This week we talk about he DQ2 HD-2D Remake's post game, though not every bit of it because Square Enix still has a moratorium they've asked to be honored. There are a lot of cool things going on, and Austin says that the final boss doesn't have as much finality as you'd expect. So what waits you after the credits roll? Xbox's big bet for bringing PCs to the living room has officially been undercut. This week, Valve announced three (!) different pieces of hardware. First, there is the Steam Machine, which serves as the strongest competitor to consoles. While still very much a PC, the Steam Machine packs a lot of punch for a small device and could be a force if priced well. Second, a brand new VR headset in the Steam Frame. Despite Meta having massive first-party support, Valve has decided to challenge a space that many of us thought was finished growing. Third, and finally, is a Steam Controller. It's horrendous looking and makes the Duke look ergonomic. How does Valve's aggressive hardware plans disrupt Xbox and does any lingering appeal for the PC in the living room by Xbox remain? The Dukes unite and dive straight in. Epic vs Google stays stuck in limbo as the judge rejects the settlement, Duolingo's stock finally breaks its streak, and Square Enix joins the wave of Eastern publishers restructuring their way into a new identity. Get to the choppa, cause its time for a review of the newest Predator movie, Predator Badlands. It does not disappoint. Plus Valve doubles down on hardware, while the Super Mario Galaxy movie shows off its stars. Also, Sony has buyers remorse about Bungie, and somehow Amazon has forgotten that James Bond has had a history of reboots. and someone call MU/TH/UR because Alien Earth is coming back!

A wave of layoffs in Square Enix sparks worry, as the company enters the second year of its three year restructuring plan. We discuss the impact this will have on Square Enix as a whole, and if it will affect Final Fantasy XIV at all. The voice of G'raha Tia, Jonathan Bailey, was awarded the title "Sexiest Man Alive". We discuss if Jonathan Bailey is about to be replaced due to his likely high cost and limited schedule now. We also discuss mysteries in video games - and the risk of revealing too much. We also discuss SE's recent announcement about their push for AI, aiming to replace 70% of their QA teams with AI.► Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/SpeakersXIV ► Become a Speakers YT Member: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2BQVHKP5x3Cs62MB0DF5EQ/join ► Merchandise: https://speakersxiv-shop.fourthwall.com/ ► Follow us on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/speakersxiv.bsky.social ► Catch us LIVE on Twitch: http://www.twitch.tv/SpeakersXIV ► Speakers Discord: https://discord.gg/ATBUccS

On today's Geek Freaks Headlines, we break down Square Enix's plan to have generative AI handle about 70% of quality assurance and debugging by the end of 2027, announced the same day employees in the company's Western business were told to expect layoffs across departments. We talk through what AI could realistically cover in testing, where it's likely to fail without human oversight, community reactions, and what this might mean for future Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts releases. This week on Critical Arcade, Nick and Dave dust off their swords, shine their armor, and set out on a nostalgic journey through the land of Alefgard in “Dragon Quest I & II Remake.” Square Enix has taken two of the most important JRPGs ever made and given them the full HD-2D treatment—complete with shimmering pixel art, dynamic lighting, and a soundtrack that will make even the slimes tear up a little. In Dragon Quest I, our brave hosts take on the role of the legendary descendant of Erdrick, tasked with defeating the evil Dragonlord and restoring peace to a world teetering on the edge of ruin. Along the way, they'll explore charming towns, uncover ancient secrets, and save a princess who's just a little too comfortable being kidnapped. Then, as the story seamlessly continues into Dragon Quest II, the stakes—and the party size—grow. Joined by three royal companions, the adventure expands across continents, oceans, and a world haunted by the legacy of the first hero. Monsters get tougher, castles get grander, and Dave's inventory management skills are tested like never before. Meanwhile, Nick can't stop humming the battle theme and pretending he's composing a full orchestra.Together, they'll uncover how these two stories intertwine, setting the foundation for decades of RPG storytelling. Will Dave survive the grind without rage-quitting? Will Nick finally admit that “random encounters” are not a personal attack? Tune in as they laugh, strategize, and occasionally cry their way through one of gaming's most legendary remakes—where every slime defeated brings them one step closer to destiny. Hosted on Acast. An old piece of games industry lore has recently reemerged, and it has people wondering about a tantalizing what-if. Back in 1999, The Matrix hit theaters, and the co-creators of the film happened to have been huge fans of Hideo Kojima, himself a year removed from the launch of Metal Gear Solid. And, as was reported at the time, there was potential that Konami would allow Kojima to pursue a licensed Matrix game post-MGS. A lot of new information has since emerged about what did and didn't happen here, and it makes for a great conversation starter. So let's lean into it, shall we? Our conclusion: Perhaps Kojima doing MGS2 instead of a Matrix game means he likely dodged a bullet (pardon the pun). Other news this week includes some quiet updates seemingly being made to PlayStation Portal's functionality, leaks from Bluepoint's cancelled God of War game, the most recent China Hero Project title in the form of Loulan: The Cursed Sand, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Following Freedom Wars, Patapon, and Everybody's Golf, what should Sony's and Bandai Namco's next collaborative re-release be? Do PC players have any reason to invest in the modern PlayStation ecosystem? Will the culture war consume Naughty Dog's Intergalactic? Does Colin type so fast that his keyboard smokes? Rick, Nomad (The Retro Wildlands) and Chris (Consoles and Stuff) charge into Chapter 3, which sees the game veer into a more traditional JRPG territory. Traditional isn't bad, though...although a few fights in this stretch of the game certainly are. More Lucavi, more Delita, more bad guys—this chapter has it all. Hope you love the show today.
