However, men can – and should – get better. In today's episode, I argue that men get better by becoming stronger, richer, and more attractive – as these things might be the closest we get to inherent goods. Ignore the voices pushing weakness and decline. Invest in yourself and watch your world transform. This is my advice for men. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Mark Yarhouse and Dr. Julia Sadusky about the rapidly expanding language of emerging sexual identities and what it means for the young people we care about. We explore why new terms keep appearing, how identity forms in adolescence, and what teens are actually trying to express when they use language many of us have never heard before. Rather than reacting with fear or reducing anyone to a label, Mark and Julia help us rethink our posture, moving toward curiosity, presence, and trust instead of anxiety and quick judgments. We dig into discipleship, belonging, and how to walk with teens in a way that reflects the steady, un-fragile heart of God. If you're a parent, pastor, or leader trying to navigate this moment with wisdom, compassion, and clarity, this conversation offers a hopeful and deeply grounded way forward.Mark A. Yarhouse, Psy.D., is a clinical psychologist who specializes in conflicts tied to religious identity and sexual and gender identity. He assists people who are navigating the complex relationship between their sexual or gender identity and Christian faith. He is a Professor of Psychology at Wheaton College, where he runs the Sexual and Gender Identity (SGI) Institute and the Mental Health Collective. He is an award-winning teacher and researcher and is the past recipient of the Gary Collins Award for Excellence in Christian Counseling. He was a past participant with the Ethics and Public Policy Center think tank in Washington, DC, and he was named Senior Fellow with the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities to conduct a study of students navigating sexual identity concerns at Christian colleges and universities. Narcissism and Suicide Risk: The Hidden Side of NPD

This episode continues the Heal NPD Seminar Series, featuring Dr. Mark Ettensohn and his associates, Deanna Young, Psy.D., and Danté Spencer, M.A. I n this session, the group discusses a recent meta-analytic review examining suicide-related outcomes in narcissistic personality functioning. The conversation explores why studies using DSM-based diagnoses of Narcissistic Personality Disorder consistently fail to predict suicidal ideation, attempts, or self-injury, while dimensional measures that include vulnerable narcissism show strong and reliable associations with elevated risk. Themes include the distinction between grandiose and vulnerable self-states, the limitations of trait-based and purely behavioral diagnostic models, and the deeper affective and regulatory structures that define pathological narcissism. The team examines how shame, identity instability, emotional dysregulation, and collapse of self-esteem stability contribute to suicidality—and how grandiose presentations can mask underlying fragility in ways that obscure clinical risk. Throughout the seminar, the group reflects on the developmental and relational origins of vulnerable narcissism, emphasizing the role of early emotionally invalidating early environments, contingent self-esteem, and dissociated self-states in shaping defensive functioning. The discussion also highlights clinical challenges in assessing suicide risk in narcissistic patients, including the role of masking, externalization, and shame-driven withdrawal. This seminar is designed for clinicians, students, and anyone seeking a nuanced, clinically grounded understanding of narcissistic personality functioning, suicide risk, and the hidden dimensions of vulnerability that are often overlooked in public discourse. This episode continues the Heal NPD Seminar Series, featuring Dr. Mark Ettensohn and his associates, Deanna Young, Psy.D., and Danté Spencer, M.A. In this session, the group discusses Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Progress in Understanding and Treatment by Igor Weinberg, Ph.D., and Elsa Ronningstam, Ph.D. The conversation examines recent advances in how clinicians conceptualize and treat narcissistic personality disorder, moving beyond fixed trait models toward a dynamic, relational understanding of the self and its development. Themes include the interplay between grandiose and vulnerable self-states, the interdependence of self-esteem regulation, affect, cognition, empathy, and interpersonal functioning, and the recognition that narcissistic pathology evolves through cumulative disruptions in early attunement and relational safety. The discussion also explores how developmental misattunements - whether through neglect, overindulgence, or inconsistency - shape defensive adaptations and contribute to the oscillation between self-inflation and shame. Throughout the seminar, the team reflects on the therapeutic process of working with narcissistic patients, emphasizing empathy, reflective capacity, and the slow, relational work of rupture and repair that makes genuine transformation possible. A popular meme that is circulating the internet involves women posting videos of men demonstrating uncommon provision and devotion with the caption: “if he wanted to, he would.” The idea here is that women should never accept less than full princess treatment in their romantic relationships. However, there is more to this trope than meets the eye. In today's episode, I discuss some of the surprising motivations behind female crowing. The truth is that if he wanted to, maybe he would – and maybe he shouldn't. Women often complain online about men doing “the bare minimum” when planning and executing dates. In today's episode, I present a number of arguments why it may – in fact – be in men's best interests to do as little as possible, especially early in the courtship process. Besides enabling men to establish sustainable reinforcement protocols, doing as little as possible helps men separate the women who really like them from the women who simply want to use them for their own purposes. This is why men need to do the bare minimum. Together, they unpack the complex and often misunderstood topic of conversion therapy—how it's defined, what the law says, and how Catholics can approach questions of faith, sexuality, and identity with both compassion and truth. From Colorado's 2019 conversion therapy ban to the challenges faced by Christian clinicians, this conversation explores the balance between faithful accompaniment and clinical integrity, while offering hope for families navigating these sensitive issues.Guest BioDr. Julia Sadusky is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the integration of faith and mental health. She works primarily with sexual and gender minorities from Christian backgrounds and provides consultation and training to churches, schools, and clinicians. Julia holds a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Regent University and a B.A. from Ave Maria University. She is also the co-author of Emerging Gender Identities: Understanding the Diverse Experiences of Today's Youth. In honor of my father's 75th birthday, I'm going to talk about one of his favorite concepts: the prison planet. Once you accept the fundamental premise of this model, a great deal of human suffering – past and present – begins to make sense. People exist in various degrees of unfreedom, and no one quite remembers how this happened. By understanding the nature of existence, we can make better choices with respect to our time on the inside.
