For decades, kids across the south have dreamed of wearing the Carolina uniform every time they pick up a basketball. Jackson Watkins lived that dream. As a student who made the JV squad in Chapel Hill and eventually walked on to the Varsity roster, Watkins's ride gave him rivalry wins, a Final Four, and other experiences that most couldn't imagine. His journey led to his new book, "Dream On - From Basketball to Biscuits", and he joins Joey Powell to talk about all that led to it. The book is now available for preorder on Shopify: https://dreamonbook.myshopify.com/products/dream-on-paperback The Inside Carolina Podcast network features a wide range of current UNC sports topics, from game previews and instant postgame analysis, to recruiting breakdowns. Varsity athletes face hundreds of head impacts each season, some big enough to cause a concussion, others so small they barely register. But science is suggesting that even these quiet hits that don't cause concussions may quietly reshape the brain. In this episode, we dive into the neuroscience of concussive and subconcussive impacts. We unpack what science is revealing about how the athlete brain changes and what this means for the future of sport, safety, and long-term brain health. Coljae Berry is a second-year MSc student in the Centre for Neuroscience Studies at Queen's University, working under the supervision of Dr. Cook. In collaboration with the Queen's Varsity Football Team, his research investigates how repeated non-concussive impacts affect white matter microstructure and sensorimotor function in collegiate football players. He hopes to raise awareness for player safety and educate the public about the potential risks and long-term effects of playing football. Outside of his research, Coljae is passionate about rehabilitation for neurodegenerative diseases and traumatic brain injuries. He is also an active advocate for Black student voices on campus. By the autumn of 1944, the Allies had driven across France and Belgium and reached the borders of Germany. Ahead of them lay the Rhine — a vast natural barrier and the last line of defence protecting the heart of the Reich. What followed was some of the most intense and costly fighting of the war in Western Europe. From the bitter battles around Aachen and the Hürtgen Forest, through the crossing operations of Plunder and Varsity, to the dramatic capture of the bridge at Remagen, the campaign for the Rhineland was brutal, chaotic, and often overshadowed by the more famous Battle of the Bulge. Yet it was here, on both sides of the Rhine, that the final collapse of Nazi Germany truly began. To help tell that story, I'm joined by military historian Anthony Tucker-Jones, author of Rhineland, which charts the campaign from the German border battles of late 1944 through to the end of the war in 1945. Rhineland is also available on Audible and Spotify. patreon.com/ww2podcast

So There I Was dives into the UPS MD-11 crash, compressor stalls, and why some jets are “varsity airplanes.” Fig kicks things off with a flaming T-45 compressor stall story, then we walk through what we know so far about the UPS MD-11 crash, V1 decision speed, startle factor, and why “no fast hands” can literally save your life. From tail tanks and induced drag to cargo-pilot zombie sleep schedules, you'll hear how big jets, night freight, and human factors all collide at high speed. Along the way we roast armchair investigators, explain jet engines and compressor stalls with a clever Taco Bell analogy from BadAss! We share some stories that will make every pilot nod and every non-aviator gasp. If you've ever wondered what really happens on the flight deck when everything goes sideways at rotation, this episode is your front-row seat. Screenshot

This week on the podcast, I'm doing a solo episode. Going into my junior year, my confidence was sky-high after the summer training block of my life. As I have documented on the show, I got hit with major adversity and sickness multiple times throughout September and October. While I didn't realize it at the time, I had it in my head that my performance would be the deciding factor in how the team performs in the postseason. And while this could have been true, that mindset created a toxic, self-centric mental outlook. I tried to take so much control, refusing to surrender to my body and the season, that I fell. Multiple times. It was only after we won Metro for the program's 4th-straight time that I truly internalized and shifted my mindset from myself to the team. Not only did this take pressure off slightly, but I oddly enjoyed the process of training and racing so much more. No longer was I working out and racing to hit splits and run a major time. I was executing the training and racing to drag my teammates along and chase greatness collectively. Varsity racing teaches you so much. I tell of that lesson and many others on the show today.
