Bonus Episode #64 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bryan reviews God of War: Sons of Sparta, the surprise same-day release from Sony's February 2026 State of Play, a 2D Metroidvania prequel developed by Mega Cat Studios in collaboration with Santa Monica Studio. Set during Kratos' youth at the Spartan Agoge, the game follows a teenage Kratos and his brother Deimos as they venture beyond Sparta's walls on a mission rooted in duty, brotherhood, and survival. This Musical Review covers all dimensions of the experience, from the Metroidvania exploration loop, spear-and-shield combat system, and level design, to the story's emotional highs and lows, the pixel art presentation, and the technical rough edges that accumulate over the course of the campaign. We also dedicate time to Bear McCreary's remarkable original score, which blends chiptune sensibility with sweeping orchestral and choral arrangements to create one of the most distinctive soundscapes in the franchise's twenty-year history. Email the show at bgmaniapodcast@gmail.com with requests for upcoming episodes, questions, feedback, comments, concerns, or any other thoughts you'd like to share! Special thanks to our Executive Producers: Jexak, Xancu, Jeff, & Mike. In this episode of our weekly gaming podcast, Game Informer's Kyle Hilliard reviews God of War: Sons of Sparta, a new 2D metroidvania that Mega Cat Studios and Sony Santa Monica released during last week's PlayStation State of Play. Unfortunately, it's an underwhelming title. Kyle then explains why he spent $99 USD on Nintendo's Virtual Boy rerelease and what it's like experiencing the headset's strange catalog of games on the Switch 2.Later in the show, Eric Van Allen dives into Paranormasight: The Mermaid's Curse, a mystery adventure about a cursed Japanese seaside town that has impressed him. Finally, Alex Van Aken shares his thoughts on the rock-climbing simulator Cairn and how it's an excellent example of how games can uniquely tell stories. The Game Informer Show is a weekly podcast covering the video game industry. Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KThe latest segment of Notorious Mass Effect dives deep into God of War: Sons of Sparta, the surprise shadow-dropped PS5 exclusive from Santa Monica Studio and Mega Cat Studios. Released February 12, 2026, for $29.99, this 2D action-platformer—marketed as a Metroidvania—explores young Kratos during his Spartan Agoge training alongside brother Deimos, framed by adult Kratos (voiced by T.C. Carson) narrating to Calliope.Analytic Dreamz breaks down the core premise, gameplay execution, and franchise implications. The ~12-hour experience features light/heavy attacks, parry/dodge mechanics, color-coded enemy attacks, and "Gifts from Olympus" abilities like double jump and slingshot. Exploration includes interconnected maps, collectibles (owls, lore, olive trees), optional bosses, and upgrades via blood orbs.Critically, it holds a 69 Metacritic / 70 OpenCritic score—the lowest in the 20+ year God of War series—praised for brotherhood themes and retro style but criticized for stiff combat lacking impact, shallow Metroidvania elements, limited backtracking encouragement, repetitive story loops, and basic progression. Visuals sit between retro and modern but lack cinematic scale. The co-op controversy—initial listings implied full campaign support, but it's limited to post-game challenge mode—sparked confusion and refund requests.User scores sit higher at 8.2, with some quick Platinum achievements. Analytic Dreamz examines if this low-risk spin-off serves as franchise maintenance amid Greek trilogy remake news, or falls short of mainline prestige.Tune in as Analytic Dreamz delivers a concise, no-holds-barred breakdown of this polarizing entry—serviceable but forgettable for many, yet a nostalgic Greek-era return for fans.