The Hill Country Blues is, in effect for many of us, a form of early american music that is hiding in plain site. Take one part, fife and folk from the british isles, another part west african polyrhythms. Mix european balladeering with caribbean hypnotic rhythms. What begins as drum and fife music deep in the hills of northern Mississippi and Alabama blended with other blues from the region then heavily influenced the likes of Rock legends like Bo Diddley. We're re-discovering what Hill Country blues is all about. I'm joined by 2025 Massachusetts beat poet laureate Joshua Michael Stewart. Krolikowski.https://joshuamichaelstewartauthor.com What they say about JMS: There's a fearlessness in Joshua Michael Stewart's poetry—tough, tightly written narratives and monologues about living poor with broken people (some of whom are your closest relatives) in hard times. This heartfelt gritty work reminds me of the hardscrabble accounts of humanity in some of our best poets—the work of Ai, Bruce Weigel, and Linda McCarriston's landmark book, Eva-Marie. Stewart exercises the courage of truth telling and takes the revenge of real poetic craft. As Bruce Weigel says "Say it clearly and you make it beautiful, no matter what." Or as Stewart says, "Poets are the battered spouses of hope." You can't help but respect the maker of these streamlined vehicles, for his guts and his unsentimental, vivid poems. -Tony Hoagland

What happens when the feature isn't just a guest, but the gravitational force that reshapes a song's destiny? This week, we go back to Season 3, and Matt and Sam dive into 12 tracks where the featured artist is bigger than the headliner and map the creative ripple effects—from credibility boosts and audience crossovers to subtle vocal weaves that change how a story is told. It's a tour through hip-hop, rock, alt-pop, Latin hits, Afrobeats, and EDM, spotlighting the different ways a feature can blend, dominate, or transform. We start with Blackstreet's No Diggity and Dr. Dre's stamp of authority, then jump to Gorillaz and Bad Bunny's Tormenta where the guest becomes the lead energy. Bruce Springsteen's appearance on Bleachers' Chinatown shows how a legend can enhance without overshadowing. The Black Keys and ZZ Top's Billy F. Gibbons fuse blues weight with modern grit, while Big Sean's No Favors taps Eminem's verbal whirlwind to re-center the track. The Pretty Reckless bring Tom Morello for a late-song solo that explodes the arrangement, and The National's The Alcott with Taylor Swift is a masterclass in narrative duet balance. We revisit two global juggernauts—Despacito's crossover with Justin Bieber and the time-capsule case of Old Town Road featuring Billy Ray Cyrus—to show how co-signs can bridge genres and break charts. Dominic Fike's collaboration with Weezer reframes alt DNA, Burna Boy's Monsters You Made with Chris Martin pairs stadium warmth with sharp political commentary, and Flume's Tiny Cities with Beck turns bright production into bittersweet reflection. Along the way, we explore questions of authorship, credit, and why certain features open doors to entire scenes.1. No Diggity (feat. Dr Dre & Queen Pen) by Blackstreet2. Tormenta (feat. Send us a textOn this week's episode of Grease the Wheels, Uncle Jimmy takes to task a newsfeed article that stumbled across his unnamed homepage (it was probably AOL) regarding the common warning lights in cars and what they mean — according to someone who has never worked on a car. These ones are always fun, from the teapot of doom and the drunk robot, to more obscure and abstract examples — people really have no idea how their cars work and when the car tries to tell them something this is compounded. The real takeaway that is missed by the vast majority of the points in this article is that when your car is telling you something, you are more than likely to need professional help when it comes to making that light turn off. Some lights are more dire than others, and some can just make it more likely that either your car or yourself might die! What are your favorite customer names for idiot lights, let us know over at the Facebook page.

