Summer cometh: the grills get scraped clean, the buns are split, and hungry Americans get set to boil or broil their wursts, wieners, and sausages. In the summer of 2021, Jamie Loftus drove from coast to coast, tasting the vast array of hot dogs that America has to offer, consuming as many as four a day—and in one notable (or regrettable) instance, five. Chicago-style and the Coney Island special; drive-through and deli; chili and chile: Loftus devoured them all. Her ensuing book, Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs, brings the glory and the gory. It may be the first to detail not only the different genders of pickle jars one can buy at a gas station, but also the horrific treatment of animals and workers at slaughterhouses, conditions that got distinctly worse during the pandemic. Loftus—stand-up comedian, TV writer, and creator of such illustrious one-season podcasts as “My Year in Mensa” and “Ghost Church”—joins us to talk about the wild world of that iconic American food. This episode originally aired in 2023.Go beyond the episode:Jamie Loftus's Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot DogsProPublica's exposé of the meatpacking industry during Covid revealed awful conditions, and government collusionDelight your senses with PBS's classic A Hot Dog ProgramA few of the varieties mentioned in this episode:The Texas Tavern (not in Texas)Hungarian hot dogs … in ToledoThe baloney-wrapped hot dogs at Attman'sWhat'll ya have at the Varsity?Ben's Chili Bowl, where half-smokes and chili dogs reignThe Sonoran hot dogBut Loftus's top five are:Rutt's Hut in Clifton, New JerseyHot Dog Ruiz Los Chipilones in Tucson, ArizonaKing Jong Grillin in Portland, OregonThe hot dog carts across the street from the Crypto.com Arena, or near Union Station in Los Angeles, CaliforniaTexas Tavern in Roanoke, VirginiaTune in every other week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. MERCH Pre-Order - https://nonmembersshop.com/Happy National Eat What You Want Day! We kick off the episode by motivating everyone to stay consistent with their workouts (Erin is officially on week 5 of her pull up journey!) before diving into a highly specific, heated rant about deceptive grocery store produce bags, why are tangerines and limes sold in color matching mesh bags to hide the rotting fruit?! We also celebrate the official launch of our merch store (grab your koozies, hoodies, and mystery trinkets while you can!) and pop open a Recess Mood drink to calm down. Then, we get into the main event: Erin's massive, multi-day recap of the Dick's Sporting Goods Varsity Team brand trip in Tampa. Event planning is officially a sport, proven by Erin walking into a hotel room stocked with a personalized cake, $500 in Stanley gear, and a daily wardrobe. Erin explains how she entered "survival mode" to become a mega extrovert, surviving a upscale carnival complete with a Ferris wheel, and an Adidas yacht party featuring custom Sambas, permanent jewelry, and a saxophone player jamming to Bad Bunny. She also chilled in a speakeasy movie theater in custom pajamas, and finally got to wear her sparkly Adidas tracksuit to a jaw dropping banquet featuring aerial yoga and a hidden 7 piece band. The physical toll of the trip was brutal, featuring a blazing hot "On" HIIT class with "no-nonsense Giovanni" (where Erin and the gym bros were secretly collapsing behind his back) and an insanely hard Pilates session with Molly Seidel's sister, Izzy. Erin also defends her "Grease Girl" status by refusing to wear the provided orange short shorts in the sun. Finally, we debut our highly anticipated on site interview with the Savannah Bananas player who famously face planted doing a backflip on live TV. He reveals the shocking behind-the-scenes details of the crash, the concussion, and the CNN producer's terrible reaction to the blood. We wrap up with a quick rant about the fever dream that is the Tampa airport and beg our listeners to prove to Mike that he isn't just broadcasting to an empty void.

