From the New York Times best-selling author of Stiff and Fuzz, a rollicking exploration of the quest to re-create the impossible complexities of human anatomy. The body is the most complex machine in the world, and the only one for which you cannot get a replacement part from the manufacturer. For centuries, medicine has reached for what's available—sculpting noses from brass, borrowing skin from frogs and hearts from pigs, crafting eye parts from jet canopies and breasts from petroleum by-products. Today we're attempting to grow body parts from scratch using stem cells and 3D printers. How are we doing? Are we there yet?In Replaceable You, Mary Roach explores the remarkable advances and difficult questions prompted by the human body's failings. When and how does a person decide they'd be better off with a prosthetic than their existing limb? Can a donated heart be made to beat forever? Can an intestine provide a workable substitute for a vagina?Roach dives in with her characteristic verve and infectious wit. Her travels take her to the OR at a legendary burn unit in Boston, a “superclean” xeno-pigsty in China, and a stem cell “hair nursery” in the San Diego tech hub. She talks with researchers and surgeons, amputees and ostomates, printers of kidneys and designers of wearable organs. She spends time in a working iron lung from the 1950s, stays up all night with recovery techs as they disassemble and reassemble a tissue donor, and travels across Mongolia with the cataract surgeons of Orbis International.Irrepressible and accessible, Replaceable You immerses readers in the wondrous, improbable, and surreal quest to build a new you.ABOUT THE AUTHORMary Roach is the author of seven best-selling works of nonfiction, including Grunt, Stiff, and, most recently, Fuzz. Her writing has appeared in National Geographic and the New York Times Magazine, among other publications.Buy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://wellingtonsquarebooks.com/book/9781324050629

What the heck is Keith Richards doing on the Rolling Stones' "Empty Heart"? If you know him, ask him. The tune is a down n dirty bluesy number from the band's early days and even Ian Stewart gets in on the action. Thee Midniters did a groovy rendition in '65 - but are the happy horns too much? Later that same year The First Four covered the tune and hoo-boy! is it garagey!! Totally rockin' - and we rename the whole band to fit their sound ... Prepare for FUZZ! when Florida's The Mods get their clean hands on the song. The lead singer has some lung power! The Wallflower Complexion had three guitarists and two of 'em are noodlin' all over their version, but all you need is that string-slingin' rhythm guitarist ... The Laughing Kind put out a weird take on the song that kinda sounds like The Hombres and features FUZZ Organ!! No stick!!

"Required reading for anyone with a head."—Mary Roach, New York Times bestselling author of Stiff and Fuzz"Absorbing, incisive. . . Zeller captures the profound human and scientific costs of medicine's neglect of these common conditions that affect millions of people—especially women—and points the way toward a more hopeful future."—Maya Dusenbery, author of Doing HarmFrom blinding migraines to severe headache disorders known as “clusters,” chronic head pain affects 40% of the population, many of them suffering in silence. Finally, The Headache reveals the science behind a group of disorders that is as much a curse as a cultural punchline, and leads to key insights into the nature of pain itself.Guided by his own decades-long struggle with cluster headaches, veteran science journalist Tom Zeller Jr.'s journey into headache science is at once intimate and panoramic. He visits cutting-edge clinics; interviews dozens of doctors, neurologists, and fellow headache patients; participates in clinical trials for multi-million-dollar new medicines; and even experiments with psilocybin in search of relief.Website: https://brandyschillace.com/peculiar/Newsletter: http://eepurl.com/ixJJ2YPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/PeculiarBookClub/membershipYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@PeculiarBookClub/streamsBluesky: @peculiarbookclub.bsky.socialFacebook: facebook.com/groups/peculiarbooksclubInstagram: @thepeculiarbookclub

A tulpa is a materialized being or thought-form, typically in human shape, that is created through spiritual practice and intense concentration. The term is borrowed from Tibetan Buddhism. Modern practitioners, who call themselves "tulpamancers", use the term to refer to a type of willed imaginary friend whom practitioners consider sentient and relatively independent. Modern practitioners predominantly consider tulpas a psychological rather than a paranormal phenomenon. The idea became an important belief in Theosophy. The concept of tulpas has origins in the Buddhist nirmāṇakāya, translated in Tibetan as sprul-pa: The earthly bodies that a buddha manifests in order to teach those who have not attained nirvana. The western understanding of tulpas was developed by 20th-century European mystical explorers, who interpreted the idea independently of buddhahood.Support the pod:www.patreon.com/monsterfuzz Check out our merch:https://monster-fuzz.creator-spring.com Everything else!www.linktr.ee/monsterfuzzBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/monster-fuzz--4349429/support.

Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 570 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - A mysterious fuzz appears and is this the worst gig of all time? We start off with pangolin based connotations and it's honestly not going to get much more intelligent beyond this point. Brian on the other hand has gone back to his carpentry roots and is in pain as a result so perhaps he should join Blake in his new sauna. Richard saw some live music and has observations and has finally completed the Ultimate MIDI Course! The death of the legendary Brian Wilson had Richard taking a long needed deep dive into the Beach Boys and was very pleasantly surprised and somewhat blown away...Meanwhile our good friend Andy Wood was on the Rick Beato show and the guys all discuss how much they love this before a pick falls out of Richard's beard. Line 6 have just released a new modeler and the guys feign vague interest. Brian may or may not be about to play a gig in the nude and Richard has suggestions for avoiding injury and has been sent a mysterious fuzz. Brian has fallen in love with a vintage Marshall...Pulp, Mini horses, The days of innocence, Neighbor Tom, Back in Black...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Courses, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/@chasingtonepodcastAwesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Contact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show
