In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I am thrilled and honored to sit down with the incredible Luke Bulla, one of my all-time favorite instrumentalists and vocalists. Our conversation is a deep dive into his remarkable musical journey and the experiences that have shaped his illustrious career.Luke's life has been steeped in music from an early age. At age four, he began touring and singing with his family band and took up the fiddle at seven. His prodigious talent quickly became evident as he went on to win the National Fiddle Contest in Weiser, Idaho, six times in his respective age categories. At sixteen, he made history by becoming the youngest winner of the Grand Champion division. By age ten, Luke had already made a mark at Nashville's Grand Master Fiddle Championship as the youngest top-ten finalist. In the spring of 1999, Luke moved to Nashville, diving headfirst into a full-time music career. His early years in Tennessee were marked by his stint with Ricky Skaggs' band, Kentucky Thunder, where his exceptional fiddle playing earned him his first Grammy Award. Following this, he joined the John Cowan Band. He performed and recorded with a host of renowned artists including Brandi Carlile, Jim Lauderdale, Darrell Scott, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, and many more. His collaborations read like a who's who of the music industry, featuring names such as Bryan Sutton, Kevin Costner & Modern West, Shawn Colvin, Tony Rice, Chris Thile, Peter Rowan, Patty Griffin, Glen Phillips, Rodney Crowell, and Earl Scruggs.Luke was a perennial instructor at Mark O'Connor's fiddle camps during his early years in Nashville. Alongside his long-time friend Casey Driessen, Luke founded the band Wisechild, which toured briefly with John Mayer and Counting Crows. He also played a pivotal role in the band W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration), a collaboration that included notable members like Sean Watkins, Glen Phillips, Sara Watkins, Benmont Tench, Pete Thomas, Greg Leisz, and Davey Faragher. In 2009, Luke released a solo EP featuring a stellar lineup of musicians, including Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, and Aoife O'Donovan. That same year, he joined Lyle Lovett's Large Band and toured full-time with them until 2023.In 2015, Luke co-founded the Bluegrass/Americana record label, Pure Music | Nashville, with music and business executive John L. Heithaus. The label released his LP, Who Loves You Better, in May 2016. Recorded at Zac Brown's Southern Ground Nashville studio and produced by Grammy winner Bryan Sutton, the LP showcases Luke's extraordinary musical talent.Join us for an enriching discussion as we explore Luke's diverse musical influences, his approach to songwriting, and the incredible journey that has led him to where he is today. This episode is a celebration of his enduring contribution to music and his unwavering passion for his craft.Music from the Episode:Luke Bulla - Temperance Reel (Luke Bulla/Guy Clark/J.R.Stuart)Luke Bulla - Who Loves You Better (Feat: Sarah Jarosz) (Lyle Lovett)Luke Bulla - On the Turning Away (David Gilmour and Anthony Moore)Luke Bulla - Tie Me Down and Set Me Free (Luke Bulla/J.R.Stuart)Thank you for listening! Songwriter/musician Jim Lauderdale shares his musical journey with correspondent Tom Wilmer
This week on Beale Street Caravan we have a star-studded lineup, joined together for an important cause: to defend the integrity of Memphis' drinking water. Grammy nominated artists Shemekia Copeland and Jim Lauderdale, along with Nashville singer-songwriter Will Kimbrough, iconic singer-songwriter and folk musician, Livingston Taylor, as well as Reba Russell, Joe Restivo and John Nemeth, and others, all got together for one night to sing, play, and raise money to make sure that our water remains a fresh, suitable source of life in our community.
Episode 276: John Leventhal is one of the quiet achievers of American roots music going back more than 30 years. Early on as a guitar player in his native New York City, he connected with Jim Lauderdale and Shawn Colvin, co-writing and producing their debut albums. He met his wife Rosanne Cash as they worked on the pivotal album The Wheel (see Episode 269). He's produced some epic albums since then for William Bell, Sarah Jarosz, and others, winning numerous Grammy and Americana awards in the process. At last, he lent his guitar and studio skills to making the solo debut album Rumble Strip. Rosanne is there for some duo vocals, but otherwise it's warm and tuneful instrumentals that foreground some of the lovely textures and grooves that have been behind so many albums we've loved. This all made for a fascinating conversation.