This week we sit down with Greg Cantwell, and with 60+ years on the planet and decades of training experience… we had a lot to cover.Varsity basketball, heavy lifting, cycling, marathons, a full Ironman, three years of competitive taekwondo, and now CrossFit — Greg has truly done it all. This one was such a fun conversation we easily could've gone 3–4 hours. Don't miss it!
Thanks Nachum! The 2025-2026 Winter season is only a few weeks old, but already all leagues have seen dynamite matchups and jaw-dropping comebacks. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, varsity hockey sees two shocking third period comebacks, JV Hockey's defending champs open up with a statement W, Varsity Basketball's top teams trade wins and losses on the week and familiar faces atop both divisions in the first few weeks of JV Basketball. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. We start off in Varsity hockey, where three upsets were thwarted by furious third-period action. Tuesday night saw TABC and Ohr Yisroel meet up in Teaneck. A close game throughout, Ohr Yisroel found themselves up 3-1 as action ran into the third, before the defending conference champions found their groove, scoring 4 goals to grab the 5-3 victory and stay undefeated atop the West. The Flatbush Falcons saw that and decided to up the ante the very next night. The Falcons found themselves down 4-0 to their rivals, the Magen David Warriors heading into the third period, before Flatbush poured in 6 goals in the first 5 minutes of the final stanza, squeezing past the Warriors 6-5 for their first win of the season. Finally, a comeback that was not to be. Defending runner-up HANC took a 5-1 lead into the final minute of the 2nd period on YDE, but the Thunder would blitz the Hurricanes, netting 3 goals in 32 seconds to end the middle period down only 5-4. HANC would regain their balance in the third for a 7-5 victory, and now sit at 2-0 atop the East. Moving over to JV Hockey, TABC has surged their way to the top of the league at 3-0. YDE gave last year's runner-ups a battle in Teaneck on Thursday night, but, ultimately, the Storm prevailed 5-2 and followed that win up with a trip to Brooklyn and a decisive win over Flatbush last night. In other action, DRS kicked off their title defense with a blanking of that same Flatbush team and now sit tight for their next week as they prepare for HAFTR next Monday night and SAR next Thursday, both on the road. Varsity Basketball saw plenty of action this week, and very little clarity as to who should be at the top. Frisch and DRS started out the week barely squeezing by MTA and YDE, respectively, both 4 point victories. Frisch would follow that up with a 62-48 loss to TABC in the first battle of the Route-4 Rivalry, behind Akiva Borgen's 19 point night for the Storm. TABC would follow that with a 45-36 loss to DRS, while Frisch would rebound with a 73-66 victory over Flatbush. The flux left the door open for Magen David and Ramaz both of whom would take advantage, Ramaz with a 19 point win over MTA and Magen David with a 50-43 win over TABC, both now leading their respective divisions at 3-0 Meanwhile in JV basketball, DRS dropped Westchester and YDE with two 70-point showings, while Flatbush has also jumped out to 2-0, but needed to survive a 51-49 contest with North Shore in order to maintain perfection. DRS will meet up with North Shore tonight while Flatbush will host HANC. Out West, SAR has opened their season at 2-0 taking wins over MTA and Kushner. And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.

