Davey Allen is a versatile songwriter, musician, and artist. His work is deeply rooted in the vast American songbook. Allen has played music professionally for the past 20 years, the last six with Davey and The Midnights. The band formed on the west-side of Los Angeles, California in 2017. The group immediately set out to establish themselves as one of the hardest working Americana bands in Southern California. They've toured up and down the Western US coast, the deserts of the Southwest, the Rocky Mountains, the cornfields of the Midwest, and through the musical heartland of the US South. Since 2021 the band has called Indianapolis, Indiana home.Davey and The Midnights have shared the stage with acts such as Kelsey Waldon, Dale Watson, Jesse Daniel, Nikki Lane, TK and the Holy Know-Nothings, the Cordovas, Cristina Vane, Chris Pierce, Rob Leines, and Izaak Opatz. Their emotionally charged, high energy performances are not to be missed. Davey has also toured extensively as a solo artist and as keyboardist for rock hall of famer Eric Burdon. In addition, he has toured as a member of the San Francisco rock band The Stone Foxes. Davey is an advocate of many social causes and has previously donated a portion of his album sales to the Dolores Huerta Foundation and the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Center.
This field-defining volume of queer anthropology foregrounds both the brilliance of anthropological approaches to queer and trans life and the ways queer critique can reorient and transform anthropology. Consisting of fourteen original essays by both distinguished and new voices, Unsettling Queer Anthropology: Foundations, Reorientations, and Departures (Duke UP, 2024) advances a vision of queer anthropology grounded in decolonial, abolitionist, Black feminist, transnational, postcolonial, Indigenous, and queer of color approaches. Critically assessing both anthropology's queer innovations and its colonialist legacies, contributors highlight decades of work in queer anthropology; challenge the boundaries of anthropology's traditional methodologies, forms, and objects of study; and forge a critical, queer of color, decolonizing queer anthropology that unsettles anthropology's normative epistemologies. At a moment of revitalized calls to reckon with the white supremacist and settler colonial logics that continue to shape anthropology, this volume advances an anthropology accountable to the vitality of queer and trans life. Interview with Chelsea Nenni of Late Slip. Late Slip's ringleader, Chelsea Nenni, was born on the East Coast but grew up in California. Elvis Presley was her first love and Tom Petty's “Free Fallin'” her first favorite song. She studied opera in college, but Gwen Stefani gave her the guts to be in a band. Nenni moved to New York City in her mid-20's to pursue a life onstage. There she weaved through singing Sondheim, 1920's jazz, and then, during an especially fierce winter, taught herself how to play guitar. What started as a means to stave off seasonal depression turned into a vessel for big feelings. Now armed with a handful of chords, pangs of unrequited love and homesickness turned into the first Late Slip songs. I Love You is the first full-length album from Brooklyn-based retro-pop outfit, Late Slip. Thealbum was produced at the hands of Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, FIDLAR, Nikki Lane, Poolside)and is being released on 12” LP vinyl, CD, as a digital download, and via streaming platforms, June 7 th on Party Mermaid Records. Pesacov's transportive production delivers a nostalgic soundscape with a little bit of twang, alittle bit of surf, and a whole lotta heart. Nenni's sun-soaked, tear-stained gems tap into the tenderness we tend to lock away. I Love You offers the invitation to cozy up close, let your feelings flow, and dance it all away. In this week's episode, Sid Evans, Editor-in-Chief of Southern Living Magazine, chats with Nikki Lane, the artist who some call the “First Lady of Outlaw Country.” She grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, running around outside and riding four-wheelers before heading off to LA to pursue a career in fashion. Then, while living in New York City, a breakup led her to write her first batch of songs and she was on her way to Nashville. We'll also talk about her friendship with Loretta Lynn and her new album, ‘Denim & Diamonds.' Kathie Sever is an artist, designer, and the founder of Fort Lonesome, an Austin-based company that creates one-of-a-kind, hand-cranked, chain-stitched western wear. What started with Kathie hand-embroidering garments for friends out of her home has transformed over the years into a globally known fashion brand that is worn by well-known personalities such as Matthew McConaughey and singer-songwriter Nikki Lane. Using decades-old chain stitching machines, Kathie and her team create