The Keeper by Tana French On a cold night in the remote Irish village of Ardnakelty, a girl goes missing. Sweet, loving Rachel Holohan was about to be engaged to the son of the local big shot. Instead, she's dead in the river. In a close-knit small town, a death like this isn't simple. It comes wrapped in generations-old grudges and power struggles, and it splits the townland in two. Retired Chicago detective Cal Hooper has friends here now, and he owes them loyalty, but his fiancée Lena wants nothing to do with Ardnakelty's tangles. As the feud becomes more vicious, their settled peace starts to crack apart. And when they uncover a scheme that casts a new light on Rachel's death and threatens the whole village, they find themselves in the firing line. The Infinite Sadness of Small Appliances by Glenn Dixon In a self-running, smart house, a young and sentient Roomba listens as her owner, Harold, reads aloud to his dying wife, Edie. Mesmerized by To Kill a Mockingbird and craving the human connection she witnesses in Harold's stories, the little vacuum renames herself Scout and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. But when Edie passes away, Scout and her fellow sentient appliances discover that there are sinister forces in their midst. The omnipresent Grid, which monitors every household in the City, seeks to remove Harold from his home, a place he's lived in for fifty years. With the help of Adrian, a neighborhood boy who grows close to Scout and Harold, as well as Kate, Harold and Edie's formerly estranged daughter, the humans and the appliances must come together to outwit the all-controlling Grid lest they risk losing everything they hold dear. What if the most extraordinary Person in the universe stepped into your everyday life…and you missed Him?In Luke 10, Martha welcomes Jesus, serves Him, and believes in Him...and still misses what matters most. This Sunday, we'll see how easy it is to miss Jesus…even with good things...and what it looks like to be truly captivated by Him.Don't just be near Him.Don't just stay busy for Him.Fix your eyes on Him.Don't miss Jesus.Sermon Outline:I. Missing Jesus. II. Mesmerized by Jesus. Small Group Questions:1. In Luke 10:38-42, what do you learn about who Jesus is from the way He responds to Martha...and what does that reveal about His heart toward you? 2. Martha is distracted by good things, not bad things. What “good things” in your life are most likely causing you to miss Jesus right now? 3. Mary is focused on the person of Jesus, not just a general idea of God. What's the difference...and how does that show up in your daily life? 4. Jesus says, “one thing is necessary.” How does what He has already done for you free you from striving...and invite you to rest your attention on Him?5. What would it look like this week (espeically Holy Week) not just to avoid missing Jesus...but to be captivated by Him? Where might you need to slow down, listen, and give Him your attention?

In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Brit Griffin about her novel, The Haunting of Modesto O'Brien (Latitude 46, 2025). A gothic tale from deep within the boreal forest… Violence and greed have intruded into a wild and remote land. It's 1907, and silver fever has drawn thousands of men into a fledgling mining camp in the heart of the wilderness. Modesto O'Brien, fortune-teller and detective, is there too - but he isn't looking for riches. He's seeking revenge. O'Brien soon finds himself entangled with the mysterious Nail sisters, Lucy and Lily. On the run from their past and headed for trouble, Lily turns to O'Brien when Lucy goes missing. But what should have been a straightforward case of kidnapping pulls O'Brien into a world of ancient myths, magic, and male violence. As he searches for Lucy, O'Brien fears that dark forces are emerging from the ravaged landscape. Mesmerized by a nightmarish creature stalking the wilderness, and haunted by his past, O'Brien struggles to maintain his grip on reality as he faces hard choices about loyalty, sacrifice, and revenge. Brit Griffin is the author of the climate-fiction Wintermen trilogy (Latitude 46) and has written essays, musings, and articles for various publications. Griffin spent many years as a researcher for the Timiskaming First Nation, an Algonquin community in northern Quebec. She lives in Cobalt, northern Ontario, where she is the mother of three grown daughters. These days, she divides her time between writing and caring for her unruly yard. Bryce had a playful pet dog named Biscuit, who was always by his side. One day, the two friends decided to visit the carnival. That afternoon, they got ready, excited to explore the colorful festivities by evening. The carnival was vibrant and lively, with spinning cotton candy, fire breathers, and popcorn stalls filling the air with joy and excitement. Mesmerized by the fire breathers' dazzling performance, Bryce and Kyle lost track of everything around them, including Biscuit. In the bustling crowd, Biscuit wandered off, unnoticed. After some time, Bryce suddenly realized Biscuit was no longer with them. Worried, he turned to Kyle and asked, "Where's Biscuit?" They searched the carnival frantically, calling out his name, but Biscuit was nowhere to be found. Heartbroken, they returned home, feeling helpless.Bryce and Kyle went home sad. But the next morning determined not to give up , they started asking people in the neighborhood if they had seen Biscuit. They even asked the ice cream man, but he said, “I don't know your dog, but maybe I can help if you show me a picture.”Bryce said, “That's genius!” They ran back to Bryce's house, flipped the family photo album, and grabbed the adorable picture of Biscuit. Then they made big posters and put them all around the neighborhood, hoping somebody would recognize Biscuit.Exhausted but hopeful, they returned to Bryce's house and waited anxiously by the phone. The night passed without any news, and Kyle eventually said goodnight and went home. The next morning, while Bryce's parents enjoyed their morning tea, Bryce lay in bed, silently wishing for a miracle. Suddenly, the phone rang! He handed the phone to his dad, who spoke with the caller. The stranger on the line said, "I found your dog Biscuit. You can pick him up at the police station."Bryce called Kyle right away, and they got super excited. They rushed to the police station, and there was Biscuit, reclining on a couch like a king! Bryce and Kyle hugged Biscuit and said, “We missed you so much!” Then they took him home and gave him a bubble bath. From that day on, Bryce and Kyle promised never to lose Biscuit again!

