Most relationships involve some form of exchange, but many people overlook the transactional nature of paying to play in modern dating. Both traditional marriage and sugaring relationships exist on the same continuum in which resources are traded for sexual opportunity. In this episode, I discuss the two exceptions to this dynamic, where the relationship is primarily founded on something other than negotiated benefit. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. Your past can shape you, but it doesn't have to define you – especially when moving forward from pain is the path to self-realization. In this episode, I challenge the idea that suffering justifies withdrawal from life and argue that your past can be fuel for courage – as opposed to a prison of stagnation. Using both philosophy and psychology, I examine why identifying as a victim undermines resilience and stymies growth. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. The Devil's Castle: Nazi Eugenics, Euthanasia, and How Psychiatry's Troubled History Reverberates Today (Catapult, 2025) delves into the forgotten history of eugenics and links it to present-day psychiatry to explain how we as a culture continue to get mind care so wrong. In The Devil's Castle, Susanne Paola Antonetta weaves a haunting narrative that confronts the darkest chapters of psychiatric history while offering a bold vision for the future of mental health care. In 1939, the eugenics movement growing throughout the West did its worst in Nazi Germany. Through the Aktion T4 euthanasia program, five asylums and an abandoned jail were transformed into gas chambers. Tens of thousands of lives—predominantly adults with neuropsychiatric conditions—were extinguished in those structures, ultimately paving the way for the horrors of the Holocaust. Interlacing her experiences of psychosis with the complex history of psychiatry, Antonetta sheds light on the intersections of madness and societal perceptions of mental difference. She brings to life the stories of Paul Schreber and Dorothea Buck, two historical figures who act as models for mind care and acceptance. This gripping exploration traverses the spectrum of neurodiversity, from the devastating consequences of dehumanization to the transformative potential of understanding and acceptance. With The Devil's Castle, Antonetta not only unearths the failures of our past, but also envisions a more compassionate, enlightened approach to consciousness and mental health care. This is a story of tragedy, resilience, and hope—a rallying cry for change that dares to challenge the limits of how we define and support the human mind. Susanne Paola Antonetta is the author of The Devil's Castle: Eugenics, Nazi Euthanasia, and How Psychiatry's Troubled History Hurts Us Now. She is also the author of The Terrible Unlikelihood of Our Being Here, Make Me a Mother, Entangled Objects, Body Toxic, A Mind Apart, and four books of poetry. Everyone is obedient to something, and this obedience (properly applied) provides the necessary structure for self-improvement and functional relationships. In this episode, I present a model for women in which I argue that exercising good judgment with respect to what they choose to obey can strengthen their characters and improve their relationships. The alternative is obedience to self, which is a commitment to isolation and despair. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. The words we choose shape far more than conversation—they shape emotions, treatment, documentation, and even access to care.In this episode, Paul Wagner and Ray Christner explore how language influences the way clients experience their struggles and how clinicians document those experiences. They discuss the growing trend of using highly charged clinical terms like trauma, PTSD, narcissist, abuse, and hostage to describe everyday situations, and why that language can unintentionally increase emotional distress instead of helping people move forward. They also examine the opposite problem: clinicians softening documentation so much that important functional impairments disappear from reports, potentially affecting insurance coverage, disability determinations, educational services, and medical necessity. You'll learn practical strategies for challenging inflated language without invalidating clients, writing balanced documentation that captures both strengths and impairments, and using words that promote clarity, accuracy, and effective treatment.Whether you're a therapist, psychologist, counselor, educator, or simply interested in how language shapes mental health, this conversation offers practical insights you can use immediately.Brightminds AdPAR Ad This episode is brought to you by PAR.Explore the AI Report Writer here:https://www.parinc.com/product/ai-report-writer?utm_campaign=38111624-Psyched%20to%20Practice%202026&utm_source=P2P%20Podcast&utm_medium=Related%20PodcastsLearn more about the RIAS-2 NU here:https://www.parinc.com/product/groups/rias-rist-assessments?utm_campaign=38111624-Psyched%20to%20Practice%202026&utm_source=P2P%20Podcast&utm_medium=Related%20PodcastsTo hear more and stay up to date with Paul Wagner, MS, LPC and Ray Christner, Psy.D., NCSP, ABPP visit our website at: http://www.psychedtopractice.com “Be well, and stay psyched"