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/exclusive-contentPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Frank is joined by Guest Host Kate Willaert, author, historian, and YouTuber, to interview Jeremy Parish, media curator at Limited Run Games, author, YouTuber, and podcaster. Jeremy has a series of “Works” books and videos as part of a massive project to chronologize the 8-bit era. Jeremy's work covers various consoles, including Game Boy, NES, SG-1000, and Famicom, highlighting the significance of third-party developers and the impact of the NES on game design. We share a universal complaint of the challenges of maintaining a comprehensive and accurate release list for systems like the SG-1000 and the importance of community feedback in refining our work. The conversation touches on the potential for both future projects and genre-specific series, such as Metroidvania and Shmup games. You can listen to the Video Game History Hour every other Wednesday on Patreon (one day early at the $5 tier and above), on Spotify, or on our website.Mentioned in the show: Jaws Retro Edition (pre-orders closed): https://limitedrungames.com/collections/all-in-production/products/jaws-retro-edition-bigger-boat-edition-switch-ps5?_pos=3&_sid=a0a6bd1b1&_ss=r See more from Jeremy Parish:Bluesky: @jparish.bsky.social Youtube: @JeremyParish Podcast: patreon.com/retronauts Website: limitedrungames.com See more from Kate Willaert:Bluesky: @katewillaert.bsky.socialYouTube: /a critical hitWebsite: acriticalhit.comPatreon: /acriticalhitVideo Game History Foundation:Email: podcast@gamehistory.orgWebsite: gamehistory.orgSupport us on Patreon: /gamehistoryorg

Bonus Episode #62 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bryan explores The Vessel, a massive derelict spaceship where nature and technology collide in MIO: Memories in Orbit, the atmospheric Metroidvania from French indie studio Douze Dixièmes. As the nimble android MIO, players traverse overgrown corridors and industrial ruins to restore the ship's lost memories before total shutdown. This Musical Review dives into the game's remarkable 75-track soundtrack composed by Nicolas Gueguen. We explore how its ambient textures, layered synths, and live choir vocals create a haunting atmosphere that guides emotion and discovery throughout the journey. Bryan also discusses the fluid traversal mechanics, environmental storytelling, and memorable boss encounters that make MIO a standout example of how sound design can elevate exploration into something deeply personal and meaningful. Vragen of opmerkingen? Mail ons! Op allinthegame@bnr.nl Over All in the GameAll in the Game is de podcast over games voor iedereen. Het komt allemaal aan bod in All in the Game. Riddle me this, Shepard. This week, we're taking you do the late 2000s with a pair of Unreal Engine 3 classics. First up, Mass Effect, BioWare's groundbreaking sci-fi epic. It's a game with its fair share of issues, but narrative stands strong despite some of the gameplay archaisms. After that, Batman: Arkham Asylum takes us back to the glory days of superhero games as the Dark Knight Detective takes combat and stealth to a new level in a Metroidvania-styled island taken over by the Joker. We've also got some big frustrations with Ubisoft's game cancellations. Check out the show on BlueSky @MarkersOnTheMap.
On this week's Arcade, Uno stays locked into the endgame of Hades II, using downtime to tackle challenge runs and long-term upgrades. He also returns to Silent Hill f, gaining a new appreciation for its combat. Meanwhile, Chugs wraps up a packed slate of games, finishing Pokémon Legends Z-A and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. He also braves the psychological horror of Broken Lore: Unfollow and starts exploring the beautiful Metroidvania world of MIO: Memories in Orbit. In gaming news, the boys unpack everything shown during Xbox Developer Direct 2026, from Forza Horizon 6 to Game Freak's Beast of Reincarnation, Kiln and the long-awaited Fable reboot. They also talk about the latest Resident Evil Requiem showcase, Ubisoft canceling multiple projects including Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Street Fighter 6's Year 3 update featuring Kenny Omega's motion capture work as Alex.AEW SP Signature Edition: https://bit.ly/4srGApc Learn more about your ad choices. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
MIO: Memories in Orbit is competing in one of the most crowded genres in video games: the Metroidvania. Sorry, "Search Action Game." But trust us, this one's worth pulling from the pack. It blends the aesthetics of Nier, Citizen Sleeper, and oil paintings into something surprising and beautiful. Plus, the boys return to their Animal Crossing islands for the big Switch 2 update. Jason is having more family multiplayer sessions, Geoff finally gets his hands on the hottest racing game, and Chris finished up his "alluring" Metroidvania game. All that plus the Community weighs in on their GOTY picks.
