Back to work on a steamy Monday. Looking at high temps around 90° today. Thankfully, some thunderstorms move in later this week & cool things off a bit. In the news this morning, some Pope stuff…including the video of him at the World Series a few years ago, and a restaurant in Chicago that has a new "Pope" sandwich on their menu. Plus, this year's inductees to the Video Game Hall of Fame, a deal between the US & China on tariffs, a drowning in Wausau, and a guy who stole a bunch of catalytic converters. In sports, the Brewers managed to get one win against the Rays this weekend, a recap of yesterday's NBA & NHL playoff action, Kyle Larson dominating at Kansas, and a look ahead to tonight's NBA & NHL schedules. Elsewhere in sports, legendary ECW wrestler "Sabu" passed away this weekend, Jose Aldo announced his retirement, and a cool Mother's Day gift for an MLB mom yesterday. We let you know what's on the TV tonight and talked about another news analyst who fainted during a live broadcast. Plus, a cool story about a mom & her son who both graduated from the same college. And did you see the maternity ward in Green Bay that is full of pregnant nurses? If you've ever wondered why your food seems to taste better after a couple of cocktails, there's apparently some science behind that. A recent poll asked people what the ideal "body count" is for a person to have. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a naked man biting a dog, a Pizza Hut that was storing some of it's stuff in a bathroom, a guy who assaulted a kid with his lightsaber, a road-rage incident in #Florida that ended in a shooting, and a woman who divorced her husband because of ChatGPT.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Chad Holmes steps in for Pat Kreitlow and the episode kicks off with disbelief at President Trump's appointment of Jeanine Pirro as a federal prosecutor, showcasing chaos and lack of seriousness in leadership. The crowning of a Midwestern Pope, Pope Leo XIV, sparks a mix of excitement and controversy among Catholics, especially amid 'woke' accusations. The show also touches on local Wisconsin issues, like the mayoral antics in Wausau and the challenges facing a local ginseng farm due to trade wars Mornings with Pat Kreitlow airs on several stations across the Civic Media radio network, Monday through Friday from 6-9 am. Kewaunee, Hayward, West Allis and Wausau were the gathering points for the Joint Finance Committees "Road Show", and turnout was strong - especially in Wausau. Wisconsin Senator Patrick Testin (R-Stevens Point) is the current chair of the Senate Agriculture and Revenue committee, and a member of the JFC. He tells Pam Jahnke about some of the programs that were singled out by attendees during the town hall conversations. Testin said ARIP, the Agricultural Road Improvement Program, was one that received tremendous support.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Wisconsin Legislature has scheduled a busy week of committee hearings. But some of the bills being put forward by Republican lawmakers are retreads—vetoed previously by Gov. Evers and sure to be rejected again, since lots of folks think legislators could be doing more to help struggling families rather than punishing them for losing their jobs or for simply being poor. We'll get an update from Dan Shafer. And we'll check in on stories around the Wausau area with Chad Holmes. Class, welcome to sprinter- that delightful damp windy transition from winter to spring. Chad, host of the WXCO morning show and Civic Media sports broadcaster and Jimmie, Civic Media sports editor, have been two of our favorites for this Friday segment. Today, they bring us a final update on the winter sports and a preview of spring activities. Looking ahead to spring, make sure to keep up with Wisconsin essential activities on Civic Media! Chad broadcasts for the Wausau region WXCO. Richland Center (WRCE), Park Falls (WCQM), and Baraboo (WRPQ) will also broadcast various spring sports. Stay tuned for updates on baseball beginning in just two short weeks! Can Congress get away with taking away health care from millions to fund huge tax cuts for the rich? We preview Medicaid Town Halls in Wausau, La Crosse and Eau Claire that will help organize resistance to proposed slashing cuts to Medicaid. Meanwhile, Rep. Van Orden continued to hunker down in his basement bunker, holding a virtual town hall where he can avoid answering tough questions after misleading his own constituents about Medicaid cuts he rubber stamped in Congress. We cannot win by surrendering in advance. We continue to encourage Governor Evers to veto any budget the Legislature produces that fails to expand BadgerCare. The Spring Election is around the corner and Brad Schimel rehashes voter fraud conspiracies about Milwaukee that he knows are false. So much for his phony stance as a high minded judge above politics. This week the only debate in the State Superintendent of DPI election was held by WPEN and other allies. This race remains about Jill Underly's dedicated support for improving and properly funding our public schools vs. her opponent who is a supporter of siphoning even more money to private unaccountable voucher schools. Robert educates us on a legal case against Greenpeace who was found liable for $645 million for Dakota Access Pipeline protests that has huge implications for the Constitutional right of free speech and protest. Will this be the beginning of a legal strategy to bankrupt progressive nonprofits to silence free speech and assembly? We close with a soul-searching discussion with James Causey, a longtime columnist with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, on adults forcing police officers back into Milwaukee Public Schools without ever listening to the kids.