https://teachhoops.com/ The decision to move a player from Junior Varsity (JV) to Varsity is one of the most consequential choices a head coach makes during the mid-season grind. It's not just about rewarding talent; it's about Strategic Utility. Too often, coaches "call up" a young standout only to have them sit behind a senior for 30 minutes a night. In this episode, we tackle the "Billion Dollar Question" of player promotion: Is it better for a sophomore to dominate 32 minutes at the JV level or play 4 minutes of high-intensity "garbage time" on Varsity? To build a sustainable program, you must prioritize Developmental Minutes over the prestige of the Varsity roster. 1. The Positional Difference A "Promotion Strategy" shouldn't be one-size-fits-all. Post players often benefit from an early move because their development is tied to physicality; battling a 220-lb senior in practice every day will accelerate their growth more than dominating a smaller JV opponent. Guards, however, need the ball in their hands. If moving a young point guard to Varsity means they become a "floor spacer" who never initiates the offense, you might be stunted their "Decision IQ." 2. The WIAA "Three-Halves" Reality For our Wisconsin coaches navigating the 18-minute half era, remember the technical "Safety Valve." Under WIAA rules, a player can participate in up to three halves of basketball on the same day. This allows you to "Slow-Cook" your prospects. Let them play a full JV game (2 halves) and dress for Varsity to get their feet wet in the final minutes (1 half). This maximizes their "Rep Density" while acclimating them to the speed of the Varsity game. 3. The Cultural Impact on the "Vets" Promoting a young player is a "Relational Disruptor." Before the move is public, you must have two conversations: The "Promotion" Talk: Set the expectation that they are there to earn time, not just occupy a seat. The "Survivor" Talk: Speak to the Varsity seniors whose minutes might be impacted. Use Jay Wright's "Value Your Role" philosophy—explain how this move strengthens the "collective" and pushes the intensity of practice. If the veterans don't "buy in," the young player will be isolated on an island. The "Minutes vs. Level" Matrix: Knowing when the competition outweighs the playing time. WIAA Technicals: Navigating the three-halves rule to maximize development. Parent Management: Ensuring the move is seen as a "challenge" rather than a "guarantee." Role Integrity: How to keep your Varsity bench engaged when a young player jumps the line.

Ep 1339 Why "Faster and Stronger" is Only Half the Story of the Next Level

The 5 Minute Basketball Coaching Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2026 7:50

https://teachhoops.com/ When players and coaches talk about moving from Middle School to High School, or High School to College, the standard refrain is: "The game is faster and the players are stronger." While physically true, this is a surface-level observation. The real "jump" isn't just about 40-yard dash times or bench press maxes; it is about the "Compression of the Decision Window." At the next level, the "open" passing lane that stayed open for two seconds in JV now closes in 0.5 seconds in Varsity. The "Speed of the Game" is actually the Speed of Thought. If a player has to "think" about where to pass, they are already too late. You must train your athletes to move from "Conscious Competence" to "Unconscious Execution" so their bodies can keep up with the pace of the level above them. The "Strength" element is also frequently misunderstood. It isn't about having "Beach Muscles" or a high-volume chest day; it is about "Functional Contact Balance" and "Lower Body Anchor." At the next level, defenders don't just "reach"—they "displace." They use their hips and core to knock an offensive player off their line. To survive this, a player needs a low center of gravity and the ability to absorb contact without losing their "shooting pocket." In the mid-season January grind, the teams that are "stronger" are simply the ones that can maintain their technical form while being physically harassed. We often say: "Strength doesn't win the game, but a lack of it will certainly lose it." Finally, to prepare for the "Next Level," your practices must utilize "Over-Speed Training." This means creating drills that are harder and faster than the game itself. If you only practice at "Game Speed," you are only preparing for the level you are currently at. Run your 5-on-5 scrimmages with a 12-second shot clock or add a "Second Ball" to a transition drill to force the brain to process chaotic information. Use your TeachHoops member calls to "audit" your intensity: are your "A-Team" players being challenged, or are they "cruising" because they are the fastest in the gym? By artificially increasing the "Stress Load" in practice, you ensure that when they finally step onto that "Faster, Stronger" floor, the game actually feels like it has slowed down for them. https://teachhoops.com/ Moving players between levels—Varsity, JV, or Freshman—is one of the most politically