Today's guest makes me feel blessed because his story illustrates just how fortunate I am. Meet Jon Muq. He's a singer/songwriter from Austin TX via Uganda. Growing up, music was not a presence in his life. But sound was. He grew up without electricity so music was not a priority. But once he discovered music, it became an obsession; particularly the song We Are The World. Jon learned to play guitar on a borrowed acoustic. His first gig was playing in a hotel for food. The first song he ever wrote was for a friend in need. He began posting his music to social media which landed him a gig on Norwegian Cruise Lines. That gig was a huge culture shock. But once his contract was over, he was stuck in the Bahamas. He made his way to Austin and met people who helped him. But because of his visa, he wasn't allowed to perform for three years. Jon tells me how Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys found the videos he was posting and reached out to him. After spending time getting to know each other, they went into the studio. It took a grand total of four days to make Jon's debut, Flying Away. We talk about Jon's approach to writing, his next album, and his theory on perimeters and burritos. Follow Jon on social media @jonmuq. Check out jonmuq.com for more information. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Grab merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Send money through ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Barry and Abigail discuss Navy Blues by Sloan and sample three Canadian beers: Labatt Blue from Labatt Brewing Company, Moosehead Canadian Lager from Moosehead Breweries Limited, and Life in the Clouds from Collective Arts Brewing. The delightful can art of Life in the Clouds was designed by Joe Boyd.Navy Blues was entered into our Jukebox long ago by Paul Zawacki during our episode Bonus: A Dozen Updates (The Procession Reunion Special). He described Sloan as the Canadian Beatles, comparing One Chord to Another to the White Album (we have officially gone zero episodes without mentioning the White Album!) and Navy Blues to Abbey Road.In preparation for this episode, Abigail listened through Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Love by The Beatles.Revolver is one of Barry's favorite Beatles albums. He compared the throat clear at the beginning of She Says What She Means to George Harrison's counting on Taxman, the opening track of Revolver.Barry then compared C'mon C'mon to Good Day Sunshine, also off Revolver.…He then compared Iggy & Angus to The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana) by The Banana Splits.…Then, collectively, they compared Sinking Ships to Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey by Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney.Barry "complained" about the sirens in Money City Maniacs, which reminded Abigail of the sounds of cars whizzing by underlying Lonely Boy by The Black Keys.Abigail had confusion over Seems So Heavy, which by title alone seems to be a rip-off of/tribute to I Want You (She's So Heavy) by The Beatles. Later, she would compare the opening couple of notes of Suppose They Close the Door to the opening couple of notes of I Want You (She's So Heavy).Abigail shared that one of the best meals she ever ate was in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, from where Sloan originated. She ate sea-cuterie at Waterfront Warehouse.Barry compared the piano in Chester the Molester to the piano in Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da by The Beatles. We briefly discussed James Taylor's eponymous debut album, which was released on The Beatles' Apple Records (the first non-British artist on the label), was recorded at Trident Studios concurrently with the White Album, and features Paul McCartney and George Harrison on bass guitar and backing vocals, respectively! But Barry had part of the story backward - Something in the Way She Moves inspired the opening line of Harrison's Something, not the other way around. (Coincidentally, Taylor has said he had meant for the song to be called “I Feel Fine,” but that title had already been taken by The Beatles!) We played a little bit of the version of Carolina In My Mind that appears on this debut album - the version with members of The Beatles included. Later, Abigail mentioned that she kept hearing How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You) by James Taylor in I Wanna Thank You.Our word association around “ways to get even” from Suppose They Close the Door led us to 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover by Paul Simon and 50 Ways to Say Goodbye by Train. We should have also added Ways to Hang On by The Stick Arounds! Our next Jukebox episode will be 2014 Forest Hills Drive by J. Cole, submitted to our Virtual Jukebox by Alinor Mezinord.Up next… Teenage Dream by Katy PerryJingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group

...oder auf Englisch «No Rain, No Flowers». No Rain, No Flowers» hervor.
Lo nuevo de Deftones,Hailstorm,Good Charlote y The Black Keys.
Following closely on the heels of their last album, "No Rain, No Flowers" finds them stretching out and experimenting while not losing the gritty blues rock of their past albums.

The Black Keys made headlines in 2024 when they cancelled their tour. Then they split with their management. But instead of taking a break, the duo recorded their latest album, No Rain, No Flowers.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

On this week's show, we catch up on a smokin' boatload o' new-ish singles and pour one out for the late Ozzy Osbourne. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.
On this week's In Service Of, The Black Keys join hosts Steve Baltin and Sage Bava for a wide-ranging conversation on the band's new album, being on the road, collaborations and an insane story of how their music helped fuel the raid that took out Osama Bin Laden. NEW ORLEANS STYLE SHRIMP AND GRITS WITH CAVIAR Shrimp Ingredients 1 pound large or jumbo shrimp 16/20 size- peeled and deveined 2 tablespoons blackened seasoning (can be homemade or store brand like Zatarains Blackened Seasoning) 3 tablespoon unsalted butter 2 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil ½ pound spicy pork smoked sausage - diced or sliced thin ½ red bell pepper - fine dice ½ green bell pepper - fine dice 1 small yellow onion - fine dice 3 cloves garlic - crushed or grated 1 cups low-sodium chicken stock 1 cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce Salt and black pepper Cheesy Grits Ingredients 2 ½ cups filtered water 2 cups half and half 1 ½ teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder ¼ - ½ teaspoon cayenne 1 cup old fashioned corn grits 8 ounces freshly grated sharp cheddar 3 ounces freshly grated smoked gouda (optional) 6 tablespoons cultured butter 2 tablespoons creme fraiche Salt and black pepper to taste Garnish Ingredients 1 oz tin caviar Chopped parsley Finely sliced spring onion Add water, half and half, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and cayenne to a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Very slowly pour in the grits to the boiling liquid, stirring quickly as you pour. Lower the heat to medium-low, cover the pot and cook the grits for 25-30 minutes, stirring at least every 5 minutes for an even cook with no lumps. While grits are cooking, toss the shrimp with 1 tablespoon of blackened seasoning in a small mixing bowl and set them aside. Heat the oil and butter in a 10 or 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add the smoked sausage and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until browned. Add the peppers and onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the vegetables soften. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds to a minute. Season the mixture with 1 tablespoon of blackened seasoning and add the chicken stock, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan and bring to a simmer. Add the heavy cream and Worcestershire sauce, lower the heat a little and cook the sauce for 3 to 4 minutes until slightly thickened. Add the shrimp and cook until the shrimp are opaque and the sauce has reduced a bit. This should take about 5 to 7 minutes. Season the sauce with salt and cracked pepper to taste and remove the pan from the heat. Once the grits are thick and creamy, remove them from the heat and stir in cheese, creme fraiche and butter. Season the grits with more salt and cracked black pepper to taste. Serve shrimp and grits immediately by spooning grits, shrimp and sprinkling with parsley and a little spring onion then a generous amount of caviar on top.