Guitarist and songwriter John Leventhal has spent almost a half century producing, playing for, and co-writing with some of the music world's most familiar names – Elvis Costello, Shawn Colvin, Jim Lauderdale, Marc Cohn, Joan Osborne, Sarah Jarosz, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Willie Nelson, and of course, Rosanne Cash, to whom Leventhal is married. He's won a fistful of Grammys, but the one thing he hasn't done in all that time is a solo record. Until now. Rumble Strip is a collection of instrumentals, a few songs, and a surprising cover or two. John Leventhal plays some of these tunes in-studio. 1. Floyd Cramer's Dream 2. JL's Hymn No. 2 3. That's All I Know About Arkansas
This week we feature singer, songwriter and guitar player Jim Lauderdale. Jim has recently put out an album with the Po' Ramblin' Boys. We talk with Jim about his long career in music which includes recording with bluegrass legends like Ralph Stanley and winning two Grammy awards. We will also discuss his success as a songwriter in country and bluegrass music, his recording with the Po' Ramblin' Boys, and much more.
When was the last time you picked up a book or a magazine instead of going to your smart phone or computer to read about music? I admit that, like so many of us these days, my first instinct is to scroll through social media or look at websites. The rise of digital media along with the ubiquity of smart phones has been nothing short of dramatic; the subsequent decline of print and other physical media is also impossible to ignore. Roots music journal No Depression, like so many others, went out of print in the midst of that sea change, although it continued online. Eventually it would reemerge, however, with new ownership and a new format as a quarterly publication, while offering a website covering music news as well as articles, columns and reviews. In an era where the expense of printing a magazine is more and more impossible to recoup, No Depression has managed to do just that. It remains as one of only a handful of music publications, and that is remarkable by itself. This is just part of our story here, though, as we welcome Assistant Editor and nodepression.com director Stacy Chandler to this episode of Southern Songs and Stories. Stacy spoke with me at the end of September, 2023 in Raleigh, North Carolina during the International Bluegrass Music Association's yearly event. Comprised of a wide ranging music industry conference as well as a music festival, the IBMAs, as it is often called, feature music panels geared towards music artists and professionals, showcase events where attendees can get introduced to new artists, and even Tai Chi classes courtesy of Jim Lauderdale. I was not up at 8 a.m. to take Jim's classes, but I did take in as much as I could in the whirlwind week of all things bluegrass, including this conversation with Stacy Chandler as well as bluegrass legend Pete Wernick, and both Steve Mougin and Ben Wright, who will be featured in upcoming episodes here. Stacy Chandler of No Depression interviewed at the IBMA conference 09-30-23 In this episode, we touch on the history of No Depression as well as some of the artists and articles in its current issue, plus we share takeaways from this year's IBMAs while we examine the bigger picture of bluegrass music in 2023. It is a far ranging conversation which focuses on one of the biggest weeks of the year for the genre, the ways bluegrass has changed over the decades, as well as the parallel story of print journalism in the age of smart phones. Songs heard in this episode:“No Depression In Heaven” by The Carter Family“Thirsty” by Mipso, from Book Of Fools, excerpt“Slipknot > Casey Jones” by The Waybacks & Friends, from One Way Or Another, excerpt“Listen To The Radio” by Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle, from More Than A Whisper: Celebrating the Music of Nanci GriffithThank you for visiting us and giving this podcast a listen! This series is a part of the lineup of both public radio WNCW and Osiris Media, with all of the Osiris shows available here. You can also hear new episodes on Bluegrass Planet Radio here. Thanks to everyone at the International Bluegrass Music Association for making this episode possible, and to Corrie Askew for producing the radio adaptations of this series on public radio WNCW, and to Joshua Meng, who wrote and performed out theme songs. This is Southern Songs and Stories: the music of the South and the artists who make it. - Joe Kendrick