This month, Darrin reviews Nier: Automata to find out if it's worth the hassle to get all 26 endings! Plus, Marvel: Cosmic Invasion and Metroid Prime 4! Meanwhile, Justin has a bad experience with digital spiders, and Chad tries out Gigasword, which just might have the slowest start to a Metroidvania in quite some time. Is Metroid Prime 4 Worth It for the Busy Gamer? Date: January 4, 2026 Podcast: Comm Talk by Geek Devotions Series: Everyday Gamer's Review Episode Summary Since 2007, gamers have been waiting for Metroid Prime 4. In this inaugural "Everyday Gamer Review," we look at this massive release from the perspective of a busy person with a day job and a backlog. We dive into the "beautiful visualizations" of the maps, the transition of the classic Metroidvania style into a first-person shooter, and whether the game's systems are too complicated for someone with only a few hours a week to play. We also tackle common community complaints regarding "bland" maps and the notorious scanning mechanic to see if they truly hinder the experience. Whether you are a die-hard fan or a casual player on the fence, this episode helps you decide if it's time to buy a new copy or start with Metroid Prime 1 Remastered instead. New Metroid week, everyone! This week, after a long, eighteen-year absence, the main Metroid Prime series returns with Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Retro Studios' return to Samus brings a strange world in Viewros, dominated by mysterious architecture and psychic powers. While we only touch on the very beginning of the game in this episode, it does deliver a powerful first impression. After that, we've begun a playthrough of Mario RPG's Switch remake, a game that once paved the way for many games, even to this day. After that, a quick look at Disney Illusion Island with all its ups and downs in being a Metroidvania with no combat. Check out the show on BlueSky @MarkersOnTheMap.
Alex and Luke Talk Hollow Knight and Silksong. The duo dive into a Metroidvania double‑header: first the seminal Hollow Knight (Team Cherry, 2017) and then its long‑awaited sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong (Team Cherry, 2025). We unpack the evolution of the form — bug‑infested kingdoms, needle‑wielding protagonists, soaring difficulty curves — while comparing how the first game laid the groundwork and Silksong raised the bar (and the anguish). Two games, one legacy, endless edge‑of‑your‑seat platforming. Hollow Knight earned a Metacritic score of 87 on PC and 90 on Switch. HowLongToBeat estimates place a standard full play‑through around 27 hours (main story) and up to ~65 hours for completionists. Silksong debuted with a Metacritic score of 91 (PC), classified under “universal acclaim”. Play time estimates suggest around 40‑45 hours for a meaningful run, with full completion pushing closer to 60 hours+. All in all, two hefty games that demand stamina, precision, and a willingness to die… a lot.Alex tackled Hollow Knight on his Nintendo Switch OLED, while Luke jumped into Silksong on his Steam Deck. Luke's no stranger to the first game — he's beaten Hollow Knight before — but neither of them rolled credits this time around. Along the way they compare platform experiences, controller feel, and how each game's difficulty and structure landed differently for each of them. This episode is unofficially brought to you in part by bein' fat bs who can't stop eating the rest of our Halloween candy.Send us a Text Message! TEXT US YOUR THOUGHTS!Hosts **Tony Sisk** and **Jaime G** kick off the "video game fall season" by discussing two major new releases: the highly anticipated indie sequel **Hollow Knight: Silksong** and the AAA looter-shooter **Borderlands 4**. Jaime shares his enthusiastic impressions of **Silksong**, highlighting its six-year development history, its origins as an intended DLC for *Hollow Knight* that grew into a full standalone sequel, and its budget price point of $20. He praises its Metroidvania genre execution, comparing its difficulty to *Elden Ring*, noting the lack of a ramp-up for new players, and describing the protagonist Hornet's high mobility and fluid movement as a major gameplay addition. Tony offers his initial thoughts on **Borderlands 4**, which he picked up as a physical copy on launch day. He states that the game is **"very good"** and already **"easily" better than Borderlands 3**. Tony praises the narrative, specifically highlighting the **memorable NPC characters** and the investment in their stories, which he feels was lacking in the previous installment. The hosts note the interesting contrast between the highly-rated, budget indie title (**Silksong**) and the large-scale AAA release (**Borderlands 4**), setting up a future discussion comparing their reception and player count, especially on platforms like Steam.---## Show Notes**Podcast Title:** Good Game Radio**Topics:** Video Game Fall Season Kickoff, *Hollow Knight: Silksong* Release and Review, *Borderlands 4* Initial Impressions.###

And Super Metroid is fucking special. Some will argue this isn't just the best game on the SNES, but the best Metroidvania game ever made. From the atmosphere, to the music, to the controls (minus the wall jumping), Super Metroid doesn't really have a weakness. It's unquestionably one of the biggest NES to SNES leaps ever, and as a listener pointed out, it not only launched the Metroidvania genre, but it still does Metroidvania-ing better than games that came after it. Masterpiece is all that applies here.My boy Dan from Dissect That Film returns to this week to talk about his favourite game of all time, Super Metroid. The first RTG dedicated to Super Metroid was fun, but the audio was bad, even by our low standards. So we're here to right that wrong and give Samus the episode she deserves. And before we hunt bounties, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week someone asks what, if any, success I've had advertising RTG on the internet.