Are you assuming “I'm a varsity athlete, so the Athlete piece is handled”? That assumption can cost you an appointment. For the Service Academies, being “athletic” isn't just team participation—it's quantifiable performance, leadership, and a smart plan to crush the CFA. In this Academy-focused episode of our Scholar • Athlete • Leader series, retired Army officer LTC Rob Kirkland and former Air Force officer Trish Dach break down how academies actually evaluate your athletic profile, what percent of your Whole Candidate Score it can influence, and how to tell your story so the board moves your score up—even if you're not a team captain. We also cover real-world CFA strategy, timelines, and injury-proof planning. You'll learn: Why athletics materially impact your Whole Candidate Score and how some academies weigh it (≈10–20%). The reality on recruited athletes (~18–23% of each class) vs. what every appointee must show. What counts as “elite” if your sport isn't a school varsity (e.g., national rankings, Ironman, CrossFit). Exactly what's on the CFA and where most candidates stumble. Practical minimums/safe lines for each CFA event—and why hitting only minimums can still fail you overall. How to write the “so what” so your resume earns extra manual points. Timing your tests to avoid injuries and deadline crunches. Timestamps 0:00 – Intro & why “Athlete” matters at academies 3:20 – Leadership & lessons sports uniquely teach future officers 5:10 – Athlete share of the Whole Candidate Score (and why it's non-negotiable) 6:20 – Varsity letters, captains, awards: the “gold standard”—and beyond 7:40 – Elite accomplishments outside school sports (what “wow” looks like) 10:58 – Integrity & estimating senior-year roles (what to list now) 12:50 – The “So What” box: how to quantify impact and stratify yourself 15:27 – No captains? Here's how to prove leadership anyway 18:16 – Team vs. individual sports: how boards perceive them 19:53 – Starting late? Smart sport selection & runway planning 22:00 – CFA events overview & common failure points 23:55 – Passing standards, “safe lines,” and why minimums aren't enough 26:01 – Retesting, seminars, and training timelines that work 31:40 – Injury-proof your app: test timing & deadline realities 33:00 – Final checklist to maximize your Athlete score ► CFA score planning & practice (take a practice test this week!) ► Book a 1:1 Academy strategy session to build your application plan and increase your chances of earning the appointment
Is "belonging" enough for today's athlete? According to the coaches at The Coaching Culture Podcast, the answer is a resounding No.In this complex and highly relevant episode, hosts J.P. Nerbun, Nate Sanderson, and Betsy Butterick dive into the crucial difference between a player feeling like they simply belong (fitting in culturally) and feeling like they matter (being essential to the team's success). We unpack the toughest challenge coaches face: managing multi-tiered rosters (Freshman, JV, Varsity) and moving players between levels. This is where culture, development, and winning all collide. You will learn:Why the desire to feel you matter is now greater than the desire to feel you belong. How to shift your language from "sending players down" to creating a culture of intentional development. A brilliant team activity (Playing Time Case Studies) to expose your athletes to the complexity of your coaching decisions. How to empower your team leaders (captains) to "coach the transition" for new and promoted players. Where the coach's responsibility ends and the athlete's responsibility for their own drive and development begins. Stop focusing only on who plays and start focusing on how everyone contributes. Darryl: 7/10 Brian: 7.91/10 This season picks up in the wake of The Boys Season 4, so the wider universe is in upheaval. The supes (superpowered individuals) are rising in influence, and societal tensions between “humans” and “supes” are mounting. Meanwhile, at the campus of Godolkin University (the super-powered college) the tone has shifted. The new Dean, Hamish Linklater's Cipher, has taken over and is steering the institution in a more militant, ideological direction. Also important: the show addresses the real-life death of actor Chance Perdomo (who played Andre) by choosing not to recast his character and weaving that absence into the story's grief and complexity. Core Storylines Marie Moreau (played by Jaz Sinclair) returns to Godolkin asking “what now?” after all they've been through — personal trauma, power shifts, ethical compromise. Her friends (Emma, Jordan, others) are also re-entering campus life, but nothing is the same. Their old status, relationships, and sense of purpose are all shaken. The University under Cipher is transforming from a somewhat dysfunctional but familiar institution into a training ground for supes as weapons (indoctrination, “fight clubs”, hierarchy). There's a growing war-like atmosphere: humans vs. supes, internal class conflict among supes, institutional corruption and hidden programs. One big plot strain revolves around a secret “Project Odessa”-type program from the 