Jasmine's days were filled with kindness and laughter, but on this particular evening, something extraordinary was about to unfold. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow across the cobblestone streets, Jasmine decided to take a leisurely walk. The air was crisp, and the fragrance of blooming flowers wafted through the evening breeze. She kissed her mother on the cheek, promising to return before the stars adorned the sky. Unbeknownst to Jasmine, destiny had a peculiar plan for her that evening. As she strolled along a winding path that led to the heart of the enchanted forest, she noticed a glimmer in the bushes. Intrigued, she approached and discovered a small clearing, where a radiant light emanated from a mysterious object lying on the ground. Bending down, Jasmine uncovered a dazzling scepter adorned with intricate patterns and shimmering gemstones. Mesmerized by its beauty, she hesitated for a moment, contemplating whether to take it or leave it be. The scepter seemed to emit a gentle hum, as if whispering secrets only Jasmine could comprehend.

The scepter seemed to emit a gentle hum, as if whispering secrets only Jasmine could comprehend...
In Episode Two of Season 2, Clod and I have a funny, “spirited” discussion about our encounters with psychics, hypnotists, and homemade Ouija boards. Clod tells a wild college tale she'd completely forgotten until she found it in her diary, and I tell some crazy spirit-related tales, too, including one which explains my fear of people named Paul. Sean and B-Scott talk with Texans Insider John McClain about what he'll be watching most intently at Texans training camp, what the matchup between Will Anderson and Kenyon Green may show, and Houston moving to the same conference as his beloved Baylor Bears.
Religion taught us that Jesus was the treasure and we were the merchants that bought the whole field. Now we're learning, through revelation, that Abba is the merchant and we're the treasure that was buried that He paid the price to have. Don't let religion fool you into the thinking of another “price to be paid”. The price has been eternally paid by the one who is mesmerized by us. The Homestead Mobile - June 16th, 2023

You rush to the airlock, blocking those... "things" out side. You feel the concussion of a distant explosion just as the lock seals you off from that hellscape once know as Noth Hollywood. The loud heavy "Klank!" of the steel door is the closest thing to a warm embrace you've experienced since IT happened. As you make your way down the corridor, you notice most of the scratching has stopped since the last blast. Finally. As you approach the door to your room, a faint sound pulls your focus. It's music!? It gets louder then, a voice. You sprint twords the door, pushing it open. It's the old radio? You're puzzled, it hasn't worked since... Your thought is cut off by the sound of a mans voice. A beautiful voice. Mesmerized, you walk backwards towards your cot. Suddenly, you forget about the scratching, your hunger seems to let up a little, you stop thinking about what you just saw, you sit down. A plume of dust jumps in the air but you don't notice, you just sit. You sit and you listen and begin to feel something. You smile. It seems like every other week there's a news report about how coffee will help you live longer or will shorten your life. There are similar reports about vitamins and water consumption and any number of other health-related studies. In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, a look at the slippery problem of separating correlation from causation. You'll hear the fascinating story of Franz Mesmer and the apparently miraculous effects of what he dubbed animal magnetism. Author Mara Rockliff recounts the sway that Mesmer held over the Parisian public and how Benjamin Franklin transformed the scientific method in his quest to find the truth.Mara Rockliff has written several books for young readers, including the multiple award-winning Mesmerized: How Benjamin Franklin Solved a Mystery That Baffled All of France.Next, economics professor John List joins Katy to discuss the reasons why we confuse correlation and causation and explains the best practices for separating the two in the study of charitable giving, early childhood education, business, and policy.John List is the Kenneth C. Griffin Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago and the chief economist at Walmart. Choiceology is an original podcast from Charles Schwab.