some of the most intricate and rich designs imaginable, and Fort Lonesome has been credited with the resurgence of Western wear's popularity in fashion circles around the world. - Kathie was born, raised, and educated in California, but soon after graduating from art school, she took off for Montana, where she worked at a dude ranch. She worked at the ranch off and on for several years, and she took note of how the ranchers brought creativity, craftsmanship, and an artist's eye to so many of their tasks– from welding to sewing to leatherwork. Kathie loved the idea of functional art, and she has since made a career of combining handcrafted artistry with pragmatic design. And now, as the head of Fort Lonesome, she and her team continue to innovate and push the boundaries of functional art with Fort Lonesome's unique brand of what they call Cosmic Western wear. - I loved this conversation with Kathie and could've talked with her for many more hours. We covered a lot, including Kathie's upbringing in California and how her family affected her artistic trajectory; her experience in Montana and how it laid the foundation for Fort Lonesome; her work as a pastry chef and the challenges of working in the restaurant scene of the 1990s; the power that can come as a result of negative experiences; her growth and evolution as a manager and business owner; how parenthood affected her goals; the pros and cons of working with famous people; the nervous feelings that come with creating art; our shared Enneagram personality profiles; favorite books; and much, much more. - Whether you're interested in art, fashion, the creative process, entrepreneurship, or balancing a career with the demands of parenthood, you'll glean a lot of value from this conversation. A huge thank you to Kathie for the conversation, and thank you for listening. --- Fort Lonesome Fort Lonesome on Instagram Full episode notes and links: https://mountainandprairie.com/kathie-sever/ --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 3:15 - How Kathie's childhood led her to a career in art 9:00 - Kathie's goals as she went into art school 10:00 - How Kathie ended up in Montana 13:30 - Kathie's takeaways from her time in Montana 15:45 - When Kathie started to recognize Western wear as a creative outlet 18:30 - Kathie's next steps after working at a ranch in Montana 20:15 - When pastry making came into the equation, and exploring the connection between pastry making and art 23:30 - Kathie's time in Austin and the misogyny she experienced in the restaurant scene in the late 90s 29:00 - Exploring the motivational power of negative experiences 32:00 - How having a kid impacted Kathie and how it led to her work with clothing 37:45 - Kathie's journey in figuring out the business side of making clothes 43:45 - When Kathie realized she was onto a good business idea, and how she balanced managing a small business from home while raising kids 1:00:00 - How oil painting impacted Kathie's embroidery work 1:03:45 - The first time a celebrity reached out for one of Kathie's pieces 1:07:15 - How Kathie balances her vision for her art with that of her clients when making clothes for performers 1:11:00 - Whether or not Kathie still feels nervous about putting her art into the world 1:18:30 - Kathie's vision for Fort Lonesome in the next 5-7 years 1:22:15 - Kathie's book recommendations --- ABOUT MOUNTAIN & PRAIRIE: Mountain & Prairie - All Episodes Mountain & Prairie Shop Mountain & Prairie on Instagram Upcoming Events About Ed Roberson Support Mountain & Prairie Leave a Review on Apple Podcasts

In this episode, Laura and Tracy sit down with songwriter, producer and publisher Luke Laird. Luke talks the magic of writers' rounds, being reluctant to ask for help, letting go of jealousy and the nitty gritty details of his early publishing deals. Laura also shares the story of a pivotal moment that lead to her being a songwriter. Ferocious talent, wit, and sincere humility rarely come together like they do in Grammy winner Luke Laird. Since moving to Nashville from a small farming town in Pennsylvania, Laird has become one of country and pop's top songwriters and producers. The numbers are staggering: 52 radio singles –– 24 of which were Billboard No. 1 hits and 5 of which were in the Top 5 –– 2 Billboard No. 1 singles as a producer, and more than 125 released cuts fill his catalog. In four separate years, every single released that Laird wrote peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. He earned ACM Songwriter of the Year honors in 2015, and was named BMI Songwriter of the Year in 2012. As a producer, Laird has helped shape some of music's most critically acclaimed projects of the last decade. He co-produced Kacey Musgraves' 2013 debut, Same Trailer, Different Park, which garnered Grammy honors for Best Country Album and an ACM Album of the Year win. In 2015, he returned