute to Bob Dylan in the 80s contains seventeen covers of songs from Bob's least-celebrated decade.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Niko Kapetan AKA one-half of the band Friko. Originally from Evanston, IL, Niko had been writing songs since he was a teenager and formed Friko with his bandmate Bailey Minzenberger in 2019. After self-releasing a number of singles and EPs, the band signed with ATO Records, and in mid-February, ATO released their debut album Where We've Been, Where We Go from Here, and it's a delight! On this episode of the podcast, Grace Cummings talks about why her phone has been such a drain on her creativity and why she's making a conscious effort to stay away from it. But sometimes that phone can be pretty useful. For one, it allows Cummings to create her alter ego Cheryl. (You'll understand once you listen.) And it also allows her to create a fantastic filing system for her song ideas with labels like "excellent" and "very excellent" that we both agreed are pretty good mini pep-talks. Cummings's new album Ramona is out April 5 on ATO Records.
In Episode 60 I chat with Niko Kapetan of Chicago's up-and-coming Indie Rockers Friko about rare drink tickets, party weeks and hiding out in the green room. Having signed to ATO Records, home to the likes of King Gizzard, Altin Gun, Temples, Trey Anastasio and Primus amongst others, Friko's debut album 'Where we've been, Where we go from here' is due for release on Friday 16th February 2024. Chock full of emotional, poetic and explosive songs and mastered by Heba Kadry (Bjork, Big Thief) it's gotten some good hype in the press pre-release and Friko are setting themselves up to have a big 2024 with plans to tour the album through North America and Europe by the year's end. Niko joined me from Chicago's Humboldt Park neighbourhood to talk about how welcoming the Chicago scene is, being patient on stage and bare bone songs. A música "If the Creek Don't Rise" tem a presença de Emmylou Harris. Para divulgar o álbum, LeBlanc fez turnê e abriu shows para artistas como Lucinda Williams, The Civil Wars, Laura Marling, George Ezra e Calexico. O segundo álbum de LeBlanc, Cast the Same Old Shadow, foi lançado em agosto de 2012. Após seu lançamento, LeBlanc tocou com Bruce Springsteen, First Aid Kit, The Drive By Truckers e Alabama Shakes. A crítica do The Guardian sobre Cast the Same Old Shadow chamou suas canções de "tão bonitas quanto sombrias" e o álbum de "misterioso". --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/garimpandobolachas/message

Their debut album, "West of It All," set to release on September 15th via ATO Records, is a coming-of-age soundtrack that explores the landscape of their Texas origins while embracing the modern evolution of this cherished genre. With a unique blend of classic and contemporary influences, Briscoe's music transports listeners to the rural countryside of Texas while maintaining a fresh, forward-looking sound. The album, "West of It All," was crafted in the Lone Star State but found its recording home in North Carolina under the guidance of Grammy-nominated producer Brad Cook, known for his work with Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. The result is an album that defies traditional musical boundaries, seamlessly blending elements of folk, rock, and pop. The first single, "The Well," is a rootsy, foot-stomping anthem that captures the essence of Briscoe's energy and passion. Meanwhile, the second single, "Sparrows," offers a glimpse into their storytelling prowess, accompanied by a mesmerizing music video.Briscoe's journey began when they were signed by ATO Records while still undergraduates at the University of Texas at Austin. Drawing inspiration from their college experiences, the band weaves tales of heartbreak, life lessons, and adventures in the countryside into their music. Truett Heintzelman and Philip Lupton, the core members of Briscoe, are highly capable multi-instrumentalists who bring depth and authenticity to their songs. With acoustic guitars, plucky banjo, and harmonies that soar, they create a sound that nods to the golden era of folk and rock while embracing a modern sensibility.Briscoe's journey from humble beginnings, including free backyard performances near their college campus, to sold-out gigs at prestigious venues like Antone's Nightclub and The Continental Club Gallery is a testament to their organic growth and musical prowess. Pachyman - "Trago Coqueto," a 2023 single on ATO Records L.A.