John McCabe, Seamus Kearney and Sean Callan, Advisors on the Teagasc Aurivo, Teagasc Tirlán and Teagasc Lakeland joint programmes, join Stuart Childs to give a more countrywide feel for the situation on farms around Ireland currently following the recovery in grass growth in the last few weeks. The impact of the drought varied significantly by region with the west generally less affected, while parts of the Lakelands, due to the geography of the catchment, and especially the south and east experienced major reductions in grass growth and farm cover which in turn led to substantial supplementary feeding.Seamus explains that the winter fodder shortages are the main concern and that although grass growth and farm covers have recovered, many farms in the Tirlán catchment have used large quantities of silage and meal during the summer. Fodder budgets have identified shortages of approximately two bales per cow on the lighthouse farms, making early feed purchasing and planning essential. Meanwhile, some of farms on the Lakeland programme have significant surplus but with wet starts and ends to the year more common, it may well be needed in the future. The key message is to quantify and act early.  Farmers should complete fodder budgets, manage the final grazing rotation carefully, assess grazing infrastructure and improve if possible or plan to improve in the future to maximise opportunities to get cows to grass even in challenging conditions. Where deficits have been identified, consider options such as buying fodder, using meal to stretch existing supplies, and/or removing underperforming/empty cows earlier to protect winter feed stocks. For more episodes from the Dairy Edge podcast go to the show page at:https://www.teagasc.ie/animals/dairy/the-dairy-edge-podcast/ The Dairy Edge is a co-production with LastCastMedia.com

...in which we head east to one of Lakeland's loneliest dales, and tell the story of a once-thriving valley lost beneath the dammed waters of Haweswater. In the company of local historian and dialect champion Jean Scott-Smith, we set the historic scene on Mardale, cradled in the Far Eastern Fells and overlooked by a British fort, a Roman Road and Scandinavian shielings. Proceeding into the 18th century, Jean paints a picture of a bustling farmed valley, with rich dairy pastures and a steady flow of traders and packmen making their way over the passes of Nan Bield and Gatesgarth and down past High and Low Water. Recounting tales of the Kendal Archers, boisterous nights at the Old Dun Bull (where buckets of ale were passed around) and the legendary week-long Mardale Shepherds Meet (originally held on High Street, latterly at the Dunnie), we introduce a range of local characters, from the Kings of Mardale to eccentric ‘Old Barham' the vicar, who bled parishioners using a tortoise-shell lancet. With the waters of Thirlmere insufficient to meet the growing thirst of Manchester, we learn about Manchester Corporation's acquisition of the valley – with barely a whisper of protest – and, following the Haweswater Act of 1919, the subsequent abandonment of the hamlets of Measand, Mardale Green and Whelter before the grammar school was relocated, the church taken down and Royal Engineers arrived with explosives to raze the remaining farms and homesteads. Heading up-dale to rain-drenched Mardale Head, Jean points out landmarks uncovered by the summer's drought – including foundations of the Dun Bull, and the old valley road (its walls as they were 90 years after the terminal flood) – before noting nearabouts landmarks – the corpse road to Shap, the grandstand-view peatcutters' huts, the former navvie settlement of Burnbanks. Closing the pod in Shap's upper graveyard – where many of Mardale's dead were reinterred – we reflect on the passing of a community; on the media circus that unfolds in dry years; and on the surprise discovery of Mardale's long lost church organ. Shap Local History Society holds an extensive archive, including artefacts and images relating to Mardale, at their Heritage Centre, Market Cross, Shap. The archive is open by arrangement – please contact either 01931 716671 or 01931 716386.

