Soul Leadership with Steve Robinson

On this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast, I sit down with Steve Robinson, pastor, leadership practitioner, and author of the upcoming book Soul Leadership. Together, we dive deep into the vital connection between leadership, trauma, and healing, exploring how leaders can move from burnout and brokenness to wholeness and real impact. Steve opens up about his personal journey, sharing honestly about years of compounding trauma—including the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the intense pressures of leading a growing church. These experiences led him to the edge of burnout, and ultimately to a powerful path of healing and discovery. Drawing from research, theology, therapy, neuroscience, and his own life, Steve reveals why caring for a leader's soul is so central to personal and organizational success. Throughout our conversation, several key themes emerge: the difference between simple exhaustion and deeper trauma, the science behind how stress and adversity affect the brain, the critical role faith and community play in emotional healing, and how adversity can become the catalyst for wisdom, empathy, and post-traumatic growth. Steve breaks down practical strategies for building resilience, the process of healing both brain and mind, and why true leadership starts with inner wholeness and connection. If you're a leader navigating challenges or want to support those around you, this episode is packed with encouragement and insight. Steve's story and research are a powerful reminder that your pain can become your purpose—and that transformation is possible when you lean into healing, connection, and the power of your soul. You'll walk away inspired and equipped to face setbacks and emerge even stronger.   About Steve, Steve Robinson is a pastor, speaker, and author and the founding pastor of Church of the King—a growing multisite church with campuses spread across the US and internationally. Under his leadership, Church of the King has launched new locations from South Louisiana to Cape Town, South Africa, and built a thriving online community that reaches people around the world with a message of hope and purpose. A graduate of Tulane University with a Doctor of Ministry from Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida, Steve is passionate about helping people grow in their faith, discover their God-given potential, and live with clarity and resilience. He serves on the board of Equip, a global leadership organization founded by John Maxwell, and is the author of several books, including Decide to Thrive, Perspective Shift, and Hope Again. With a passion for helping people grow and thrive, Pastor Steve is dedicated to guiding others in their faith and everyday life. #159: Blackwell – Arts & Crafts in Lakeland

