Before Brexit, merchants could sell cross-border into the U.K. and mainland Europe with relative ease. Both belonged to the E.U. Eric Bandholz is the Founder and CEO of Beardbrand, a men's beard care company. He started Beardbrand after leaving a corporate role to pursue his passion for men's grooming and beard care. Eric is also the host of Practical Ecommerce's podcast Ecommerce Conversations, in which he interviews startup founders and founders of brands valued at $100 million. In this episode… What does it take to be recognized by strangers on the street for your brand? You don't have to compete with big-name brands to get widespread recognition; you just have to relate to your customers. How can you scale your brand's reach while honing your entrepreneurial skills? While traveling, Eric Bandholz is often recognized as the charismatic face of his brand. He attributes this acknowledgment to his natural storytelling abilities and maintains that this factor sets independent brands apart from large retailers like Amazon, which doesn't connect with consumers authentically. Eric doesn't invest in paid ads and instead recommends creating organic content that showcases a distinctive brand personality. Developing this personality may also involve giving your products unique and memorable names that capture consumers' attention and entice them to purchase from you. In the latest episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, Eric Bandholz, the Founder and CEO of Beardbrand, joins William Harris for a discussion about charismatic leadership and brand storytelling. Eric explains the importance of persevering during tough times, how to identify a work-life balance that aligns with your core values, and his presence on DTCX.

For more info and resources from this episode, visit www.ajfgrowth.com/zollie EPISODE SUMMARY Sarah Resnick has been helping crafters and, more specifically, weavers create beautiful custom projects for years. And as she did, she realized something: people need help understanding how color works. So she spent two years developing a product that can help makers of all kinds get better at making color decisions more effectively without going to the trouble of learning the intricacies of color theory. The product is brilliant: it's a simple deck of cards that takes the customer by the hand through the decision-making process on their projects. Sarah realized that the product had big potential for one of her brands, Zollie, so she got together with Andrew for a specific request: how can she launch the product as effectively as possible without a monster budget? So on this Opening The Books, Andrew coached her through the entire process on each of her channels. They talked about how to handle hype emails, building product-specific lists, and how to approach it in her Meta Ads account. EPISODE SPONSORS MORE STAFFING: Virtual assistants can be helpful. If starting a lifestyle brand has always been a dream of yours, this episode with Eric Bandholz, founder of Beardbrand, is a real treat. He shares how maintaining full control through bootstrapping allowed him to prioritize ethical sourcing and customer relationships over rapid growth. His story is a real inspiration for anyone who wants to create a business that not only succeeds financially but also supports their quality of life while staying true to their personal values.About Eric BandholzEric Bandholz started Beardbrand in 2012 with a simple goal: to make men feel awesome. From its beginnings as an online community, Beardbrand has grown into a major brand in the $3.2 billion beard care market, now offering a broad range of grooming products and even a brick-and-mortar barbershop in Austin. Eric attributes his success to staying true to his core values, especially freedom, which is grounded in stoic principles of focusing on what you can control. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Eric left the corporate world behind to create a community-centric brand. Operating as a bootstrap venture, Eric has steered Beardbrand, focusing on sustainable growth and independence, avoiding external investments. He advocates for the lifestyle business model, encouraging a balance between personal well-being and professional success. Key Insights:Incorporate your core values into your business strategy. Core values are much more than psychology mumbo-jumbo; they shape every decision you make in your business. They help to reflect what your company stands for and attract customers who share these beliefs.Enjoy your entrepreneurial journey. Even though everyday tasks might often feel like a drag, finding meaning in them can help to maintain motivation and prevent burnout. And remember that there's always something to celebrate, no matter how small.  Leverage bootstrapping for greater control. Using your own money to fund your business can keep you in control and help you make quick decisions that are right for your business without external pressure. Focus on sustainable business growth. Choose growth strategies that fit your goals and business vision. Opting for steady, predictable growth is better than chasing overnight success, as it helps to maintain product quality, protects your reputation, and ensures your business grows in a manageable way.Build and engage your community. Hosting events, starting discussions on social media, creating loyalty programs, featuring spotlight customers, offering behind-the-scenes content… These are just a few ways you can turn your buyers into brand advocates and build a community that supports your growth. Eric's best advice for entrepreneurs:"What matters is that you're enjoying the journey [...] When you can focus on building today and what I'm doing at this moment, then it doesn't really matter where you end up."Get Eric's “Book of Reminders”Connect with Eric Bandholz:LinkedinInstagramXBeardbrandFollow Beyond 8 Figures:LinkedinXWebsite

