Believe it or not, before Coach Norman ever drew up a ball-screen defense or recruited a future WNBA star, she was… a fisheries biologist.Yes, really. With a wildlife biology degree from Arizona State University, she started her career rehabilitating streams for salmon spawning with the U.S. Forest Service — proof that paths can pivot, passions can emerge late, and purpose can find you anywhere.A chance opportunity led her to chase a graduate assistant coaching role — typing letters to 20–30 programs until only one — the University of Hawaii — said yes.Three days later, she flew from Europe to Hawaii and walked into the beginning of a coaching career that would change countless lives.Sometimes all you need is one person, one yes, one moment. What followed?

(Wyoming) - When Macey Mortimore was critical of an official at her sister's middle school basketball game her dad asked, "if you know so much why don't you go do it?" She replied, "alright dad, watch me." Fast forward to 2025 and Mortimore is now in her 14th season refereeing Wyoming hoops. The Wyoming High School Activities Association recently handed out their post-season accolades for officials in all sports. Mortimore was at a summer camp for officials in Colorado when she got the news that she'd been selected as girls basketball official of the year. In addition to years of service to Wyoming high school sports herself, she's inspiring others to wear the stripes. Macey hosts basketball officials classes at Shoshoni High School. Many of her students have earned opportunities to call middle school and high school games. We had the chance to chat with the Fremont County official recently on the County 10 Sports Podcast. She told us about the rewarding, and challenging, parts of the job. Macey also discussed some of her favorite memories and the changes she's seen in Wyoming basketball over the years. In this episode of Hawk Talk, South River High School's girls basketball coach Mike Zivik shares the exhilarating story behind their state championship win, outlining a journey from a challenging 2-5 start to ultimate glory at the University of Maryland. The episode delves into the team's development over the season, highlighting the strategic coaching, mental resilience, and unwavering community support that fueled their success. Coach Zivik's tactical use of the team's depth to wear down opponents played a pivotal role, particularly in the championship game, where South River's frequent rotation of players contrasted sharply with their opponent's reliance on a few key starters, setting the stage for a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback. The championship's setting added an extraordinary dimension to the victory, as the team walked the same tunnels as Big Ten legends, buoyed by the vibrant support of five busloads of fans from their hometown and the local community cheering from The Turtle in Edgewater. Coach Zivik highlighted the psychological strength of the team, emphasizing their ability to stay positive and composed under pressure, which was crucial to their comeback and ultimate victory. This episode not only celebrates their tactical success but also paints a vivid picture of the emotional and community-driven aspects that contributed to their memorable championship run. This episode also marks an exciting transition for Hawk Talk as host Tom Frank welcomes new co-hosts Grey Frank and Jayden McDuffie, who bring fresh energy and perspective to the show. Their enthusiastic participation in a March Madness draft competition adds a fun, interactive element that basketball fans will appreciate as they debate tournament predictions and strategies.Whether you're a South River Seahawk supporter, a basketball enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates stories of perseverance and triumph, this championship celebration episode delivers authentic insights into what makes a winning team both on and off the court.