If the summer had you second-guessing your salad, you're not alone. Cyclosporiasis, a nasty stomach bug caused by a microscopic parasite, spread across several states, sickening more than 1,100 people and killing two.The outbreak was linked to iceberg lettuce grown at a Mexican farm.It appears the outbreak's settling down. So, what should you know about leafy greens? How safe are they to eat? And how did the Cyclospora parasite get into the food supply in the first place? Also, we're hitting the peak of hurricane season. But it's been very tranquil in Florida. And, customers at a family St. Petersburg bodega come in search of Cuban sandwiches, conversation and community. They're described in a local author's "love letter" to her parents. Then we check back in with a popular Lakeland bakery featured on The Zest podcast in 2019. In John 4, an encounter at a well shows how Jesus transforms ordinary lives for a greater purpose. The things we look to for satisfaction will always leave us thirsty, but Jesus offers something lasting and invites us to share it with others. In this message, we discover how to move beyond apathy, recognize the people God has placed around us, and invite others to encounter Jesus. Sharing faith does not require having every answer. It simply starts with being willing to point people to Him.#GraceCityChurch #churchonlineGrace City Church in Lakeland, FloridaJoin Us Every Sunday at 8:30, 10:00 & 11:30am ESTListen To Our New Album “Middle Of A Miracle”https://found.ee/MiddleOfAMiracle?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio&fbclid=PAcGRvZgJleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZA85MzY2MTk3NDMzOTI0NTkAAadaHkMiRgRfESXvSqeN-LsEpJfgza2FCNQGPrrnmUGICJ4a-8XPuE_UvXSCDA_aem_bTEYaV9UnQnyr3WT5GMfdwGive Online: https://gracecity.com/give/Said Yes to Jesus Today? Home sales in Florida continue to rise as out-of-market and international buyers increasingly focus on the Sunshine State. Florida has dominated a new list of markets attracting out-of-town shoppers for newly built homes, with outside shoppers generating more than 80% of new-construction views in several of the state's metro areas. Out-of-market buyers drive more than 80% of new-construction views in cities like Lakeland, Cape Coral, and Port St. Lucie. What is driving the interest in owning a home in Florida? Austin Walley - AP History Teacher Turned Cybersecurity Educator and a believer in figuring it out. Austin Walley is a cybersecurity educator at George Jenkins High School in Lakeland, Florida, where he leads the school's cybersecurity academy. But unlike many people in the field, Austin didn't start in technology. He started as an AP history teacher and was recruited into cybersecurity after his administrators saw something beyond technical skills: his ability to question, teach, build relationships, and connect with students. In this episode, Austin shares how he went from knowing almost nothing about cybersecurity to building and teaching an evolving cybersecurity program. He breaks down why teaching cyber means constantly rebuilding the curriculum, how to separate foundational skills from technology that will quickly become outdated, and why students don't need to be “super, super technical” to get started. Live from CyberLaunch 2026, Austin shares his experience preparing high school students for cybersecurity careers, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and communication and how CTF competitions reveal natural leaders in the classroom. He also explains why resilience and the ability to “figure it out” may be some of the most important skills a future cybersecurity professional can develop. He also shares what it's like when everyone assumes the cyber teacher knows everything about computers, why students from completely different backgrounds can thrive in cybersecurity, and how his school's administrators took a chance on him and continued to support him every step of the way. Rising costs, tariffs, and AI are changing the estimating environment—and contractors need to know where the risks are before they sign the contract. In Episode 115 of Law and Mortar, Trent Cotney and John Kenney discuss increasing fuel and material costs, including the potential impact of new tariffs on Canadian cement, paint, varnishes, wood products, and other construction materials.John explains why contractors may see moderate price increases over the coming quarters even without widespread material shortages, while Trent focuses on protecting contractors through proper contract language, bidding practices, and due diligence. The conversation also examines how tariffs on materials such as concrete can affect roofing contractors indirectly through project costs, schedules, and delays—even when those materials aren't part of the roofing scope.Plus, John announces his Advanced Estimating Workshop in Lakeland, Florida, November 17–18, and the episode closes with an important discussion about AI in estimating.Topics include:Rising fuel and