Men set themselves up for disappointment when they think of the women in their lives as theirs. The truth is she ain't yours – she's yours for now. Using a viral real-world story, I examine hypergamy, loyalty, and the incentives that shape modern relationships. Ultimately, your relationship will last as long as the woman perceives you to be her best option. After that, she starts looking for the door. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. THIRTEEN psychiatric drugs in four months — that's what Lindsay Clancy was reportedly prescribed before she killed her three children.
Emotions are resources – and understanding that idea will change how you see attraction, dating, and long-term relationships. In this episode, I reveal what players understand, namely: emotional engagement is more valuable in cultivating attraction than money, gifts, or status. And this is also why genuine emotional connection is one of the hardest things to find. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. Today is a very special episode because I not only have the pleasure of hosting this podcast, but I am also the guest. Yes, that's right! Today, I'm opening up my heart and sharing my postpartum story with you once again; I last told my story way back in Episode 1 in June 2016. I want all of you who know me as Dr. Kat professionally to understand why I am so deeply passionate about the cause of maternal mental health. Join us now! Karen Kleiman is a well-known international maternal mental-health expert with over 35 years of experience. As an advocate and author of several groundbreaking books on postpartum depression and anxiety, her work has been featured on the internet and within the mental health community for decades. In 1988, Karen founded The Postpartum Stress Center, a treatment and training facility for prenatal and postpartum depression and anxiety. Katayune Kaeni, Psy.D. PMH-C, “Dr. Kat,” is a perinatal mental health-certified psychologist, author of The Pregnancy Workbook: Manage Anxiety and Worry with CBT and Mindfulness Techniques, and host of the Mom & Mind Podcast, covering personal stories and expert interviews related to perinatal mental health. She is also the board chair of Postpartum Support International, an organization whose mission is to promote awareness, prevention, and treatment of mental health issues related to childbearing in every country worldwide. Dr. Kat began specializing in perinatal mental health after her own experience with postpartum depression, anxiety, and OCD over 12 years ago. Dr. Kat continues to work virtually with clients across California. Show Highlights: How Dr. Kat's first pregnancy, even though planned and easy, resulted in a long, difficult labor that jump-started postpartum depression, anxiety, and OCD Why new moms struggle to know what's normal, not normal, too much, or not enough How feeling inadequate and incompetent as a new mom was part of Dr. Kat's anxiety and her battle with perfectionism How she felt alone and disconnected even from her husband, and NO ONE knew what was happening on the inside How scary intrusive thoughts put her in emotional turmoil Why shame and stigma are greater for mental health professionals–and will silence them at times How Dr. Kat carried on her therapy work with clients as the depression grew, making her feel trapped, exhausted, embarrassed, and confused How finally taking the PHQ-9 depression screening test for herself finally opened her eyes to the truth of what she was going through How she shut down even with her therapist and turned to a naturopathic physician, acupuncture, and other healing alternatives Why therapists MUST address the suffering client in front of them with curiosity and questions Why Dr. Kat is so deeply driven to help other moms break through and find the help and support to know that THEY WILL BE OK Resources: Connect with Karen: Website, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Book: Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts and LinkedIn Check out Karen Kleiman's other books: Website and Amazon. Citation: https://archive.org/details/homosexualitiessbellrich In this episode, I explore the idea that women are the brakes on both sexual behavior and social change – while risk-taking men drive progress. Drawing on evolutionary psychology, demographic data, and historical examples, I examine how different incentives shape male and female behavior. Ultimately, civilization depends on the balance of these opposing forces – acceleration and restraint – rather than either in isolation. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. Effort doesn't pay, results do – and the marketplace rewards the value you create rather than the effort you expend. In this episode, I explain why no one cares about your struggle unless it produces outcomes that genuinely benefit other people. Using the example of Lionel Messi, I demonstrate why mastery is measured by leverage, efficiency, and impact – not exertion. