Episode 240 Welcome to another episode of The Observers Notebook, the official podcast of the Association of Lunar & Planetary Observers — where we explore the Solar System and beyond, from stargazing to science. I'm your host, Tim Robertson, and today we're diving into one of the most fascinating questions humanity has ever asked: Are we alone in the universe? For centuries, humans have looked up at the night sky and wondered if somewhere out there, another civilization is doing the exact same thing — looking back toward us. Today's guest is helping lead that search. Joining us is Franck Marchis — astronomer, planetary scientist, entrepreneur, and one of the leading voices in modern SETI research. Franck is known for his groundbreaking work in adaptive optics, asteroid systems, exoplanets, and the search for technosignatures — possible evidence of advanced civilizations elsewhere in the cosmos. He's also deeply involved in the future of astronomy through innovative telescope networks, citizen science, and the development of new observational technologies that could dramatically expand our ability to detect life beyond Earth. The Detroit Lions defense owned Day 2 of training camp. The offense intentionally worked short-game installs, which muted explosive plays, and Dan Campbell placed Detroit Lions offensive tackle Giovanni Manu on NFI with a previously undisclosed summer injury that will sideline him for a period of time. Why did the defense win Day 2? The defense executed, communicated and finished. Detroit Lions linebacker Derek Barnes baited and intercepted quarterback Jared Goff by bluffing a blitz then dropping into the passing lane. Detroit Lions edge rusher DJ Wonnum repeatedly disrupted plays, including blowing up a run and compressing the pocket even through contact. Detroit Lions defensive back Nick Whiteside stacked another strong day with a sharp pass breakup, which is how camp risers separate. As Jeff Risdon noted, the environment was quiet without fans, which made communication from leaders pop. Detroit Lions safety Chuck Clark directed traffic pre-snap and handled single-high responsibilities when Detroit worked base nickel. The overall theme was keep the ball in front, rally and end drives. How did the quarterbacks look in the short-game install? Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff was efficient within the plan, hitting timing throws and moving the ball underneath. Detroit Lions quarterback Teddy Bridgewater had an underwhelming day overall, including a hospital ball, but he also ripped a veteran hole shot to Detroit Lions wide receiver Greg Dortch between zone layers. Detroit Lions quarterback Luke Altmyer looked like a clean operator for the quick game, a baseline fit to run the Goff-style offense at a rudimentary level. The team period emphasized dink-and-dunk by design, not a lack of ambition. As Jeff Risdon emphasized, context matters in camp, because the offense was installing specific concepts rather than chasing chunk gains. What did Dan Campbell say about Giovanni Manu and early-camp sloppiness? Dan Campbell said Giovanni Manu is on NFI after disclosing a prior summer injury post-practice, and he will be out for a period of time. Campbell even floated twelve or fourteen weeks as placeholders, then stressed he did not know the exact timeline. Risdon read Campbell's tone as notably negative, and he added that you would struggle to find anyone in the media room who expects to see Manu in a Detroit uniform again. Campbell's on-field priorities remained clear, run the ball, stop the run and master situational football at the end of halves and games. With new voices, offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, passing game coordinator Mike Kafka and tight ends coach Steve Hatten, early misalignments happened, including a re-huddle on the second team-play, which is acceptable on Day 2 without pads. Who flashed and what were the standout moments? Detroit Lions wide receiver Cedric Wilson delivered the play of the day, a one-handed snag over Detroit Lions cornerback Khalil Dorsey with perfect timing and toe-tap control. Wonnum's surge included beating Detroit Lions offensive lineman Larry Borom when Borom checked in as an extra tackle, and walking back Detroit Lions offensive tackle Devin Cochran on a rush rep. Detroit Lions right tackle Blake Miller had a mixed day against top competition, which is part of the growth curve. On special teams, Dortch took the first return rep and looked decisive, while Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa also rotated in. Detroit Lions defensive end Peyton Turner did not practice with a minor back issue. Barnes stood out in drills and at the podium, a composed, articulate presence after practice. