We were honored to sit down with Hayes Carll during his busy AmericanaFest and talk about his new album "We're only Human," what inspired the album, how he takes on a song, and so much more!  Hayes Carll has spent over two decades building a reputation as one of Americana's most beloved and consistent voices—not by chasing trends, but by being unflinchingly himself.   At the heart of it, Hayes Carll is a storyteller with a songwriter's soul—always chasing truth, sometimes stumbling into grace, and never losing sight of the power in simply being human. His songs are filled with snapshots of quiet clarity, hard-won insight, and wry observation. Hesings like someone still doing the work—and that's what keeps people comingback. Because in a world full of noise, Hayes Carll offers something rare: a voice that's still listening. The sisters sat down with Abby Hamilton at AmericanaFest to talk about her previous album, "The #1 Zookeeper (of the San Diego Zoo)," her AmericanaFest experience, and what's coming next! If you've spent any time exploring Kentucky's booming music scene, chances are you've heard somebody say, “You've really got to hear Abby Hamilton.” Her latest single, “Midnight Call” was released in August 2025 and follows an acclaimed debut album, #1 Zookeeper (of the San Diego Zoo), released in 2023 via Blue Gown Records—a new imprint run by WhizzBangBAM's Ian Thornton (Tyler Childers) in partnership with Virgin Music. The album was produced by Justin Craig and Duane Lundy and further establishes Hamilton as one of music's most intriguing new voices. Of the record, American Songwriter praises, “infectious…introducing the acclaimed songsmith's captivating blend of folk and indie rock,” while Holler declares, “one of the most refreshingly out of step voices in country music has made one of the year's most genuinely brilliant and beautiful records” and Wide Open Country proclaims, “channels a universal relatability that will aid anyone's journey of self-discovery and healing”.  With influences ranging from the classic country divas to Bruce Springsteen, she wins over audiences with her clever lyrics and entrancing vocals. The born-and-raised in Nicholasville, KY singer-songwriter has garnered a reputation as a can't-miss live performer, opening for acts like Tyler Childers, Wynonna Judd, Deer Tick, Shakey Graves, Kelsey Waldon, Futurebirds, Blackberry Smoke, The Mountain Goats and Justin Wells. We had the opportunity to talk with Cyrena Wages during the hectic week of AmericanaFest about her upcoming album, her experience at AmericanaFest and her magical moment at the Hotel Indigo in downtown Nashville.  Cyrena Wages fell in love with music on the country backroads between Millington and Shelby Forest, two small towns just north of Memphis. Her father, the hometown judge, drove her to school every day in a 1967 gold Cadillac with the license plate “ROBN HD” on the back, an homage to the underdog ideology, and a conceptual through line of her debut 2024 album,Vanity Project.  The first single off Wages' Sophomore album, produced by Johnny Black and co-written with Black and Amie Miriello, was released in May 2025.  Cyrena says, “I didn't go in to make this new record feeling unheard. I didn't have pent up weight, or unarticulated pain. I feel like I wrote Vanity Project from a wound, and I am writing this project from a scar. If Vanity Project was despair, healing, and truth telling, this one is swagger, boundaries, levity, fun, and a sense of humor that I lost touch with for a longtime. And then, of course, a little darkness, too. But it all just has more of a wink and a backbeat to it this time. I will always live in the deep end. But I'm not drowning right now.”   Be sure to check out Cyrena here:  Website: Cyrenawages.com IG: cyrenawages FB: Cyrena Wages TikTok: cyrenawages

