When I first developed an interest in rough-around-the-edges cumbia music, a friend (thanks Matt!) introduced me to the music of Dick El Demasiado, purveyor of “cumbias lunaticas.” Over the years I've managed to glean a bit more about him, then I recently saw a documentary about him called Dick Verdult: It Is True, But Not Here. I learned Dick El Demasiado the musician is a mere sliver of what Dick Verdult the artist has to offer. His culture-jamming tendencies are a reflection of his culturally scattered upbringing- born in the Netherlands, raised all over Europe and South America, and currently living in the Spanish town of Calanda. When Arrington de Dionyso and I spoke to him last November, he was at home in Spain. Dick discusses the music that spoke to him in his youth, moving 20 times in his first 20 years, writing ugly poetry, creating music alone vs with a group, having an audience in a notorious street gang, that signature skeleton costume, and his definition of cultural distortion. Gratitude to Jack Habegger for all the the portraits you've seen this season! Such strong work. Want to hear the show more often? Be a part of the movement! Whenever I have enough money to cover a full work day sourced from supporters like you [at Patreon.com/lowprofile ] I will work on a new episode. I am currently taping season 10 for release in 2025, but in the meantime I have some fun stuff on the table- unpublished interviews with Gastr Del Sol, Elf Power, Dollar Country host Franklin Fantini and DJ Screw biographer Lance Scott Walker, plus live episodes from Scherler Sundays 2024 with interviews and performances from Chris Cohen, Mirah, Michael Hurley, Danbert Nobacon of Chumbawamba, Little Wings, Jonny Kosmo, Lori Goldston and Oh, Rose. If your want to listen to more oral history from some pretty radical musicians, scope olympiamusichistory.org and dig around. I'm the audio editor and there are over 30 hours of interviews currently available on the website. We're in the middle of recording new interviews, so expect another 10 or so interviews early this summer! Scherler Sundays is returning to downtown Olympia, WA every Sunday in July and August at 3pm. See a curated afternoon of bands and solo artists, plus live interview tapings for Low Profile. Catch artists you've heard on this show- Swamp Dogg, Stephen Steinbrink, Soul-Junk, and LAKE- plus other incredible acts like Pearl and The Oysters, Wut, Afrocop, Winehouse, Sunbathe, plus an extended throwback showcase curated by the Olympia Music History Project, and the return of Michael Hurley! Jorma Starratt grew up in Athens, GA, spending his early years immersed in the vibrant music scene at the legendary 40 Watt Club by the age of 10. His father, Ken Starratt, was a member of the iconic band The Squalls. It was through these experiences Jorma was on the cusp of something truly groundbreaking. Athens was producing bands such as R.E.M, The B'52's, Pylon, Elf Power, Of Montreal, Five Eight, Wide Spread Panic, Drive by Truckers and so many more. Once he finished high school, it was inevitable he would take his upbringing straight into the music scene He put together the band Prozak, which became very popular and reached impressive heights. Unfortunately, some of the band members chose different paths, and the band eventually dissolved. As the old adage says, when one door closes, one door opens. Into that door comes an exciting new direction for Jorma. Flag pole writes, "In the early aughts, outsiders viewed the Classic City as the home of redneck rap, thanks to Bubba Sparxxx scoring a 2001 MTV hit with “Ugly.” In 2003, Herb and Skills set the record straight. Under the direction of producers Jorma Starratt and Hano Leathers, rappers Bird, Ishues, Jawz of Life, Fort Knox and more laid down stone-cold classics with a Wu-Tang sword style. For proof, look no further than Ishues' razor-sharp verses on “The Saga Continues.” It's forgotten history now, but press play on Spotify and the lyrical depth, full-bodied production and cinematic samples weave together a disarmingly profound time capsule from a sophisticated era of Southern hip hop.Jorma talks to me about these exciting days, going out to L.A. and how he wishes he could go back to some of those times again. Who knows......maybe he will. Elf Power is an indie rock band from Athens, Georgia, known for its blend of psychedelic, folk, and dreamy rock sounds. They got started in the mid-90s and quickly became part of the “Elephant 6 Collective,” a group of bands like Neutral Milk Hotel