The MLB trade deadline has passed and the Mariners did the thing, reacquiring popular 3B Eugenio Suarez in the midst of a career year without surrendering any of the team’s top prospects. We break down how this trade deadline had … Continue reading →
Eugenio Suarez returning to Seattle is so exciting, and Brock and Salk talk about how this shows that the Mariners are very serious about 2025. They also tie the Suarez trade back to Cal Raleigh's conversation that he had with the front office in Spring Training about a committment to winning and how this lives up to the team's word. In Blue 88, Brock takes a look at AJ Barner, comparing Sam Darnold to Alex Smith and Brock's takeaways from UW camp.
The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters - pulled some double-duty Thursday on Montlake. Kim handled the men's basketball media day while Chris watched the football team go through their paces on day two of fall camp. To start with, the guys talk about the football practice, which was very similar to Wednesday's day one workout. There was no competition, a heavy focus on fundamentals on both sides of the ball and also a ton of special teams work. They went through some of the standouts first on the offensive side of the ball, including younger players like Adam Mohammed, Dezmen Roebuck, and Raiden Vines-Bright, as well as the full offensive line two-deeps. Then they switched it up and talked about some of the defensive standouts, as well as updates on those players that have been using these first two days to be half-practicing and half-conditioning. Players like Jacob Manu, Zaydrius Rainey-Sale, Denzel Boston, Quentin Moore, Deshawn Lynch, Jayvon Parker, Armon Parker, and more. And finally in the first segment the guys were hit with the awful news that former UW and longtime Pac-10 and Pac-12 Offensive Line Coach Dan Cozzetto passed away. Kim and Chris offered up their best Coz stories during his time on Montlake; he will be sorely missed by those that got a chance to get to know him. Then after a quick break the talk turned to hoops and today's media day, which included a press briefing with UW Head Coach Danny Sprinkle, and also some of the new players like freshman PG JJ Mandaquit and freshman forward Hannes Steinbach, who competed against each other recently in Switzerland for the FIBA World Cup crown, eventually won by the United States over Germany in the final. Kim offered his thoughts on the conversations he had with Sprinkle and the players, as well as what he saw during the open workout period this morning in Hec Ed. A LOT of great insight here on Washington's new team as Kim broke down his thoughts on basically every player he saw, and they are definitely a new team compared to last season. It was a rare start to fall camp, in fact it's something we really haven't seen before. There was literally no 11-11 competition at all during day one of Washington's fall camp, held Wednesday morning inside Husky Stadium. What took place was mostly individual drills for each position group, as well as plenty of special teams work as the Huskies won't get into full pads for a few more workouts. It did allow the guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - time to really watch the team run and jump around, as well as get their first opportunity at seeing the players that enrolled in June. To start the post-practice podcast, the guys talk about the news that Ryan Otton is medically redshirting. This shouldn't come as big news to hardcore UW fans, as the former Tumwater star and younger brother of Cade Otton played in just two games in three seasons. He simply couldn't get healthy and/or stay healthy, and so a medical retirement definitely felt like it was on the cards. UW Head Coach Jedd Fisch also announced that quarterback Shea Kuykendall is redshirting the 2025 season and will stay on as a student assistant. How does that change the makeup of the QB room? Does it mean the freshmen quarterbacks move up, or had they already passed Kuykendall the depth chart by the end of spring? After some talk about the offensive players that stood out, the guys then turn their attention to the defensive side of the ball, including talk on a couple players that were talked about a lot during Tuesday's media day - defensive back Rahshawn Clark and defensive lineman Anterio Thompson. The guys also talked about the move of true frosh Donovan Robinson to linebacker. Scott provided a quick recruiting update and Kim previewed Thursday's UW Men's Basketball Media Day, as the Dawgman guys will be pulling double duty tomorrow. RUNDOWN Music history in honor of Tommy Mottola's July 14 birthday—Mitch details how Mottola signed Hall & Oates and running through each of their six No. 1 hits. The “audio clip of the week” spotlights former Cubs manager Lee Elia's legendary profanity-laden tirade at Wrigley Field after a 5–14 start in 1983. Mitch and Hotshot celebrate Seattle's sweep of first-place Detroit and reviewing the Mariners' 51–45 first-half record, good enough for a wild-card spot if the season ended today. Mitch explains why he's optimistic—his rotation is poised to string together quality starts, and an offense buoyed by hot streaks from Randy Arozarena, strong on-base work from JP Crawford, and newfound production from lower-order hitters means the club doesn't need Cal Raleigh to carry the load alone. Mariners bounce back from a blown five-run lead and near no-hitter loss in New York to sweep the AL's best Tigers, cementing a wild-card spot at the All-Star break. Mariners No-Table (Brady Farkas) unpack the unexpected selection of LSU lefty Cade Anderson (saved under slot, with a high floor) as a near-MLB-ready arm, dissect Julio Rodríguez's decision to skip the ASG before homering in each Detroit game, and express outrage that Gino Suárez (31 HRs) wasn't invited to the Home Run Derby. Mitch and Puck chat KJRn'ts Chapter 8 by commiserating over their sudden need for reading glasses and sharing a wild family dare in which Mitch finally ate an entire bowl of mushrooms after his son aced the SAT. They then catch up on life—Jason's youth baseball woes, Mitch's freshman at Arizona—and take playful shots at Jim Moore's “top sports radio hosts” rankings. In this throwback to Ep. 197 (July 5, 2022), Mitch sits down with Rhonda Smith Banchero to revisit her own collegiate battles—most memorably guarding Cheryl Swoopes—and to explore how her “tough-love” coaching shaped Paolo's rise to the No. 1 NBA draft pick. Rhonda shares the moment she bowed out of one-on-one after seventh grade, her deliberate accountability style at home, and the family's bittersweet pride as Paolo chose Duke over UW. Now that he's secured a record-setting $239 million extension, her insights on nurturing a champion feel more poignant than ever. From the news that Michael Jordan's Highland Park estate is now an Airbnb (no parties allowed) to celebrity-boxing matchups, LeBron's Beverly Hills compound, Wimbledon winners, and even the exit of Pearl Jam's longtime drummer Matt Cameron, Mitch and Hotshot pack a whirlwind of sports and pop-culture headlines into one rapid-fire segment.