construction material costsTariffs and their potential impact on contractorsProtecting bids against price escalation and project uncertaintyRecognizing project red flags before signing a contractDue diligence and contractual risk protectionAdvanced estimating strategiesWhere AI can—and cannot—help estimatorsWhy human judgment and verification remain essentialAI can organize information and improve efficiency, but it cannot see every variable that makes an estimate successful. …in which we tour south Lakeland to tell the remarkable story of an industry that expanded from one-man bloomeries set deep in the woods to blast furnaces powering the industrial age. In the company of industrial history enthusiast Mark Hatton we begin our journey at Glen Mary below Tarn Hows, where we are introduced to the three ingredients that allowed Furness monks to first produce iron: expansive woodlands, fast-flowing rivers and rich deposits of local hematite. Noting clues of iron in the landscape – Red Screes, Red Pike, Red Tarn – we visit an oak-shaded glade that was once a charcoal-burners' platform, where coppiced timber was piled high then baked to create the ‘rocket fuel' charcoal required to generate temperatures of 1,000+ degrees centigrade. Moving upstream, we come upon an ancient bloomery, where hematite from Orgrave (literally ‘ore pit') was transported, by boat then pony, to ‘bloom' in the charcoal hearth before being forged into weapons and farming tools to help Cumbria's medieval farmers eke out a marginal living. Heading south, we visit the site of a 17th century bloom-smithy in the heart of Coniston, learn about the laws introduced to ban timber extraction as Lakeland's woods were fed to the furnaces, and the journey of Cumbrian entrepreneurs into Scotland as home-grown forests were denuded. Ending our trip in Furnace Wood (the clue's in the name) above Duddon Bridge, we explore a network of ancient holloways and moss-reclaimed cobbled trails, remnants of a thriving woodland industry feeding Britain's largest surviving blast furnace, where a huge waterwheel powered bellows heating a next-generation hearth to fulfil the insatiable iron needs of the industrial age. Taking a long view of a lost, and neglected, industry, we seek out a slate wall melted by fire before reflecting on the zenith, then decline, of Cumbria's iron age, when Barrow alone produced more steel than anywhere else on earth. The Duddon Furnace (with parking alongside) is located at Grid Reference SD 197 883, immediately north-west of Duddon Bridge. More details can be found at https://lakedistrict.gov.uk/explore/things-to-do/historical-places/industrial-heritage-sites/ The first site we visited was in Lane head Coppice beside Tom Gill below Tarn Hows (SD 3221, 9989). It is around a two minute walk uphill from Glen Mary car park (National Trust).

You said you were fine, but fine is not a spiritual condition—it's a managed one. Fine means you've stopped expecting anything, stopped reaching for anything, and settled into the low hum of a life that moves without going anywhere. You're not in crisis. You're not walking away from the Lord. You're just less hungry than you used to be, less expectant, less alive. And because nothing is dramatically wrong, you've convinced yourself nothing needs to change. Dr. Chris Palmer joins me for a conversation that names what that condition actually is—and it's not a season. Dr. Palmer is Dean of the Barnett College of Ministry and Theology at Southeastern University and the author of A World Without God (Zondervan), a work of narrative philosophy that takes the reader into Novemberton, an allegorical town in the grip of something it cannot name. What he argues is that the despair overtaking our culture isn't arriving as a manifesto—it's arriving as a mood. Nihilism, as he frames it, is not the dramatic philosophy-class version; it's the quiet, functional, show-up-to-church version—passive surrender dressed as stability, apathy wearing the clothes of peace. We talk about why values are on sale right now, what practical polytheism looks like inside a congregation, how self-centered spirituality masquerades as devotion, and why the only thing durable enough to bear the weight of our emptiness is not our own shoulders. This conversation will not give you a strategy. It will give you a mirror—and what you do with what you see in it is the entire question. Come ready to be honest about what you've been calling fine. Guest Bio Dr. Chris Palmer is Dean of the Barnett College of Ministry and Theology at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida, where he teaches at the intersection of New Testament studies, philosophy, and cultural theology. He holds a PhD from Bangor University in Wales and is the author of several books, including his latest, A World Without God (Zondervan)—a work of narrative philosophy that examines what happens to meaning, purpose, and the human soul when God is not forgotten so much as he is treated as one option among many.
