Brian is President of the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association (WHCA), head coach of Wausau West's hockey program, and a tech ed high school teacher. My goodness, that's one educated educator, and he knows how to talk education! Because coaching sports is about so much more than training athletes for their particular activity. It's about educating them for life, putting athletes in challenging situations that help them grow as people. With his WHCA Pres hat on, Brian shares highlights from the most recent state hockey tournaments. With his tech ed teacher hat on, Brian and Tim discuss the educational benefits of those "non-core" curriculars like wood shop and metal arts. On Saturday, Sept. 16, Andy's Madison Capitols will host the Green Bay Gamblers at Marathon Park in the first-ever USHL game in Wausau. It will also mark a family reunion for the Brandt family. Andy and Brian Brandt Jr. both grew up in Wausau and played for Wausau West. Once each of their playing careers were over, they became coaches. Andy is now the head coach and general manager for the USHL's Madison Capitols, and Brian is the head coach for Wausau West boys hockey. He is also a part-owner for the Wausau Cyclones. Noah Manderfeld speaks with the two of them about how much this event will mean to the family, and how their lives have intertwined in coaching.

It's been quite the couple of years for Wausau East football. The Lumberjacks played just two games in 2020. In 2021, they were unable to field a varsity roster. The last two years they've been bouncing as a JV team and in 8-player.  Finally, on August 11, they returned to varsity 11-man action, topping Lakeland 23-7 in Minocqua. It was their first win in 1,440 days.  Now, the team prepares for their first installment of Wausau's greatest rivalry since that two-game 2020 season; the Log Game. The game with history all the way back to the early 1970's will be renewed when East faces Wausau West on Friday night. It's not just the first meeting in a long time, it'll also be their last.  NewsChannel 7's Ben Helwig visited with Wausau East head coach Tyler Kramer as well as quarterback Pacey Weber and wide receiver Caden Werth on the emotional start to the season and why Friday's Log Game against Wausau West may just be the biggest of their lives.

Wausau West graduate and Itasca Head Coach Joe Umlauf joins the show to talk about his high school wrestling days and his path to becoming the head coach at the Minnesota JUCO. We discuss Joe's expectations both individual and teamwise coming into high school during a dominant Wausau West era, overcoming adversity over his high school career, and the team journey that West took on their way to a Team State title in Joe's senior year in 2013! We then transition to Joe's coaching career, the growth that him and his team experienced over the last five years, and how Joe helped start a Women's team at his program. Between a lot of great stories from Wisconsin wrestling in 2010-2013 and Joe's amazing philosophy on wrestling and life, this was an enthralling episode from start to finish!Support the show

The first-ever WIAA-sanctioned girls wrestling state tournament was held on Jan. 29. The tournament was a milestone for the sport of girls wrestling, which has long competed with the boys in the past. Noah Manderfeld speaks with the Wausau West girls wrestling team (Anya Mueller, Chloe Weisenberger, Savanna Danielson, Sabina Ramos, Ashley Danielson and Alianna Totzke) about the experience, and what the tournament means for the sport.