-based artist Pachy García — who records as Pachyman — reflects on his homeland of Puerto Rico on today's Song of the Day. “It's like a stream of consciousness,” he tells Remezcla. “I wanted to play with the idea of being a bartender, the profession of getting people drunk, and my constant dilemma about returning home – which I am still not ready to do. It's about grappling with the emotions of my daily life in a casual yet poetic manner.” You can find the track on his new LP, Switched-On, which comes out tomorrow, Friday, September 29th, via ATO Records. The album is a dub-filled delight, and was even recorded on the same model of mixing board that Lee “Scratch” Perry used in his Kingston studio. Today I talk to Philip and Truett from the Austin, Texas band BRISCOE. We talk about their recent show where they got to open for The Dave Matthews Band, the making of the new album WEST OF IT ALL, a couple of the songs off the new album and more! ABOUT BRISCOE: Briscoe is Truett Heintzelman and Philip Lupton. To record West of It All, the duo was joined by producer Brad Cook on bass, drummer Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), and multi-instrumentalist Phil Cook (Megafaun, Hiss Golden Messenger). Signed by ATO Records while undergrads, the Texan duo wrote West of It All as graduation loomed in the distance, funneling the stories of their college experience — from heartbreak to hard-won lessons to weekend trips into the rural countryside — into a raw, rugged blend of classic and contemporary influences. The result is a collection of 10 songs with folksy hooks and bold songwriting that bridges the gap between classic American roots music and its modern-day incarnation. Formed at University of Texas at Austin, Briscoe quickly went from college gigs to selling out Antone's and the Continental Club Gallery. As Briscoe continued to perform and grow their fanbase, a wider audience began to take notice. They soon opened shows for Noah Kahan and Ruston Kelly and were selected for dates with Zach Bryan and Caamp. After recently graduating from UT, Briscoe has had a packed touring summer filled with festivals alongside some of music's biggest names — Bonnaroo, Winnetka Music Festival, FairWell Festival, Catbird Music Festival, and Iron Blossom Music Festival are a few. The band is currently headlining a tour this fall to support West of It All. Grace Cummings is a spellbinding folk-rock musician influenced by 20th century poets and luminaries, from Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan to Brett Whitely and Van Gogh. Her songwriting is intensely personal and reflects a strong connection to the Australian landscape. Her sophomore album, Storm Queen, was released on ATO Records in January 2022, earning her global acclaim. In the leadup to WOMADelaide festival I chat with Grace Cummings about the creation of her Storm Queen album. We discussed changing vocal characters throughout the album, including various ambient features to provoke a sense of realness and upcoming new music.
This week, we cross the pond for a talk with rising British roots-rockers Will Turner and Georgie Fuller, who harness the freewheeling sonic spirit of the sixties with a new Brighton-based band they call The Heavy Heavy. While the British coast isn't exactly known for its blissed out sunshiny beaches (or as a haven for rock 'n' roll stardom), Will and Georgie decamped there during the pandemic. And through the power of imagination (and production wizardry), they somehow mastered the reverb-y sun-soaked harmonies that Laurel Canyon favorites the Mamas and the Papas and the Byrds brought forth during the summer of love, with their breakout EP Life And Life Only (with a wink to Mr. Dylan), issued stateside by ATO Records. The response to their Woodstock-flavored tracks like “Go Down River” and “All My Dreams,” led by pairing Will's roaring guitar and Georgie's gospel-tinted vocals, has been overwhelming. European tours with label-mates Black Pumas preceded national U.S. TV appearances and their first full run in America. While some could write them off as merely skilled nostalgia-hounds, what Turner has pulled off with his masterful production of Life And Life Only shows an obsessive attention to detail, helping resurrect a sound and, more importantly, a feeling that isn't stuck in the utopian hippie era, but could be the soundtrack to a more hopeful age that we may just be entering now. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a conversation between two young performers who are just this week starting a huge tour together: Marcus King and Neal Francis. King is a blues-rock prodigy who, at 26, already has a lifetime of music under his belt—both as leader of the Marcus King Band and, more recently, as a solo artist. Though he wasn't alive for the 1970s, King clearly has an affinity for that decade, with nods in his music to players like Jimi Hendrix and ZZ Top. He's earned a huge following over the years, which makes sense since he's been gigging since his teens. King's first solo disc, 2020's El Dorado, earned him a Grammy nomination, and for the brand new Youngblood he once again hooked up with producer Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. It's