Episode 43 | Bob Fieck, CHRO, Wausau Supply Company Grit Is a Choice: Execution and Servant Leadership in the Building Products Industry Bob Fieck has spent 30 years stepping into situations most people would step away from -- broken operations, underfunded startups, businesses in the red, and organizations navigating major cultural change. Today, as CHRO of Wausau Supply Company, he brings that same mindset to one of the LBM industry's most dynamic and fast-growing organizations. Along the way, Bob developed a three-part leadership framework centered on execution, grit, and servant leadership -- and he breaks down exactly what each one means in practice. Topics covered in this episode: Why his mentor pushed him into HR when he wanted nothing to do with it Managing a two-month strike while sleeping at the plant Being hired before the company existed -- and building an HR function from a hotel conference room The 90-day execution model that transformed an underperforming business unit What Angela Duckworth's research on grit reveals about who actually succeeds How Wausau Supply is building an employer-of-choice culture across multiple brands and distribution centers Why his grandson's Pop Warner football schedule is the real reason he came back to Wisconsin

There are companies that sell shoes. And then there are companies that shape the way an entire generation experiences them. Eastbay was the latter... and most people have no idea how improbable the whole thing was.Art Juedes and Rick Gering started Eastbay out of a store in Wausau, Wisconsin. Two coaches with 16 years of combined college education, zero business courses between them, and a vision that shoe stores in this country were failing athletes. No one specialized. No one had inventory. No one knew what they were talking about when you called. So Art and Rick decided they would be the ones who did. What followed was one of the most consequential stories in sneaker history... one that most of us lived through without ever knowing the people behind it.In this episode of Outside The Box, Nick sits down with Art and Rick to talk about the moment Nike pulled 40% of their business overnight because Eastbay was too successful at mail order, how Shaquille O'Neal showing up to a Nike meeting in all Eastbay gear helped get them the exclusive back, the tent sales in Wausau where Air Jordans moved out of a parking lot and lines stretched for half a mile, Kevin Plank pitching Under Armour to them before Under Armour was anything, and why they invested $100,000 in a digital camera in 1989 so they could produce a catalog every three weeks while Phil Knight was asking how they did it so fast.Nick's personal connection to Eastbay runs deep... four siblings fighting over one catalog until his mom finally ordered a fifth. Rhinelander to look at allowing ATV/UTV use on Lincoln Street, The Bridge Street Mission takes over homeless shelter duties in Wausau, Wisconsin had more severe weather in April than seen in decades
Immigration enforcement continues to be an issue that Wisconsin farms and agribusinesses are monitoring. Sam Moheban, immigration specialist and attorney at Wausau based, Ruder Ware law firm says things are changing. Moheban tells Pam Jahnke that instead of focusing on raids, which are expensive and require a lot of staff, ICE is pivoting to enfocement through paperwork. Specifically Moheban says they are reviewing I-9 forms. These are the forms all employers use to verify that their employees can legally be employed. Moheban says now, if there's an error found on that paperwork, employers can be fined immediately. He also says that the government can now serve notice of inspection via certified mail or personal service on any business in the country. Severe weather starts off our Monday. Stu Muck says there's a tornado warning in effect for a chunk of south central Wisconsin this morning with gusty storms on the way. Wisconsin dairy farmers had been hoping to restore whole milk to the school lunch program. That finally happened in January when the "Whole Milk For Healthy Kids" was signed into law. Kiley Allan talks with Darren VonRuden, president of the WI Farmers Union, about the struggles schools are facing finding the whole milk. VonRuden says the milk is out there, it just needs to find its way to the correct processing line. WI Ag Secretary, Randy Romanski, has been honored as the 2026 Distinguished Agriculturist by UW-River Falls. Pam Jahnke reports. Spring is a busy time on Wisconsin farms. Stephanie Hoff takes a visit to Eugsters Farm Market in Stoughton to investigate what's new. She finds Kat Eugster very busy with new baby lambs, goats and other farm babies. Eugster explains how the tempo picks up with round the clock care. Eugsters is also in the process of developing a vineyard they'll be opening in 2027.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Gardeners are now ready to proceed with all the plans they've been making for 2026. When they start, questions are likely to follow. Kiley Allan finds out what common questions are from Lisa Johnson, Horticulture Educator with Dane County Extension Service. Due to climate change and unpredictable weather, gardeners should use a soil thermometer rather than specific dates to decide when to plant. Planting too early in cold soil can cause seeds and tubers to rot. Johnson says for early crops like peas and potatoes, mid-April is a general starting point in southern Wisconsin, provided the soil is warm enough. For warm-weather crops like tomatoes and peppers, wait until after May 20th and ensure soil is at least 60°F and nighttime air stays above 50°F.Unfortunatley there's another swath of wet weather moving toward Wisconsin. Stu Muck, ag meterologist, says western Wisconsin could pick up more than an inch of rain after a warm Thursday passes. Wisconsin potatoes are being featured at Walmart thanks to their "Healthy Grown" label. Andy Dierks, fourth generation potato farmer in Coloma tells Stephanie Hoff how it happened. Healthy Grown is now officially recognized by Walmart, meaning Wisconsin potato shippers who are certified automatically meet the retailer’s rigorous sustainability requirements. Members receive direct, one-on-one consulting with UW specialists to review herbicide and fungicide programs, helping manage resistance and environmental impacts. The program provides a unique safety net for navigating the Endangered Species Act, helping growers determine specific mitigation points and product choices for their specific acreage. Even farms without traditional "wild" land like streams or hunting grounds can qualify for ecosystem service credits through pollinator plantings and tailored conservation