After two decades in The Infamous Stringdusters, the Grammy-award winning neo bluegrass band, Travis Book releases his rock americana debut: Love and Other Strange Emotions. That's not to say that Book, who thrives on collaboration, got here on his own. The Colorado musician (now residing in Western North Carolina), was raised by parents who went out their way to ensure that young Travis respected music and had access to instruments. His mother bought him his first bass guitar and his dad allowed him to buy Red Hot Chilli Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magik (even though it had a parental advisory sticker on the cover). As Travis went off to college in Durango, CO, he found a supportive and vibrant Bluegrass scene where he encountered future members of Greensky Bluegrass (Anders Beck), Leftover Salmon (Andy Thorn) and The Jon Stickley Trio. Those musicians would form their first bluegrass band Broke Mountain Bluegrass Band, which has just reissued a remastered version of their album Cabin in the Hills. In our conversation, Travis talks about his brief time in Nashville, after he auditioned for The Stringdusters and got the gig as their upright bass player and vocalist. Spoiler alert: he felt VERY intimidated. We get into why he loves collaborations so much and has chosen to create his variety show turned podcast, The Travis Book Happy Hour, into an engine for unique performances with guests like Lindsay Lou, Jim Lauderdale, Sierra Hull and many more. The Happy Hour, which started in Spring 2020, was first set without an audience, which made Travis let go of his attachment to their reaction using wisdom borrowed from Eastern philosophy. He also explains how he is romantic, yet practical in everything he works to accomplish. Travis is a literal ray of positivity, so if you're having a bad day, I promise that this conversation's gonna lift you up in a seriously not-cornball way. On a recent trip to Wellington, I went shopping for (and purchased) some second-hand CD's – but NEW to me. I thought I'd share them with you all. Music from Jim Lauderdale, Chris Jones, Alison Krauss, the original Jimmie Rodgers, Ricky Skaggs and Roy Acuff. There's some songs from Dierks Bentley, and Delia Bell and Bill Grant, as well as a tune from the HCBB featuring mandolinist Graham Lovejoy.
A fun change of pace this week on the show. Earlier this year, I co-produced a tribute album to Americana icon Jim Lauderdale, featuring an eclectic group of incredible Australian artists reinterpreting Jim's incredible songbook. Today, Michael Carpenter, who co-produced the record and played the bulk of the music you hear on the album, as well as mixing and mastering the project, joins me to break it down track by track. We get into how each song and artist were chosen, the arrangement process and how each track evolved over the months of production. Blake O'Connor and Sinead Burgess - Hole in My Head Adam Harvey - Where the Sidewalk Ends Imogen Clark - Tough All Over Katie Brianna - You Don't Seem To Miss Me Georgia Mooney - The Brighter Side of Lonely Ella Hooper and Davey Lane - Halfway Down Charlie Collins - You'll Know When It's Right Holiday Sidewinder - Planet of Love Clayton Doley and Jade MacRae - It's A Trap Georgia State Line - Run Like You Shane Nicholson - El Dorado Melody Pool - When Carolina Comes Home Again Emma Swift - The King of Broken Hearts Kevin Bennett - Headed for the Hills

John Leventhal is a multiple Grammy Award-winning producer, guitarist and songwriter who has been steering the ship on many albums and musical projects over the last 40 years. John first came onto most people's radar when he produced Shawn Colvin's successful debut album “Steady On”. They collaborated again in 1996 on “A Few Small Repairs” which was a smash hit. Coming up in the New York live music scene, John also worked with Jim Lauderdale in those years and produced Jim's debut as well. A late bloomer to music and the electric guitar, John has developed a subtle yet complex and unmistakeable sound that has kept him working as a live musician and producer for artists like William Bell, Marc Cohn, Sara Jarosz, and Rodney Crowell. Leventhal has also produced a slew of successful and acclaimed albums with his wife of many years, Rosanne Cash. As a songwriter, he's penned songs for Tedeschi Trucks, Vince Gill, George Strait, Patty Loveless, and many more. John has (finally!) made his debut solo album which he is threatening to release sometime this year, called “Rumble Strip”. I've heard it, can vouch for its awesomeness, and we talk about it on the show, although you won't be able to hear it for some months yet! John is a bit elusive - he doesn't have a website, but watch for the new album, and he'll be out on tour with Rosanne Cash - you can find info on their dates at www.rosannecash.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. This episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca

Career highlights include performing at Merlefest, performing with Molly Tuttle, Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show, members of Billy Strings, Town Mountain, Fireside Collective, Jim Lauderdale, Larry Keel and Natural Bridge, George Clinton, Jeff Sipe among others, and playing lead electric guitar in Ween drummer Claude Coleman's outfit, Amandla. Reposting this episode in memory of Peter Cooper, who we sadly lost today. Journalist and singer-songwriter Peter Cooper of the Country Music Hall of Fame joins me to talk about Jim Lauderdale's classic ‘Pretty Close to the Truth' album and how the changes in country music in the 90s created the need for the Americana music genre, the migration of people like Jim and his friend and collaborator Buddy Miller from California to Nashville, and how Jim helped Peter propose to his wife.