a scorcher. Check out a little bit of “Hard Working Man” from Youngblood, from a recent performance on Jimmy Fallon's show. Neal Francis is similarly enamored of 1970s sounds, though he leans more toward the funk and soul sides of things. Francis was in a band in his hometown of Chicago called The Heard, but graduated to more sophisticated sounds as a solo artist: Think Sly Stone and Elton John and you're on the right track. His latest album for ATO Records is called In Plain Sight, and it was partly inspired by Francis' time living in a haunted church in Chicago. Check out “Problems” from In Plain Sight right here. What both Marcus and Neil's records share is a little more seriousness than you might immediately hear in what sounds like party-friendly music. Both have had their bouts with substance issues and messy breakups, and those things make it into their songs. They're both also really interested in ghosts, as you'll hear: King isn't sure whether alcohol made him see a demon, but he's definitely seen it. They also talk about growing up bluesy, how David Lynch might translate into music, and the time-honored tradition of drawing dicks on dressing room walls. Enjoy. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

What is there that I could possibly say about this human being? It's a lengthy list, actually, and I know how we're all doing with attention spans these days. And that's fine. I know that -- if you care -- you'll read it, and if you don't, you won't. No big deal.I don't, um, mean to shun any of the previous guests of Badass Records Podcast, because they've all been super-fantastic. They really have.I've had my eye on this particular calendar date, though, and I feel really grateful that this conversation happened and did so with a quote/unquote timeliness as it pertains to the go-live launch date of this project, and that's because the nuts and bolts of this thing involve and require an investment to not only give time, but to be personal and honestish and vulnerable. And when the person you've known longer than most anyone on the planet agrees to sit down with you, you wanna do them right.Relationships are kinda like jobs. You gotta show up, clock in, and put in your 40 per week. At the very least. Or else the job essentially ends, right? And sometimes we take relationships for granted, and sometimes the fact that we've done just that (whether we realize it or not) does an unidentifiable bit of damage to the living, breathing thing that is the relationship. And sometimes we nurture and enable relationships when we probably shouldn't, and that has the potential to be damaging, too.Either way, they're delicate. Like newborns. You gotta support the neck and always have a burp cloth and a spare diaper on hand and don't be late for feedings or sleep, 'cause any one of those things can fuck shit up for the long-term.And I really like this relationship. It doesn't look like it always has, which has been a huge challenge for me to deal with and adjust to, and I haven't necessarily done a bang-up job at that, but I keep trying, and I think that maybe -- whether we know it or not -- that's all we really need from the important people in our lives: that they try.Anyway, this gal is one heck of a daughter. She's a pre-school director. She's a Hollywood fanatic. She's witty and she's organized. She's determined. And she makes one heck of a Mitt Romney video. She picked Crash by the Dave Matthews Band (1996), Everyday by Widespread Panic (1993), Live's 1994 release entitled Throwing Copper (1994), and a little blue number Phish put out that's called Rift (1993). If Yoda were here, he might say, Strong...with the early-to-mid-'90s...is this one.She also did her due diligence (not a Badass Records Podcast requirement, you should know) with her selections, in that she pondered and pondered and made a list and checked it twice. She's thorough like that. And she's epic, too. A can't-miss if you're new to B.R.P. She's amazing. She's a hoot. And she definitely makes my top-three-sister list.Tiffany Johnson, ladies and gentlemen.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio clips. They are samples from "Colors." This is a monster, mega-track from Black Pumas's self-titled 2019 release (c/o ATO Records, LLC), and because the inclusion of two 10-second clips of that song that bookend a three-hour, original-content conversation, this episode will probably get a YouTube copyright claim slapped on it, which means that -- were this episode ever to one day be monetizable -- I don't get to have any of that. But whatever. That's not the point here. The point is to have quality conversations with quality human beings about quality music. That's what we do, and that's what we did. As my daughter might say (in signing off on a TikTok video), "So...yeah...."