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #jaredgoff #teddybridgewater #lukealtmyer #giovannimanu #djwonnum #derekbarnes #khalildorsey #cedricwilson #gregdortch #chuckclark #peytonturner #amon-rast.brown #blakemiller #larryborom #mikekafka Learn more about your ad choices. What if the impossible is the best way to tell the truth?Speculative fiction isn't really about dragons, spaceships, magic or dystopias. At its heart, it's about asking one deceptively simple question:What if…?In this episode of Master Fiction Writing, Stuart Wakefield explores why writers have always imagined impossible worlds—and why the best speculative fiction reveals emotional truths that realism sometimes cannot.Rather than taking a tour through the different subgenres, this episode looks at speculative fiction through the lens of story craft. You'll discover why memorable speculative novels begin with human questions rather than clever ideas, how worldbuilding should grow naturally from theme, and why character, consequence and moral pressure matter far more than lore.Using examples from classics and contemporary works including Frankenstein, The Left Hand of Darkness, Never Let Me Go, The Lord of the Rings, Arrival, The Road and many others, Stuart explores what separates speculative fiction that merely entertains from speculative fiction that stays with readers long after the final page.Whether you're writing fantasy, science fiction, horror, alternate history, magical realism or something that refuses to fit neatly into a genre, this episode will help you create stories that are emotionally truthful, structurally compelling and impossible to forget. Why the real power of speculative fiction lies in the Worldshift—the one impossible change that reshapes everything else. How to develop stronger “What if?” premises. Why worldbuilding should be a consequence of theme, not the starting point. How to build speculative worlds that naturally generate conflict. Why readers remember characters and consequences, not encyclopaedic lore.Common mistakes speculative writers make—and how to avoid them.Practical exercises you can apply to your own novel immediately.Download the free Writer's Notebook that accompanies this episode:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zrvW4E3kAb3xVmJEitvEgiGLetwhV2fC/view?usp=sharingFor more writing resources, articles and coaching, visit:https://www.thebookcoach.coIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider following Master Fiction Writing and leaving a rating or review. Episode 239 What makes a telescope truly exceptional? Is it aperture… optics… craftsmanship… or something more? And in a time when technology is rapidly changing how we explore the night sky—from smart telescopes to AI-assisted imaging—where does the future of amateur astronomy really lie? Today, we're going to explore that question with someone who has spent decades building precision instruments for observers who demand the very best. I'm excited to welcome Vic Maris, founder of Stellarvue—a company well known in the amateur astronomy community for producing high-quality refractors and precision optical systems. Vic has built Stellarvue around a philosophy that emphasizes craftsmanship, rigorous optical testing, and delivering instruments that meet the expectations of serious observers and imagers alike. In this episode, we're going to talk about the story behind Stellarvue, what it takes to build premium telescopes in today's market, and how advances in technology are reshaping the way we observe the night sky. We'll also get Vic's perspective on where amateur astronomy is headed—what excites him, what concerns him, and what advice he has for the next generation of observers. So sit back, relax, and enjoy my conversation with Vic Maris. Calvin #1: The trusted-publishing debate: how to do it right vs. why you shouldn't trust it https://snarky.ca/how-to-publish-to-pypi-using-github-actions-securely/ (Brett Cannon) and https://blog.yossarian.net/2026/07/07/You-shouldnt-trust-trusted-publishing (William Woodruff) Trusted Publishing (PyPI's OIDC-based auth scheme, also now used by npm, RubyGems, crates.io, NuGet) replaces long-lived API tokens with short-lived, auto-scoped credentials tied to CI/CD machine identity. Yossarian's post: it's purely an authentication mechanism between a machine identity and a package — it says nothing about package safety or quality. PyPI