You probably know Beardbrand and its founder, Eric Bandholz. Beardbrand rose to prominence in the ecommerce landscape as they built a YouTube channel with over a million subscribers, thereby powering their customer acquisition with basically zero investment in paid marketing channels. But as the impact of their organic efforts began to fade in 2022 and into 2023, Bandholz and his team decided that they needed to crack the code on Meta Ads. The problem? This channel had never been successful for them before. So when Bandholz reached out to me to see if I could be any help as they handed the keys to a talented but green (as far as paid social is concerned) team member, Mike Lawson, I suggested he come on the podcast and build a plan from the ground-up, complete with screenshares of their actual Meta Ads account. In this episode, you'll learn exactly how I'd build an ad account almost from the ground-up centering on a consolidated, broad-targeted, Bid Cap strategy, and you'll even get a follow-up a month after our initial recording to see how their efforts were going. We've always had around 15% margins, but not in 2023.We experienced declining sales, unexpected tax bills, a frivolous lawsuit, and the loss of a key wholesale account. The last time host Eric Bandholz discussed his company in an episode was in July. Things were close to their worst. He had furloughed his team for a month. But now the team is back to full-time. His strategy is focusing on Facebook as an acquisition channel. He switched the company's Facebook marketing approach from multi-phase testing to bid caps.He made the change at the beginning of October, and he's seeing cost per acquisition fall in line with profit expectations. The downside is that there are only a few conversions daily due to the negligible budget. Beardbrand is now at a breakeven profit-wise. That's not what he expected after 11 years, but he has "come to terms with the fact that this is essentially a new business. I have to look at Beardbrand from a startup perspective. What worked for us when we launched in 2012 is entirely different than now."It's a new beginning for a venerable, 11-year business, as told here in an admirably transparent manner. For an edited and condensed transcript with embedded audio, see: https://pec-ly.com/?6pO3For all condensed transcripts with audio, see: https://www.practicalecommerce.com/tag/podcasts******The mission of Practical Ecommerce is to help online merchants improve their businesses. #91 Ronnie Teja from Branzio Watches: Scale Your E-Commerce to 8 Figures with SEO Ronnie Tejais the Founder of Branzio Watches. With over 15 years of experience in digital marketing all around the world, Ronnie knows a thing or two about building marketing strategies, building a business, and perseverance. Tune in to hear Daniel and Ronnie discuss: ✔️ Ronnie's Path to E-Commerce ✔️ Discovering the Importance of SEO ✔️ Is SEO Worth the Time? ✔️ The Value of Email Marketing ✔️ Advice for Entrepreneurs Ronnie's Path to E-Commerce Ronnie is a ‘self-taught' digital marketer, leading online marketing strategies for businesses around the world. After moving to Canada, Ronnie harnessed his marketing skills in work for HSBC, BestBuy, and SoftwareKing. At 29 years old, Ronnie decided to invest his time in the watch market. Once he read that watch profit margins are ‘phenomenal' he jumped right in! “My focus from day one was to find the supply chain, the suppliers, the ops, and run a team that is far more efficient than I could be as an individual.” Branzio Watches hire leading watchmakers and designers from around the world. Ronnie's job is to harness global talent as efficiently as possible. “I'm a generalist who is surrounded by extremely capable specialists.” Discovering the Importance of SEO Ronnie learned all about SEO through networking. If you're in e-commerce, Ronnie highly recommends going to the yearly Chiang Mai SEO Conference in northern Thailand. “You will be surrounded by some of the best people around and the friendliest people who are happy to talk about SEO.” The Chiang Mai SEO conference is especially valuable in bringing together so many perspectives on SEO from different spaces in digital marketing. Ronnie's self-taught SEO knowledge was based entirely on Google Paid ads, but over the last 7 years, he's acquired several websites in the affiliate space. Learning about SEO in the affiliate space showed Ronnie what he needed to scale. Ronnie favors a holistic approach to SEO. Networking with digital marketers across industries to explore how different platforms present different opportunities for SEO. Is SEO Worth the Time? To put it simply: yes. You just need to be patient. Just as you need to have a paid strategy, a social media strategy, or an influencer strategy, you need an SEO strategy. And if you're worried about things taking too long? 4 years ago, Branzio Watches were getting 5000 visits per day, today they have around 2 million. And that's free organic traffic. That's a lot of revenue. If you want to be an entrepreneur, Ronnie advises, you need to think of the long-term. While prioritization varies from store to store, Ronnie says that paid ads, influencers, SEO, and email should be at the foundation of any e-commerce business. No one element of digital marketing (such as paid ads) is a get-rich-quick solution. A lucrative marketing strategy uses multiple channels. And it takes time. The Value of Email Marketing “Email is basically like free sales.” Like Daniel, Ronnie is in love with Klaviyo. He's even on their customer advisory board. 