Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on BioShock. We talk a lot about the surprise of the scene of Ryan, and some mechanical and production aspects we haven't had a chance to talk about yet. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Up to Apollo Square! Issues covered: where the game should (?) have ended, playing golf with your dad, finding a way to incorporate a power station, Ryan the abstract monster vs Ryan the concrete monster, changing the lens you view Ryan through, rationalizing one's choices, the red yarn board, forcing the player to see a scene the way they want you to, egocentric Ryan and seeing oneself as a tragic hero, every villain as the hero of his own story, mythological framing, other ways you could tackle player agency here, "The Cake Is A Lie," the Irish charmer becoming the Irish thug, using Atlas to puff out Ryan as a monster, the many many layers of references and archetypes, all that matters to me is me and all that matters to you is you, killing people who are much like you, differentiating the Little Sisters in the Tenenbaum section, the mind-control plasmid, walking a tightrope with difficulty and challenge, mixing up your plasmids, the simplicity of upgrades, some numbers change or more things can be impacted, not feeling the power of tonics and plasmids, lack of builds, the limited number of axes across which powers and weapons apply, compressing the depth, modularity in world construction, solid art direction, regularity in the built world, kit-bashing, a couple of kind reviews, dealing with issues of preservation, what gets lost, wanting leaders to do more, having let's plays for reference. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: System Shock 2, Snowpiercer, Portal, Walt Disney, Wide World of Disney, PIXAR, Studio Ghibli, William Hearst, Citizen Kane, Modern Warfare 2, The Last of Us 2, Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima, Arkham City/Arkham Knight, Robert De Niro, The Irishman, Ken Levine, Village of the Damned, Metroid, Ratchet & Clank, Unreal, Gears of War, Skyrim, Fallout (series), Jarkko S., Baldur's Gate, Diablo, Final Fantasy VI, Metal Gear Solid, Chris_3646363, Ocarina of Time, mysterydip, Phil Spencer, Vectrex, Double Fine, Square Enix, The Matrix (series/Online), The Wachowskis, Meridian 59, Andrew and Chris Kirmse, Control, The Lost Room, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Xbox boss Phil Spencer reaffirms his commitment to supporting the Japanese game market and Japanese-developed games. We discuss what needs to happen and what we'd like to see. Plus: our impressions of Big Team Battle in Halo Infinite's second weekend of multiplayer test flight #2, and more!
We start off with some viewer advice regarding utilizing the Authy Authenticator app instead of Google Authenticator for your Nintendo Online account. We also have a followup regarding the peer-to-peer networking discussion from the previous episode, along with a list of AAA titles utilizing that method of online gaming. I finally built the gaming PC I started buying parts for a year ago! And it all worked on first boot! But, building a PC has changed a lot since I last did it in 2012. Twitch gets itself another music deal with Warner Music Group - but it's only a benefit to Twitch and WMG artists, not for game streamers who want to play WMG music in the background. Phil Spencer says that Xbox shortages will continue until 2022 thanks to a perfect storm of bad events. I continue talking about my pinball journey with the new code release for The Mandalorian, and how it showed me that a portion of my machine is not working. Then we talk to OLR about New World and the massive queues that streamers are seeing. This is going to be the last episode for an undetermined amount of time. I go into surgery on October 4th that will affect my ability to perform to my satisfaction. Best case scenario is that the show will be back on the air on October 17th - however that is all dependent on the recovery and rehab after the procedure. Keep checking the VOG Network Discord as well as my Twitter account @BobbyBlackwolf for updates. We'll see you when we see you.
Join the Bonus Accessory crew every Friday as they dive head first into all things Xbox, Xbox Game Pass, & PC gaming. Halo Infinite is in the midst of its second Technical Preview ahead of its December launch, and while most of the reception has been quite positive, some lingering questions still remain unanswered. This week, we dive into our thoughts on where the game stands currently, as we await the second half of the test that welcomes Big Team Battle this weekend. Does the new map, Behemoth, fit the mold of popular Halo maps? Are some issues simpler fixes like balancing, or could bigger issues arise down the road? We dig into it. Also, Xbox Game Pass could be at a staggering subscriber count, Xbox Series X and S may continue to have shortages for quite some time and much more, coming up on the newest episode of the Game Pass Gamecast! Be sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so you never miss a show when they drop every Friday morning!
Welcome back to Save Room Plays! Did you miss us? This week we're covering Sony's long-awaited PlayStation 2021 Showcase. It has been nearly 365 days since the last showcase, and aside from State of Plays and sweet nothings from Herman Hurst, not much has been known about what lies ahead for the future of PS5. That was until September 8th. Sony showed up for their 50 minute showcase and pulled out all the stops—that is once they got past that weird opening commercial (What was that even about? Play?). They delivered a showstopper full of second party titles, AA titles, and an impressive reveal of all new Sony first party games including Spider-Man 2, Marvel's Wolverine, and God of War: Ragnarok that fueled the fire of the console wars even more. While Sony brought the hype and basically asked Phil Spencer to hold their beer, it does leave a lot of questions still. Like will Sony ever grow to be more than a first party AAA machine? Will their ecosystem ever be consumer friendly? And does it even matter when you've got Wolverine and Spider-Man? Questions aside, we were thrilled by some of these reveals and remain excited for PS5's future ahead.

