Fools Fest is KCSU's annual punk festival, always set to happen around April Fools Day! Every year, KCSU gathers local punk and punk-adjacent bands to play on Colorado State University's campus, creating a unique and exciting event for all to enjoy. KCSU's music directors, Mia Templien and Ria Janapati, had the opportunity to sit down with a few of the bands performing for some in-depth interviews.Slag got their name from an unhoused man repeating the word "slag" as he walked by Clay Childress at The Atrium; after having a conversation with him, Childress decided it was fate. This spacey/shoe gaze/noise rock/indie band consists of twins Clay and Coleman. Childress, Caleb Shaver, and Andrew Jussila. Much of their inspiration comes from the DIY scene, with bands like Duster, Fugazi, and Built To Spill being some of their favorites. Slag's next show will be at the FoCoMX music festival at the Art Lab at 8pm on 4/19.

The latest incarnation of Built to Spill will undoubtedly be remembered as one of that band's most potent lineups in its 30+ year career. Teresa Esguerra's heavy groove and lyrical rhythmic conception are a crucial part of the equation. She tells Joe about Prism Bitch, Built to Spill, and her career as an occupational therapist.

Is country wrestling? Maybe!!!!!!! Here is the show notes created by Headliner's Eddy: ---------------------------------------------------------------- Skylar from Huachuca Aerostat joins Kristy for a fascinating discussion on the intricacies of songwriting, from finding inspiration in difficult transitions to honing the blend of synth, guitar, and autotune. With mentions of Built to Spill, melodyne pitch correction, and relating to albums in unlikely ways, their conversation delves deep into the creative process.
Brett Netson is a guitarist, singer and song-writer from Boise, Idaho. He has toured and recorded extensively with Built To Spill, Mark Lanegan, Earth and is a founding member of Caustic Resin. His most recent contribution is a re-imagined version of Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine by Earth, and is out now on special "low frequency" re-release of the classic Earth 2 record on Sub Pop Records. In this episode, the longtime friends and forever ago bandmates discuss the state of "work", why Brett quit playing music for a short period of time, and what brought him back. Brett shares his thoughts on the healthy benefits of Drone music, how it enhances his life and why singular thought is beneficial. We learn what is the glue that binds Brett and Dylan Carlson's musical relationship, why Brett found himself having to choose between not ONE but TWO deals with the devil and he explains the process of tearing apart and rebuilding an Earth song on his own. Brett and Joe make fun of themselves and we hear a few magnificent tunes. The sound of what we've come to know as "emo" from the insane popularity of bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and Panic! At The Disco in the 2000s differs pretty wildly from the sound of the bands that spawned the genre. 90s emo is a particular brand of emo - much more moody, more lo-fi, more rooted in punk, hardcore, new wave, and bands like Fugazi. In large part thanks to Nirvana, little scenes began popping up all over small town America throughout the 90s, and seemingly random outcroppings like Boise, ID Mesa, AZ, Kansas City, MO and Milwaukee, WI became hotbeds of guitar driven heart-on-sleeve bands made up of kids getting in touch with their emotions while bashing out some cathartic rock n roll. You didn't have to be there, but it helps and this week's guest was right in the thick of it back in the day as was your humble host. Before getting to the serious business of handing out their mid-year Indiecasties awards for indie music semi-excellence, Steven and Ian try to make sense of the most nonsensical TikTok trend of 2023: The Pinegrove Shuffle. Listen to two guys in their 40s try to explain it.In non-TikTok news, Steven is planning a trip to Dayton in September for two 40th anniversary Guided By Voices shows that also feature Dinosaur Jr., Built To Spill, Wednesday, and others. It's hard to decide which indie album released in 1997 was the best since there are so many great ones to choose from. There's Elliot Smith's Either/Or, Yo La Tengo's I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One, and Built To Spill's Perfect From Now On. But this week on Indiecast, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen are looking back on 25 years of an album that meant a lot to both of them at the time: Modest Mouse's The Lonesome Crowded West (41:28). They reflect on that era of indie music and decide if Modest Mouse is underrated, overrated, or properly rated at this point. In terms of indie news this week, Indiecast would be remiss if they didn't discuss the Grammy nominations this week (2:51). Plus, Steven and Ian talk about the Taylor Swift/Tickemaster bungle (12:08) and give a thoughtful tribute to Low's Mimi Parker (26:43), who sadly passed away earlier this month. In this week's Recommendation Corner (52:47), Ian gives a shout out to Japanese emo band Injury Tape, whose debut album came out earlier this year. Meanwhile, Steven suggests listeners should check out Guma, whose album A List Of Sightings dropped in February and has been compared to Steely Dan and '70s soft rock.