A Session with the Psychologist who Coined the phrase "Trump Anxiety Disorder," Dr. Jennifer Contarino Panning.
“This might be the last chance we have at saving our democracy.” ~Jennifer Contarino This year, the personal is political. In service to your emotional wellbeing and the health of our democracy, my guest Jennifer Conterino, Psy.D and I are going there. Yup, we’re exposing the damaging effects that an egregiously dangerous personality has had on our collective psyche not to mention the will of a nation in desperate need of healing. From years of petulant tweets to his most recent and most odious debate appearance, Trump anxiety disorder is real, y’all! Jennifer would know; she wrote a chapter on the subject for The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President. Diagnosing the president is, of course, irresponsible as neither of us is his therapist. But diagnosis for our purposes is irrelevant. We’re more concerned with how you’re doing. It’s no coincidence that being governed by this leader is akin to growing up under a narcissistic parent. Both scenarios leave their victims feeling unmoored and unsafe at best. At worst, these complex traumas repeat themselves, often manifesting as an inability to show outward empathy or inward compassion. With the current administration’s survival strategies literally killing BIPOC and conditioning white folks to stay forever silent, is 2020 the wake-up call our country needs? Examining the motivation behind a dangerous huckster’s rise to power is one step toward reasserting our agency. Asking ourselves how we want to show up in service to democracy is another. GUEST BIO: Jennifer Contarino, PsyD has been a Licensed Clinical Psychologist since 2004 and is the President of Mindful Psychology Associates, a group therapy practice in Evanston, IL. She is the author of the essay "Trump Anxiety Disorder" in the 2017 New York Times best selling book The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Mental Health Experts Assess a President. In addition to her clinical work and managing her practice, she writes, speaks, and presents about psychological topics such as sociopolitical stress and anxiety, coping with uncertainty, and emotional intelligence skills. It's no secret that many thousands of people are taking meds to deal with Trump Anxiety Disorder. But even more have recently jumped on the medication bandwagon to help cope with Mueller Disappoint Psychosis. It all stems from PC or political correctness. The inability to deal with other's disagreeable opinions which leads to spending long periods of time in safe spaces and generally withdrawing from reality, when it doesn't suit your beliefs. Yes it's a disease and one that we must desperately search to find a cure for. Millions of lives are hanging in the balance and perhaps civilization too.

Donald Trump, Fear and "Trump Anxiety Disorder". A response to a news article that recently came out saying US Therapists are seeing an Increase in Patients With 'Trump Anxiety Disorder' Symptoms include feeling as if the world is going to end, uncertainty about the political climate and feeling 'on edge' about Trumps decisions and even those who have supported the president have reported feeling isolated within social spaces or even within their own families. If you look at our 5 step framework for Anxiety, the steps go like this... 1. Trigger 2. Impact 3. Change 4. Cascade 5. Recovery Clearly this is a response to steps #2 and #3 (Impact and Change) and a response to the loss of control and volatility of the current political climate, as well as an excessive time spent on social media.

I don’t have a specific topic this week; after a few drinks and everything going to squat I just wanted to let you in on the possibility the podcast being changed to a new post time. I’m shooting for Tuesday if all goes as planned. Probably won’t but that’s the plan. I rant on a few things and whine about the hold up. I also attempt to fill you in on a new thing called “Trump Anxiety Disorder” from a story I read recently. It’s as ridiculous as it sounds. Throw the questions, suggestions, comments, complaints or insults my way so I can help you get on with a better life.

MASS SNOWFLAKE MELT HAPPENING... Counselors Claim Clients Face Trump Anxiety: ‘Fear of the World Ending’ 'Trump Anxiety Disorder' Increasing, Therapists Say... "The number of Americans suffering from "Trump Anxiety Disorder," a term coined by psychiatrists in 2007, is on the rise, claims CBC News. "There is a fear of the world ending," Elisabeth LaMotte, the founder of the D.C. Counselling and Psychotherapy Center, is quoted as saying. "It's very disorienting and constantly unsettling." President Donald Trump's supporters are also "feeling socially or familially isolated ... even if they don't support his tactics," LaMotte adds. Anxieties among Trump's detractors, she continues, resemble those found in patients who are brought up by a parent having a personality disorder, with "traits like grandiosity, excessive attention-seeking and severe lack of empathy."