Nilüfer Yanya - "Stabilise" from the 2022 album Painless on ATO. British singer-songwriter Nilüfer Yanya will release her highly-anticipated sophomore full-length Painless on March 4th, 2022 via ATO Records. Today's Song of the Day is a sneak peek at the upcoming release, a meditation on the monotony of daily life. “I was really thinking about your surroundings and how much they influence or change your perception of things," Yanya stated in a press release. The accompanying video, directed by her sister Molly Daniel, explores this idea. “A lot of the city is just grey and concrete, there's no escape,” she continues. “The video plays on the central theme in the song of no one coming to save you ever. It's set in depths of reality in every day life where we are the only one's truly capable of salvaging or losing ourselves. Nothing is out there — both a depressing and reassuring statement (depending on how you look at it). Sometimes you have to dress up as a spy or a rock star and just hope for the best.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcome white-hot singer/songwriter/keyboardist NEAL FRANCIS to Episode 051! Neal is straight outta Chicago's buzz-bin, an artist riding a meteoric rise to the heart of the zeitgeist, thanks to his monumental 2019 debut solo LP Changes. On November 5th, Neal dropped his stunning sophomore record In Plain Sight on ATO Records, and has been touring hard in the run up to the release, including a raucous late-night performance at Suwannee Hulaween. In addition to an hour with Francis, Episode 051 includes a special Suwannee Hulaween tribute, and a recording of a profound talk courtesy of SOSMP philosopher-poet SCOTT T, which took place in the Oasis Tent at Hula 2021. 04:00 - Give Thanks: Suwannee Hulaween/SOSMP 10:15 - Neal Francis intro 17:15 - “Praeludium 2 in C-Minor” (J.S.Bach) by Neal Francis 19:00 - Neal Francis interview 1:24:00 - Scott T @ SOSMP intro 1:31:15 - Scott T - Spirit of Suwannee talk from Oasis Tent, Hula 2021 Just a couple of days before Hulaween, I had a chance to catch up with Neal in between tour stops in Charleston, SC. This was my first time meeting or speaking with him, and he's been doing a bunch of press for his new album; during the early part of the interview I was even a little nervous. But eventually, we connect in potent fashion, discussing his early days with Chi-town's nascent funk band The Heard, Francis' spiral into alcoholism, bottoming out, regrouping, rebirth, and the revolution/revelation that was debut album Changes. From there we get into his latest LP, collaborators like Sergio Rios (Orgone), David Shaw (The Revivalists), Chris Gelbuda, Derek Trucks, and a peek inside the church where Francis conceived and recorded In Plain Sight, as well as his muses and creative process. A very insightful conversation with nothing short of a shooting star. After Neal & I wrap up, we have a little more about Suwannee Hulaween 2021, including a recording from an inspiring, informative talk courtesy of Florida-based poet/musician Scott T. The topic du jour was (basically) the history, mystery, and mysticism of The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park. This illuminating and insightful TED-talk type situation took place on Friday 10/29 at Hulaween inside the Oasis Tent, which a sort of burgeoning educational tentacle of the Hula festival experience. I share some personal Hula reflections while introducing this talk. There has been a palpable buzz over the last little bit for singer songwriter Neal Francis whose album "In Plain Sight" is due out November 5th on ATO Records. This Chicago based piano player is a bit of a throwback in everything he does. From his personal aesthetic to the kind of music he makes, Francis would not be lost in the mid 70s. That isn't to suggest he's just a copy cat of people we dig like Dr. John, The Meters or Allen Toussaint. It's just that Neal gives you an immediate sense of comfort and familiarity and a distinct memory of what he's going for with his craft. Neal is full of insightful, wonderful lyrics and the chops both vocally and on his instrument to pull off one of the most complete album efforts this year. It was a pleasure to catch