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. Love is hard because it demands sacrifice – not merely emotion, attraction, or a mutual exchange of value. And this is why it is rare: most people only love to the point where sacrifice becomes personally costly. Drawing on philosophy, psychology, and the life of Jesus, I challenge conventional ideas about love, boundaries, and selflessness. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. As a clinician working with the most vulnerable populations facing addiction, acute mental health issues, and trauma, he saw the same pattern repeat: Western medicine manages symptoms, but it doesn’t touch the root. Social media often makes it sound like there's only one answer to difficult family relationships: cut them off. But is that always the healthiest choice? In this episode, Paul Wagner and Dr. Ray Christner take a thoughtful look at family estrangement, toxic relationships, and the role of boundaries in protecting your well-being. They explore why the word “toxic” has become so common, how clinicians can avoid black-and-white thinking, and why firm but flexible boundaries often deserve consideration before permanent no-contact decisions. You'll hear practical ways to think through difficult family dynamics, the potential long-term costs of estrangement, situations where immediate separation is appropriate, and how therapists can support clients without steering them toward a predetermined outcome.Whether you're a mental health professional or someone navigating a challenging family relationship, this conversation offers a balanced, compassionate framework for making decisions that align with your values instead of reacting from the moment.Brightminds AdPAR Ad This episode is brought to you by PAR.Explore the AI Report Writer here:https://www.parinc.com/product/ai-report-writer?utm_campaign=38111624-Psyched%20to%20Practice%202026&utm_source=P2P%20Podcast&utm_medium=Related%20PodcastsLearn more about the RIAS-2 NU here:https://www.parinc.com/product/groups/rias-rist-assessments?utm_campaign=38111624-Psyched%20to%20Practice%202026&utm_source=P2P%20Podcast&utm_medium=Related%20PodcastsTo hear more and stay up to date with Paul Wagner, MS, LPC and Ray Christner, Psy.D., NCSP, ABPP visit our website at: http://www.psychedtopractice.com “Be well, and stay psyched"

Stress and the body Stress is part of everyday life. For many of us, it stems from work, family, relationships or simply trying to keep up with the demands of a busy world. In a study released last year by the American Psychological Association, 76% of adults said the future of the nation was a significant source of stress. The economy was close behind, at 75%. While some stress can help us stay focused and respond to challenges, chronic stress can take a serious toll on both our brains and our bodies. Tuesday on the "Sound of Ideas" guest hosted by Anna Huntsman, we'll start the hour by exploring the different types of stress, how they can affect our long-term health, and the warning signs that it may be time to seek help. Guests:- Adam Borland, Psy.D., Clinical Psychologist, Cleveland Clinic- Jasmeet Hayes, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, The Ohio State University 2026 Summer Interns As summer winds down, many college internships are also coming to a close. This year, Ideastream Public Media welcomed eight college interns and one high school student from University School to the Idea Center to develop their skills and gain hands-on experience across multiple departments, from news and marketing to classical music. To end the hour, we'll spend some time with a few of those interns to hear about the projects they worked on, how the experience has shaped their career goals and what they'll take away from their summer at Ideastream. Guests:- Alex Braun, Content Production Intern, Ideastream Public Media- Charlotte Jons, News Intern, Ideastream Public Media- Jillian Osredkar, Marketing Intern, Ideastream Public Media- Lucas Yang, Arts & Culture Intern, Ideastream Public Media
Looksmaxxing is the current viral trend in which men seek to improve their physical attractiveness using physical, cosmetic, and surgical procedures and techniques. In this episode, I explain why it's going viral, arguing that dating apps, social media, and changing relationship dynamics have transformed male incentives in the sexual marketplace. I'll discuss why male physical attractiveness now plays a larger role in modern dating than ever before – and where self-improvement crosses into obsession. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. In this episode, I explore an emergent phenomenon in the sexual marketplace I call “love mobs,” concentrations of female attraction on a small number of highly visible men. While these behaviors may make the admirers feel safe in their selection, they don't work for women seeking long-term relationships. Instead, women win when they utilize their independent judgment and recognize value before anyone else. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. AI is moving far beyond simple chatbots, and many mental health professionals are wondering what comes next.In the first episode of Beyond the Bot, Dan Florell and Adam Lockwood break down one of the fastest-growing areas of artificial intelligence: AI agents. They explain the difference between traditional AI chatbots and autonomous AI systems, where these tools can genuinely save clinicians time, and where they should never be used. The conversation covers practical examples for psychologists, counselors, school psychologists, and private practice owners, including research reviews, program evaluation, website analysis, marketing insights, and automating repetitive administrative work. Just as importantly, they discuss the ethical boundaries, including why protected health information should never be shared with consumer AI tools and why curiosity should come before rushing to adopt new technology.Whether you're just beginning to explore AI or already using ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, this episode offers practical guidance to help you understand where the technology is headed and how to prepare for it responsibly.Brightminds AdPAR Ad This episode is brought to you by PAR.Explore the AI Report Writer here:https://www.parinc.com/product/ai-report-writer?utm_campaign=38111624-Psyched%20to%20Practice%202026&utm_source=P2P%20Podcast&utm_medium=Related%20PodcastsLearn more about the RIAS-2 NU here:https://www.parinc.com/product/groups/rias-rist-assessments?utm_campaign=38111624-Psyched%20to%20Practice%202026&utm_source=P2P%20Podcast&utm_medium=Related%20PodcastsTo hear more and stay up to date with Paul Wagner, MS, LPC and Ray Christner, Psy.D., NCSP, ABPP visit our website at: http://www.psychedtopractice.com “Be well, and stay psyched"

Healing requires understanding and forgiveness – but it may also require forgetfulness. In this episode, I explain why successful people have a short memory and quickly re-engage after setbacks. Most therapists overlook one of the most powerful tools for supporting LGBTQ+ clients: the deep connection between minority stress, emotional validation, and joy. In this eye-opening conversation, Dr. Kiki Fehling—an expert in queer-affirmative DBT—shares how understanding the unique challenges faced by queer individuals can transform therapy from mere coping to building a genuinely fulfilling life.Discover how minority stress operates like chronic invalidation, fueling mental health difficulties like anxiety, depression, and trauma. Kiki reveals how DBT's biosocial model not only helps clients manage emotions but also reframes their experiences—empowering clients to see their identities not as sources of pathology but as sources of strength and joy. She explains how the foundational CBT skill of opposite action can combat shame and anxiety, leading clients to actively pursue moments of queer joy—whether through celebrations, community, or self-affirmation.You'll learn practical ways clinicians can avoid microaggressions—like making assumptions about pronouns or relationships—and how to repair ruptures that threaten trust. The episode emphasizes the importance of fostering therapy spaces where queer clients can fully embrace their identities, find happiness, and counteract societal stigma. Whether you're a mental health professional or a queer advocate, this conversation offers a clear map for integrating affirming practices that lead to genuine resilience and happiness.Filled with actionable exercises from Kiki's new workbook, along with her insights on cultural humility and self-work, this episode is a must-listen for anyone committed to supporting LGBTQ+ folks in living their fullest, happiest lives. Most relationships involve some form of exchange, but many people overlook the transactional nature of paying to play in modern dating. Both traditional marriage and sugaring relationships exist on the same continuum in which resources are traded for sexual opportunity. In this episode, I discuss the two exceptions to this dynamic, where the relationship is primarily founded on something other than negotiated benefit. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. Your past can shape you, but it doesn't have to define you – especially when moving forward from pain is the path to self-realization. In this episode, I challenge the idea that suffering justifies withdrawal from life and argue that your past can be fuel for courage – as opposed to a prison of stagnation. Using both philosophy and psychology, I examine why identifying as a victim undermines resilience and stymies growth. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. The Devil's Castle: Nazi Eugenics, Euthanasia, and How Psychiatry's Troubled History Reverberates Today (Catapult, 2025) delves into the forgotten history of eugenics and links it to present-day psychiatry to explain how we as a culture continue to get mind care so wrong. In The Devil's Castle, Susanne Paola Antonetta weaves a haunting narrative that confronts the darkest chapters of psychiatric history while offering a bold vision for the future of mental health care. In 1939, the eugenics movement growing throughout the West did its worst in Nazi Germany. Through the Aktion T4 euthanasia program, five asylums and an abandoned jail were transformed into gas chambers. Tens of thousands of lives—predominantly adults with neuropsychiatric conditions—were extinguished in those structures, ultimately paving the way for the horrors of the Holocaust. Interlacing her experiences of psychosis with the complex history of psychiatry, Antonetta sheds light on the intersections of madness and societal perceptions of mental difference. She brings to life the stories of Paul Schreber and Dorothea Buck, two historical figures who act as models for mind care and acceptance. This gripping exploration traverses the spectrum of neurodiversity, from the devastating consequences of dehumanization to the transformative potential of understanding and acceptance. With The Devil's Castle, Antonetta not only unearths the failures of our past, but also envisions a more compassionate, enlightened approach to consciousness and mental health care. This is a story of tragedy, resilience, and hope—a rallying cry for change that dares to challenge the limits of how we define and support the human mind. Susanne Paola Antonetta is the author of The Devil's Castle: Eugenics, Nazi Euthanasia, and How Psychiatry's Troubled History Hurts Us Now. She is also the author of The Terrible Unlikelihood of Our Being Here, Make Me a Mother, Entangled Objects, Body Toxic, A Mind Apart, and four books of poetry. Everyone is obedient to something, and this obedience (properly applied) provides the necessary structure for self-improvement and functional relationships. In this episode, I present a model for women in which I argue that exercising good judgment with respect to what they choose to obey can strengthen their characters and improve their relationships. The alternative is obedience to self, which is a commitment to isolation and despair. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. Clinical work with clients at high risk for suicide can make providers feel they are on a conveyor belt. One reason for this is that, sadly, so many people are struggling with crises and safety concerns; the demand for services seems never-ending. But another reason is more insidious: the risk of provider burnout. On today's episode, Dr. Erin Frick shares her perspective from working as a clinician and educator in the field of suicide prevention. Listen in as she encourages us to remain hopeful and connected with the “humanness” behind the crises. And if you have thoughts about how to “redefine the ‘wins' “ in this work, share them with us.Erin Frick, Psy.D., is a clinical psychologist and an Associate Director at the Consortium for Defense Psychology (CDP), located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.. At CDP, Dr. Frick leads the VA-Safeguard Suicide Prevention Project, where her team works to identify and implement best practices for suicide prevention among special veteran populations by leveraging evidence-based psychotherapies and VA standards of care. She also leads the DoD Child Collaboratory, a team dedicated to researching and implementing training and best practices for utilizing telehealth and digital tools to enhance healthcare and support for military youth and families.Resources mentioned in this episode: Therapeutic Risk Management Tool, available on the Rocky Mountain MIRECC website: https://www.mirecc.va.gov/visn19/trm/The benefits of mindfulness for stress reduction: Ameli R, Sinaii N, West CP, Luna MJ, Panahi S, Zoosman M, Rusch HL, Berger A. The words we choose shape far more than conversation—they shape emotions, treatment, documentation, and even access to care.In this episode, Paul Wagner and Ray Christner explore how language influences the way clients experience their struggles and how clinicians document those experiences. They discuss the growing trend of using highly charged clinical terms like trauma, PTSD, narcissist, abuse, and hostage to describe everyday situations, and why that language can unintentionally increase emotional distress instead of helping people move forward. They also examine the opposite problem: clinicians softening documentation so much that important functional impairments disappear from reports, potentially affecting insurance coverage, disability determinations, educational services, and medical necessity. You'll learn practical strategies for challenging inflated language without invalidating clients, writing balanced documentation that captures both strengths and impairments, and using words that promote clarity, accuracy, and effective treatment.Whether you're a therapist, psychologist, counselor, educator, or simply interested in how language shapes mental health, this conversation offers practical insights you can use immediately.Brightminds AdPAR Ad This episode is brought to you by PAR.Explore the AI Report Writer here:https://www.parinc.com/product/ai-report-writer?utm_campaign=38111624-Psyched%20to%20Practice%202026&utm_source=P2P%20Podcast&utm_medium=Related%20PodcastsLearn more about the RIAS-2 NU here:https://www.parinc.com/product/groups/rias-rist-assessments?utm_campaign=38111624-Psyched%20to%20Practice%202026&utm_source=P2P%20Podcast&utm_medium=Related%20PodcastsTo hear more and stay up to date with Paul Wagner, MS, LPC and Ray Christner, Psy.D., NCSP, ABPP visit our website at: http://www.psychedtopractice.com “Be well, and stay psyched"
