Buckle up for a raucous episode of the Opie Radio podcast, live from the sun-soaked dunes of Long Island! Opie and Ron the Waiter dive headfirst into a fiery debate over a whale-meets-boat disaster in Jersey—was it human stupidity or a sick whale? Things get heated as they roast Governor Kathy Hochul's school cell phone ban, slam Texas' gerrymandering drama, and unravel the mind-blowing plan for a nuclear reactor on the moon. From nostalgic riffs on summer anthems (ACDC vs. Black Keys, anyone?) to side-splitting jabs at Axl Rose's Benny Hill glow-up, this episode is a rollercoaster of laughs, rants, and conspiracies. Plus, a brain teaser about the world's smartest animals that'll leave you stumped! Grab your coffee and join the chaos—Opie and Ron are serving up unfiltered fun that's wilder than a whale's blowhole blast!
On this week's show, we catch up on a smokin' boatload o' new-ish singles and pour one out for the late Ozzy Osbourne. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.

What's the secret to crafting a killer mix? Grammy-winning mix engineer Collin Dupuis joins us to share his insights on mixing techniques, room acoustics, and creative chaos. Known for working with The Black Keys, Lana Del Rey, Angel Olsen, he discusses the evolution of music gear, collaboration, experimentation, clarity in mixing, effective file management, and tools like Soundflow and Samply that streamline workflow. Collin talks about vintage recording equipment, the revival of classic multitrack tapes, and automation in modern mixing. He shares experiences with in-person learning, challenges working with musicians of varying skill levels, techniques for enhancing drum sounds, the importance of headphone mixes for drummers, microphone choices and design, and the historical impact of Stevens tape machines. From live-to-two-track recording to innovative mixing, Collin offers valuable insights into pushing creative boundaries. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Collin Dupuis, a Detroit-based multi-Grammy nominated and two time Grammy winning mixer, producer, and musician working with artists like Yves Tumor, Angel Olsen, Lawrence Rothman, Special Interest, Boy and Bear, and many others. He also plays drums in his band Zoos of Berlin. In 2024, Collin came to my studio to teach a mixing masterclass that was a ton of fun. We had a full studio of dedicated producers and engineers from near and far. We learned a ton about Collin's sophisticated mixing method, including a better understanding of how a mix template can work in your home studio and a deep dive into RX and how it can improve your mixes. Collin has been a guest on the podcast in episodes RSR252, RSR341 and RSR404. I speak with Kentucky recording artist Yovany Pino, aka "Spooky Fox". We talk about how he came up with his performance name. The music he's releasing. He tells me about a dj set he saw the Black Keys at after one of their shows in Nashville. Yeah, I could totally nerd out with Yovany! Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, more commonly known as the Black Keys, stop by the kitchen for some shrimp + grits and crispy chicken skins. We also break down GOOD music and I offer them a gig on my new show they might not be able to say no to. Plus, we breakdown ticket prices for concerts, News Flash: it's not the artists. Place a wire rack on top of the tray and spray the rack very lightly with cooking oil spray Pat dry chicken skins with paper towel and sprinkle them with kosher salt Place chicken skins in a single layer skin side down on your sprayed wire rack Place the tray in the oven and bake for 20 minutes, flipping the chicken skins to skin side up halfway through the cook. NEW ORLEANS STYLE SHRIMP AND GRITS WITH CAVIAR Shrimp Ingredients 1 pound large or jumbo shrimp 16/20 size- peeled and deveined 2 tablespoons blackened seasoning (can be homemade or store brand like Zatarains Blackened Seasoning) 3 tablespoon unsalted butter 2 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil ½ pound spicy pork smoked sausage - diced or sliced thin ½ red bell pepper - fine dice ½ green bell pepper - fine dice 1 small yellow onion - fine dice 3 cloves garlic - crushed or grated 1 cups low-sodium chicken stock 1 cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce Salt and black pepper Cheesy Grits Ingredients 2 ½ cups filtered water 2 cups half and half 1 ½ teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder ¼ - ½ teaspoon cayenne 1 cup old fashioned corn grits 8 ounces freshly grated sharp cheddar 3 ounces freshly grated smoked gouda (optional) 6 tablespoons cultured butter 2 tablespoons creme fraiche Salt and black pepper to taste Garnish Ingredients 1 oz tin caviar Chopped parsley Finely sliced spring onion Add water, half and half, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and cayenne to a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Very slowly pour in the grits to the boiling liquid, stirring quickly as you pour. Lower the heat to medium-low, cover the pot and cook the grits for 25-30 minutes, stirring at least every 5 minutes for an even cook with no lumps. While grits are cooking, toss the shrimp with 1 tablespoon of blackened seasoning in a small mixing bowl and set them aside. Heat the oil and butter in a 10 or 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add the smoked sausage and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until browned. Add the peppers and onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the vegetables soften. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds to a minute. Season the mixture with 1 tablespoon of blackened seasoning and add the chicken stock, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan and bring to a simmer. Add the heavy cream and Worcestershire sauce, lower the heat a little and cook the sauce for 3 to 4 minutes until slightly thickened. Add the shrimp and cook until the shrimp are opaque and the sauce has reduced a bit. This should take about 5 to 7 minutes. Season the sauce with salt and cracked pepper to taste and remove the pan from the heat. Once the grits are thick and creamy, remove them from the heat and stir in cheese, creme fraiche and butter. Season the grits with more salt and cracked black pepper to taste. Serve shrimp and grits immediately by spooning grits, shrimp and sprinkling with parsley and a little spring onion then a generous amount of caviar on top. Following the recent release of her excellent sophomore album, If You Asked For A Picture, Blondshell's Sabrina Teitelbaum joins the LSQ podcast to talk about important musical discoveries along her creative path: Falling in love with the Rolling Stones after her parents took her to see them in concert at Madison Square Garden when she was only seven years old, delving into songwriting a few years later, as a way of coping with obsessive-compulsive disorder, going to as many concerts as she could in NYC as a teenager and seeing bands like the Black Keys, Haim and The Kooks, finding inspiration in the lyrical prowess of Fiona Apple and Frank Ocean, and more. Blondshell is on tour now, and through most of the rest of this year. Get tickets here.
Producer/bassist Jim Reilley will most likely be remembered as a founding member (along with musical partner Reese Campbell) of seminal folk rock band The New Dylans. Founded in 1986,the band barnstormed the US throughout the 90's and won critical praise from Rolling Stone (who called their songs “offbeat classics”) and virtually every other major music publication and major newspaper. The Village Voice placed the band in the top 5 Ep's of 1986 in their prestigious Pazz and Jop Poll. The band won the hearts and minds of many fans in the then burgeoning AAA American radio format and had several feature spots on important tastemaking radio shows including NPR's All Things Considered, Idiot's Delight with Vin Scelsa, Partridge Family Imp Danny Bonaduce's WLUP show, Mountain Stage, WXPN's World Café and Acoustic Café. Today's guest is a family favorite. That means I'm talking with Erika Wennerstrom from Heartless Bastards. There are times when I'm completely blown away that an artist agrees to be a guest on this podcast and this is one of those moments. But Erika was and is incredibly kind and gracious. We start off like we usually do, talking about what got her into music. It turns out that she knew she was going to be a singer by around the age of four. We talk about early bands, like Shesus, the transformation from a shy, awkward person to fronting a band, and how she came up with the name Heartless Bastards. The band's sound has evolved over the course of six albums. Erika talks about struggling with writer's block, stepping back from the band to regroup, and doing her solo album. After a brief tangent on designed obsolescence, Erika pulls the curtain back on the latest Heartless Bastards album, A Beautiful Life. Disney and James Bond were influences to a few songs and Laurel Canyon asserts its influence. Erika is full of great stories, like how Patrick Kearney of The Black Keys ended up with her demos, growing up with The Ohio Players (at least one of them), and swinging by Robert Plant's house to pick him up for drinks (he had shotgun, of course). Erika is currently writing music for the next Heartless Bastards album so keep following their social media accounts and theheartlessbastards.com for updates. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Pick up merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Or just give us money at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. And I hope you're as excited for this one as I was. From country twang to electronic trance, our latest mix takes listeners on a journey through an extraordinary range of musical landscapes. Matt and Sam discover unexpected connections between artists spanning five decades, share their surprised reactions to genre departures, and explain why this collection might be their favorite in years. The hosts dive deep into Eric Church's reflective "Hands of Time," exploring how music keeps us youthful despite life's inevitable forward march. They unpack Wet Leg's relatable lyrics about unwanted advances in "Catch These Fists" and The Kooks' poignant reminder to live fully because "you never know when it's going to stop." The conversation takes a more vulnerable turn with Haim's powerful exploration of panic attacks in "Everybody's Trying to Figure Me Out."A surprising highlight emerges in Finneas and Kacey Musgraves' acoustic duet, where Finneas (of Billie Eilish production fame) showcases his remarkable vocal talents. The hosts marvel at Orbital's collaboration with actress Tilda Swinton on a six-minute meditation that functions simultaneously as relaxation aid and dance track. The musical exploration continues with The Black Keys' soul-influenced sound, Little Feat proving their 50+ year longevity, Arcade Fire's signature building compositions, and Charlotte DeWitte's pure electronic experience. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/sam-april-2025-new-music/pl.u-MBM3INqbr81.