up with Neal Francis to talk about the new record and much more. We had the pleasure of interviewing SOJA over Zoom video!SOJA's new album, Beauty In The Silence (their first in four years), was released on September 24th via ATO Records. Earlier this summer, the band released the album's first three singles, “Something To Believe In” ft. Stick Figure, “Press Rewind” ft. Collie Buddz + J Boog and “The Day You Came” ft. UB40 + Rebelution which have racked up millions of streams across DSPs in the weeks since their debut. Fueled by the sheer force of the band's connection and chemistry, Beauty in the Silence makes for a much-needed antidote to fractured times, infusing so much warmth and wisdom and unstoppable joy into each and every track. Like 2014's acclaimed Amid the Noise and Haste (a GRAMMY nominee for Best Reggae Album), the title to Beauty in the Silence references the opening lines of Max Ehrmann's beloved poem “Desiderata”: Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence. “My dad had that poem memorized, and before I'd go out on tour he'd sort of whisper it in my ear,” said Hemphill. “To me, it's a reminder of what we lose when we get caught up in the distractions all around us. You get so used to life being loud and fast and goal-oriented, but then you go out in nature and hear the silence and realize, ‘Damn, I got tricked.' Life doesn't have to be all go, go, go. The real key to life is in being still.” SOJA deliberately took their time in creating Beauty in the Silence as they explored new sonic terrain—recording in such iconic spots as Miami's Circle House Studios and Dave Matthews Band's Haunted Hollow, and teaming up with producers like Niko Marzouca (Pharrell, Rick Ross, A$AP Rocky, Damian Marley), Mariano Aponte, and Johnny Cosmic—the band eventually phased into working remotely as stay-at-home orders set in across the country. In that process, lead guitarist Trevor Young (formerly SOJA's guitar tech) took on a much greater role in the band's creative direction, co-producing alongside Hemphill and carefully shaping the album's hypnotic sound.“I really love that this record is a mix of all of us together in a room and all of us far apart,” said Hemphill. “It's something that I'd love to keep doing in the future: let's get together, let's get the vibe and the groove, and then let's go off into our own worlds and discover what's there.” SOJA deepens that communal spirit by collaborating with some of the biggest names from all corners of the reggae world including: UB40, Slightly Stoopid, Stick Figure, Dirty Heads, Rebelution, Common Kings, Mihali, Nanpa Básico, Eli Mac and more. And while each artist brings their own distinct sensibilities to the mix, all of the guest musicians are deeply aligned with the band's mission of uplifting the masses. For more than two decades, SOJA has elated audiences across the globe with their fresh yet timeless take on roots reggae, a sound born from their shared passion for making music that transports and inspires. The band was originally formed by a group of friends while still in middle school and has since built a massive, dedicated global fan base. In the years following, SOJA has headlined shows in over 30 countries around the world, generated 7 million social media fans and more than 1 billion streams. We want to hear from you! Episode 65: To understand the unique and intricate Nashville based quintet Cordovas, you've got to flash back to the early 2000s when a songwriter from North Carolina named Joe Firstman was tearing it up in Los Angeles. Blazingly talented, he got signed to Atlantic Records but it was a brutal time for the music industry and he went his own way in 2005. He was the bandleader for a late night network show. Then it was time for rebuilding - and over a lot of years, Cordovas became the result. With smart guitar duo parts arranged by Lucca Soria and Toby Weaver, plus a loosely grooving rhythm section, Cordovas evokes The Band, The Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead. But they defy jam band logic with tightly constructed songs on their ATO Records debut That Santa Fe Chanel. Craig visits their home/rehearsal compound in Madison TN for a full band interview.
