Peter Jesperson has had an incredible career in music. Initially inspired by watching The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, Peter took a job at legendary record store Oar Folkjokeopus in 1973 and became the primary DJ at Jay's Longhorn in 1977. He was a co-founder of Twin / Tone Records the following year. Along the way, Paul Westerberg dropped off the famous demo tape for The Replacements. Peter eventually became the manager for the 'Mats and spent time of the road with R.E.M. After overcoming some personal issues (he's now been 33 years sober!), Peter moved to LA and worked with New West Records and with artists like Vic Chestnutt, Jack Logan, The Flatlanders and many more. Most recently, he has written a fabulous new book, Euphoric Recall. We talked about his life and threw in some Chicago stories. The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers

This holiday season, the singer/songwriter, piano player, and all around musical overachiever Ben Folds released an album called Sleigher (in stores now from New West Records). It's not so much a "Ben Folds Christmas record" as it is a Ben Folds record set at Christmas. For this episode, which makes its debut on Christmas Eve, Paul chats with Ben about what went into the album, and detours into dogs, inflatable lawn Santas, the magic of Burt Bacharach, and what it means to be a human music maker in the age of Artificial Intelligence.  The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. This week, we welcome one of our favorite musicians to the show: Mark Lightcap of Acetone and the Dick Slessig Combo. Back in 2017, author Sam Sweet released a great book about Acetone called Hadley Lee Lightcap, accompanied by a stellar Light in the Attic anthology compilation,1992-2001. Writing about it, Transmissions host Jason P. Woodbury said: Though Acetone were label-mates with the Verve at Virgin subsidiary Vernon Yard, recorded for Neil Young's Vapor Records, and attracted high-profile fans like J. Spaceman and Hope Sandoval, nothing about 1992-2001 indicates a band bound for the spotlight. The trio's music, a heady mix of surf, country, exotica, hillbilly spirituals, and slow-motion indie rock, pulled from thrift store LPs and adhered to its own logic. Hadley, Lightcap, and Lee listened to music deeply, searching for elements beneath the surface. The band uncovered psychedelic qualities in unlikely places, turning up lysergic textures in mood music, Tiki kitsch, and Charlie Rich records.  Coupled with the foundational influences of the Velvet Underground, Brian Eno, Steve Reich, and Al Green, this strange blend takes time to reveal itself. Acetone's music requires patience. Lee's voice seems to float out of the speakers, his bass locked into meandering grooves with Hadley's meditative drums and Lightcap's tremolo and reverb-drenched guitar. Like its contemporaries, Low, Souled American, and Mercury Rev, Acetone created music that deconstructed and protracted rock & roll templates. We've kept on the Lightcap beat ever since. Back in the early days of the pandemic, we covered his other band, the Dick Slessig Combo, and their mystic, mantric 40+ minute version of Glen Campbell's “Wichita Lineman." Last year, New West Records reissued Acetone's discography, featuring illuminating liner notes by J. Spaceman of Spiritualized/Spaceman 3 and Drew Daniel of Matmos/The Soft Pink Truth. The occasion prompted a great conversation with Mark that we published in written form last year. This week on the show, he joins us for a loose talk from his backyard in LA. From “beautiful music” to his run-ins with Oasis, this conversation takes plenty of fascinating turns. There's plenty to read about Acetone and Dick Slessig over at Aquarium Drunkard. Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions. This week on the show, Joe Pernice of The Pernice Brothers, Scud Mountain Boys, and Chappaquiddick Skyline—as well as books, records, and other projects under his own name.  Since the early 2000s, Transmissions host Jason P. Woodbury have placed Joe on their personal Mount Rushmore of criminally underrated singer-songwriters. There have always been genres associated with Pernice's work—chamber pop, y'allternative, retro pop, power pop, indie—but it all comes back to those songs: literate, catchy, sly, funny, and often heartbreaking. We published a talk with Pernice last year on the occasion of The Pernice Brothers' 1998 album Overcome By Happiness receiving deluxe reissue treatment from New West Records. But with a brand new Pernice Brothers album, Who Will You Believe, still fresh in record stores, we figured it would be a blast to have him on to talk for the podcast. And we were right—chatting with Joe was a total blast, and you're going to enjoy this wide ranging talk about everything from David Berman to the internet to mortality.  Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. We had the pleasure of interviewing Jaime Wyatt over Zoom video! If love is a place, then Jaime Wyatt's found it with her ambitious and hopeful new album, Feel Good, brimming with joy and pushing her sound to new sonic and emotional heights, while blurring the lines between classic roots, southern soul, and vintage R&B. Today, Wyatt fully embraces that notion of musical effervescence with the grooving end of summer love song “Love Is A Place” where she expresses her experience learning to love another woman. It's the first time Wyatt has explicitly written with her intended queer-friendly pronouns since coming out publicly on her 2020 breakthrough Neon Cross. Wyatt originally wrote the ecstatic work of healing and self-acceptance “Love Is A Place” on the piano and considers it to be one of her favorite songs off of her upcoming Adrian Quesada-produced (Black Pumas) album Feel Good out November 3rd on New West Records. Wyatt has a love-hate relationship with her new home Nashville, Tennessee but with “Love Is A Place” she's taking a defiant stand for herself and her queer community and their innate right to Feel Good. “Love Is A Place” revels in the freedom of being seen for who you truly are, and trusting in it, as she sings: “She could free me from a lifetime of pain. And I've been down and out but never fallen. Love is a place I've never known. I'd like to go and would you take me there?”Praise for Jaime Wyatt's come from Pitchfork, NME, Fader, and NPR who love her “remarkable voice” as well as Rolling Stone who've applauded her “lush, layered, and complex” performances. Feel Good is undoubtedly her most ambitious album yet where Wyatt pushes her sound to new sonic and emotional heights. Already, she's unveiled the fierce, soulful meditation “World Worth Keeping” off the record about the kind of beauty that's worth fighting for, no matter how hopeless things may seem. Accompanied by a mind-bending journey of a music video, directed by Dylan Reyes, “World Worth Keeping” is rooted in its omniscient optimism and succinctly lays the groundwork for Wyatt's refusal to surrender to cynicism and negativity despite its ever-looming presence. Read her interview with Billboard about the song and album.Recorded with Black Pumas' Adrian Quesada, Feel Good is bold and ecstatic, built on tight, intoxicating grooves that belie the songs' substantial emotional stakes, showcasing Wyatt's unparalleled artistry and musical prowess. Wyatt's writing is unguarded and intuitive here, tapping into the deep recesses of her subconscious as she reckons with grief and growth, and her delivery is visceral to match, cutting straight to the bone with equal parts sensitivity and swagger. Taken as a whole, the collection stands as a radical act of creative liberation from an artist already known for pushing limits, a genre-defying work of healing, queer joy and self-love that tips its cap to everything from Al Green and Otis Redding to Waylon Jennings and Bobbie Gentry in its relentless pursuit of peace and pleasure. A West Coast native, Wyatt first began turning heads with her breakout 2017 debut, Felony Blues, which chronicled her now much-publicized battle with addiction and transformative journey through the criminal justice system. Her 2020 follow-up and New West debut, Neon Cross, tackled even more profoundly personal revelations and arrived to tremendous acclaim everywhere from Pitchfork, NME, NPR and Rolling Stone. We want to hear from you! Episode 240: Emily Nenni didn't fall in love with country music and then move to Nashville. She did the reverse, using the city's honky tonks and local haunts like country music college. And instead of the lure of the CMA Awards, the Bay Area native dove fully into the traditional end of the pool. Her sparky voice and detail-rich songs grabbed the attention of New West Records, which released her breakout album On The Ranch late last year. Also in the hour, a talk with New York writer Stephanie Clifford whose new novel The Farewell Tour tells the life story of a fictional artist in a realistic world, carrying us through the 20th century, from the west coast to Nashville and the long hard road.

But she was also making weirdly beautiful and honest music that evoked country blues, punk rock and old folk songs without being really any of the above. Now she's moved to Nashville, signed to New West Records, with one of the most talked-about albums in indie music. Raves have poured in for her new record Anarchist Gospel, which has an atmosphere all its own and bracing candor about heartbreak, struggle and resilience.