charged aspects of coaching, yet it is essential for the long-term health of your program. The "Elevator Model" of roster management ensures that players are competing at the level that matches their current skill set and physical maturity. However, to avoid the "parent-coach friction" that often accompanies these moves, you must establish a "Fluidity Policy" during your pre-season meeting. If players and parents understand from Day One that rosters are "living documents" and that a move "down" is a developmental opportunity for more minutes, while a move "up" is a reward for consistent production, you remove the "stigma" and replace it with a "Growth Mindset." A key strategic pillar is "Developmental Priority." Often, a talented sophomore is better served playing 28 minutes at the JV level—where they are the primary ball-handler and "go-to" scorer—than playing 4 minutes of "garbage time" on Varsity. To "win" this transition, you must provide the player with a "Tactical Roadmap." Use your TeachHoops member calls to "audit" your "Swing Player" rotation. When you move a player "down," frame it as a "Leadership Assignment": "We need you to go down and anchor the JV defense so you can learn how to lead a unit." When they move "up," emphasize their "Role Clarity": "Your job on Varsity is to be our elite '3-and-D' specialist." By giving the move a specific purpose, you maintain the player's "Buy-In" and focus. Finally, you must master the "Art of the Mid-Season Evaluation." The "January Lull" is often when rosters stagnate. A great coach is always looking for the "JV Spark"—the player who has outgrown their level and is ready for the "Varsity Speed." When making these moves, utilize "Objective Data" like "Practice Points," "Defensive Deflections," and "Film Grade" to justify the decision. This removes the "perception of favoritism" and reinforces a culture of "Merit-Based Opportunity." By being the "Communicator-in-Chief" of your program's roster, you ensure that every athlete is in the "Sweet Spot" of their development, preparing your entire program to peak during the postseason. “God could not be everywhere, so he created Mothers.” This adage could not ring more true when it comes to the life of C.J. Taylor. Her life story could be made into an Oscar-winning biopic, and believe me, it's just a matter of time. She is a divorced single mom of three, an attorney, and a football coach with over 20 years of experience - she is the first female coach in the Snoop Dogg's youth football league, is the Former Director of Football Operations and Assistant Coach at Los Angeles Southwest College, and was an the Junior Varsity HEAD COACH and Assistant Coach on Varsity at Verbum Dei High School, a private all boys school in southern California. She has generated more than 45 millions dollars, sending hundreds of student-athletes to college on scholarships with over 300 NCAA programs including with Marist College, Univ. of Texas, TCU, Vanderbilt, FAMU, LSU, CAL, Boise State, USC, UCLA, Notre Dame, Syracuse and more. She has single handedly raised three tremendously successful children: her daughter Mi-Calynn is a California State Licensed Nurse who is on the front line during the COVID pandemic. Caylin is a 2017 Rhodes Scholar, 2014 Fulbright Scholar, D-1 Student-Athlete and graduate of Texas Christian University, 2019 graduate of Oxford University, a current PhD candidate, and author of the NY Times bestselling memoir, A Dream Too Big. Last but not least Chase Moore, an Archer Fellow, Children's Defense Fund recipient, and a recent D1Student-Athlete at the University of Texas at Austin victor of the 2019 Sugar Bowl, and member of the AFCA Allstate Good Works Team. Though the family has witnessed many glory days, life has not been easy. As written in an ESPN profile by Senior Writer Adam Rittenberg, CJ shares, "We used to have a five-bath, four-bedroom house and seven vehicles. We had what looked like the Cosby life. It was like a Monet: From a distance, it looked beautiful, but up close, it was all messed up." Inside those walls, C.J.'s now ex-husband, Louis Moore, was psychologically abusive toward her. She twice saw him physically abuse Caylin, who was just 2 at the time. In 2000, she left him, taking the children to live with her mother in Carson, on the border of Compton. She filed for divorce but still feared for their safety. She always told her kids: “We may live in the hood, but the hood doesn't live in us.”In 2004, she went to the hospital for heart surgery and came back in even worse shape. She was assaulted while being sedated, and later slipped into a depression. In 2009, her ex-husband was convicted of murder. He had a drunken argument with his girlfriend and fatally shot her with a rifle. After weeks of her kids feeding her and bathing her, her middle child told her, “Get up, Mom. You've got to live. You've got three kids. We need you!” That's exactly what she did and she continues to give every bit of her soul to her children every single day. Ep 2812 How Do You Navigate the Challenges of Moving Players Up a Level Mid-Season?