What does it take to keep a brilliant, unpredictable founder from burning down the very thing he built? In this episode, Cameron Herold sits down with Dr. Jeff McNairy, Chief Medical Officer and second in command at Rythmia, the only medically licensed ayahuasca facility in the world. Jeff gave up his psychology license to help build something the medical world said could not exist. He and founder Jerry Powell turned a jungle dive into a 245-person operation that has guided roughly 23,000 guests through a seven-day program. Jeff gets into the two-year fight for a medical license, the indigenous partnership, and the daily work of bridging a medical team with a shamanic one. Most of all, he explains the real job of a second-in-command to a wild founder: not running the strategy, but keeping the person steady enough to keep the company alive. Listen now.Timestamped Highlights[00:07:09] – What Rythmia actually is, and why it calls itself the only one of its kind in the world.[00:08:31] – How many guests have come through the doors, and what the week demands of you before you ever arrive.[00:10:36] – The medical reason a single “healthy” supplement can turn dangerous with ayahuasca.[00:12:42] – Where ayahuasca comes from, and the two plants that have to be combined to make it work.[00:13:56] – The three moments in life your body floods with DMT all on its own.[00:17:02] – How a rehab patient ended up becoming the founder of a company.[00:19:14] – The flaw Jeff kept seeing in Western medicine that sent him looking for something else.[00:21:10] – The addiction that nearly ended Jerry Powell before Rythmia ever existed.[00:24:37] – The decision to build something safer and cleaner than what they first found.[00:31:18] – The license Jeff knew he would have to surrender to go all in.[00:33:44] – How he convinced a conservative government to allow this on the books.[00:36:14] – The hunt for an indigenous lineage still living in the mountains.[00:40:53] – The hardest balancing act in running Rythmia today.[00:43:51] – Why the body absorbs stem cells differently after a week of ceremony.[00:44:37] – The community Jeff and Jerry are building beyond the resort walls.[00:47:37] – How to lead a visionary founder without choking the dragon.[00:51:52] – The advice Jeff would give his 21-year-old self.About the GuestDr. Jeff McNairy is a doctorate-level psychologist (Psy.D., M.P.H.) and the Chief Medical Officer and second-in-command at Rythmia, the only medically licensed ayahuasca facility in the world, located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. He spent decades in clinical care, from training at UCLA Medical Center to running a drug and alcohol rehab in Malibu, before co-building Rythmia with founder Jerry Powell. Jeff led the two-year effort to secure Rythmia's medical license with the Costa Rican Ministry of Health and now oversees its medical team of doctors, nurses, and a paramedic alongside the center's shamanic team, guiding the safety and clinical side of a program that has served guests from all over the world.
Recently I was talking to my friend Dr. Chris Willard, and he mentioned a desire to have a conversation about the effects of patriarchy on men, and especially younger men, from both a psychological and spiritual perspective. Like myself, Chris is a progressive Buddhist dad, and like me, he cares about helping people develop a more emotionally attuned approach to life. Chris has a particular clinical focus on working with younger people, including younger boys and men. What followed was a wide-ranging (and only slightly rambling, but hey, it's a podcast!) conversation that explored the current (troubled) state of masculinity from a spiritual, psychological, scientific, cultural and political perspective. Dr. Christopher Willard, (Psy. D.) is a clinical psychologist, author and consultant based in Massachusetts. He has spoken in forty countries, and has presented at two TEDx events. He is the author of twenty books, including Alphabreaths, Growing Up Mindful, Feelings are Like Farts, and The Neuroscience of Negotiation. His thoughts on mental health have been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, mindful.org, cnn.com, and elsewhere. He teaches at Harvard Medical School. Many men are monomaniacally focused on getting an ex back. However, you should never restore a woman to her previous level of commitment after she has chosen to leave. Just like you can't step into the same river twice, you can't have the same relationship twice – even with the same person. Moving forward with clarity and self-respect often requires that you don't take her back into the role she once occupied. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters.