and The Apples in Stereo who created unique, experimental music.I had sold a lot of Elf Power's music in the record stores I worked. I had not listened to them in quite some time. I had forgotten how their music is often dreamy and mysterious, full of quirky lyrics and catchy tunes. Seeing them several times now since I began this podcast has opened up a new and more educated listening for me. Their songs explore themes like nature, dreams, and the surreal, and their albums are like journeys into different worlds. With frontman Andrew Rieger's distinct voice and poetic lyrics, Elf Power has a sound that's both gentle and powerful. Being able to talk to Andrew of Elf Power was not only a history lesson beginning with Andrew's recording solo 4 track cassettes, to recording in studios with some of the top producers in the industry. This resulted in their discography capturing a mix of haunting melodies, thought-provoking lyrics, and a musical style that's earthy yet otherworldly. I was so happy to see them live, and I am still rekindling my love of this band. This talk with Andrew was perfect as I listened to some of Andrew's thoughts that creeped into the side of quirky meets surreal. I hope you have a great auditory experience listening to Andrew Rieger.Show AthCastMusic (©): The Music of Athens Georgia, Now and Then.SEASON: 3 Episode 34Length: 39:23PUBLISHED:Updated Weekly on ThursdayEngineer: Kayla DoverIntern: Kati Putman (UGA Music School)Recorded at Tweed Recording Audio Production Schoolhttps://tweedrecording.comCONTACT FOR ATHCASTMUSIC:marlene@athcastmusic.cominstagram: AthCastMusicFaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550294283019INSTAGRAM: ELFPOWERBANDFACEBOOK: https:/facebook.com/elfpowerWebsite: elfpower.comBAND CAMP: bit.ly/4flHImAOR https://elfpower,bandcamp.com

We'll be talking about his new documentary about the band Earth, and his new Your Heart Breaks album “The Wrack Line” out now on Kill Rock Stars records.  Finally, a set from our friends Elf Power, who drove out west from Athens, GA to play a show in the rain.  Vocalist/guitarist Andrew Rieger catches up with Markly at the end of it all.

Active sincew the mid-aughties, he continues his long-term project writing songs that reflect his personal take on every day Monday in interactions with nature, society, music, and probably business. Generifus has a new album out called Rearrangel- it came out a week ago as of the release of this episode. Spencer joins me today along with band mates Andrew and Wilson in the live studio at KAOS in Olympia. They're performing a handful of new songs, and we also had a surprise visitor who brought some pizza. We talk about where this virus came from, where all viruses may come from, and we also tackle topics related to 'parachute science', the scientific method and its limitations, and whether or not I am a generally ignorant person. Bacteria and many fungi may be invisible to the naked eye but their impact is all around us and is especially important when it comes to food. He lays out the rough path ahead for human society when it comes to reworking some of our most prevalent structures (e.g., capitalism, globalism, the non-local nature of food production) but leaves us with a message of hope. In 2008, he released The Singing Saw at Christmastime, and part of the conceit is that the saws actually do the singing. He's not playing the saws; he's encouraging them to sing. That element of whimsy is part of the fun of Koster's projects and our conversation, though he brought engineer Nesey Gallons on the call with him to be a lifeline when Koster starts to drift too far out.  Our conversation covers some ground, from an unexpected appearance by Leadbelly to a Christmas interlude courtesy of Japanese filmmaker Akira  Kurosawa. Koster and Gallons also turned me on to a Folksways compilation of Ukrainian Christmas songs. The song we hear is "The Miracle of the Birth."

We're joined by Andrew Rieger, the singer and songwriter behind Athens, Georgia's Elf Power, a key player in the legendary Elephant 6 Collective, and the founder of Orange Twin Records. Crucial matters discussed include: surviving a tour with the hard drinking Robert Pollard and his band Guided by Voices; the many phases of the fertile Athens, Georgia underground rock scene; our jealousy over the incredible coolness of Andrew's parents (he had a half-pipe in his backyard); the incredible story behind Orange Twin's release of the instant classic record, Colour Green, by Sibylle Baier; and much more.

