https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/what-caused-the-2020-homicide-spike In my review of San Fransicko, I mentioned that it was hard to separate the effect of San Francisco's local policies from the general 2020 spike in homicides, which I attributed to the Black Lives Matter protests and subsequent police pullback. The nationwide 2020 spike in homicides (source). The spike is small compared to the secular trend from the 1960s through 2000, but large by the standards of the past twenty years. Several people in the comments questioned my attribution, saying that they'd read news articles saying the homicide spike was because of the pandemic, or that nobody knew what was causing the spike. I agree there are many articles like that, but I disagree with them. Here's why:

In 2011, a paper was published in Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine examining the relationship of antidepressants and akathisia side effects in those with genetic mutations in the metabolizing genes of the CYP450 family. In the study, eight of the subjects had committed homicide and many more became extremely violent while on antidepressants. On today's podcast we welcome one of the co-authors, Christopher Crotty, and subject, David Carmichael, to share their stories.Twitter: Roger K. On February 14, 2017, the bodies of Abigail Williams (June 23, 2003 – February 13, 2017) and Liberty German (December 27, 2002 – February 13, 2017) were discovered near the Monon High Bridge Trail, which is part of the Delphi Historic Trails in Delphi, Indiana, United States, after the young girls had disappeared from the same trail the previous day. The murders have received significant media coverage because a video and audio recording of an individual believed to be the girls' killer were found on German's smartphone. Despite thousands of tips that have been sent to the police and the circulation of the recordings of the suspect, no arrest in the case has been made. May 23rd, 1934. The small town of Gibsland, LA. It's nine a.m. A well-known couple in love and crime are gunned down in their stolen, 1934 Ford Model 730 Deluxe Sedan. For twenty-one months these two, along with others in the Barrow Gang, had gone from state to state, robbing, stealing, and killing authorities and innocent people. The stuff of legends, their story has been depicted in songs, plays, books and at least eleven movies—some even produced by J Edgar Hoover himself. They were the loves of each others lives. Inseparable, these two would go down in a hail of bullets together. This is the story of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow.JOIN THE H2H INLAWS & OUTLAWS ON FACEBOOKStart Kris Calvert's Books today for FREESources used for this podcast.Start Kris Calvert's Books today FREE Kris is offering free books on her website. College freshman AJ Hadsell returns home for spring break, March 2015. Five weeks later her body is discovered face-down in a ditch, covered by a sheet of plywood. Investigators immediately identify that foul play is involved. Deep bruises are visible on Hadsell's torso and face. Hadsell has been murdered. Recorded on location at the 2022 Conference on Crimes Against Women, each episode in this bonus series will deepen our understanding of DNA testing, how it supports cold case investigations and prosecutions, and what's ahead for crime solvers around the globe. Can someone get away with murder in the 21st century? Advances in DNA testing, forensic genetic genealogy and forensic investigation are making it more difficult to do so, and applying these advances to homicide investigations is significantly reducing the time it takes to catch a killer. Forensic psychologist, Dr. Lawrence Simon, explains the critical work of investigators who pursue cold cases, serial killings and other crimes committed by deviant offenders, and how they benefit from collaboration with experts from around the world via The Vidocq Society and the Cold Case Foundation, where he is a collaborator. Dr. Simon walks us through the importance of old-fashioned detective work combined with cutting-edge technology, DNA evidence and luck - all of these playing vital roles in making it less likely for someone to get away with murder. Dr. Simon has spent over a decade working on complex crimes against persons cases and is a vital member of major cold case task forces, assisting investigators on high profile serial homicides. At the 2022 Conference on Crimes Against Women, Dr. Simon presented 3 sessions of his highly popular topic, "Sexual Deviant Killers." This is his second appearance on the Podcast on Crimes Against Women.
This week's episode involves a woman named Regina Orozco, who was 59 when she vanished from her Roebuck, South Carolina residence on January 18, 2019. At the time of her disappearance, she lived with her youngest daughter and son-in-law. She allegedly left a note stating she was going to Alaska. I say allegedly because her two oldest daughters claim their mother didn't write the note. Regina had three daughters and a son. Her two oldest daughters, Michelle and Gina Orozco, believe their mother is deceased. Regina's two older daughters have been trying to find out what happened to their mother. They don't believe their mother left on her own because she wasn't financially stable enough to just leave. Regina left behind her debit card, belongings, and identification when she disappeared. Daughters Gina and Michelle said there is no way their mother went to Alaska without any financial resources. She also didn't know anyone in Alaska. The family is divided over their missing mother. The family dynamics among the four aren't good. While the two older siblings are united in finding their mother, they both claim their brother and youngest sister haven't been involved in trying to find their mother. Unfortunately, if you do research about this case, you won't find any information about this missing woman. There is no media coverage or any other attention being given to this case. That is why it's so important for listeners to share this story. It needs attention. I am hoping the media will pick up this story and encourage law enforcement to look harder at family for answers. For this story, I spoke to Gina Orozco and Michelle Orozco who are Regina's two oldest daughters. Both women have told me they will do whatever is necessary to find their missing mother. I began this story by speaking to Michelle Orozco, who is Regina's second born. Do you know what happened to Regina? If you know what happened to her or if you can provide any information about her whereabouts, please contact South Carolina Crime Stoppers at 1-888-274-6372 or the Spartanburg Sheriff's Department at 864-596-2222.Please also visit my website for more information about my true crime and paranormal newspaper columns at www.themarcabe.com.