Wisconsin Republican members of Congress are running scared from Medicaid cuts and the cowards are starting to do virtual town halls from bunkers, ducking open face-to-face dialogue with their own constituents. So much for the House of Representatives as the government closest to the people. Meanwhile House Republicans left Washington with no budget deal for a St. Patrick's Day vacation (we didn't know that was a thing), likely forcing a partial government shutdown Friday. Senate Democrats do the right thing and do not allow House Republicans to extort them into signing off on a bad deal which will give Trump and Musk a free hand to continue their unconstitutional assault on the civil service. As we are hurtling towards the critical April1st Supreme Court and Superintendent of Public Instruction elections, Crawford and Schimel debate. Was anyone listening? We welcome Citizen Action Organizer Kristie Tweed to clue us in on upcoming Medicaid Town Halls in La Crosse, Wausau, and Eau Claire later this month. Also, Citizen Action Climate Coordinator Kat Klawes joins us to discuss the path-breaking Climate Accountability Act and how you can get involved with our organizing. We also review the terrifying Mahmoud Khalil case, which reminds us of Red Scares and other dark moments in American history when civil rights were shredded.
Ever wondered how your backyard rain gauge could help improve weather forecasts and even assist farmers? The National Weather Service is calling on Wisconsin residents to join the CoCoRaHS Network (Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network) through their Rain Gauge Rally. This volunteer network of dedicated weather watchers records rainfall, snowfall, and drought conditions right from their own backyards. Whether you're a farmer, teacher, or just fascinated by the weather, your observations can make a big impact. Michelle Margraf, Observation Program Leader with the National Weather Service, says Wisconsin volunteers are already playing a key role — and now there’s a friendly rivalry with Minnesota to recruit even more observers. Your reports could be the difference-maker! Currently, about 26,000 CoCoRaHS observers share data nationwide, including several hundred in Wisconsin. However, more volunteers are needed, particularly in rural areas. Central and northern Wisconsin, including regions between Stevens Point and Eau Claire, as well as north of Wausau, have a greater need for participants. To join the network, visit www.cocorahs.org.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
I was with my ex the first time I tasted a peanut butter pie crust sundae. At that time he was not my ex, of course—he was my very new boyfriend. I was the perfect age to shout-sing Taylor Swift (when you're fifteen and somebody tells you they love you, you're gonna believe them) and mold my identity around everyone I liked, pushing against their boundaries in lieu of forming any of my own.It was a delicious sundae. I'd been to my hometown's local ice cream chain many times before—I still carry golden memories of using the uneven exterior beneath the walk-up window as a little kid rock climbing wall—but I'd never ordered anything except vanilla soft serve with krunch kote. The peanut butter pie crust was a revelation. It was his revelation. My ex knew about this delicious thing—hot fudge, peanut butter, graham cracker crumble perfection—first, and he shared it with me, and I felt that bonded us more deeply. Even when I ordered our favorite sundae without him present on the increasingly rare occasions I hung out with my high school best friend or sister, I thought about Matt. Peanut butter pie crusts were ours. Everything we did together, even just a single time, was ours. My world existed in shades of him.But then I left.I mean, it wasn't that simple, my departure. Those months, after so many years, were a snotty-teared mess. But finally I came out of “us” as “just me”, and even though we weren't yet married (I had to cancel the DJ and photographer, deposits lost) I found myself internally battling for custody. We didn't have property or pets or children. But we had our own version of a life, the kind college students can easily build: favorite restaurants and TV shows and memories. Prom photographs. Mutual friends. Peanut butter pie crust sundaes. We were too young when we started dating. (I was too young.) I'd yet to build my own sense of self, and he was too willing to act as my backstop, and so I became his shadow, his shape, his image—“Matt's girlfriend”, not “Haley as a person”.What was ours and what was his and what was mine?I wish I could tell you I ordered the damn sundaes and stopped thinking about him. That I still played “On My Way” by Phil Collins just because I liked it. That I said “these preferences are pretty tiny and trivial, anyway, and they don't have to have anything to do with him”. In reality? My stamina improved, and I jogged faster over time, but the memories stayed on my heels. When I started dating Sean, we went to our my beloved ice cream chain before I was ready. “We passed a soft serve place that sells one pound cones!” my new boyfriend announced when I arrived to stay with him and a few other friends at an up-north cabin. “We have to go!”