The Greenbrier Ghost is the name given to Elva Zona Heaster Shue, a young bride murdered in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, in January 1897. After only a few months of marriage to blacksmith Edward “Trout” Shue, Zona was found dead in their home. A local doctor called it heart disease. She was buried the next day at what is now Soule Chapel Methodist Cemetery near Smoot. Her husband had dressed the body, packed her neck in a high collar and scarf, and discouraged a full examination. Zona's mother, Mary Jane Heaster, refused that story. She later testified that her daughter's spirit came to her bedside four nights in a row and described how Trout Shue had flown into a rage and broken her neck. Mary Jane took that account to the prosecutor. Zona was exhumed. The autopsy found the neck dislocated between the first and second vertebrae, the windpipe crushed, and finger marks on the throat. Edward Shue was tried in Lewisburg in the summer of 1897. The jury convicted him of first-degree murder. He was sent to the West Virginia Penitentiary at Moundsville and died there in 1900. A state historic marker still stands near I-64: the only widely cited American case in which a spirit's reported words helped open a murder investigation that ended in a conviction. In March 1954, 25-year-old Constance Fisher was living with her husband, Carl, and their three young children in Waterville, Maine. In part one of this case, we look into Constance's struggle with severe mental illness following childbirth. Following a voice she believed was God's, she drowned her three children–Richard, 6, Daniel, 4, and baby Deborah in the family home before attempting to take her own life. She was committed to Augusta State Hospital, where doctors treated her for serious psychiatric illness. Five years later, Constance was released and returned to her husband. The couple rebuilt their life and had more children. Then, on June 30, 1966, history repeated itself. Constance again drowned her three children: six-year-old Kathleen, four-year-old Michael Jon, and nine-month-old Natalie Rose. She was sent back to the Augusta State Mental Hospital to live out the rest of her life. But in 1973, with no hope of ever leaving the hospital, Constance wandered off the grounds of the hospital and into the Kennebec River where she drowned herself. Her husband, Carl, never remarried and buried his wife next to the bodies of their six children. Her stomach held ground glass, and so did her father's, both of them served from the bowl of rice her stepmother Pearl O'Loughlin had set on the table between them. Pearl had already tried the same method on her father-in-law's sugar bowl and on her sister's cat and dog, and the story comes from Troy Taylor's "Suffer the Children – American Horrors, Homicides and Hauntings."From there the show turns to Dr. Francis J. Tumblety, an uneducated patent-medicine peddler who kept a collection of women's uteruses in jars and was renting rooms on Batty Street in Whitechapel when the 1888 Ripper murders began. Inspector John Littlechild of Scotland Yard named him as a suspect in 1913, and the whole theory rests on one disputed date – whether Tumblety made bail on November 8th or November 16th, with Mary Kelly butchered in her bed on the 9th. He died at St. John's Hospital in St. Louis in May 1903, an estate of more than $135,000 behind him.Next is Bradshaw Ranch, 140 acres outside Sedona in the Verde Valley, where Linda Bradshaw reported orbs, shadow people, four short gray aliens in tan one-piece uniforms, a Bigfoot she nicknamed Big Girl, and a five-foot bipedal lizard standing on a dirt path one evening. She wrote it up with ufologist Tom Dongo in "Merging Dimensions: The Opening Portals of Sedona," and instrument readings on the property measured a magnetic field hundreds of times stronger than the surrounding desert. The U.S. government bought the ranch in May 2003 and closed it to the public without explanation.Then a Weirdo family member named Ashley Delia describes the morning her family drove out to tell her second-grade cousin that their grandfather had died in a hotel room in Effingham, Illinois. The girl wasn't surprised – a little old lady in the basement of their newly built house had already told her it was his time, and told her not to be sad. Four months later the lady came back to say the girl's other grandfather was going next, and the phone rang twenty minutes after that.After that comes Bob Lazar, who sat for a KLAS-TV interview in May 1989 under the name Dennis and said the military was reverse-engineering alien craft at a facility near Groom Lake. He described a ship that turns its belly toward its destination before it moves, which is close to what Navy aviators recorded in the Gimbal and Tic Tac encounters the Pentagon released decades later.The episode closes on Easter week of 1895 at Emanuel Baptist Church in San Francisco, where someone opened a closet in the church library and found Minnie Williams strangled and stabbed, her hands nearly severed. A search of the building turned up Blanche Lamont in the belfry, stripped and posed with her hands folded. Sunday school superintendent William Henry Theodore Durrant had courted both women, and the jury convicted him in five minutes, then sat and finished their cigars before walking back in so the verdict wouldn't look rushed.