What does it take to keep a brilliant, unpredictable founder from burning down the very thing he built? In this episode, Cameron Herold sits down with Dr. Jeff McNairy, Chief Medical Officer and second in command at Rythmia, the only medically licensed ayahuasca facility in the world. Jeff gave up his psychology license to help build something the medical world said could not exist. He and founder Jerry Powell turned a jungle dive into a 245-person operation that has guided roughly 23,000 guests through a seven-day program. Jeff gets into the two-year fight for a medical license, the indigenous partnership, and the daily work of bridging a medical team with a shamanic one. Most of all, he explains the real job of a second-in-command to a wild founder: not running the strategy, but keeping the person steady enough to keep the company alive. Listen now.Timestamped Highlights[00:07:09] – What Rythmia actually is, and why it calls itself the only one of its kind in the world.[00:08:31] – How many guests have come through the doors, and what the week demands of you before you ever arrive.[00:10:36] – The medical reason a single “healthy” supplement can turn dangerous with ayahuasca.[00:12:42] – Where ayahuasca comes from, and the two plants that have to be combined to make it work.[00:13:56] – The three moments in life your body floods with DMT all on its own.[00:17:02] – How a rehab patient ended up becoming the founder of a company.[00:19:14] – The flaw Jeff kept seeing in Western medicine that sent him looking for something else.[00:21:10] – The addiction that nearly ended Jerry Powell before Rythmia ever existed.[00:24:37] – The decision to build something safer and cleaner than what they first found.[00:31:18] – The license Jeff knew he would have to surrender to go all in.[00:33:44] – How he convinced a conservative government to allow this on the books.[00:36:14] – The hunt for an indigenous lineage still living in the mountains.[00:40:53] – The hardest balancing act in running Rythmia today.[00:43:51] – Why the body absorbs stem cells differently after a week of ceremony.[00:44:37] – The community Jeff and Jerry are building beyond the resort walls.[00:47:37] – How to lead a visionary founder without choking the dragon.[00:51:52] – The advice Jeff would give his 21-year-old self.About the GuestDr. Jeff McNairy is a doctorate-level psychologist (Psy.D., M.P.H.) and the Chief Medical Officer and second-in-command at Rythmia, the only medically licensed ayahuasca facility in the world, located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. He spent decades in clinical care, from training at UCLA Medical Center to running a drug and alcohol rehab in Malibu, before co-building Rythmia with founder Jerry Powell. Jeff led the two-year effort to secure Rythmia's medical license with the Costa Rican Ministry of Health and now oversees its medical team of doctors, nurses, and a paramedic alongside the center's shamanic team, guiding the safety and clinical side of a program that has served guests from all over the world.

Many men are monomaniacally focused on getting an ex back. However, you should never restore a woman to her previous level of commitment after she has chosen to leave. Just like you can't step into the same river twice, you can't have the same relationship twice – even with the same person. Moving forward with clarity and self-respect often requires that you don't take her back into the role she once occupied. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. Some women are endurance hunters. They apply steady pressure over time until resistance collapses. In this episode, I discuss how incremental demands can shape power dynamics over time. The solution is simple, but counterintuitive: stop running from her and hold your ground. Draw a boundary and preserve your frame in the face of relationship pressure. The Captains' Quarters. Recent research has revealed significant gender differences with respect to tolerance for opposing viewpoints. In today's episode, I argue that male social norms around respect and restraint may play a crucial role in preserving open dialogue and intellectual diversity. As relational aggression increases, the risk of widespread self-censorship – the death of speech – becomes more pronounced. Smartwatches, fitness trackers, smart rings, and other wearable devices are collecting more health data than ever before—but what does that mean for mental health care?In this episode, Paul Wagner and Dr. Dan Florell explore the growing role of wearable technology in psychology. They discuss how devices can help monitor sleep, heart rate, stress, and activity levels, and how that information may support treatment for anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism, and other conditions. You'll also hear about emerging research showing how physiological changes may provide early warning signs before symptoms become more severe. The conversation also tackles the important questions every clinician should be asking. How accurate are these devices? When should therapists trust the data? What are the ethical concerns around privacy, AI, and client safety? And how can wearable technology become a useful clinical tool without replacing sound professional judgment?Whether you're a clinician curious about integrating technology into practice or someone interested in the future of mental health, this episode offers a balanced look at both the opportunities and the limitations of wearable technology.Brightminds AdPAR Ad This episode is brought to you by PAR.Explore the AI Report Writer here:https://www.parinc.com/product/ai-report-writer?utm_campaign=38111624-Psyched%20to%20Practice%202026&utm_source=P2P%20Podcast&utm_medium=Related%20PodcastsLearn more about the RIAS-2 NU here:https://www.parinc.com/product/groups/rias-rist-assessments?utm_campaign=38111624-Psyched%20to%20Practice%202026&utm_source=P2P%20Podcast&utm_medium=Related%20PodcastsTo hear more and stay up to date with Paul Wagner, MS, LPC and Ray Christner, Psy.D., NCSP, ABPP visit our website at: http://www.psychedtopractice.com “Be well, and stay psyched"

