Send us Fan MailThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale talks with FWP Education Program Assistant Ryan Schmaltz about the Archery in the Schools Program. First, you all are going to love Ryan! He has so much energy and enthusiasm for this program and man what a job he has done! He has been all over Montana getting schools involved in this amazing program and training teachers how to teach it. Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks has been championing this program for about 15 years but over the last few years it has really taken off! It is part of the National Archery in the Schools Program or NASP which has, since its inception in 2002, reached over 23.5 million students, primarily in grades 4-12. The program operates in all 50 states, boasting a 50-50% male/female participation rate. But get this, in Montana last year alone about 150 schools included the program in their PE classes with over 14,000 Montana youngsters participating! But this is more than kids shooting arrows at targets and blocks of foam shaped like animals. It is changing most all the kids that participate! That is why you have GOT to watch or listen to this podcast. You can do that on MontanaOutdoor.com, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and many other websites and directories! Here is an example of what we mean by changing the kids. Ryan pointed out that in the recent State Tournament that a whole bunch of schools traveled to Helena to participate in, he looked out over the sea of well over 200 4th through 12th graders and did not see one child looking at a cell phone during the entire tournament. Oh, they had their phones with them, sticking out of their pockets and such but THEY WERE FOCUSED! As Rigger put it, “THAT is unheard of and just flat amazing! MJ, Dan, and Dave discuss (well they talk around) the LA Galaxy match. It's mostly about Dave's trip to LA and Stub Hub/Herballife/Dignity Health Sports Park. Then we talk briefly about the season as a whole and reflect on the last few weeks but also what we thought of how the Loons played this year. Finally, we briefly touch on the Doubloons playoff run and congratulate a couple of Saint Paul City Conference schools making it to the State Tournament (and one winning their Quarterfinal as we were recording)!

Ras Vanderloo recently retired after his 14th season as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Sioux City East High School in Sioux City, IA. He spent 32 years coaching basketball, 14 as a Head Coach and 18 as an Assistant Coach. Ras is a 5-time district coach of the year and the 2017 State 4A Coach of the Year. He won 314 games as a head coach at East High with 4 State Tournament appearances and a State Runner Up in 2012.In addition to his run as the Head Coach at East, Ras also runs a large youth league basketball program with over 650 kids annually participating. The league is currently 33 years old and was started by his father.Ras comes from a large coaching family, his father Rich and brother Jeff (now a Creighton Assistant) are both former Head Coaches at East High in Sioux City. His brothers John and Jim are coaches as wellRas has worked with USA Basketball in varying capacities, most recently as an assistant coach for the Men's 3 x 3 Nation's League that competed this summer in Chile. On this episode Mike & Ras discuss his retirement from teaching and coaching along with the new opportunities in front of him, including his involvement with USA Basketball. Vanderloo reflects on the significance of learning from experienced mentors and emphasizes the value of dedication and hard work in achieving success in coaching. He shares insights about the differences between coaching in traditional formats versus the increasingly popular 3x3 basketball format, highlighting the unique challenges and strategies involved in this fast-paced version of the game.