Correspondent Tom Wilmer visits with musician Jim Lauderdale who shares his passion for music and incredible life journey.
Jim Lauderdale and Jorma Kaukonen perform solo sets recorded October 22, 2022 at the Fur Peace Ranch.
This week, we call on an Americana pioneer and a beloved fixture of the Nashville roots-country scene, the always affable Grammy-winner Jim Lauderdale. This year he celebrated the release of his thirty-fifth record Game Changer. Growing up in both North and South Carolina, as a young man Lauderdale fell in love with country music but took an unconventional path to becoming a sought-after songwriter, harmonist and writer in Music City. He toured in New York theatre productions when he was starting out, and ended up in LA. Even today you can hear the drama in his aching harmony-soaked songs like “Lightning Love” off Game Changer. While sales and national recognition haven't always aligned, the “stylistically restless” Lauderdale has played the Opry over 200 times, collaborated on albums with his heroes like the late bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley, written tracks for artists as diverse as George Strait and Elvis Costello, and has accidentally become one of the leading elder-statesman of the Americana movement. What is Americana exactly? Even Jim impishly won't say. But it's that earthy genre-bending sound that has kept his longtime fans coming back for more nearly for decades into his storied run. Today I'm bringing you a conversation with one of the most recorded pedals steel players in modern times - Russ Pahl. Russ has played on all the great T-Bone Burnett records of the past bunch of years, and has also recorded for the likes of Sturgill Simpson, Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley, Norah Jones, Blake Shelton, Orville Peck, Marcus King, Ceelo Green, Yola, Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller, and the list goes on. From his early days cutting his teeth in country bands around Minneapolis, to moving to Nashville in the 80's, he has managed to hone his craft and develop a unique sound. He scored a cool gig with Dickey Betts in the late 80's, and then Buddy Miller started calling him for his productions, and Vince Gill had him in his live band for about 5 years. It seems that after about 2000, the floodgates just opened and when someone wanted a steel player that didn't play the same licks as everyone else and had a creative approach, Russ was the one to call. We had a great conversation and get into all that stuff, and more. Enjoy, share and please subscribe wherever you get your podcasts!Listen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. This episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca
If it's one thing that we love here at americana podcast, it is the concept of the artistic process. We're not alone in this, it seems that when anyone speaks about artists, musical, visual, conceptual- you name it- one of the first things people will go into or ask about, is how a piece of art came to exist. We've been doing it for three years on this show. And even when you ask an artist “how did you do this?” There's no guarantee you're going to get a straight answer. If anything, in the interest of mystique- you're more likely to be left with more questions about creation than you are to be given clarity. Our curiosity about the subject is inherently curious. If it present, if it already exists for us to view, or listen to or think about, why do we care how it got there? That feels like a much deeper question that a philosopher would probably be able to answer. But as a semi-professional music lover with a microphone, I think it's because the artistic process reminds us that art, no matter it's shape, is still inherently human. That it is subject to the time, and strengths, and limitations, and abilities of the one who makes it. The artist lives a life, inherently creates based on that experience, and then puts those creations out into the world to say “I've made this”.It's a very human process. And even when it's difficult to like humanity, it is easy to love that which reminds us that we're still human. On today's episode, we welcome an artist who embraces that humanity and pursues creation and the artistic process. Enough to have made 34 records so far in his career. Jim Lauderdale, a native of Troutman, South Carolina released his first record in 1991. A natural collaborator, he's worked with the likes of Rodney Crowell, Buddy Miller, Nick Lowe, and Roland White. And he's had songs cut by everyone from Elvis Costello to George Straight. And like anyone in the music industry, he's had ups and downs. And he'd be the first to tell you. In just a few moments of being in a room with Lauderdale, it is difficult not be struck by his kindness and forthcoming nature (he's also a bit of a prankster, I found out the hard way). So Join us on this episode as our host Robert Earl Keen, speaks with Jim Lauderdale about the artistic process, the documented phenomenon of “the Jim Lauderdale effect”, and more.