This week, Phil answered one of the most pressing questions since the reveal of the Steam Deck. Can it play Xbox games via the cloud? Now, we finally have our answer. Carrying it beyond that, Matty and Cognito dive into if this is enough or could Xbox go make their own handheld with Nintendo and Valve successfully entering the space? Beyond that, the head of Xbox took an interview with GamesRadar where they honed in on the fine craft of PlayStation and their excellent open world titles. His reply to the status of those games was telling of where the company is heading and the diverse portfolio they aim to bring. Drumming up more Xbox drama, Outriders developer People Can Fly listed quite the revelation on their investor website. It appears the game is not profitable! The question is, as a day one Xbox Game Pass game, is this the cause of the failure? The boys sink into the controversy which goes beyond Xbox! Such as with Boyfriend Dungeon, a game who's artistic interpretation of dark subject matter has been met with demands of censorship and opt-outs. A topic that has arguably brought more players to the game rather than pushing them away as intended. Rounding it, Matty and Cognito dive into Remedy's recent success, Rockstar's remasters, and the latest coming to Xbox Game Pass! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Call of Duty Vanguard Reveal Event will be happening inside a Call of Duty Warzone reveal this week. A Cyberpunk 2077 update is coming that will fix a variety of issues. Steam and Microsoft could end up working together due to Phil Spencer's recent commentary and visit with Valve. The Call of Duty Vanguard release date is still unknown, but a Call of Duty Vanguard reveal will take place this week. The Call of Duty Warzone reveal will be later this week inside the game. COD Warzone looks to be the center of the reveal for COD 2021. Many are thinking that Call of Duty 2021 will hopefully add Call of Duty anticheat. A Cyberpunk 2077 patch is on the horizon that will fix issues with the hud, GPS, map, and skill point resets. The Cyberpunk 2077 update 1.3 does not have a release date yet. Phil Spencer recently paid a visit to valve and had high praise for the Steam Deck xCloud compatibility for both Halo and Age of Empires.

On today's IGN The Fix: Games, Bloodborne modders have created a new mod for the FromSoftware game which will allow players to tackle Yharnam's many foes in a fully-fledged first-person mode. As reported by Eurogamer, modder Garden of Eyes created the first-person mod, which could change the way that players will interact with the game's gothic settings. The mod itself works by adding a new headpiece named the Great One Hat, which can be found at the start of the game. Once sported, the hat enables the player to traverse through the game from a first-person perspective, complete with visible weapons as you'd expect from a traditional FPS. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has managed to get his hands on a Steam Deck early, and says that playing Xbox games such as Halo through Xbox Cloud Gaming feels good on the handheld. In a tweet, Spencer confirmed that he'd spent the best part of a week with the upcoming portable PC before congratulating the Steam Deck team. "After having mine most of the week I can say it's a really nice device," he said. "Games with me on the go, screen size, controls [are] all great. Playing Halo and Age feels good, xCloud works well. Congrats SD team." An Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra-based tabletop RPG has now become so successful that creator Magpie Games has (for the meantime) run out of stretch goals on its Kickstarter campaign. Announced on the game's official Kickstarter page, backers of Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game recently broke through the campaign's $5 million USD funding target, which left Magpie Games in the fortunate but slightly awkward position of having run out of stretch goals to offer. The company is currently working to create further funding milestones for the game and has updated fans on this process. Stella has all that in your Daily Fix!

In today's episode, Phil Spencer throws some praise Sony's way by admitting Xbox was a little impressed with the PS5 DualSense controller. So impressed, in fact, that they asked some of their users in a survey if adaptive triggers was something they'd like to see in a future Xbox controller. So who knows? Maybe an Xbox Elite V3 controller could feature adaptive triggers, or motion control, or a speaker, or anything else! Personally, we'd like to see Sony take a page from Microsoft's playbook and let us customize the colors on our PS5 controllers. Please and thank you. In other news, the maker of an "undetectable" hack for Call of Duty: Warzone is complying with a request from Activision to take it down. The hack maker admitted that their goal was to make no game on console safe from hacking. For those trying to get some honest kills in Warzone, this is a victory. Let's hope this hacker turns his skills into something more helpful, like finding a way to squeeze Warzone down to something less than 150GB. And all this news is brought to you by PUBG MOBILE.