Why do so many romances involve betrayal? In this episode, I explain why love cheats as a narrative device to measure the depth and intensity of the romantic connection. This trope dates back to the very first romance, The song of Tristan and Iseult, in which love and duty are set on a tragic collision course. The more a character sacrifices, the more “real” their love appears to the audience. This is why this genre inadvertently glorifies the unfaithful spouse. The Captains' Quarters. Mark Edge reconnects with Carter Feldman, Founder and CEO of Psy Protocol, a new proof-of-work blockchain that promises to solve the impossible triangle of scalability, decentralization, and privacy all at once. Carter breaks down how Psy uses recursive zero-knowledge proofs to process transactions privately at internet scale, hitting 500,000 transactions per second on testnet before even launching publicly. They also explore how Psy allows users to prove compliance without revealing their identity, giving people privacy without compromise. Still in private beta, but a public launch is coming soon. A loving, stable, long-term relationship with a supportive and attractive woman is a million dollar dream. Both may be rare – but potentially not as rare as many might think. Like building wealth, creating a top-tier relationship requires patience, discipline, and the willingness to iterate on failure. If you want an extraordinary outcome, you must commit to extraordinary effort. The prize is rare but attainable – and it's worth the work for those willing to pay the price of admission. Boundaries are often presented as the answer to difficult relationships, workplace stress, and emotional well-being. But what happens when a boundary is actually avoidance in disguise? In this episode, Paul Wagner and Ray Christner explore the complicated space between protecting yourself and limiting your growth. They discuss how rigid boundaries can sometimes create new problems, why flexibility matters, and how anxiety can influence the decisions we make about work, relationships, and personal fulfillment. Through clinical examples and practical insights, they examine how to recognize when a boundary is serving you, when it may be holding you back, and how to make thoughtful decisions that align with your values. This conversation offers clinicians and listeners a fresh perspective on balancing self-protection, growth, and meaningful connection.Brightminds AdPAR Ad This episode is brought to you by PAR.Explore the AI Report Writer here:https://www.parinc.com/product/ai-report-writer?utm_campaign=38111624-Psyched%20to%20Practice%202026&utm_source=P2P%20Podcast&utm_medium=Related%20PodcastsLearn more about the RIAS-2 NU here:https://www.parinc.com/product/groups/rias-rist-assessments?utm_campaign=38111624-Psyched%20to%20Practice%202026&utm_source=P2P%20Podcast&utm_medium=Related%20PodcastsTo hear more and stay up to date with Paul Wagner, MS, LPC and Ray Christner, Psy.D., NCSP, ABPP visit our website at: http://www.psychedtopractice.com “Be well, and stay psyched"

Why are modern marriages breaking down? In this episode, I argue that one of the root causes is that both men and women are wanting a wife. The secretary problem reveals an enduring male preference: men will enter into relationships with women who help them. However, mismatched expectations around roles, reciprocity, and value exchange are frustrating the formation of relationships today. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. Contrary to popular belief, smart people are happy because they successfully apply their intelligence to the problem of their own happiness and fulfillment. Understanding intelligence as the ability to solve problems allows us to remove this construct from the academic realm. Is “just be yourself” good advice? In today's episode, I explain why authenticity only works after disciplined self-development has generated competence, confidence, and results. The truth is that becoming who you want to be generally requires first trying to be someone you're not. This is why “just be yourself” is both the best and worst advice: its relevance depends on which stage of becoming you are currently in. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. Dr. Mark Ettensohn explains why narcissistic personality disorder is often misunderstood online—and how complex trauma, shame, attachment wounds, and identity shape pathological narcissism. Narcissism has become a buzz word on social media. It has moved from a psychological understanding to a term that is used for blaming, scapegoating, and other emotionally charged narratives. This polarization has led to casting someone with narcissist traits as a villain who is intentionally cruel, manipulative, and beyond help. While those with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) can exhibit difficult or even harmful traits, social media has erased the distinction between mental illness and moral defect. One clinician cautions that this "narcisso-sphere" content contributes to the despair of an already vulnerable population and even suicidality among those who identify with the diagnosis. On this episode of Transforming Trauma, host Emilly Ruth welcomes Mark Ettensohn, Psy, D. Mark is the founder of Heal NPD, a clinical and educational platform focused on the understanding and treatment of narcissistic personality disorder. His work explores the developmental and relational roots of narcissism, including trauma, dissociation, and identity. Mark is also the author of Unmasking Narcissism: A Guide to Understanding the Narcissist in Your Life and shares widely followed educational content through his Heal NPD YouTube Channel. Transforming Trauma thanks Mark for sharing his expertise with our community. His empathetic approach to NPD invites curiosity over confrontation and genuine relational support over social media simplification. What if the smallest act of vulnerability… could completely change someone's life? In this deeply heartfelt solo episode, Darin explores a simple but radically transformative idea: go first. In a world where people are more digitally connected yet emotionally isolated than ever before, Darin breaks down the neuroscience, psychology, and human power behind making eye contact, giving genuine compliments, expressing appreciation, and risking authentic connection.