...in which we head south over a snowy Dunmail Raise to immerse ourselves in the world of Arts and Crafts at Blackwell. In the company of Niall Hodson, Keeper of Collections at Lakeland Arts, we start our conversation taking a long view over wintry Windermere and the context in which the Arts & Crafts movement emerged – the rise of mass production in the Victorian age. Paying homage to John Ruskin – over the hill in Coniston – we consider the polymath visionary's founding contribution to a movement that encompassed social justice, art and architecture, and the impact of his iconic treatise The Stones of Venice that called for traditional craftsmanship, simplicity and the use of natural materials in everything from furniture to buildings. Entering Blackwell, we are immersed in the movement made real, with immaculately detailed stonework, wood carvings, floor tiles, stained glass and wallpaper showcasing the creative talents of dozens of local craftspeople, all designed into a coherent rural retreat for the wealthy Holt family of Manchester. Wandering through room after enchanting room, we meet two more key figures whose lives are intertwined with the house: William Morris – the revolutionary designer, craftsman, social activist, and founder of Morris & Co – and Blackwell architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott, whose extraordinary vision gave rise to one of Lakeland's finest, and most eccentric, houses. In divers quickfire ramblings that take in pubs, breweries and stag do's, we proceed into Blackwell's recent past, and its second life as an evacuees' boarding school, before closing by considering the legacy of one of the country's most important arts movements – as relevant as ever in the age of AI. Blackwell is open from now until 31 March: Monday – Saturday 10am – 4pm, then 1 April – 31 October: Monday to Saturday 10am – 5pm. The house is currently exhibiting 'Frances Priest Motif | Line | Colour' until 11 April, 2026. Explore the ceramic work of celebrated Edinburgh-based artist Frances Priest in an exhibition tracing 25 years of her artistic work. Looking for daily inspiration?  Get a quote from the top leaders in the industry in your inbox every morning.   Every year, millions of attraction visitors lose hours in line instead of making memories. Since its inception, accesso's virtual queuing has saved more than 4.5 billion minutes of wait time, freeing guests to pack their day with more rides, eats, and excitement. The result? Happier guests who spend more and a better bottom line for you. Ready to turn waits into wins? Visit accesso.com/ROIClinic. The queues are virtual. The results are real. Josh Henderson is the CEO of Bonnet Springs Park in Lakeland, Florida. His career path spans the for-profit attractions world, starting as a lifeguard and expanding through roles across water parks and major operators like Six Flags and Great Wolf Lodge, along with leadership in privately funded public parks. Today, he leads a nonprofit natural attraction designed to deliver a high-quality experience without a gate fee, supported by donations and mission-driven revenue. In this interview, Josh talks about being a student of the industry, community dictating the business model, and emerging natural attractions. Being a student of the industry “I think being a student of the industry is starting out in one particular sect and then continuing to move on, and try and learn as much about each discipline as I can, really served me well and helped me grow in my career.” Josh frames his growth as a willingness to expand beyond his original lane. Early on, he was convinced aquatics was his forever path, but as his interests evolved, he leaned into learning disciplines he once avoided, such as food and beverage. That mindset now shows up in how he spends time in outlets, looks for new revenue opportunities, and stays curious about parts of the business he doesn't claim to have mastered. He also shares how he learned by putting himself in rooms where he wasn't the expert: “going into the uncomfortable situations where you're not the smartest person in the room, and and being humble enough to accept that.” Conferences, peer conversations, and surrounding himself with specialists became his playbook for continuous learning, especially in fast-changing areas like marketing. Community dictating the business model “We've allowed the community to dictate part of our business model.” Bonnet Springs Park wasn't designed in a vacuum. The founders conducted focus groups and asked residents what they wanted most. One clear answer shaped a major revenue and experience driver: an event venue that could host hundreds, where people could choose their own caterer. That choice reflects a deeper clue about the park's role: it's meant to serve community needs, not just operator preferences. That same philosophy shows up operationally. Josh describes a difficult mindset shift from maximizing yield to creating shared opportunity, like bringing in authentic food trucks for festivals even when it hurts his margins: “when you're a community park and you're doing something for the betterment of the community, that means giving somebody else a chance to make a dollar as well.” In his view, the park succeeds when the community feels ownership, champions the mission, and participates in sustaining it. Emerging natural attractions “It barely existed when I got into it back in 2017.” Josh positions Bonnet Springs as part of a growing sector that blends nature, placemaking, and attractions-grade operations. He calls it something you almost have to see to understand: a free park that aims to deliver “a paid level experience for free,” with immaculate restrooms, interactive exhibits, and accessibility features like a free internal tram system so guests with mobility challenges can fully enjoy the property. He also links this sector's growth to professionalization: daily inspections, strong documentation, and applying paid-attraction standards to a free environment because attendance and wear-and-tear are so intense. The opportunity, he suggests, is for leaders to think of the attractions world as an umbrella where “good business is good business,” and where creating “family experiences” can look different than building roller coasters while still delivering the emotional outcomes the industry is known for.   Josh shared that people can learn more at BonnetSpringsPark.com. He can also be found on LinkedIn or by email at josh@bonnetspringspark.com. "Please Be Kind": Life After 19 Days – Everyday Philanthropy, Second Chances, and Showing Up - Paul Meese 2 | Conversations with a Chiropractor What does life look like after the hospital, after the funeral, after the book? In this follow-up episode of Conversations with a Chiropractor, Dr. Stephanie Wautier reconnects with Paul Meese, author of 19 Days: One Man's Journey Through Grief, to talk about the next chapter: leaving his HR career, taking his family to Hawaii for Christmas, navigating the isolation of COVID, finding love again, and building a life that quietly runs on generosity. Paul shares how retirement wasn't an escape so much as a reckoning, why he chose a Christmas trip over trying to recreate old traditions, and how donating, decluttering, and "just helping where I can" turned into a pattern of everyday philanthropy. From supporting women's education and animal rescue, to stocking community resources and donating airline miles so families can say goodbye in person, he shows how small choices can carry big weight. If the first conversation was about surviving 19 days of crisis, this one is about what you build in the years that follow—and how "Please be kind" becomes a daily practice, not just a nice phrase.