“I grew up in Wausau! Of course I know Briq's,” I said. It still makes me think of Matt, I didn't.I told Sean to order the peanut butter pie crust. The employees made it wrong—no hot fudge—which was a disappointing introduction to the deliciousness. But I realized, sitting there with our friends as Sophie joked about how Sean can “do bad things to ice cream” (he did indeed order the one pound version), that to them peanut butter pie crust sundaes were Haley's recommendation. They were my preference. Just mine.It was a start.Still, over the years when we visited my hometown and ordered Briq's, stubborn and unwelcome recollections sometimes insisted on tagging along. You build new memories on top of old ones, you round out your life, but there's no rewrite button. Reclamation is a slow process.Until finally… the old foundation just crumbles. And you get in there to chuck out the debris and realize you breathe so much better without the moldy stench you'd somehow grown used to and erroneously accepted as a fact of life. You shout-sing from a later Taylor Swift album, now: I think I am finally clean. This past summer Sean and I started making homemade peanut butter pie crust sundaes. The recipe: Melt peanut butter and dark chocolate chips in a mug, stirring to a smooth consistency. Scoop a hearty amount of Häagen-Dazs vanilla bean (vanilla bean, not just vanilla) ice cream on top. Sprinkle crushed pie crust (we like to buy the miniature premade ones in a six pack) over the whole thing. Then savor, passing back and forth after every spoonful, sharing the joy. These sundaes are a new ours. They are not just an experience we happened to share once, to which I assigned unreasonable importance—they are an intentional creation inspired by old tastes and made even better. A tiny thing, to be sure, but a thing we built together. One of many, many things we built together. This is a public episode. In this powerful and deeply personal episode of Keep it Humane: The Podcast, hosts Daniel Ettinger and Ashley Bishop sit down with their very own co-host, Ashlee Bishop, to discuss the unexpected and challenging turn in her career as an animal control officer.Ashlee opens up about losing her position as Wausau's full-time humane officer following a controversial city council decision. The move, pushed forward by the police department to restructure animal control services, replaced Ashlee's full-time role with three part-time positions — a shift that city leaders claim will expand services without increasing costs. We delve into the emotional and professional impact this decision has had on Ashlee, as well as the community's strong reaction. Former council member Tom Kilian voiced concerns over the council's failure to implement the original plan, which would have included Ashlee and two part-time animal control officers. Instead, the city opted for a broader approach, assigning community service and code enforcement officers to handle animal-related calls alongside other duties.Ashlee shares her firsthand experience of what it means to be a humane officer, the importance of dedicated animal control professionals, and the real-life consequences of blending animal welfare with unrelated code enforcement responsibilities. This episode sheds light not only on Ashlee's personal journey but also on the larger issue of how cities balance budgets, public safety, and animal welfare. It's a must-listen for anyone invested in the future of animal control and the vital role of compassionate, trained professionals in our communities.Tune in to hear Ashlee's story — raw, unfiltered, and eye-opening.

It was the kind of place where parents felt safe letting their kids ride their bikes until the streetlights flickered on. But in the fall of 1995, that sense of security was shattered. A girl vanished without a trace—one moment, she was there, a bright, imaginative 13-year-old with dreams of becoming a writer. The next, she was gone. Her name was Jessyca Mullenberg.Jessyca's life had already seen its share of changes. After her parents divorced, she moved to Wausau, Wisconsin, with her mother, stepfather, and two younger brothers. She missed Eau Claire, missed the familiarity of her old neighborhood. But she still visited her father often, spending weekends with him in the house she once called home. It was during those visits that she met a man who would change the course of her life forever.Support the show

On August 11th, 2009, 15-year-old Kayla Berg, after a fairly unremarkable day of hanging out with friends, went out with a trusted family friend, named Kevin Kielcheski. Although Kevin was 9 years older, Kayla had known Kevin virtually her entire life, was somewhat of a 'protective older brother-type,' and there was nothing unusual about them spending time together, according to her friends and family. Kayla has never returned home. After 16 years of investigations and searches, authorities have been unable to find her. Kevin, who is the last person known to be with her, reports he dropped her off at a friend's house, though has been unable to give much more information. Scott and Mickey discuss the missing persons case of Kayla Berg, some of the theories about what may have happened to her, the important players, and ask you for more help.