12% - 13% of total store revenue in Branzio Watches comes from email. “So always keep an eye on how to grow your email list.” A fantastic way to do that is through a quiz. If you're looking for an example of what a great Shop Quiz looks like, Ronnie recommends checking out Beardbrand. Their quiz recruits 600 - 1000 subscribers a week. Advice for Entrepreneurs “Perseverance, man, you need to persevere, don't give up.” Ronnie says that he truly found focus last year. He gave up drinking, started waking up at 5 am, and his life changed. He doesn't work 80 hours, he works a normal 30 - 35 hours a week, but his efficiency has skyrocketed. Ronnie isn't a fan of the “100 hour working week” hustle culture. Ronnie advises that people often make the mistake of thinking that if they follow one golden rule they'll get there. Everyone is different. Most entrepreneurs have two of three qualities: They're very passionate about their idea. They're in the right place at the right time. They put in years of work. If you're truly passionate about your idea, you'll see it through to the end. Check out Branzio Watches and follow Ronnie on LinkedIn for more great e-commerce advice. Thank you for listening! Now that you've gotten your most loyal and interested customers to sign up for your SMS program, it's time to show them what your brand can really offer. Get to know your consumers Take that personal touch SMS allows you to the next level, and show your shoppers how much they, individually, matter to you. Get to know them, not their buying habits or their order history, but who they are.  Reply to any SMS inquiries with their first name, without asking for it in the interaction. You have it on file, put it to use. Eventually you will begin to remember them naturally. Engage them in small talk, such as asking them about how they use your product, and remember to bring it up in later engagements, such as offers for those specific interests. Show that you remember them, and that they made an impact on you Know your product inside and out. You are the final level of customer service, the pinnacle of what your brand offers, and if you don't know the product, then your customer won't trust you Believe in your core brand mission and what you do. The highest quality service has the highest quality expectations, and SMS interactions are no place for you to be lackluster and disengaged. Follow the most basic rule of both customer service and human behaviour; treat them like you would want to be treated At the end of the day, your customers aren't just a set of data points, or profit margins, or conversion rates; they're people, with their own cares, concerns and presumptions, and it's incredibly important not to lose sight of that. Be interested in them, be patient with them and be available for them, and they will never forget your brand. You may be ready to connect with your customers via SMS, says Beardbrand's Sly Castillo, but does your store or site reflect that? Are you really offering the most you can for your membership program? The best way to turn visitors into subscribers is to make the choice and process as easy and enticing as possible. Promote your opt-in text membership as frequently as you can without overstating your case. Have your SMS number, and the basic steps for subscribing and cancelling, clearly posted on your most active pages. Link the promo, banner or copy the number appears in to a page that clearly details membership benefits and agreements. Much more important though, is to not be satisfied at just wooing customers with membership features, such as special offers, tips & tricks, in-depth tutorials or sneak peaks of new products and services.  Design a membership experience that is beyond your customer's expectation  Make every membership engagement post sign-up personal, casually-intimate and as one-on-one as possible to ensure memorable and lasting connections Offer a place for your customers to belong, a way for them to bond with each other through your brand and products, and let them feel apart of your success Invest the time and attention and turn your SMS membership strategy into more than just another brand account for customers to sign up to. Make it a value added factor not just for their shopping experience but for their lives, and they will return again and again. Despite being very common for personal use, SMS outreach for connecting consumers with business remains under-utilized, often misunderstood and an infrequently-turned to tool for customer engagement. Although an incredibly cost effective option, most businesses fail to see the true potential for consumer outreach.  Beardbrand is not such a company, says Castillo, and your brand shouldn't be either. Measuring Up The biggest problem most companies have with using SMS is not knowing how to measure the response. Text messages led to very different behaviour from customers than emails do, and if you gauge their effectiveness by the metrics of another medium, like email, you'll be completely lost. Look at connection per week and per month rates, NOT conversion to sale rates.  This may seem counter-intuitive, since your ultimate goal is to improve profits, but the real power of SMS is to engage customers on a more intimate, personal level, humanizing your brand.  