The Halo Infinite trailer brought a lot of excitement, and recently Phil Spencer said that this is not a make or break release for the franchise. Battlefield 6 Weather is apparently causing problems when being tested internally by the devs. And Kojima recently defended the Death Stranding Director's Cut due to more criticism about this type of release. With the Halo Infinite release date all but assured by Microsoft for the XBOX many are wondering if what we say in the Halo Infinite Multiplayer overview will deliver on all that it promised. The Battlefield 2042 multiplayer gameplay trailer showed off intense battles with lots of weather on the various Battlefield 6 maps. According to internal playtests the Battlefield 6 weather is causing some problems for game flow. Death Stranding Director's Cut was recently announced and looks to take the Death Stranding PS5 gameplay and improve it quite a bit. Kojima recently defended it saying it is more than just a Director's Cut and will feature more than just a Death Stranding ps5 4k 60fps version of the game. #haloinfinite #battlefield6 #gaming --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sntrpresents/support
Sony and Microsoft's joint mission to talk exclusively to British outlets continues, as Xbox head Phil Spencer and Xbox Studios head Matt Booty talk to the Guardian about the future of Microsoft's gaming platform. Geoff Keighley Show Notes On this episode, The Barretta Brothers welcome Video Game Innovator, Visionary, Muppet Lover, Geoff Keighley. Episode Outline: Gene surprises Billy with a puppet made by Jarrod Boutcher, based on Gene's “Billy Puppet” sketch. Geoff Keighley shows up and talks about: Growing up in Canada Visiting the set of Fraggle Rock His parents, who work in film/TV production, including producing some of the first IMAX movies. His childhood interest and involvement in video games Writing for video game magazines in his teens First TV video game hosting Talk about games as generational divides Origins of the Game Awards The format and success of The Game Awards Jackson Barretta and Ben Barretta join the conversation They discuss the Fortnite Pro Am Gaming as the new sport or concert event How did he meet Phil Spencer and Reggie Fils-Aimé First games Geoff played Plans for future Game Awards during the pandemic What does it take to become a gamer/twitch streamer? Where did the nickname Dorito Pope come from? ABOUT OUR GUEST: Geoff Keighley Keighley's foray into video game reporting and presentation had been through Cybermania '94: The Ultimate Games Awards, the first video game awards show broadcast on television. Keighley was fourteen at the time but was brought in to help write lines for the celebrity hosts to read. The show was not considered successful, aimed more for comedy than celebration, but from it, Keighley was inspired to develop some type of equivalent of the Academy Awards for video games in his career. In addition to GTTV, Keighley has been involved in many other video game-related projects on television. On Comcast's G4 network, he appeared as the network's lead anchor for its E3 press conference coverage, interviewing CEOs from companies like Sony and Electronic Arts. For MTV he created the concept and produced (with LivePlanet) "Gears of War: Race to E3" and "Gears of War: Race to Launch", two specials that took viewers inside the development of the hit Xbox 360 game from Microsoft. And in 2007, the Discovery Channel aired a five-hour documentary on releases including those of such companies as World of Wonder Productions, based on a treatment by Keighley, who also served as consulting producer. Geoff has also hosted and co-produced a number of video game launch specials for Spike TV, including "Madden NFL 08 Kickoff" featuring a performance by Ozzy Osbourne and "Halo 3: Launched!" featuring a performance by Linkin Park. He was also interviewed on what became a controversial Fox News' segment on Mass Effect and was later praised by gamers online for being the only one on the show who had actually played the game. Keighley was invited by the producers of Spike's Video Game Awards program to help with the programming from 2006 onward. In 2013, Spike changed the format of the show and rebranded the awards as the VGX Awards. To Keighley, the format became more commercial and promotional rather than a celebration of video game achievements, and subsequently left the show. Through 2014, he funded his own efforts to put together a new awards show, gaining the support of Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo as well as major publications and industry leaders. Keighley thus established The Game Awards which were first presented in December 2014, and which Keighley remains the primary host. Keighley is known for writing reviews and previews and going behind the scenes of the game industry for in-depth business profiles and lengthy feature pieces. While initially a writer at GameSpot from around 1998, Keighley wrote the site's column "Behind the Games". This column evolved into a series of articles "The Final Hours", where he has in-depth access to the various studios near the end of a development period and write in depth about the process as the game is nearing completion. In more recent years, these articles are released as mobile apps. In a July 2008 interview on The Jace Hall Show, Keighley spoke about the importance of this process, stating "There's such a lack of investigative journalism. I wish I had more time to do more, sort of, investigation. Really dig into some of these bigger issues, so I could look at like, the 'Red Ring of Death' problem. That's never really been properly reported about, like what really happens." However, he has faced criticism from some quarters for his willingness to positively present games to maintain exclusives, regardless of their actual quality, and to accept industry PR at face value in an October 2012 column published in Eurogamer. In December 2016, Keighley was picked as a judge for the Viveport Developer Awards (VDAs). Keighley had been a participant of E3, the annual video game trade show, since its start, and starting in E3 2017, Keighley had arranged and hosted the E3 Coliseum, a live-streaming event running over the course of E3 that brought in developers and publishers at E3 for interviews and other discussions. However, with the Entertainment Software Association making significant changes to the format of E3 2020 (prior to its cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic), Keighley stated he will not be organizing an E3 Coliseum event nor attending the show for the first time in 25 years. With E3's cancellation among other several other trade shows and events like Gamescom from the pandemic, Keighley worked with several major publishers and video game industry leaders to launch the Summer Game Fest from May to August 2020. During this period, Keighley will help developers and publishers present game announcements and other presentations, along with Steam and Xbox to provide game demos during this period.