deliberately avoids any "verified/trusted" badge for it, unlike its verified-URL checkmarks. Same logic applies to PyPI attestations: anyone can sign with any machine identity they control, so an attestation's presence isn't itself a trust signal. Bottom line from that post: don't confuse "trusted" (machine-to-machine) with "trustworthy" (human judgment about the package). Snarky.ca's companion piece is more practical: given GitHub Actions compromises in the news, the real fix is 3 concrete steps — run zizmor to lock down workflow permissions/checkout credentials and pin actions to commit hashes, adopt Trusted Publishing to eliminate stored PyPI tokens, and require manual approval via a GitHub environment before any publish job runs. Takeaway for listeners: Trusted Publishing is good hygiene for how you authenticate to PyPI, but it's not a substitute for securing your CI pipeline itself — or for actually vetting the packages you install. Michael #2: JupyterLab 4.6 and Notebook 7.6 are out! Michał Krassowski's rundown - a chunky minor release: 68 features, 97 bug fixes, 95 contributors, one of the biggest ever. Scratchpad console (Notebook 7.6 headliner) - a console next to your notebook sharing its kernel, for throwaway experiments. Ctrl+B. Jump to last-edited cell - new commands hop through recently edited cells. File browser glow-up - Date Created column, editable breadcrumbs with Tab-completion, and Open in Terminal. Debugger - sources open in the main area, floating step/continue overlay, live kernel-sources filter. Custom layouts (Lab) - activity bar top/bottom, draggable panels, four-way tab splits, per-panel Ctrl+scroll zoom. ~5x faster extension builds - webpack → Rspack, and jupyter-builder means no full Lab install needed to build extensions. Keyboard/a11y - add shortcuts from the UI (no JSON), Find & Replace in Edit menu (Ctrl+H). Calvin #3: Tau – new small, readable terminal coding agent Tau – new small, readable terminal coding agent (Python 3.12+), built as both a working tool and a teaching project for how coding agents work under the hood Install via uv tool install tau-ai, pipx, or pip; ships a tau CLI Three-layer architecture: tau_ai (provider-neutral model layer) → tau_agent (reusable "brain": messages, tools, events, loop) → tau_coding (CLI/TUI, file & shell tools, sessions) Supports OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenAI Codex, OpenRouter, Hugging Face, and custom/local OpenAI-compatible endpoints Built-in tools (read/write/edit/bash), durable JSONL sessions with resume/branching, project instructions via AGENTS.md, and context compaction Core harness is UI-agnostic — same brain can power the TUI, print mode, or a custom frontend — usable as a standalone library too Michael #4: Django Tasks and Django 6.1 Django 6.0 finally ships first-party background tasks (django.tasks) - out of Jake Howard's DEP 14, accepted May 2024, after two decades of everyone bolting on Celery/RQ/Huey. It's an API, not a worker. Django handles task definition, validation, queuing, and result storage - it does not execute them. You bring the backend. The default backend traps people. ImmediateBackend runs tasks inline on the request thread and blocks until done - so out of the box .enqueue() backgrounds nothing (a 5-second task means a 5-second response). The other built-in, DummyBackend, runs nothing at all. Both are dev/test only. Nice API otherwise: slap @task on a function, call .enqueue(), get back a TaskResult you look up later by id - with async twins like aenqueue(). Gotcha: args and return values must survive a JSON round-trip, so a tuple sneakily comes back as a list. The community local backend to know: django-tasks-local by Chris Beaven (SmileyChris). A ThreadPoolExecutor backend that gives real background threads with zero infrastructure - no Redis, no Celery, no database - plus a ProcessPoolBackend for CPU-bound work → github.com/lincolnloop/django-tasks-local Its catch: results live in memory, so pending tasks vanish on restart or deploy. Great for dev and low-traffic production; for persistence, drop to Jake Howard's django-tasks (DatabaseBackend + worker command). Extras Calvin: Fixing the dictionary with Python 3.14 — Hugo van Kemenade stumbled on - and got fixed - a markup bug in the OED's own citation of a 1706 use of the pi symbol. Michael: Bunny DNS is now free Jokes: What's the object-oriented way to become wealthy? Inheritance To understand what recursion is... You must first understand what recursion is 3 SQL statements walk into a NoSQL bar. Soon, they walk out They couldn't find a table.