We had the pleasure of meeting Rachel McIntyre Smith at AmericanaFest this year and what a lovely person she is! We talked about her upbringing as a competitive pianst, her amazing merch, and her deluxe version of her EP "Honeysuckle Friend." With her lyrically driven songs, Rachel McIntyre Smith's comfort twang music reminds listeners of the classics while also adding a relevant and fresh perspective.  From a very young age, her mother, an English teacher, encouraged Rachel to write. She recalls, “I was fascinated with rhyming and pretended to not understand it so my mom would keep explaining it to me.” Rachel won several awards for her poetry and even won a scholarship to college for one of her short stories. As Rachel progressed in music, she started combining her two passions of music and writing.   Rachel began working with producer Dran Michael in the fall of 2020. Since the beginning of their partnership, Rachel has released multiple singles and her debut EP, Glory Daze, and her sophomore EP Honeysuckle Friend which have been featured on several media outlets including BBC Radio,Grady Smith's Youtube Channel, Holler Magazine, and Spotify's Fresh Finds Country, WDVX, and WMOT. Colby T. Helms was an absolute gem to talk to on the episode. We chatted about how he got started by performing around town, what's coming next, and his AmericanaFest experience (so far).  The Blue Ridge Mountains wind through eight states over astretch of 615 miles. In Virginia, they overlook Franklin County south ofRoanoke. Back in the day, bootleggers would refer to the area as “The MoonshineCapital of the World” due to its perfect placement to export contraband. Thesedays, the textile mills of Rocky Mount and other once cozy-towns have shutdown, leaving minimal opportunity and a lot of hopelessness. At the bottom ofthe Southwest Virginia foothills half-a-mile from the nearest neighbor, ColbyHelms resides in an “underground house” built by his late father. He hunts andtakes care of his mom. He also pens the kind of raw and real country music thatcuts to the bone. After signing to Photo Finish Records, he introduces himselfwith a series of 2023 singles and his forthcoming debut album.    Joined by his band The Virginia Creepers, he cut his teeth with countless gigs around the area. He also shared a series of arresting D.I.Y. performance videos on YouTube, including “Smoke and Flames.” With starkly honest songwriting and a sharp angular twang to his vocals, he struck adynamic balance between country storytelling, blue grass energy, and blues power. He caught the attention of Photo Finish Records and inked a deal with the label in 2023.  Now, he's shining a light on a very special part of America and offering up hope.   Be sure to check Colby out here:  Website: Colbyhelms.com IG: colbythelms FB: Colbythelms TikTok: Colbythelms YouTube: Colby T. The first time Abby Callahan heard Dolly Parton perform live, something clicked. At just 14 years old, watching from the audience with her mother and grandmother, Abby experienced what she describes as an epiphany: "I saw that and I was like, 'oh, that's what I want to do.'" That moment set her on a path from Iowa City to Nashville, where she's now carving out a distinctive space with what she calls "Kaleidoscope Country."Abby's debut EP "Grossly Aware" showcases her remarkable ability to blend Americana, indie pop, bluegrass, and folk into something uniquely her own. Her journey hasn't been straightforward—moving to Nashville during COVID meant isolation instead of the typical music scene immersion. Yet that solitude shaped her songwriting process, leading to deeply personal tracks like "I'll Bring Flowers," which she describes as "journaling when your therapist tells you to write in the morning."When her playful, suggestive song "Mary Jane" went viral, it created both opportunities and pushback. Some questioned whether her music belonged in country, but Abby turns criticism into creative fuel: "When someone says 'you can't do that,' I think, 'I have to prove everyone wrong.'" This determination has taken her from grueling nights playing Broadway bars until 3 AM (then attending 8 AM classes at Belmont) to performances at CMA Fest and Bonnaroo. What stands out most about Abby is her authenticity—her voice doesn't sound like anyone else's, and her lyrics reflect genuine experiences rather than manufactured emotions. As she prepares for her Americana Fest showcase and upcoming collaborations (including a reimagined "Mary Jane" with a special guest), she remains committed to the advice she'd give her younger self: "Try to be yourself more and not someone that people like, because that just doesn't work out."Ready to experience Kaleidoscope Country for yourself? Stream "Grossly Aware" now and follow Abby's journey as one of Nashville's most captivating new voices.