Basketball Coach Unplugged ( A Basketball Coaching Podcast)

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 16, 2026 10:48

https://teachhoops.com/ Moving a player up from Junior Varsity to Varsity or from a middle school squad to high school is a pivotal moment that requires careful management of both the individual and the team dynamic. When a player is "called up," the primary focus shouldn't just be on their physical talent, but on their ability to handle the increased speed of the game and the higher complexity of the scouting reports. It is essential to have a clear conversation with the player about their new role, which may transition from being a primary scorer on the lower level to a specialist or defensive "spark plug" on the higher level. By setting these expectations early, you help the athlete adjust their mindset and avoid the frustration that often comes with a decrease in playing time during the transition period. The integration process also involves managing the "locker room chemistry" of both teams involved in the move. For the team receiving the new player, current rotation players may feel threatened by the addition of a younger or newer talent, which can lead to friction if not addressed. As a coach, you must emphasize that the move is being made to strengthen the program's overall "competitive floor" and that everyone's role is vital to the team's postseason success. For the team the player is leaving, it's an opportunity for other athletes to step into leadership roles. Balancing these social dynamics is just as important as the tactical integration, as a unified locker room is often the deciding factor in how quickly a newly moved-up player can find their rhythm. Finally, moving players up provides a "developmental laboratory" that benefits the long-term health of the entire program. It sends a powerful message to your younger athletes that hard work and high "Basketball IQ" are rewarded, creating a culture of internal competition. Use the first few weeks of the move to provide the player with extra film study and "mental reps" to catch them up on Varsity-level terminology and defensive rotations. By the time the postseason arrives, this player will have gained invaluable experience against higher-level competition, making them a more versatile asset for the championship run. Ultimately, a successful call-up is a win for the player's growth and a strategic advantage for the coach looking to maximize the program's talent pool. In a recent episode of "Discovering Grayslake," recorded at the Grayslake Area Public Library, the host sat down with team members Janai, Addy, Ella, and parent Megan Willhite to discuss their upcoming trip to nationals in Orlando, the hard work behind their success, and the powerful role of community support. This blog post dives deep into the main themes of the episode—dedication, teamwork, fundraising, and the impact of community—offering actionable insights and expert advice for anyone involved in youth sports, dance, or community initiatives. Whether you're a dancer, a parent, or a supporter, there's something here for you. 1. Earning a Spot at Nationals: The Power of Teamwork and Leadership How They Did It Choreographing a Winning Routine:** The team earned their nationals bid at the UDA summer camp at Northern Illinois University, where they performed a routine choreographed in part by junior Ella. Their first-place win was a historic moment for the program. Leadership from Seniors:** Seniors like Janai played a pivotal role, setting the tone for the season and inspiring underclassmen to push harder. Actionable Advice Empower Student Leadership:** Allowing students to choreograph and lead fosters ownership and pride. Encourage upperclassmen to mentor younger teammates. Set Clear, Ambitious Goals:** The team's focus on reaching nationals gave everyone a shared purpose. Set specific, challenging goals to unite your group. Expert Insight "When you have younger people coming up behind you, it encourages more to join. Success breeds success."   — Discovering Grayslake Host 2. Fundraising: Building Community and Teaching Life Skills The Challenge High Costs:** Each dancer faces nearly $2,000 in expenses for the trip, not including food. Creative Fundraising:** The team organized bake sales, bingo nights, and participated in community events like the Grayslake tree lighting and skate nights. Lessons Learned Community Outreach:** Addy shared her experience going door-to-door on Center Street, learning valuable communication and fundraising skills. Gratitude and Generosity:** Parent Megan highlighted the overwhelming support from local businesses and residents. Actionable Advice Diversify Fundraising Efforts:** Don't rely on a single event. Mix traditional (bake sales) and experiential (bingo nights, community performances) fundraisers. Engage the Community:** Involve local businesses and make fundraising a team effort. Personal outreach (like going door-to-door) builds relationships and teaches responsibility. Express Gratitude:** Always thank donors and supporters publicly and privately. Gratitude strengthens community ties. Expert Insight "Fundraising isn't just about the money—it's about teaching responsibility, teamwork, and perseverance."   — Megan Willhite, Dance Team Parent 3. The Demands of Competition: Commitment and Time Management A Grueling Schedule Early Mornings and Long Days:** Practices start as early as 6:30 a.m., and competition days can last from dawn until mid-afternoon for a two-minute performance. Balancing Academics and Athletics:** Dancers juggle schoolwork, rehearsals, and competitions, often requesting extra practices to perfect routines. Actionable Advice Prioritize Time Management:** Use planners or digital calendars to balance school, dance, and personal time. Practice with Purpose:** Focus on quality over quantity in rehearsals. Set specific goals for each practice session. Support Each Other:** Encourage open communication about stress and workload. Peer support is crucial during busy seasons. Expert Insight "The season starts with spring auditions, continues through summer and fall, and peaks in winter. It's a marathon, not a sprint."   — Megan Willhite 4. The Value of the Experience: College, Confidence, and Lifelong Memories Looking Ahead College Opportunities:** Janai is heading to Cleary University on a dance scholarship. Ella is attending college clinics and reaching out to coaches, while Addy is keeping her options open. Leverage Achievements:** Highlight national-level participation in college applications and interviews. Celebrate Every Win:** Take time to acknowledge both big and small victories throughout the season. Expert Insight "Soak it all in—it'll be over just like that. These are the moments you'll remember."   — Discovering Grayslake Host 5. By the autumn of 1944, the Allies had driven across France and Belgium and reached the borders of Germany. Ahead of them lay the Rhine — a vast natural barrier and the last line of defence protecting the heart of the Reich. What followed was some of the most intense and costly fighting of the war in Western Europe. From the bitter battles around Aachen and the Hürtgen Forest, through the crossing operations of Plunder and Varsity, to the dramatic capture of the bridge at Remagen, the campaign for the Rhineland was brutal, chaotic, and often overshadowed by the more famous Battle of the Bulge. Yet it was here, on both sides of the Rhine, that the final collapse of Nazi Germany truly began. To help tell that story, I'm joined by military historian Anthony Tucker-Jones, author of Rhineland, which charts the campaign from the German border battles of late 1944 through to the end of the war in 1945.