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. As I said last week. this is another month where there is so much great new music that it couldn’t be contained to one new release episode. So this is part two of this month’s series, and it’s dominated by veteran artists. Pixies, Off!, Cockney Rejects, Built To Spill, Buzzcocks, and a trio of Irish rock and roll bands (The Mahones, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly). But there are also plenty of newer acts, including the glorious power pop of Uni Boys and 2nd Grade, along with noisier fare from the likes of Kate Clover, Pretty Sick, and Suzi Moon. I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion! For more information, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

There's something poetic about the fact Built To Spill and The Afghan Whigs dropped an album on the same day. The bands may have been diametrically opposed in the '90s, but because they peaked around the same time and have now become a staple for Gen X indie heads, the two groups oftentimes get put in the same category. On this week's Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen put both bands' legacy into perspective while discussing Built To Spill's When The Wind Forgets Your Name (18:39) and The Afghan Whigs' How Do You Burn? (36:57)The biggest music news of this week came from Harry Styles and the absolute chaos that is his new film, Don't Worry Darling (:55). The film's premiere saw cringey interview quotes, Florence Pugh being a wild card, and a (debunked) rumor that Styles spit on his co-star Chris Pine. Plus, a fan mailbag question had Steven and Ian finally addressing which one of them is guilty of having a squeaky chair (7:26).In this week's Recommendation Corner (52:39), Ian endorsed Phoenix band Holy Fawn, whose new album Dimensional Bleed is out today. Meanwhile, Steven shouted out Bitchin Bajas' new album Bajascillators, which sounds like Philip Glass meets the Grateful Dead. New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. He has collaborated with visual artist/musician Chris Johanson on soundtracks to art installations (Ensemble IS) & scored several films by Portland based underground filmmaker Vanessa Renwick. SC has toured internationally as a solo artist, first under the name Blues Goblins, & later under his more mundane given name. Oddly, SC is a two time member or the Oregon Music Hall of Fame (it exists), as a member of Quasi & also as a member of Heatmiser. All production by Cody Maxwell. Artwork by Cody Maxwell. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a couple of fantastic songwriters from the indie-rock world: Kenny Becker and Doug Martsch. Martsch I'm guessing our listeners will know as the chief songwriter and sole consistent member of Built to Spill, the band that made Boise, Idaho famous. Built to Spill has been an ongoing concern since the early 1990s, releasing a ton of great albums at a fairly leisurely pace, including stone classics like There's Nothing Wrong With Love and Keep it Like a Secret. The Built to Spill lineup has mutated a bunch of times over the years, and that's never been more true than for the genesis of their latest album, When the Wind Forgets Your Name. Writing and recording the album was done with members of the Brazilian band Orua, but the latest live lineup features Martsch alongside a pair of incredibly talented young women from up-and-coming bands: Prism Bitch's Teresa Esguerra and Blood Lemon's Melanie Radford. They bring a new energy to this storied band. Check out the hilarious video for “Fool's Gold” from When the Wind Forgets Your Name. Goon has a much shorter history than Built to Spill, having really started as Kenny Becker's solo project around 2015. Along with some college friends, Becker recorded Goon's dreamy debut album Heaven is Humming. But that lineup was slowly lost to attrition and now, like Martsch, Becker has an entirely new set of players alongside a brand new album, Hour of Green Evening. This new one was recorded in a more bandlike setting, as you'll hear in this chat, and Becker even had some help from Alex Fischel of Spoon. Check out the sweet and tender “Emily Says” from that new record. In this chat, Becker and Martsch talk about recording in a studio versus recording at home; they talk about finding those eureka moments in the studio, Built to Spill's recent cover of a Cate Le Bon song, and getting musical ideas from TikTok. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Doug Martsch and Kenny Becker for chatting. For the second collection of highlights from the Scherler Sundays 2022 concert and interview series, we have a document from an indie rock lover's dream: Doug Martsch of Built to Spill and John Atkins of 764-HERO, and more recently, his new band Sun Breaks. Doug and John each play intimate acoustic sets behind the old Carnegie Library in Olympia. For this show, I interviewed the two of them together since they have a bit of mutual history in their formative years in their respective music careers- you'll hear about that in a bit. I'm including about 20 minutes from each performance on today's show, and it was really difficult to choose which songs. Doug had a terrific selection of familiar cover tunes, including songs by Cat Stevens and Mazzy Star that aren't included here. If you want to hear the complete, unedited show you can find a link to that at patreon.com/lowprofile.Doug Martsch is best known as the man behind Built To Spill, Boise's undisputed kings of indie rock since the early 1990s, Treepeople before that, and a solo album called “Now You Know” released 20 years ago. Built to Spill also toured as the late Daniel Johnson's backup band, and shortly thereafter released the album "Built to Spill Plays the Songs of Daniel Johnson" in 2020. But my first exposure to his music was through his band with Olympia's Calvin Johnson on K Records, The Halo Benders. His wry lyrics and virtuosity on the guitar have made a life-long fan out of me from day one.Three Magnets Brewing Company, this season's collaborator, has also released several beers inspired by Built to Spill albums/songs, and were absolutely thrilled when Doug agreed to perform at Scherler Sundays! Built To Spill has a new album, When the Wind Forgets Your Name, out this Fall. He plays a tune from it here, along with some other BTS favorites and a few surprising cover tunes.John Atkins' band 764-HERO toured with Built to Spill in the early 1990s when they were label mates on Up! Records, and this commonality inspired the idea to interview Doug and John together for this show. John's music is cemented in the minds of indie fans in the Northwest and beyond. Following 764-HERO, the ever-evolving Atkins' other projects Hush Harbor, and currently, Sun Breaks, have continued to create emotionally charged, contemplative records. Today, you'll hear some favorite tunes from across the past few decades in John's catalog. This episode was recorded and engineered by Robin Carmosino behind the historic Carnegie Library in Olympia, WA on June 26th, 2022.

New music from Kurt Vile (aka "the dude"), Cola, some early '70s Brit psych/rock and more! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thebottomforty/support
Despite his prolific releases, Kurt Vile has oftentimes been pinned with a slacker reputation. Maybe it's his "chill dude" persona or his wandering ballads, but on Vile's latest album Watch My Moves, the former War On Drugs guitarist proves his music has evolved over the last few years. On the latest episode of Indiecast, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen share their thoughts about Watch My Moves (35:12), Vile's latest effort since 2018.This week in indie music also saw some great new releases and some Twitter faux pas. The Conor Oberst/Phoebe Bridgers supergroup Better Oblivion Community Center sent a very snarky tweet at musician Kississippi, calling her music "boring" in response to a very mild joke about Oberst's shoes. Steven and Ian discuss the blowback (6:18) and reminisce on times they learned the hard way that everything on the internet is permanent. Indiecast also delves into Built To Spill's latest album When The Wind Forgets Your Name (1:48), the return of 100 Gecs, and wonder if the hyperpop duo sound a little too 2019 at this point (14:07).In this week's Recommendation Corner (48:09), Ian shows love to Prince Daddy & The Hyena, whose self-titled album is out today. Meanwhile, Steven spotlights Wet Tuna's third studio album Warping All By Yourself, which veers into '70s funk and jazz fusion territory.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. AJ Moser is the biggest Arcade Fire fan we know, and in this episode of CrossFade, he got to make the case for “Funeral” being one of the greatest indie rock records of the 21st century. Matt returned the favor with the esteemed, accessible Built to Spill record “Keep It Like a Secret,” which has the spirit and energy of jam band music but in a tight, catchy, interesting package. In this episode, we talk about Arcade Fire's reputation and career, what makes Built to Spill such fun, and grapple with the legacy of a debut record that got so much attention on release.
