Chrono Trigger. You only need to say the name for the bellies of gamers to warm with nostalgia. It’s keystone experience for many of us, and plenty of games have gone on to cite it as an inspiration. SquareEnix itself has even taken a stab at creating games like I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear, which took elements of Chrono Trigger and attempted to update them for modern gamers. Oftentimes, the result is decidedly mixed. But if there is one game that could succeed, it could be Sea of Stars. The game hails from the Quebec-based Sabotage Studio, which created the acclaimed The Messenger. That game was a retro ninja platformer reminiscent of Ninja Gaiden, so you wouldn’t expect their next big game to be a turn-based RPG. But with Sea of Stars, that’s exactly what we’re getting. I had a chance to speak with Thierry Boulanger, the creative director and president of Sabotage Studio, where we discussed the origin of the game, its gameplay mechanics, its base story, and its inspirations.
Take a look into the genesis, classic inspirations, and development of Sabotage Games' double-retro indie hit The Messenger as Jeremy Parish speaks to creators Thierry Boulanger and Martin Brouard.
