In June 2025, Melissa Casias — a devoted mother, daughter, and sister — vanished from Taos, New Mexico, leaving everything she owned behind. Eleven months later, in May 2026, her remains were found in Carson National Forest. In this episode of Pushing Up Lilies, I'm examining the disturbing case of Shawn Michael Grate, a serial killer whose crimes spanned a decade across northern Ohio and left multiple families forever changed. What makes this case especially unsettling is not only the length of time the murders continued, but how many opportunities there may have been to stop the violence sooner. As investigators pieced together the evidence, a clearer picture emerged of a predator who targeted vulnerable women, leaving behind unanswered questions and unimaginable heartbreak. As a forensic death investigator, I walk through the timeline of the investigation, the evidence that ultimately connected the cases, and the forensic and investigative techniques that helped bring long-awaited answers to the victims' families. We'll also discuss how missing persons investigations, crime scene evidence, and victim identification play critical roles in solving complex serial homicide cases. But as with every case I cover, I want to keep the focus where it belongs. On the victims. Each woman had a life, a story, and people who loved her. Behind every headline was someone whose future was stolen far too soon. Their lives deserve to be remembered with dignity, not simply as part of a criminal's history. This episode explores the realities of serial homicide investigations while honoring the individuals whose stories might otherwise be overshadowed by the person responsible. A New York mother is suing a hospital for the homicide of her disabled 28-year-old daughter, who was admitted with a mild cough and died 41 days later after being intubated, sedated, and given Remdesivir, Propofol, Precedex, and Fentanyl — despite never having a COVID-19 diagnosis. Rebecca Charles says her daughter Danielle arrived at Northwell Hospital in Glen Cove with normal vitals, normal oxygen, and no pneumonia, sepsis, or respiratory distress. Records the family later obtained showed she could have been monitored or sent home. Instead, she was admitted on August 27, 2021 and died on October 6, after the hospital billed roughly $650,000. On June 9th, the Pima County Sheriff's Department officially reclassified the Nancy Guthrie case from a missing persons investigation to a homicide. The FBI did not push back. A healthcare fraud conspiracy was built on a viral video that fabricated Nancy's identity entirely — calling her a pharmaceutical compliance officer from Columbus, Ohio, when she's a retired grandmother from Tucson. The family involvement theory relies on internet “gait analysis” from compressed nighttime doorbell footage — not the FBI's Operational Technology Division, which actually performed the forensic review.And the staged disappearance theory? It asks you to believe an 84-year-old woman with a pacemaker and limited mobility secretly hired a masked, armed stranger and abandoned all her medication.The evidence in this case points to something far simpler than any conspiracy — and far more urgent.
