Feliks Banel's guests on this LIVE REMOTE BROADCAST of CASCADE OF HISTORY from the farewell event for Seattle High School Memorial Stadium include Clay Eals and Jean Sherrard of the Seattle Times' Seattle Now & Then; Northwest sports historian and collector David Eskenazi; and music historian Eric Magnuson. The 1947 stadium, deemed unworthy of landmark status, will soon be demolished and a shiny new stadium built in its place. The structure, designed by noted architect George Stoddard, was dedicated in 1947 to the memory of 800+ Seattle Public Schools alums who died in World War II. Apart from bidding farewell to the doomed (not "domed") stadium, discussion also included the recent passing of Bobby Sherman, who played Jeremy Bolt on "Here Come The Brides" - the 1969-1971 TV series set in 1860s Seattle, which also spawned the song, "(The Bluest Skies You've Ever Seen Are In) Seattle." This LIVE broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY was originally presented at 4pm Pacific Standard Time on Thursday, June 26, 2025 via SPACE 101.1 FM and gallantly streaming live via space101fm.org from the rainy and nearly deserted parking lot in front of Seattle High School Memorial Stadium at Seattle Center. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1080: Today we're talking about winners - how Roger Penske was honored with the Automotive News Centennial Award, how 14 states have won back $5B in EV charging funs and how Meta and Anthropic both won copyright lawsuits.Show Notes with links:Auto and racing icon Roger Penske received the Automotive News Centennial Award, and shows no signs of slowing down despite being 88. He reflected on six decades of building a business empire by putting people first. He credits a coin from his father inscribed ā€œEffort equals resultsā€ as a lifelong guiding principle.Penske said focusing on people over products is key, calling it the ā€œsecret sauceā€ behind building an organization with 74,000 employees.Nearly all leadership growth at Penske is internal—95% of management moves are promotions. He raised concerns over the future of the dealer franchise model, warning that direct-to-consumer shifts could undermine the system if not addressed individually. He described Elon Musk as a great industry disrupter saying ā€œā€œMusk came in here and did an amazing job. He turned the industry on its head.ā€ā€A federal judge in Seattle has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from axing billions in EV charging funds to 14 states, ruling that the states are likely to win their case. The Biden-era $5B EV charger program was frozen in February, with state plans rescinded.Judge Tana Lin ruled that withholding the funds likely violated federal law, harming states that invested in infrastructure expecting federal support. The injunction gives the Trump administration seven days to appeal. Two federal judges delivered back-to-back wins for AI developers this week, siding with Anthropic and Meta in copyright lawsuits brought by authors. While both rulings support ā€œfair useā€ in AI training, the door remains open for future legal challenges. In the Anthropic case, Judge Alsup ruled the company could legally train AI on physical books it bought and digitized, calling it ā€œtransformative — spectacularly so.ā€He drew the line at pirated content, saying a separate trial will determine damages for ā€œmillionsā€ of unauthorized books stored by Anthropic.Meta also secured a summary judgment, with Judge Chhabria stating that plaintiffs ā€œmade the wrong argumentsā€ — not that Meta's actions were fully lawful. The judges dismissed claims that AI models like Claude and LLaMA meaningfully harm book markets or replicate texts at scale.Judge Alsup added: ā€œThe Authors' complaint is no different than if they complained that training schoolchildren to write well would result in an explosion of competing works.ā€Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Seattle's Denny Blaine Park—dubbed ā€œPervert Parkā€ by critics—is now at the center of a major legal battle. A neighborhood group has filed a motion in King County Superior Court to temporarily shut down the park, citing daily incidents of public sex, drug use, and harassment. The plaintiffs, including LGBTQ+ residents and longtime neighbors, accuse the City and Mayor Bruce Harrell of ignoring repeated warnings and failing to enforce the law—despite promises made as early as 2022. New video evidence, declarations, and disturbing photos submitted to the court reveal the extent of the alleged illegal activity. Now, a judge must decide whether to close the park until the City produces a plan to restore safety. The court hearing is scheduled for July 11.

    Alan Weiss' The Uncomfortable Truth

SHOW NOTES: Fight, Flight, Fright, or Fall Down Quaking We feel powerless in an age of volatility and disruption, of lack of trust in our institutions, and of polarization among those supposed to represent our best interests and not merely their own. Fight or flight has added fright to the equation, but it seems to me there's also the new option of hiding under the bed (fall down quaking). Whining has become a national past time, and we hear of "toxic bosses, poisonous workplaces, unfair demands, too little pay for too much work. And the anodyne solutions is "soak the rich, tax the wealthy, take back....well, whatever." Those experiments in Seattle and Portland, which were actually anarchic takeovers and the end of law and order didn't work out so well, did they? The Great City of San Francisco, where we lived for a glorious while in the 70s is not filthy and dangerous in many areas. The homeless often physically confront pedestrians. At least we don't hear "defund the police" so much anymore, since it's such a stupid concept. The homeless, the mentally ill, deserve and require empathy beyond a police response. But when the bad guys are trying to break the law, trying to steal, trying to create chaos, we need more police not fewer. In the long run this is about perceived powerlessness. We've lost faith and thereby feel alienated, which causes us to "drop out" (not vote) and the results are the greater influence of those with whom we don't agree, creating a greater sense of powerlessness and a "doom loop" exsistence. There are a lot of positive things going on in the country, and other things that well-meaning people would like to change. Fair enough, but that takes will power and relative fearlessness, not some kind of hibernation. At least we've stopped taking the names of the Founding Fathers, Lincoln and others off of public buildings. We're more concerned about gender and bathrooms today than we are with public welfare, quality education, and decency. Fortunately, the system is brilliant and survived, made to endure even when run by idiots from either party.

Seizures, sleepless nights, and mysterious white patches on his skin marked the beginning of Daniel's journey with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). Diagnosed at age 6, Daniel faced a childhood filled with MRIs, EEGs, and specialist visits, often requiring cross-country travel for coordinated care. In this moving episode of On Rare, David Rintell, Head of Patient Advocacy at BridgeBio, and Mandy Rohrig, Senior Director of Patient Advocacy at BridgeBio Gene Therapy, speak with Daniel, a 31-year-old living in Seattle, about growing up with TSC, the emotional toll of visible symptoms, and the stigma he faced from peers. He reflects on the cognitive and mood impacts of TSC, including OCD and outbursts, and how he often kept to himself to feel more accepted. Today, Daniel is an active advocate in the TSC community, emphasizing the importance of connection, representation, and finding support among those with shared experiences. As he puts it, ā€œYou have to find your people.ā€ Che-Wei Chang, Principal Scientist at BridgeBio, presents a medical overview of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), a rare genetic disorder marked by seizures and benign tumors throughout the body. TSC results from a spontaneous mutation in a single copy of the TSC1 or TSC2 gene, which normally inhibit mTOR, an enzyme that regulates cell growth. Loss of this inhibition leads to mTOR hyperactivation, leading to abnormal cell proliferation and tumors in the brain, kidneys, skin, and other organs. Diagnosis typically involves identifying tubers in the brain along with tumors in other organs and is confirmed through genetic testing. Treatments include mTOR inhibitors, which are effective against many TSC-related tumors, and anti-seizure medications, although drug resistance is common.