Many Christians understand purpose—but still miss timing. Dr. Rutland confronts one of the most overlooked truths: God's will requires God's timing. Purpose without timing creates chaos. Timing without obedience creates delay. But when purpose and timing align—systems shift, doors open, and favor flows. What You'll Learn in Part 1 Why divine timing is a spiritual discipline, not a coincidence. How to discern the difference between your timing and God's timing. Why rushing God's process leads to unnecessary warfare. How prophets and leaders can cultivate sensitivity to God's pace. ...in which dazzling autumn light illuminates a breezy walk between Ambleside and Elterwater in the company of art historian Dr Lizzie Fisher, where we discuss the remarkable life of the groundbreaking 20th-century German artist Kurt Schwitters, who died in exile in the Lake District. Born in 1887 in Hanover, Lizzie introduces us to the pioneering modern artist, and the wandervogel ‘back to nature' youth movement that was a reaction against capitalism and industrialisation. Pausing to enjoy views over Fairfield and Wansfell, we consider the scientific and social revolution of the ‘fizzing' inter-war years and artists' subversive responses to the rise of national socialism. Finding himself on the Nazi's list of degenerate artists, we follow Schwitters as he abandons his first immersive ‘Merzbau' in flight to Norway and thence to internment on the Isle of Man, where the gregarious creative entertained inmates by crafting porridge towers and howling at the moon. Introducing Edith ‘Wantee' Thomas – Schwitters' latter-day support and companion – we enter the artist's Lakeland years, highlighting the confident, prolific and underacknowledged second artistic life (540 works in three years) that started when he settled in Ambleside, and the oft-epic walks he undertook as Westmorland became home. Finally, we learn about the chance encounter that led Schwitters to the Cylinders Estate in Great Langdale, opposite the Langdale Estate – a one-time hangout of intellectuals – bohemians and artists, and his last great, unfinished work, the Merzbarn, in the woods north of Elterwater. Dr Lizzie Fisher is a curator and art historian, and principal of Higham Hall College – an educational trust supporting lifelong learning in the arts and humanities through a year-round programme of lectures, events, short residential courses and retreats in the Lake District. www.highamhall.com For more about the Cylinders Estate and the Merzbarn as it now is – in the care of the Factum Foundation – see here. Part of the Merzbarn's wall was relocated for preservation to the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle in 1966, where it is on permanent display. For more information visit merzbarn.co.uk

Around 3:00 AM on September 5th, 1981, a woman drove through a housing development in Lakeland, Florida. She was with two of her friends, who had agreed to spend the night at her duplex. And this was a huge relief to the woman, because yesterday there'd been a violent murder in their neighborhood. So the woman was terrified at the thought of sleeping alone, and was really grateful that her friends were going to keep her company. As soon as she parked in front of her home, though – she froze. The front curtains were open, and through the window she could see a figure moving around inside her home. But before she could say or do anything – that figure yanked the curtains shut. For 100s more stories like these, check out our main YouTube channel just called "MrBallen" -- https://www.youtube.com/c/MrBallenIf you want to reach out to me, contact me on Instagram, Twitter or any other major social media platform, my username on all of them is @mrballen Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Today's shout-out goes to Steve Winton from Lakeland, FL. Your commitment through Project23 helps deliver God's Word daily with clarity and conviction. This one's for you. Our text today is Judges 15:3-5 "And Samson said to them, 'This time I shall be innocent in regard to the Philistines, when I do them harm.' So Samson went and caught 300 foxes and took torches. And he turned them tail to tail and put a torch between each pair of tails. And when he had set fire to the torches, he let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines and set fire to the stacked grain and the standing grain, as well as the olive orchards." — Judges 15:3-5 Samson is furious. His wife's father gave her away to another man, and now humiliation burns inside him. So he cooks up a plan—literally. He ties torches between the tails of 300 foxes and lets them loose in Philistine fields, torching grain and olive orchards. For Samson, it felt like justice. For the Philistines, it was destruction. And shortly, the retaliation would escalate. That's the way revenge works—it feels satisfying for a moment, but it never ends there. It multiplies the misery. Revenge never heals your hurt; it multiplies it. When you've been betrayed or wronged, the urge to "get even" screams loud. We daydream about comebacks, plots, or even just the perfect cutting words. And for a moment, it feels powerful. But it never brings peace—it only fans the flames of bitterness. Samson's fire scorched the Philistines, but it also scorched his future. His revenge didn't settle the score; it made the fight bigger. God calls us to a better way. Romans 12:19 says, "Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.'" God can handle justice better than you ever could. Revenge chains you to anger; forgiveness frees you to live. ASK THIS: Where are you tempted to "get even" right now? How have you seen revenge backfire in your life before? Why is it so hard to trust God with justice? What might forgiveness free you from today? DO THIS: Write down the name of the person you want revenge on. Pray: "God, vengeance belongs to You. I give this into Your hands." PRAY THIS: Lord, You see the hurt in my heart. I want revenge, but I choose to release it to You. Free me from bitterness, and help me trust You with justice. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Battle Belongs."

In this deeply human episode of Conversations with a Chiropractor, Dr. Stephanie Wautier talks with Paul Meese, author of 19 Days: One Man's Journey Through Grief, about the sudden loss of his wife Ruth, the chaos of hospital systems, and what grief actually looks like when you stop trying to be "strong" and start being honest. Paul walks through the 19 days from Ruth's stroke to her passing, the conversations no one wants to have with doctors, and why power of attorney, clear wishes, and real advocacy matter long before crisis hits. He also shares how anger, exhaustion, and loneliness eventually gave way to road trips, counseling, writing, and a choice to keep giving in Ruth's name. From scholarships for women in machining to senior dog rescue and donating airline miles so families can say goodbye in person, Paul shows how grief can grow into something active, grounded, and quietly powerful. If you've lost someone, love someone, or know you'll someday have to step into that advocate role, this conversation will stay with you.
