Christopher Nolan is one of the few directors in the world of film using traditional techniques mixed with practical modern effects to make his movies. For years he was accused of whitewashing and downplaying women alongside of criticism for telling his stories in a non-linear fashion with variations in the audio. He is also criticized for relying on explanatory dialogue instead of an overload of stimulating images. Suddenly, however, his movie The Odyssey is being called "woke" for the casting of racially-different actors and for interpreting the original story in a modern way, even portraying Odysseus as weak because the movie relied on the psychology of trauma. Ironically, the so-called diverse cast saw very little air time, and some of them were not horrible performances. Portraying Odysseus as more human and interpreting his journey through a modern lens is not in any way new to a Nolan film. Most of his films rely heavily on psychology and somewhat unorthodox dialogue. Some castings don't work, but others do; like when he was criticized for casting Heath Ledger as the Joker, which turned out to be one of the single greatest performances in cinema history. When asked about the "woke" accusations, Nolan doubled down on his body of work and made no attempt to justify it based on politics, race, gender, etc. In other words, it appears that accusations of "woke" are based on nothing but broken, hollow arguments that are looking for conspiracies and something to be angry about. In this case, it is coming from the right rather than the left. Furthermore, Nolan uses practical effects to create plane crashes, atomic bombs, and even giant cyclopes, instead of relying on CGI, something that again, ironically, something the anti-woke people are usually complaining about in Hollywood needing to change. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. The student's behavior was not addressed by the school district. Mehrfach wiederholt der achtzehnjährige Student Henry Nowak seinen Hilferuf (1):„I can't breathe.“Die Antwort des britischen Staatsorgans in Uniform ist von einer eisigen, bürokratischen Arroganz, die das gesamte westliche Wertesystem in den Abgrund reißt. Man glaubt dem Sterbenden nicht, man fixiert ihn, man dreht seine Arme auf den Rücken und legt ihm Handschellen an, während der Täter danebensteht und die Früchte einer jahrelangen, gesellschaftlichen Gehirnwäsche erntet. Es ist das finale Stadium einer Justiz und einer Medienlandschaft, die sich in ihrer moralischen Selbstgerechtigkeit so tief in antirassistischen Denkmustern verfangen hat, dass die Realität eines sterbenden weißen Jugendlichen einfach nicht mehr in das ideologische Raster passt. (1)Der Fall Henry Nowak lässt sich nicht allein durch die Bluttat im Dezember 2025 erklären. Wer die Hintergründe verstehen will, muss auch das System in den Blick nehmen, das diese Tragödie überhaupt möglich machte. Ein junger Erstsemester-Student befindet sich auf dem Nachhauseweg von einer Feier mit Freunden, er hat kaum Alkohol konsumiert, als er auf Vickrum Digwa (2) trifft. Der dreiundzwanzigjährige Sikh zückt ohne Vorwarnung ein einundzwanzig Zentimeter langes Zeremonialmesser (3), ein sogenanntes Kirpan, und sticht fünfmal auf den wehrlosen Teenager ein. Während das Opfer über einen Zaun zu fliehen versucht und die Nachbarschaft mit seinen Todesschreien alarmiert, läuft der familiäre Vertuschungsapparat der Angreifer bereits auf Hochtouren. Die Mutter des Täters, die dreiundfünfzigjährige Kiran Kaur, eilt eigens zum Tatort, um die Tatwaffe diskret an sich zu nehmen und im gemeinsamen Haus zu verstecken [4], während der Bruder Gurpreet den folgenschweren Notruf absetzt. (5)„Wir wurden gerade von einer weißen Person rassistisch angegriffen. Ich habe gerade mein Auto abgestellt, um nach Hause zu gehen, und er hat meinen Bruder angegriffen. Wir sind Sikhs, wir tragen Turbane – und er hat meinen Bruder angegriffen.“Dieser strategische Einsatz der Opferrolle war kein spontaner Impuls, sondern die gezielte Aktivierung eines gesellschaftlichen Schutzschildes, das in Großbritannien jede kritische Rationalität sofort lahmlegt. Since the start of the second Trump administration, American colleges and universities have been subject to intense political scrutiny by the White House. Both public and private institutions have negotiated settlements at the expense of DEI programs, admissions, and hefty fines and fees. Law firms, media outlets, and even cultural institutions have also been targeted.rnrnWesleyan University President Michael S. Roth is a widely recognized defender of academic freedom, democracy, and a leading voice in discussions about the future of colleges and universities. His seventh book, Safe Enough Spaces: A Pragmatist's Approach to Inclusion, Free Speech, and Political Correctness on College Campuses (2021), addresses some of the most contentious issues in American higher education, including affirmative action, safe spaces, and questions of free speech. More recently, his bylines in The Bulwark and MS NOW, fiercely defended higher education, and called on civil society to remain steadfast in opposition to extortion under the guise of dealmaking. His efforts have awarded him the 2025 PEN/Benenson Courage Award for "his unwavering commitment to defending academic freedom, protecting protest rights, and resisting attempts to silence dissent in higher education."