What separates an activist who changes the world… from one who simply makes noise? Israeli-American lawyer, philanthropist, and disability rights advocate Jay Ruderman argues that lasting change isn't about shouting the loudest. It's about knowing when to provoke, when to persuade, and how to build unlikely alliances. Drawing on decades of experience—from transforming disability representation in Hollywood to navigating today's deeply polarized political landscape—Ruderman shares why winning hearts and minds is often far more powerful than winning an argument. His book Find Your Fight: Make Your Voice Heard for the Causes that Matter Most. Ruderman builds on his long years as an activist for disability inclusion to offer essential tips for the budding (and the experienced) activist.

In this episode of The Leader's Notebook (Ep. 319), I take you into one of the most joyful books in all of Scripture—the book of Philippians. Written from a Roman prison, Paul's letter overflows with gratitude, faith, and rejoicing. Together we revisit the miraculous beginnings of the church at Philippi, from Lydia's conversion to the Philippian jailer's salvation, and discover why Paul could write with such confidence that “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion” (Philippians 1:6). No matter your circumstances, God has not forgotten where your journey with Christ began. This message is a reminder that Christian joy is not rooted in comfort, success, or favorable conditions, but in the grace of God, the strength of Christian community, and the unshakable reality of Jesus Christ. If you need encouragement, hope, and a renewed reason to rejoice, this message will help you remember what God has done and trust Him for what is yet to come.– Dr. Mark Rutland Chapters (00:00:03) - The Leaders Notebook(00:00:26) - Mark Rutland Announces Travis Rutland's New Podcast(00:01:58) - The Epistle to the Church at Philippi(00:11:30) - Paul the Apostle and the Jailer(00:18:20) - Paul's Joy in the Letter(00:20:47) - Paul the Apostle(00:25:28) - Paul the Apostle: Rejoice in the Lord always(00:31:27) - Leader's Notebook

NPR often relies on reporters going into dangerous places to get the story. It can mean covering a war, natural catastrophes, or highly contagious, deadly diseases — like the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that has killed hundreds of people so far.For this week's Reporter's Notebook, we hear from Emmet Livingstone about how he balances the risk of reporting in an area where Ebola is spreading. For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org. Email us at considerthis@npr.org.This episode was produced by Gabriel Sanchez. Criminal Mischief The Murder of a CEO: The Luigi Mangione Case On the morning of December 4, 2024, the chief executive officer of one of America's largest health insurance companies stepped onto a Manhattan sidewalk and was gunned down in what authorities would later describe as a targeted assassination. The shooting shocked the nation. The victim was a powerful healthcare executive whose company had become a lightning rod for criticism from patients, doctors, and advocacy groups frustrated by denied claims, rising costs, and the complexities of the American healthcare system. But what happened next stunned investigators even more. As police launched a nationwide manhunt, the alleged gunman—26-year-old Luigi Mangione—quickly became one of the most polarizing criminal suspects in recent memory. While law enforcement pursued a murder investigation, a growing online movement began portraying Mangione as something entirely different: a folk hero, an avenger, even a symbol of public anger toward an industry many Americans believe has failed them. This week on Criminal Mischief, Carolyn Ossorio examines the crime that ignited a national debate. Who was Luigi Mangione? What led authorities to identify him as the prime suspect? What evidence connected him to the shooting? And why did a murder case become a cultural flashpoint that exposed deep divisions in the way Americans view healthcare, corporate power, and justice itself? Through court documents, investigative reporting, and the facts established by law enforcement, Carolyn separates the online mythology from the actual case, tracing the events leading up to the shooting, the nationwide search that followed, and the legal battle that continues to unfold. This is not just the story of a homicide. It's the story of a country arguing with itself. Because sometimes the most revealing criminal cases aren't the ones that unite us in outrage. They're the ones that force us to confront why some people feel outrage in the first place. Have thoughts on this case? Email us at mailto:info@eviocreative.com. Reporting assignments can often lead to unexpected joys and lessons. That was the case when NPR's Natalie Escobar and Ava Berger were sent on the road to tag along with three teenage boys competing in the World Series of Birding. The teens had 24 hours to crisscross New Jersey and tally up the number of bird species they spotted. For this week's Reporter's Notebook we hear from Escobar and Berger about how the assignment was both challenging and illuminating.See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.NPR Privacy Policy