In June, a federal park ranger wrote down a license plate on Independence Mall. Three months later, Philadelphia is running the strangest death investigation in the city since Gary Heidnik, and it has no bodies in it.This is the second episode on the Olney house. Since I last covered it, the numbers have changed completely. Four missing women became seven. Two believed dead became five. Five percent of the digital evidence reviewed became thirty percent, out of more than a million images and videos, with fifty eight separate human beings identified inside them.Robin walks through everything that broke at the September 16th press conference: the new name, Nicole Fusaro, and the video Philadelphia police say shows Raymond "R.C." Horsch tightening a zip tie around her neck with a plumbing tool. The sixth woman her family asked not to name. The seventh woman who has no name at all. The 2017 metadata that gives investigators a window and gives one defendant an alibi. The sixteen survivors who were found alive and refused to help police, and the reasons that is completely rational.Then the part that makes this case nearly unprosecutable: some women who appear dead in that footage have been found alive. R.C. Horsch spent fifty years manufacturing images of women pretending to die, and he was good enough at it that homicide detectives in 2026 cannot tell his performances from his crimes. He published the disposal method in a 2014 book under his own name, described himself as a natural at playing a perverted serial killer on a 2013 podcast, and died in his own bed at eighty two without ever being charged.And the spine of the episode: every single time the state of Pennsylvania was already standing in the room. A 1985 psychiatric report that a retired FBI agent says describes a potential serial killer. A 2009 search warrant that turned up other women's IDs and a police chief who never heard what became of them. A 2016 sit-down interview with the last man to see a missing woman alive. A 2025 search of the house itself, written up as a narcotics matter. Families pointing at the address for years.Five chances. Zero response. On September 13, 2015, firefighters responding to a wildfire near Greenwood in El Dorado County, California, discovered a cabin that had burned to the ground. In March 1954, 25-year-old Constance Fisher was living with her husband, Carl, and their three young children in Waterville, Maine. In part one of this case, we look into Constance's struggle with severe mental illness following childbirth. Following a voice she believed was God's, she drowned her three children–Richard, 6, Daniel, 4, and baby Deborah in the family home before attempting to take her own life. She was committed to Augusta State Hospital, where doctors treated her for serious psychiatric illness. Five years later, Constance was released and returned to her husband. The couple rebuilt their life and had more children. Then, on June 30, 1966, history repeated itself. In this Bell Work Talk, Casey Gwinn will begin by exploring what first led to the work and research surrounding hidden homicides. He will also examine the scope of these cases and how often they may go unrecognized or misclassified. The conversation will explore the factors that can contribute to a homicide being missed, as well as the warning signs professionals should be aware of. Finally, Casey will highlight efforts to improve the identification while also discussing strategies to help prevent homicides before they occur. Casey Gwinn is the co-founder of Alliance for HOPE International and former elected San Diego City Attorney. He is the founder of Camp HOPE America and the visionary behind the international Family Justice Center movement. He is recognized as an international expert on domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault and strangulation. He is a frequently requested keynote speaker or invited guest on talk shows, podcasts and/or news stories. Casey has authored or co-authored more than ten books including his current bestseller, Hope Rising: How the Science of HOPE Can Change Your Life. With decades of experience, Casey remains at the forefront of efforts to create safe, healthier communities across the nation. Together Casey and Gael Strack are now working to raise awareness about homicides staged as suicides. They are addressing gaps in training, protocols and legislation for both law enforcement and family members of lost loved