Today's guest makes me feel blessed because his story illustrates just how fortunate I am. Meet Jon Muq. He's a singer/songwriter from Austin TX via Uganda. Growing up, music was not a presence in his life. But sound was. He grew up without electricity so music was not a priority. But once he discovered music, it became an obsession; particularly the song We Are The World. Jon learned to play guitar on a borrowed acoustic. His first gig was playing in a hotel for food. The first song he ever wrote was for a friend in need. He began posting his music to social media which landed him a gig on Norwegian Cruise Lines. That gig was a huge culture shock. But once his contract was over, he was stuck in the Bahamas. He made his way to Austin and met people who helped him. But because of his visa, he wasn't allowed to perform for three years. Jon tells me how Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys found the videos he was posting and reached out to him. After spending time getting to know each other, they went into the studio. It took a grand total of four days to make Jon's debut, Flying Away. We talk about Jon's approach to writing, his next album, and his theory on perimeters and burritos. Follow Jon on social media @jonmuq. Check out jonmuq.com for more information. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Grab merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Send money through ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Barry and Abigail discuss Navy Blues by Sloan and sample three Canadian beers: Labatt Blue from Labatt Brewing Company, Moosehead Canadian Lager from Moosehead Breweries Limited, and Life in the Clouds from Collective Arts Brewing. The delightful can art of Life in the Clouds was designed by Joe Boyd.Navy Blues was entered into our Jukebox long ago by Paul Zawacki during our episode Bonus: A Dozen Updates (The Procession Reunion Special). He described Sloan as the Canadian Beatles, comparing One Chord to Another to the White Album (we have officially gone zero episodes without mentioning the White Album!) and Navy Blues to Abbey Road.In preparation for this episode, Abigail listened through Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Love by The Beatles.Revolver is one of Barry's favorite Beatles albums. He compared the throat clear at the beginning of She Says What She Means to George Harrison's counting on Taxman, the opening track of Revolver.Barry then compared C'mon C'mon to Good Day Sunshine, also off Revolver.…He then compared Iggy & Angus to The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana) by The Banana Splits.…Then, collectively, they compared Sinking Ships to Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey by Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney.Barry "complained" about the sirens in Money City Maniacs, which reminded Abigail of the sounds of cars whizzing by underlying Lonely Boy by The Black Keys.Abigail had confusion over Seems So Heavy, which by title alone seems to be a rip-off of/tribute to I Want You (She's So Heavy) by The Beatles. Later, she would compare the opening couple of notes of Suppose They Close the Door to the opening couple of notes of I Want You (She's So Heavy).Abigail shared that one of the best meals she ever ate was in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, from where Sloan originated. She ate sea-cuterie at Waterfront Warehouse.Barry compared the piano in Chester the Molester to the piano in Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da by The Beatles. We briefly discussed James Taylor's eponymous debut album, which was released on The Beatles' Apple Records (the first non-British artist on the label), was recorded at Trident Studios concurrently with the White Album, and features Paul McCartney and George Harrison on bass guitar and backing vocals, respectively! But Barry had part of the story backward - Something in the Way She Moves inspired the opening line of Harrison's Something, not the other way around. (Coincidentally, Taylor has said he had meant for the song to be called “I Feel Fine,” but that title had already been taken by The Beatles!) We played a little bit of the version of Carolina In My Mind that appears on this debut album - the version with members of The Beatles included. Later, Abigail mentioned that she kept hearing How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You) by James Taylor in I Wanna Thank You.Our word association around “ways to get even” from Suppose They Close the Door led us to 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover by Paul Simon and 50 Ways to Say Goodbye by Train. We should have also added Ways to Hang On by The Stick Arounds! Our next Jukebox episode will be 2014 Forest Hills Drive by J. Cole, submitted to our Virtual Jukebox by Alinor Mezinord.Up next… Teenage Dream by Katy PerryJingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group

...oder auf Englisch «No Rain, No Flowers». No Rain, No Flowers» hervor.

This week's show featured new music from Wolf Alice, Soft Bait, the Black Keys and more.
Erschienen am 08. August 2025 bei Warner. Unser Review. "„No Rain, No Flowers“ bekommt von mir knappe 3 von 5 Punkte. On this week's show, we catch up on a smokin' boatload o' new-ish singles and pour one out for the late Ozzy Osbourne. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.
On this week's In Service Of, The Black Keys join hosts Steve Baltin and Sage Bava for a wide-ranging conversation on the band's new album, being on the road, collaborations and an insane story of how their music helped fuel the raid that took out Osama Bin Laden. Known for working with The Black Keys, Lana Del Rey, Angel Olsen, he discusses the evolution of music gear, collaboration, experimentation, clarity in mixing, effective file management, and tools like Soundflow and Samply that streamline workflow. Collin talks about vintage recording equipment, the revival of classic multitrack tapes, and automation in modern mixing. He shares experiences with in-person learning, challenges working with musicians of varying skill levels, techniques for enhancing drum sounds, the importance of headphone mixes for drummers, microphone choices and design, and the historical impact of Stevens tape machines. From live-to-two-track recording to innovative mixing, Collin offers valuable insights into pushing creative boundaries. Season the mixture with 1 tablespoon of blackened seasoning and add the chicken stock, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan and bring to a simmer. Add the heavy cream and Worcestershire sauce, lower the heat a little and cook the sauce for 3 to 4 minutes until slightly thickened. Add the shrimp and cook until the shrimp are opaque and the sauce has reduced a bit. This should take about 5 to 7 minutes. Season the sauce with salt and cracked pepper to taste and remove the pan from the heat. Once the grits are thick and creamy, remove them from the heat and stir in cheese, creme fraiche and butter. Season the grits with more salt and cracked black pepper to taste. Serve shrimp and grits immediately by spooning grits, shrimp and sprinkling with parsley and a little spring onion then a generous amount of caviar on top. Following the recent release of her excellent sophomore album, If You Asked For A Picture, Blondshell's Sabrina Teitelbaum joins the LSQ podcast to talk about important musical discoveries along her creative path: Falling in love with the Rolling Stones after her parents took her to see them in concert at Madison Square Garden when she was only seven years old, delving into songwriting a few years later, as a way of coping with obsessive-compulsive disorder, going to as many concerts as she could in NYC as a teenager and seeing bands like the Black Keys, Haim and The Kooks, finding inspiration in the lyrical prowess of Fiona Apple and Frank Ocean, and more. Blondshell is on tour now, and through most of the rest of this year. Get tickets here.

Today's guest is a family favorite. That means I'm talking with Erika Wennerstrom from Heartless Bastards. There are times when I'm completely blown away that an artist agrees to be a guest on this podcast and this is one of those moments. But Erika was and is incredibly kind and gracious. We start off like we usually do, talking about what got her into music. It turns out that she knew she was going to be a singer by around the age of four. We talk about early bands, like Shesus, the transformation from a shy, awkward person to fronting a band, and how she came up with the name Heartless Bastards. The band's sound has evolved over the course of six albums. Erika talks about struggling with writer's block, stepping back from the band to regroup, and doing her solo album. After a brief tangent on designed obsolescence, Erika pulls the curtain back on the latest Heartless Bastards album, A Beautiful Life. Disney and James Bond were influences to a few songs and Laurel Canyon asserts its influence. Erika is full of great stories, like how Patrick Kearney of The Black Keys ended up with her demos, growing up with The Ohio Players (at least one of them), and swinging by Robert Plant's house to pick him up for drinks (he had shotgun, of course). Erika is currently writing music for the next Heartless Bastards album so keep following their social media accounts and theheartlessbastards.com for updates. Follow us @PerformanceAnx.