NEON COWGIRL  "The Neon Cowgirl-towering over Broadway like the patron saint of heartbreak in downtown Nashville as she smiles coyly over her shoulder in red cowboy boots-watched me grow up. Basking in her glow, I walked wide-eyed into the Ryman Auditorium as a 16 year-old, clutching my ticket. Later that night, dreaming of standing on that stage,  I drifted off to sleep in the bunk of our home on wheels at the KOA next to the Opry. When I was 18, she saw me flipping through Loretta Lynn CDs in Ernest Tubb Record Shop after performing the breakfast and lunch shows on the General Jackson showboat with my parents and brothers in our family band, The Neilsons. At 25, she watched me running all over town, meeting up with other songwriters-writing, writing, writing-before I had to fly back home to Canada again. At 30, I returned as a newlywed on my honeymoon, flying in from New Zealand where I'd moved for love, holding hands with my new husband in Hatch Show Print, introducing him to her like a family member. A decade passed without her as I built a life on the other side of the world and raised 2 babies. My heart raced as I returned to her once again, to showcase at Americanafest, playing to 12 people at 3rd and Lindsley. 5 years and many showcases later, I swear she smiled right at me as I stopped to point her out to my two children as we walked past her, through the doors of the Ryman to finally perform for the first time. NEON COWGIRL represents a lifelong dream of chasing Nashville and country music. I've loved her my whole life, even when she breaks my heart over and over again."   This weeks guest = Tami Neilson - through much hard work,  fierce determination and drive has begun to make all her dreams come true. She is blessed with a voice that's been described as "a fire breathing R&B belter" by Rolling Stone. Tami has now played the Ryman, sung a duet with her hero Willie Nelson. Travelled the highways and cities of the USA and Canada in an RV  with her NZ family,  so they could experience where she came from and the places on the planet she was singing about. Her latest adventure was opening for Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan as part of the Outlaw Music Festival.  Dreams DO come true. She's done all this while dealing with health issues and her brother Jay's recovery from major surgery.

Episode 300: When Gaby Moreno was announced as an official showcasing artist at this Fall's Americanafest, it stirred a tingle of recognition in me, but I had to do some digging to realize what a big deal it was. The Guatemala-born, Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter became part of the Watkins Family Hour at Largo in LA and a regular on Chris Thile's Live From Here Show. She's released nine records, winning two Latin Grammy Awards - and an album Grammy Award earlier this year. She's internationally known as one of the most versatile and enthralling voices in any genre, but her latest Dusk, produced by Nashville's Dan Knobler, brings a needed Spanglish influence to the Americana community. In this magical hour, we talk about what inspired her eclectic outlook and her many collaborations, including working with the legendary Van Dyke Parks.

This episode we talk with the ethereal Bailey Bigger about her new album "Resurrection Fern" and how she has grown and changed since her last album was released.   Resurrection Fern explores vulnerability, nature, and growth, all delivered through Bigger's distinctive lens. Known for her enchanting melodies and impeccable lyricism, Bigger dives deep into themes of renewal, fragility, and the resilience found in the human spirit. Each track feels like a conversation with an old friend, guiding listeners through moments of self-discovery and connection. As a storyteller, she paints pictures that are as vivid as they are introspective, drawing on personal experiences and weaving them into universal truths. Her poetic approach to music, combined with a rich vocal presence, marks her as one of the most exciting new voices in today's music landscape. With this release, Bigger continues to prove why she's being hailed as a fresh voice for her generation. Her ability to channel complex emotions into beautifully simple yet profound songs sets her apart, and Resurrection Fern is a testament to her growth as an artist and storyteller.  The 24 year old singer/songwriter/instrumentalist has collected back to back nominations at the Arkansas Country Music Awards, been named Songwriter of the Year in Memphis, won Audience-Favorite music video at Indie Film Fest, and has had multiple songs featured on TrueSouth on SEC Television. Bigger has traveled the country over the last four years, enchanting audiences with her siren song and classic American songwriting. She has shared stages and festival lineups with Sierra Ferrell, The Local Honeys, The Avett Brothers, and toured alongside Joe Purdy and Trampled by Turtles. Bailey's voice has graced the stages of Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Bluebird Cafe, Georgia Theater, and many festivals including FloydFest, Americanafest, and Memphis in May. Much inspired by her own Celtic heritage, folklore of the world surrounding her, and connection to the natural world, Bailey's new record, “Resurrection Fern,” (releasing October 25th) takes the listener on a journey through the four seasons, and the cycles of death that we, and the earth, face every year. Leaning into the mystery and lore of the unknown, human emotions, and the wild nature within all of us, “Resurrection Fern,” captures the magic that Bailey found within her years of tuning in deeper with the natural cycles, and the primal knowledge within.  Check her out here:  Website: Baileybigger.com Facebook: Bailey Bigger Music Instagram: Bailey Bigger TikTok: @coyotecreature