ones through the Justice Project, a program of Alliance for HOPE International. Most recently Gael researched and Casey wrote the first legislation in the country, SB989, to address suspicious death cases in honor of Joanna Hunter who was murdered in October 2011. This landmark legislation from California gives family members more access to records, officers more access to training and incorporates ten factors of a suspicious death in intimate partner cases as well as provides legislative intent which clearly makes a suicide with a history of domestic violence a suspicious death case warranting a full investigation, interviews with family members and an autopsy. While Casey has spent his career seeking to prevent homicides from happening in the first place, the worst injustice is letting someone get away with murder. The fact that the USSR executed its citizens with little jurisprudence is well known. The word “troika” is synonymous with Stalinist repressions of the 1930s. What is less known is that the Soviet Union's death penalty regime changed significantly in the postwar period. After a brief moratorium adopted by Stalin(!) in 1947, Khrushchev revived capital punishment in 1954 as part of his war on crime. Homicide became a capital offense. The application of the death penalty became professionalized with lawyers, forensics, psychologists, and an appeals process. The narrative of appeals for clemency also changed. Whereas those from the prewar generation often cited a convict's service to the Soviet state, supplicants after the 1960s portrayed themselves as abandoned by the welfare state. In Fate in My Hands, Yana Skorobogatov looked at about a hundred of these death penalty cases and clemency appeals from 1954-1991 to understand this new regime. What were the circumstances of the crimes and their adjudication? How did those on death row make their appeals? And how did the Soviet system correspond with the death penalty in, say, the United States? Knowing nothing about the Soviet death penalty, the Eurasian Knot spoke to Skorobogatov about her book, Fate in My Hand: The Death Penalty in the Soviet Union, and what it means for the postwar USSR and for us as the death penalty once again appears on the political agenda.Guest:Yana Skorobogatov is the Gladys and Roland Harriman Assistant Professor of Russian and Soviet History in the Department of History at Columbia University. Two Boy Scouts found her body beside a tree stump in Kluxen's Woods about two hours later, stabbed 23 times, her hands bound behind her with the kind of cord local rose greenhouses used for shipping. The Madison borough council ordered the arrest of 14-year-old Francis Kluxen III, grandson of the winery's founder, the next day, and a judge released him on bail after calling the arrest unjustified. Morris County prosecutor John M. Mills went after a different man, 29-year-old greenhouse worker Frank Jancarek, on the word of Frank McGrory, a fired ex-convict who claimed Jancarek confessed to him the night of the killing. Jancarek's April 1922 trial in Morristown featured a letter opener with blood under its handle, a single hair that "closely resembled" his, a witness who conferred with the sheriff before picking him from a lineup, and a defense that told jurors to disregard the chemist's findings because he was German; the jury acquitted him in under an hour. Attorney General Thomas F. McCran then won an indictment against Kluxen, whose trial that July turned on his Boy Scout knife, his footprints at the stump and a nearby hydrant, trousers his mother soaked in water that night, and two mended handkerchiefs from the crime scene that a sewing teacher matched to five taken from a cabinet outside his bedroom. That jury deliberated three hours before acquitting him as well. Kluxen was later adopted by Monell Sayre, the wealthy founder of the Episcopal Church Pension Fund, joined the Marine Corps, shot a neighbor named Joe Hollman dead in San Diego in 1933, and went to San Quentin for a string of burglaries in 1934. The chapter, drawn from Troy Taylor's audiobook Suffer the Children: American Horrors, Homicides and Hauntings, closes with the houses now standing where the woods were, where a family with no knowledge of the case reported a thin, light-brown-haired girl appearing in a child's bedroom, and where drivers on Ridgedale and Fairview Avenues describe a girl in an old-fashioned coat and beret who vanishes in their headlights.