efforts. With a 30-year history, the program is successfully transitioning from Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to Regenerative Agriculture to meet the shifting demands of the global food industry. Sam Moheban, immigration specialist with Ruder Ware law firm in Wausau tells Pam Jahnke that there's some new direction he's seeing immigration reform. Moheban calls it "whole of government" approach. Now the federal government is focusing on enforcement of I-9 paperwork used by every employer in the United States to attest that employees can legally be employed. He says new guidelines allow federal officials to service notice of inspection via certified mail or personal service. No raids - just paperwork and potential fines. How many businesses do you work with that have been around for 50 years? In Wisconsin we talk a lot about generational farms, but what about the generational businesses that are part of the fabric that make agriculture's success. Cory Berg is the president and CEO of QLF. Quality Liquid Feeds, headquartered in Dodgeville, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year. Berg tells Pam Jahnke about how his father sacrificed to start QLF. Today, although the company has a national footprint, it stays committed to keeping its headquarters in Dodgeville. Today, QLF is responsbile for buying around 70% of all the molasses produced in the state of Louisianna. That's supporting more than just Wisconsin farms.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

David Boice is a faith-based storyteller and traveler originally from Wausau, Wisconsin, and the creator of the YouTube series 52 Churches in 52 Weeks. What began as a personal search for a spiritual home became a nationwide journey through nearly 200 congregations, documenting not just what churches teach, but how they receive those walking in for the first time. His work offers a unique window into the lived experience of faith, community, and belonging across modern Christianity. Through these road stories, David has developed a thoughtful perspective on the subtle dynamics that shape religious communities—hospitality, fellowship, teaching, and the process by which a stranger becomes an insider. His content blends spiritual curiosity with candid reflection, inviting viewers to engage faith in a more personal and experiential way. In April 2024, David was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He recently relocated to Utah and is now developing 52 Temples in 52 Weeks, a companion project exploring temple worship, symbolism, and covenant faith. Alongside his content, he has used his platform to support causes such as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. When he's not traveling or filming, David can usually be found writing, editing, or wrestling with deeper questions—like whether dad jokes qualify as a spiritual gift. The conversation focuses on the impact of church culture, the power of a welcoming environment, and the lessons Latter-day Saint leaders can learn from the strengths and weaknesses of other faith traditions. 00:03:38 – David’s Background and Spiritual Journey 00:05:51 – Fallout with the Lutheran Church 00:07:45 – The Idea of Visiting 52 Churches 00:10:05 – Documenting the Church Visits 00:12:17 – The Need for Community and Church 00:13:41 – First Visit to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 00:18:25 – Insights on Church Culture and Leadership 00:21:02 – The Importance of Welcoming Visitors 00:22:04 – Generational Disconnect in Churches 00:25:24 – The Role of Missionaries in Church Culture 00:26:16 – Cleaning Assignments and Ownership 00:30:16 – Communion Practices Across Different Churches 00:32:23 – The Significance of Communion in Worship 00:36:19 – Differences in Communion Timing and Structure 00:40:03 – The Role of Communion in Community and Faith 00:45:09 – Unique Takeaways from Church Visits and Experiences Key Insights Welcoming Environment: David emphasizes the importance of a communal atmosphere in churches. He found that Latter-day Saint congregations were notably more welcoming, with members actively engaging with visitors, which contrasted sharply with his experiences in other churches. Communion Practices: The sacrament in Latter-day Saint services is conducted early in the meeting, which David found refreshing compared to other traditions where communion is often the main event. This practice fosters a sense of community and shared purpose. Involvement and Ownership: David appreciated the opportunities for active participation in the Latter-day Saint community, such as cleaning assignments, which gave him a sense of ownership and responsibility within the ward. Generational Engagement: He noted the generational dynamics in church attendance, observing that many mainline Protestant churches struggle to engage younger generations, while Latter-day Saint congregations maintain a strong sense of family and community. Cultural Differences: David highlighted the differences in how various churches approach worship, including the use of sensory elements in Catholic services versus the more straightforward approach in many Protestant services. Leadership Applications Foster a Welcoming Culture: Latter-day Saint leaders can prioritize creating a welcoming environment by encouraging members to actively greet and engage with newcomers, ensuring that visitors feel valued and included. Encourage Participation: Leaders should provide opportunities for members to take on responsibilities within the ward, fostering a sense of ownership and community involvement that can enhance engagement and commitment. Focus on Community Building: By emphasizing the importance of family and community in church activities, leaders can help bridge generational gaps and create a more inclusive atmosphere that resonates with all members. This week we put the tragic events and courageous resistance to tyranny in the Twin Cities in the context of our failing democracy. A new report from the Urban Institute shows that Wisconsin has fallen behind other states in income over the past 50 years, especially compared to our neighbors in Minnesota and Illinois. How does the failure of Wisconsin's economic policy relate to the vulnerability of democracy? We assess the role of the Democratic Primary for Governor, and the active involvement of organized groups such as Citizen Action of Wisconsin, in charting a new policy course that truly addresses the income and affordability crisis. We also give a detailed update of the data center controversies across the state. We invite all Battleground Wisconsin listeners to attend Citizen Action's Governor Forums in La Crosse, Eau Claire, Wausau, Green Bay, and Milwaukee.

