“I brainstorm but then when I’m writing, I start to have different ideas coming from different parts of my mind and then I start to mix things up. When I start to mix things up, I lose control and when I lose control, I write, write, write and then I run out of time and I haven’t said what I want to say and I don’t have time to check my essay and I start to freak out. “ This is how one of my students explained the experience of sitting down to write the IELTS essay. In this episode I breakdown the grammatical range and accuracy area of the marking criteria for both writing and speaking tasks, then I show you how you can apply grammar to speaking task 2 so that you are able to get a good score in this area of the IELTS exam. Writing Task 2 Prompt in the Episode: Prompt: Describe and unhealthy habit you had in the past You should say: What the habit was Why you quit How you quit How your life has benefited from this Example Response One unhealthy habit that I had in the past was smoking. I used to smoke between the ages of 16 and 29. I finally quit for good when I was 29, although I had attempted to quit several times in the past before that. It was always a struggle to quit but I found it was more of struggle to never pick up a cigarette again. I would quit and go for long periods without smoking, maybe even up to two years, and then I would always think that I could have just one cigarette again and give in. This of course wasn’t the case and I always became addicted right away. I finally chose to quit because it was so unhealthy. After having quit several times I could see the positive benefits quitting had on my health and it always made me feel terrible to quit. I always quit by using simply will power and knowledge. I knew that after three days I wasn’t physically addicted any more and it was all mental. So I would just tell myself I didn’t need one, even though I was really craving them, and pretty quickly I would start to believe it! My life has been great since then. I met my husband soon after I quit and he absolutely hates smokers, so it’s a good thing I wasn’t smoking then. I also have a family now and it’s nice knowing that I won’t get cancer or get sick from smoking, I need to be around for my children. In general I feel much better and I can take up any sport or new activity without feeling ill. Overall, it’s been one of the best things I’ve done in my life.