to the studio with Musgraves to co-produce her triumphant sophomore release, Pageant Material. Laird earned his second Grammy for Best Country Song with Musgraves' “Space Cowboy” in 2019. He also has producer credits on Thomas Rhett, Ingrid Michaelson, Brett Eldredge, Steve Moakler, Everette, Kassi Ashton, Anna Vaus and more. A slew of Grammy, ACM, CMA, and other nominations line Laird's resume, which also includes six CMA Triple Play Awards, four NSAI “Songs I Wish I'd Written” Awards, the 2012 BMI Country Song of the Year trophy for Rodney Atkins' “Take a Back Road,” and more. His list of No. 1 singles reads like a carefully curated playlist of soulful contemporary country: “Hard To Forget” (Sam Hunt); “Fast” and “I See You” (Luke Bryan); “Head Over Boots” (Jon Pardi); “T-Shirt” (Thomas Rhett); “Gonna” and “Hillbilly Bone” (Blake Shelton); “Talladega,” “Give Me Back My Hometown,” and “Drink In My Hand” (Eric Church); “American Kids” (Kenny Chesney); “Sunshine & Whiskey” (Frankie Ballard); “One of Those Nights” (Tim McGraw); “Downtown” (Lady Antebellum); “Somebody's Heartbreak” (Hunter Hayes); “Beat This Summer” (Brad Paisley); “Pontoon” (Little Big Town); “You” (Chris Young); “A Little Bit Stronger” (Sara Evans); “Take A Back Road” (Rodney Atkins); and “Temporary Home,” “Undo It,” “So Small,” and “Last Name” (Carrie Underwood). Other artists who have recorded Laird-penned songs represent a jaw-dropping grab bag of genres: George Strait, Maren Morris, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Brandy Clark, Toby Keith, Jake Owen, Steve Moakler, Sister Hazel, Ingrid Michaelson, Ashley Monroe, Sam Hunt, Angaleena Presley, Nikki Lane, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Sheryl Crow, Brett Eldredge, Florida Georgia Line, Ne-Yo, Neal McCoy, Amy Grant, and many more. Laird recently released his own record, Music Row, that offers an intimate look into his journey from Hartstown to Nashville. The first-ever record from one of music's most trusted creators and collaborators, Music Row is a songwriter's story, traversing childhood, grief, addiction, family, and the community he loves. The songs are deeply personal and sometimes raw, all delivered by the songwriter himself. Today, Laird writes for and co-owns Nashville-based publishing and management company Creative Nation with his wife, Beth. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Not only is this week's guest a fantastic songwriter and performer, she is a genuine outlaw country SHERO, a rebellious tough girl with a tender heart, and, as she dubbed herself on her last record in 2017, a Highway Queen who has logged countless miles as a touring musician, while running several businesses at once. She is a woman who suffers no fools, but with a smile. On this new episode of SHEROES, we meet the many sides of Nashville singer-songwriter-entrepreneur Nikki Lane, as she sits down with Carmel Holt to talk about her fourth and most personal album, Denim and Diamonds. Hear how Nikki finally found the sound she had been striving for, reflecting on the roads that got her here, even when some of those roads got dark.
WHY DID BOBBY GENTRY STOP SINGING?https://www.theguardian.com/music/2018/oct/17/bobbie-gentry-trailblazing-queen-of-countryThe 60s star – who didn't just write her own songs but had her own TV show, made her own clothes and painted her own album art – could count Elvis and, later, Taylor Swift as fans. So why did she retire from public view in 1981?The first time I heard Ode to Billie Joe was on a 1967 Radio 1 special. Amid ornate psychedelic pop sounding a little like Strawberry Fields Forever, this tale of suicide, loneliness and familial breakdown was unlike any record I had ever heard. The place names – Tallahatchee, Carroll County, Choctaw Ridge – were cinematic, the singer's voice was husky, the string arrangement was minimal and eerie. What I heard was thick mud, damp moss, a barely moving river, dead air. The song was an inescapable fug. You couldn't move. You had to listen...A recently released eight-disc box set, The Girl from Chickasaw County, covers the bulk of her recording career: seven albums crammed into a brief period of intense fame between 1967 and 1971. Gentry's stock has risen over the last decade as she been name-checked by country stars such as Nikki Lane and Kacey Musgraves. Taylor Swift has been coy about the subject of her 2012 song The Lucky One, but it is almost certainly Gentry: “They still tell the legend of how you disappeared, how you took the money and your dignity, and got the hell out.” Gentry effectively retired from the studio in 1971, from the stage in 1981 and hasn't done an interview in 30-odd years. It was an almost impossible disappearing act, the kind many would love to pull off. She seems a very modern figure, a pioneer for women in pop, and her unavailability has only enhanced her mystique.