Anthony shares the story of working on a St Vincent publicity campaign, explains why the idea of being a sellout has gone out the window, and the two discuss Fantastic Cat, his side project that is “something of a supergroup”.Anthony D'Amato first rose to international attention with the ‘The Shipwreck From The Shore,' his 2014 debut for New West Records. Inspired in part by time spent studying with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Irish poet Paul Muldoon, the album garnered rave reviews on both sides of the pond. Along the way, D'Amato toured extensively across the US and Europe, sharing bills with the likes of Ben Folds, Valerie June, Keb' Mo', The Felice Brothers, American Aquarium, and many more. Seratones frontwoman A.J. Haynes and her Shreveport, Louisiana-based band (bassist, Travis Stewart and drummer, Jesse Gabriel) released their disco-inspired, third album Love & Algorhythms, earlier this year. At the time of writing the album, A.J. was also working full-time as an Abortion Advocate in the last standing Abortion clinic in Louisiana, an experience that brought her close to burnout and informed much of the record's theme of liberation, Afro-Futurism and radical joy as a form of protest. She draws from the works of Black Feminist authors in her lyrics –– from civil rights activist, Toni Cade Bambara ("The Salt Eaters") to Science Fiction writer Octavia Butler ("Xenogenesis") and queer activist, Audre Lorde ("A Burst of Light" and "Sister Outsider"). While no longer working at an abortion clinic, she is still the President of the Board at the New Orleans Abortion Fund, and continues the fight for Reproductive Rights. Many thanks for making this possible — A.J. what an absolute force you are! I have learnt so much. Thank you to Fat Possum for use of songs from the album Get Gone. And to New West Records for songs from Power and Love & Algorhythms. Amy Wright sits down for a one-on-one conversation with Nashville-based artist Joshua Hedley. A recent signee to New West Records, Hedley is an ace fiddle player, guitarist, and country music singer-songwriter. He's devoted his entire life to the study of country and western music, really, a life which he and Amy discuss in detail this hour. They also chat a great deal about his debut album for New West, Neon Blue, a record with 90s Country influences but a discernably tasteful and modern production. We fell in love with Hedley's sound after the release of his debut LP, Mr. Jukebox, which we named one of the best records of 2018, and we think his trajectory as an artist is upward and bright.Part of Pantheon Podcasts

So grab your favorite beverage, your coziest blanket and come join Dana in the Book Nook with her guest, prolific author & singer/songwriter Tim Easton!American songwriter Tim Easton was born on the Canadian border in upstate New York and spent his formative years living in Tokyo, Japan and Akron, Ohio. Traveling early and often, he learned the ways of the road and rails and spent 7 years as a bonafide troubadour, making his way around Europe, playing the streets and clubs, living in Paris, London, Madrid, Prague, Dublin, and wherever he laid his hat. It was this period of time when he developed his songwriting style - folk based storytelling and personal traveling tales, often peppered with bold confessions or "tell it as it is" reality. Rolling Stone Magazine praised him as "having a novelist's sense of humanity." Returning to his roots in North America, moving to New York City and then Los Angeles, he signed with New West Records and released five critically acclaimed solo albums starting with 2001's "The Truth About Us," which featured three fourths of WILCO as the backing band. Invitations to be a support act from mentors Lucinda Williams and John Hiatt arrived. Easton settled in the burgeoning art and music scene of Joshua Tree, California between worldwide tours. After becoming a Father and re-locating to Nashville, Easton recorded an album for THIRTY TIGERS ("NOT COOL" 2013), which accented the stripped down Memphis & Sun Studios sound of the Tennessee Three. His next album 2016's "AMERICAN FORK," was a grand departure from his previous efforts, featuring a fully flushed out backing band with elaborate songs arrangements. His most recent album, "Paco & The Melodic Polaroids," is a fully stripped down, solo-acoustic album celebrating 30 years of companionship with "Paco," his trusty Gibson J-45 acoustic guitar. The new project was recorded DIRECT TO LACQUER at The Earnest Tube Studio in Bristol, Virginia. Recently, Easton reached the milestone of having 100 Published original songs which he celebrated by releasing 100 solo performance videos on 100 consecutive days, all posted on his personal YouTube channel. He currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee. You can find Tim at www.timeaston.com or on all major social media platforms.Don't miss this episode...Just choose "Self Publish -N- 30 Days Podcast" when you click the magic link below!https://linktr.ee/selfpublishn30daysYou can also view this episode on our YouTube Channel here:https://youtu.be/QZ_j6MbX2XsTune in for a new episode every Tuesday night at 7:00 pm (CST). Don't forget to subscribe to our podcasts on iTunes, Spotify or Stitcher so you won't miss an episode! If you have been thinking about how to publish a book but you're not sure how, Self Publish -N- 30 Days is the company for you! Delbert McClinton has two gifts that have served him well. He's got a one in a million voice. It's thunder and whiskey and leather and silk. It's instantly recognizable. It's innate and inimitable. Delbert's other gift is a lifelong stubborn refusal to lend that voice to anything he doesn't love, and he's got really top drawer taste. He has released nothing for the sake of a short term hit and thus nothing that he needs to apologize for. Over 50 years. Delbert's the subject of a new biography, One of the Fortunate Few, which came out late last year. It's by established Texas-based music writer Diana Finlay Hendricks. It's a great read and it was great preparation to talk about coming of age in Ft Worth TX, lighting out for California on a whim and chasing dreams across the country living out of a bus for years. He helped establish a beach head for roots music in New York in the 70s and inspired the Blues Brothers band. He then settled in Nashville where his songwriting took new leaps forward and he made the best recordings of his career for New West Records.  Also, a conversation with John Strohm, the new president of Rounder Records and Sugar Hill Records, two legendary roots labels that are now part of the very large but musically-focused Concord Music group.
