Súbitamente, en medio de la noche, el bebé dejó de respirar. No tenía ninguna enfermedad. No había ingerido ningún veneno. No había monóxido de carbono en la habitación. Simplemente, cesó de respirar. El diagnóstico fue: Síndrome de Súbita Muerte Infantil. Nadie sabe su causa. Lo peor del caso es que el mal no cesó con la primera criatura. Uno tras otro murieron, con el mismo diagnóstico, cinco bebés de Waneta Hoyt, que tenía cuarenta y siete años de edad cuando murió el quinto. Bebé que le nacía, bebé que moría antes de cumplir los tres meses. Que muera del síndrome un bebé en una familia, podrá pasar. Pero que mueran cinco en una sola familia, ya son demasiados. Así que la policía comenzó a investigar. Resultó otro caso revelador de lo compleja que es el alma humana. Waneta era una buena mujer, según decían todos. Buena esposa, buena vecina, buena parienta y fiel asistente a su iglesia. Hasta adoptó a un niño que ya estaba en la secundaria. Sin embargo, apremiada por los interrogatorios, confesó haber matado a sus hijitos. El primero sí había muerto del síndrome, pero ella misma había sofocado a los otros. A uno de ellos lo había apretado con el pecho. ¿Y por qué los mató? Porque recibió tantas condolencias por el primero que se aficionó a las conmiseraciones, y quiso seguir recibiéndolas. ¡Complejidades enigmáticas del alma, impulsos tenebrosos que yacen en lo más recóndito del ser humano! Sin tener que hacer psicología barata, en la raza humana hay un solo síndrome. Es el de la culpa. Para Waneta, las condolencias mitigaban su culpa. De ese complejo de culpa devienen todos los males físicos y psiquiátricos de la humanidad. Es un complejo que empezó con Adán y Eva. Después de haber infringido el mandamiento de Dios, trataron de ocultarse en la maraña y cubrir su desnudez con hojas de higuera. No obstante, nada ni nadie puede quitarnos ese complejo de culpa. En el transcurso de los siglos el hombre ha inventado de todo para librarse de él. Ha inventado sistemas filosóficos, ha buscado religiones, y hasta ha querido hacerse ateo. Pero no hay caso. No ha podido quitarse de encima ese complejo. Es que sólo Jesucristo puede quitar la culpa del alma humana. Sólo Él puede limpiarnos del complejo de culpa y todos sus derivados. Cristo cargó en la cruz la culpa de toda la raza humana. Él pagó el precio de nuestra liberación. Él nos redimió. Sólo Cristo limpia el alma dejándola pura.
