Black women are six times more likely to be murdered by intimate partners than white women. In a quiet Virginia suburb, what looked like a perfect family hid something unthinkable. When police walked into the Banfield home in Herndon, they found 37-year-old nurse Christine Banfield stabbed to death and 39-year-old Joseph Ryan shot in the head. Her husband, former IRS agent Brendan Banfield, claimed it was self-defense — that Ryan had broken in and attacked his wife. But investigators soon discovered the scene was staged. Christine had never met Joseph Ryan. In reality, he had been lured to the house through a fetish site called FetLife, believing he was meeting Christine for a consensual role-play encounter. The account that contacted him used her photo and name — but wasn't her. It was allegedly created by her husband. Living in that same home was their Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, who was having an affair with Brendan. She later admitted to helping orchestrate the meeting — and described the entire deadly plan as “part of the game.” Prosecutors say the “game” was a plot to kill Christine and stage it as a home invasion gone wrong. Both Christine and Joseph Ryan ended up dead. Juliana has since pled guilty to manslaughter and agreed to testify against Brendan Banfield, who now faces aggravated murder charges in Fairfax County. His trial, most recently delayed, is set for January 13, 2026. In this Bell Work Talk, Sarah Galgano from the Geiger Institute, creators of the Domestic Violence High Risk Team (DVHRT) model will discuss the origin, four core components, goals and lessons learned from the more than 80 communities that have implemented the model. Typical team membership, including the critical role that Forensic Nurse Examiners play will be discussed. Sarah is a Senior Project Specialist for the Geiger Institute where she supports communities' efforts to implement intimate partner homicide reduction strategies and evaluate their effectiveness. Before joining the Institute, Sarah provided customized technical assistance to jurisdictions throughout the country to help them improve justice system outcomes for victims and defendants, reduce racial and ethnic disparities in the justice system, and increase community engagement with justice initiatives. She has managed a variety of projects, including the implementation of justice reform legislation, program implementation, model fidelity, institutionalizing the use of data and reporting on programmatic outcomes, and reducing the unnecessary use of incarceration. Sarah has B.A.'s from the University of Iowa and received her Master of Science degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Today The Standard can reveal a new interactive map that pinpoints London's violent crime hotspots, as latest figures show the capital still accounts for almost a third of knife offences in England and Wales. Billy Gazard, of the ONS, said the data for police-recorded crime “paints a mixed picture”, adding: “Homicide and offences involving knives and guns have all fallen in the past year.