After a long hiatus hosts Will Payne Harrison and India Ramey are back with new episodes and a new logo. This episode Will Payne is interviewing India about her new album Baptized by the Blaze out on August 23rd.  India Ramey blazes a trail through cinematic spaghetti western landscapes to wood floored Honkytonks and the Appalachian foothills. India's musical journey was not typical. “Having grown up poor, there was a lot of pressure for me to ‘go to college and make money' so I convinced myself that music was a hobby”. Ramey, a domestic violence survivor graduated college, got a law degree and became a domestic violence prosecutor. “I thought if I was helping people like my Mom, I would like being a lawyer more”. Despite her love of helping people, Ramey's love for music won in the end. She gave up her law career to become a full time musician and songwriter and has never looked back. Featured as one of the “Must See Acts at SXSW, a Nashville's Lighting 100 artist of the week, a two-time Americanafest showcasing artist, and one of NPR's “10 Nashville Artists on the Rise”, India has only continued to rise among the ranks of as one of Country and Americana's brightest up and coming, emerging artists. Her most recent album, Shallow Graves debuted at number six on the Euro Americana Charts and landed a song as Rolling Stone's pick of the week. Billboard says of her performance in her 2020 Nashville residency performance, “The rollicking set recalls everyone from Tammy Wynette to Wanda Jackson.” Nashville's Americana radio station, WMOT says India is the perfect mixture of Loretta Lynn and Neko Case, Rolling Stone describes her as “Part Black Sabbath, part honky-tonk” and the BBC's Ralph McClean says “India is a singer of the truth, she knows the value of a well-told tale sung with passion and honesty. She is a bright light in the darkness. Long may she shine." Please rate and review the podcast and share with your friends. The Reckoning of Montreal Banjo-Witch Kaïa Kater, ep. 265

Basic Folk

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 13, 2024 83:59

After banjo player Kaïa Kater attended Americana Fest in 2016, the music industry started telling her she was a part of the genre, which encompasses all kinds of roots music, acoustic music, folk music, singer-songwriter and alternative country music. She was singing about heavy themes like historical trauma, her cultural heritage (her father is from the Caribbean country of Grenada) and her music history. She confesses in our interview that she never felt comfortable in Americana, that she was always just on the outside never fully feeling accepted by this mostly white world. Kater has declared that her new album, Strange Medicine, comes from a place that lays beyond the white gaze of Americana. This music is filled with emotional healing with music production that sonically reflects the vulnerability that she is expressing so deeply for the first time in her career. It's also the first time she's avoiding metaphors and really letting her most raw feelings about colonialism, sexism, racism, and misogyny rip. These songs see her using violent language and releasing emotions she'd previously kept frozen like anger and revenge. While creating Strange Medicine, she listened to a lot of instrumental music allowing her ears to be bigger than they had been on previous records. Which translated to her being more willing to take big swings and take risks. Kater attended school to learn film composition allowing her to be more comfortable with being a little bit more overstated in her songs, which certainly proves true on the new record. Another good piece of news is that the banjo is back! After using it very minimally on her last release, Kaia picked it up again after listening to a lot of Steve Reich, a composer who developed a groundbreaking minimalist style in the 1960s that's marked by repetition. His work helped Kater conceive of the banjo as an instrument that could hypnotically play patterns over and over. We go through this monumental album track by track and unwind songs with topics from Tituba's revenge (the first to be accused during the Salem witch trials) to getting the critic out of the room, to realizing the critic is you. She also recounts her history in her hometown of Montreal and what the Internet was like when she first logged on in the 2000's.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us?