1960s that may tie into what supes are becoming and how they're being used. Themes & Character Arcs Power and control: The season explores how supes react when they lose status or are asked to conform, and how institutions try to harness/weaponize their abilities. Identity and trauma: The aftermath of loss (Andre's death, past events) weighs heavy on Marie and the group — they're not the naïve freshman brigade anymore. Ethics of supers: What does it mean to be a hero when your school trains you for war? When you're asked to fight humans or other supes? Institutional critique: The campus becomes a micro-cosm of the supes-humans power system, and the show critiques both supes and the institutions behind them. Build-up towards larger event: Season 2 is also positioning things for the larger universe (The Boys final season) — it doesn't exist in isolation. What Makes This Season Different / What to Watch For The villainy is more structural than just “bad supes”: Cipher isn't just brute force, he uses ideology and systems. The moral lines blur: characters you thought you knew shift or harden. Emma's shift from naive to hardened is called out in interviews. More crossover and weight in the shared universe: Guest appearances, world-building that ties into The Boys. A sense of “pre-apocalypse” for supes and humans – you feel like the semester at Godolkin is the calm before the larger storm. The production's real-life tragedy (Perdomo's death) gives the season extra emotional stakes and an undercurrent of loss. Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHThe movie kicks off and it feels a lot more zany then the other two. Cut to Eden Hall - the ducks are all getting full ride athletic scholarships to be the JV hockey team at Eden Hall. But it's not all fun and games...Bombay tells Charlie that he's not going to be their coach. Charlie is mad. But at least he still has the Ducks. Charlie and the rest of the Ducks show up the first day and make quite the entrance. They get to their happy place - the ice - and immediately begin to play lasso just like the good ol' days. Suddenly, former NHL player Ted Orion comes skating up. He's the new coach. And he is very strict and no one hates him more than Charlie. The Ducks struggle to fit in at this school and are constantly bullied by the Varsity team who Coach Orion warned them not to mess with until they play at the JV Variety showdown. Coach tells Charlie that he's not the captain, moves the players to different positions, starts Julie the Cat over Goldberg, and moves Banks to Varsity. Charlie takes a liking to this girl named Linda and invites her to their first game, which she comes to. It's time for the first game and they absolutely dominate through 2 periods thanks to all of their silly gimmicks. 3rd period begins and they just forget how to play. They give up a ton of goals after not playing playing any defense. They give up 9 goals in one period and the game ends in a tie. Coach is mad. Charlie threatens to quit. And the varsity team puts their clothes in the shower. This leads to a full on prank war. Frozen jackets. Massive dinner bills. Full mission impossible stuff. This leads to an unsanctioned JV vs Varsity game that gets broken up by Orion. He tells them to take off their Duck jerseys. Charlie & Fulton refuse and quit. After a day of tomfoolery, Fulton decides to return to Eden Hall and Charlie is very sad. To make matters worse, Hans passes away. Bombay shows up late to the funeral. Bombay wakes Charlie up out of a slumber and tells him he's got some stuff to show him. They show up at Eden Hall and Charlie tells him that Orion's career ended when the team moved to Dallas and he stayed to care for his paraplegic daughter. Bombay tells Charlie the background story on how he first came to coach the Ducks and says he told Orion that Charlie was the heart and soul of the team, and he hoped that both Orion and Charlie would learn something from each other. The next day, Charlie shows up and tells Orion that he is ready to play two wake hockey. He's happy to have Charlie back. But the Dean shows up before they leave and tells them they're all losing their scholarships.Luckily, Bombay is still a lawyer and comes into a board meeting and threatens to sue them unless they reinstate their scholarships which the board agrees to. The Varsity team comes over and tells them they're going down at the JV/Varsity game, agree that if the JV wins, they become the Ducks, and they get Banks back too for the game. It's time. The JV/Varsity game and Orion brings back the Duck jerseys.Throughout the game, the Varsity dominates on offense. However, the Ducks play good defense and manage to keep the game scoreless after two periods. During the second intermission, Portman shows up ready to join the team. He immediately gets ejected. It all comes down to Charlie passing it back to Goldberg at the last second who scores. The ducks win 1-0!They all celebrate and Charlie sees that Bombay was in the stands this whole time. The Eden Hall banner with the Ducks' logo drops down & Bombay then departs the rink with a smile amid a sea of cheering fans.