Consider everything you send your customers through SMS as purely Value Added: Give them a sneak peak of new products or brand news Grant early access to trial products Provide tutorials, guidance and advice about using your products The more you generate those Connections, letting customers interact with your company for reasons aside from buying your product, the more you will enjoy both high-consumer trust & loyalty to your product and brand. Eric Bandholz is the Co-founder and CEO of Beardbrand, a community and direct-to-consumer business with a mission to make men awesome. Eric and his team work to break down the negative stereotypes that surround bearded men through Beardbrand's blog, YouTube videos, and line of highly versatile grooming products. In 2014, Eric represented the brand on Shark Tank, launching Beardbrand to national recognition. Since then, the company has been featured by GQ, Men's Health, Forbes, and more. In this episode… When Eric Bandholz created Beardbrand in 2012, he had one mission: to make men feel awesome. Since then, he has built a community of like-minded beardsmen, launched a successful line of grooming products, and, most recently, opened a brick-and-mortar barbershop. So, how does he manage to expand his business while still maintaining that original mission? According to Eric, it's all about staying true to your core values. As a strong believer in stoicism, he has learned to relinquish control and focus on freedom instead. As he says, this value is a driving force in every interaction, development, and venture he has within Beardbrand. By leading with his core values, Eric has created a brand that not only achieved his mission, but exceeded it.  On this episode of the eCommerce Profits Podcast, Joshua Chin talks with Eric Bandholz, the Co-founder and CEO of Beardbrand, about the mission and values behind his successful brand. Eric discusses the role stoicism has played in his entrepreneurial journey, his vision for Beardbrand's expansion, and why selling your company may not be the best option in the long run. So you've managed to get your customers to hand over their SMS numbers, what now? How do you take full advantage and use to get the most out of their interest and contact information in a way that doesn't feel like you're spamming the customers with needless and unwanted messages and offers? Look to industry leaders and how they handle their SMS collections, says our own host of Pitstop and Rolled Up Podcasts, Lucas Walker. Beardbrand has created a mostly interactive SMS based system, in which the customer is just as much a force for activity and engagement over messaging as the store itself is. Customers can text to opt-in to special programs, upcoming offers, alerts about new products, as well as use the service to ask item and product related questions, or even inquire about the right products for them, while offering tailor made exclusives they can find no where else.  With every interaction the customer engages in, your brand receives more information you can use to specify your outreach to those customers, via SMS Collection segmenting. By segmenting your SMS opted-in consumers based on the information they give you, be it their buying habits, or the kind topics and items they have questions about, or even separating them by location, you can not only tailor your content to them in the most effective manner, which will result in further engagement with your store, but can avoid accidentally annoying them, or worse, costing them money. A service where clients can text you questions is great for outreach, but if you offer this to foreign customers, who may be charged extra for international texting, then you may instead drive them away.  Correctly implemented to avoid these issues, such as through Omnisend's easy-start SMS marketing programs, and incredibly helpful monitoring options, you can segment your SMS collection to get the most effectiveness from your outreach campaign, while further feeding the cycle of customer engagement to sale to customer engagement to sale, and avoid over-investing your time and resources in toxic or lost clients, while refocusing and maintaining your healthier lists. It may seem unbelievable, but the whole concept stemmed from what he deemed a silly job requirement earlier in his career. -- The Exit - Presented By Flippa: A 30-minute podcast featuring expert entrepreneurs who have been there and done it. The Exit talks to operators who have bought and sold a business. You'll learn how they did it, why they did it, and get exposure to the world of exits, a world occupied by a small few, but accessible to many.To listen to the podcast or get daily listing updates, click on https://flippa.com/the-exit-podcast/

Eric Bandholz talks about Beardbrand, presenting on Shark Tank, politics, and how he changed up his hiring to create a more independent and creative work environment. Eric also shares some of his thoughts on stoicism along with some of the struggles both he and his wife have faced in pursuit of building a family. This episode is a great look at creating positive work culture and building a life you can be proud to live.    Highlighted Quotes “Stoic Mindset” I tend to have a Buddhist-Stoic mindset for a lot of things... there is going to be suffering it's just part of humanity and it is part of life.one of the things that I have seen is that you are dealt the problems that you are capable of solving them. If you aren't capable of solving them, you wouldn't have them. That has encouraged me to find bigger problems because I feel that I can certainly solve bigger problems that I'm currently facing right now. You should want to have those problems and those challenges in life. “Core Values” We look at our core values as a triangle of Freedom, Honor and Trust. what happens is if you have too much freedom… then what happens is your trust and your hunger go down. So it's something that you want to have balanced... again perhaps too much hunger or too much drive and you end up working 80 hours a week and you are losing your freedom, and maybe you are eroding trust as well as you walk over your teammates so like balance has been a big thing for us.