Many Wisconsin farms and agribusinesses are caught between a rock and a hard spot managing their labor needs. With increased presence of immigration officials in the Twin Cities, more farms are asking questions about how to protect their employees. Sam Moheban, Immigration specialist with Wausau firm, Ruder Ware. Pam Jahnke visits with him about the unique challenges dairy farms face managing employees. He says he’s keeping an eye on any legislative or policy changes at the federal level that might give farms, especially dairies, a clear path to managing the workforce. Unfortunately, Moheban says right now farms must work with either the H2A or H2B programs – neither of which allow for foreign born workers to be in the country year round. Of course dairy farms require employees taking care of animals and milking cows year round – and that’s the rub. He advises farms to double check their 1-9 documentation for all employees, and post "private property" signs, perhaps with barriers, to keep agents from entering property without notice. Moheban says farms should create a system and protocols on how to deal with officials if that visit occurs. He also says communicating with employees about what’s being done to protect them is a critical piece of the plan to make sure that employees are showing up for work every day. Get outdoor tasks done today if you can, because there's a drastic weather change on the horizon for tomorrow. Stu Muck says sub-zero temperatures will make being outdoors Friday and into Saturday dangerous. Weather didn't stop more than 300 farmers from across the state from gathering for Ag Day at the Capitol. Stephanie Hoff was there and says the theme was about bringing stability to farming. Topics included expanding affordable health care, improved market access, bringing more ag professionals into the state like veterinarians and tax credits for domestically produced fuels. Jason Mugnaini, executive director for the WI Farm Bureau, explains why each is critical for stability. Dairy has seen a glimmer of good news over the past few days. Mike North, dairy analyst with EverAg, joins Pam Jahnke to discuss what's driving the increase in prices for block cheese and butter. North questions whether this is true demand, or just a short-term blip on the trade screen. Meanwhile the European Union milk production keeps rolling on.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dairy farmers are wondering what will improve in 2026. Jill Welke finds Dr. Leonard Polzin, UW-River Falls Extension Dairy Specialist, at the annual Western WI Bankers Conference. Polzin says while world milk production stays high, producers should expect prices to stay low. Bitterly cold wind chills will impact daily chores and travel this week around Wisconsin. Stu Muck says it'll take until at least Wednesday before there's a break. The antenna are up for many Wisconsin agribusinesses and farms with a large population of immigration agents in the Twin Cities. What do farms need to do to protect their employees? Pam Jahnke gets some pointers from Sam Moheban, immigration specialist at Ruder Ware law firm in Wausau. Moheban says any employer should be double checking the accuracy of their mandatory I-9 forms from all employees. After that, he recommends farms post signs, and have a plan if ICE agents show up at their farm gate. The general public's being invited to join in the tasting fun of the World Championship Cheese event coming up March 3-4 in Madison. Pam Jahnke shares the details.Wisconsin dairy farmer Carolyn Alsteen joins the show to discuss the Born to Dairy campaign, a vibrant celebration of the grit, humor, and creativity that defines America’s Dairyland. Discover how Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin is putting checkoff dollars to work, using unique personas to bridge the gap with consumers, and highlighting the authentic stories behind your favorite milk, cheese, and butter. DFW is preparing to launch 24 new farmer personas in 2026, including Carolyn's: Churned & Burned Farm Fit Farmer! Paid for by Dairy Farmers of WI.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