'60s matchup for this episode: (1) The Beatles "Revolver" vs. (7) Van Morrison "Astral Weeks" '70s matchup for this episode: (3) Pink Floyd "The Wall" vs. (9) Bruce Springsteen "Born To Run" '80s matchup for this episode: (7) U2 "The Joshua Tree" vs. (9) Guns n' Roses "Appetite For Destruction" '90s matchup for this episode (1) Radiohead "OK Computer" vs. (2) Neutral Milk Hotel "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" Notes for this episode: Moondance is also a brilliant Van Morrison album, but we didn't mention it because it's a very different thing than Astral Weeks. For the record, we didn't party to GNR every night in college, just Thursday through Saturday! RIP Marvelous Marvin Hagler, a true champion. Neutral Milk Hotel are part of the Elephant 6 musical collective, which also includes the Apples in Stereo, Circulatory System, Elf Power, Of Montreal, and Olivia Tremor Control, among others. So, although NMH are very singluar, if you do like them you might want to try out some of these other bands as well. On today's show, I talk to musician Will Cullen Hart. Will grew up all over the US, but it was living in Louisiana that truly made him who he is, because that's where he met Bill Doss, Jeff Mangum and Robert Schneider and formed the Elephant Six Recording Company, as well as The Olivia Tremor Control with Doss. It's not hyperbole to say that the bands that were part of Elephant Six: Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples in Stereo, the aforementioned OTC, as well as other bands like Of Montreal, Beulah and Elf Power came to define a generation of music-listeners. After OTC broke up, Will formed psyche-pop band The Circulatory System, and while it was revealed in 2008 that he suffers from multiple sclerosis, this has not slowed him down - his latest album Mosaics Within Mosaics was released earlier this year, and it is wonderful. Hello Beastsiders!!  Today's episode is a grand return to our ongoing theme show series, THEMATIC For The People.  The theme here is music from the Street Fighter video game series by CAPCOM.  At the beginning of each set, you'll hear a remix of an SF composition---a lot of them covered in an interesting new musical style.  These fanmade remixes do great tribute to the originals, and take the works in fantastic new directions. Follwing the remix tunes are original Beastly tunes (linked by genre similarity in each set) to make a fun, organic blend of music.  Links for the artists are in the tracklist, and check out their wonderful work! Attention, Athens, Georgia!  The weekend of March 19-22 will mark the 2nd annual Sling Shot Festival. Sling Shot's spread is all over the downtown Classic City district, with many venues featuring music artists (such as Kishi Bashi and local favorites Elf Power), stand-up comedians (Doug Benson of "Super High Me" and "Last Comic Standing" fame, Jonah Ray--who's been behind the scene on The Andy Milonakis show and featured on The Sarah Silverman Program, and Atlanta's own Josh Harris), technology/new media showcases, and fantabulous exhibitions of art.   Of Beastly interest is the Saturday (3/21) event at New Earth Music Hall.  That evening will be the site of the touchdown of the nationwide Japan Nite 2014 tour, featuring a fresh crew of musicians! Headliners are the ever-entertaining Peelander-Z, and also providing awesome sounds are Jungles (of Bacteria Vacuum), Zargani$, Vampillia, and HAPPY.  You'll hear more about the JN show in this episode.  Check www.japan-nite.com for times and dates, and locations near you for the upcoming shows. You'll hear the Polite one talk fanboy, giving you the lowdown on 2 fine comic book shop in the Athens/Watkinsville areas (Bizarro Wuxtry and Mr. Comic Shop), and mention a great site to find comic book stores in your area. If you're a DC Comics/Justice League fan, pop open a side link for the fantastic and Lego-tastic fan production, "Justice League: Gods Among Us" by the marvelous OUTBACKPRIME PRODUCTIONS.  More on the project in this ep. Below is the tracklist for this episode, with links to the artists' sites/social media where highlighted.   Beasts will now be running an episode EVERY OTHER MONTH, and we thank you for keeping up with us. More interviews and videos will be up in the meantime.
