Join us for the first-ever Ski Moms Book Club and Author Chat with Megan in early October! Contact us via DM @theskimoms or email for an invitation. In this episode, we welcome Megan Tady, author of the Washington Post noteworthy book "Bluebird Day," which follows a compelling mother-daughter alpine skiing duo in the Swiss Alps. From her journalism roots to becoming a novelist, Megan shares how she crafted an authentic story about competitive skiing despite not being an expert skier herself. Through extensive research, including interviews with Olympic athletes and sports psychologists, she brings depth and authenticity to her characters' experiences on and off the slopes.Megan tells about her personal journey with skiing, from humble beginnings at Nebraski to a transformative (and terrifying) experience on a Swiss glacier that later informed her writing. She discusses how this personal encounter with skiing anxiety helped shape her character development and contributed to the book's exploration of mental health in sports. As a mother of two young children just beginning their skiing journey at Berkshire East, Megan offers insights into balancing family life with creative pursuits and the delicate art of encouraging children in sports while respecting their boundaries. She thoughtfully weaves in broader themes about climate change's impact on winter sports, nature's healing power, and the importance of disconnecting from technology to connect with the outdoors.Keep Up with Megan!Website: www.megantady.comInstagram: www.instagram.com/@megtadyBuy Bluebird Day on AmazonKeep Track of Everything with Mabel's Labels From lunchboxes to water bottles, backpacks to hoodies—Mabel's Labels are durable, waterproof, and mom-approved. Her program offers flexibility for active women who enjoy multiple sports. The conversation includes Hollie's adventures skiing the Swiss and Italian Alps, practical packing tips for international ski trips, and navigating European ski culture with family. And like always, we discuss après ski traditions, including non-alcoholic options and her family's unique pop-tart tradition. Winter sports are thrilling and enjoyable, but they come with unique risks that require careful preparation and safety measures. Activities such as skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and sledding expose participants to hazards like icy conditions, extreme cold, and potential collisions. Wearing appropriate protective gear, such as helmets, padded clothing, and eye protection, can significantly reduce the risk of injury. Additionally, dressing in moisture-wicking and layered clothing helps maintain body warmth and prevent frostbite or hypothermia. It is also crucial to stay hydrated, as cold weather can mask dehydration, leading to fatigue and impaired judgment. Beyond proper attire and gear, choosing the right location for winter activities plays a vital role in safety. Skiers and snowboarders should stay on marked trails and follow posted safety signs, while ice skaters should use designated rinks rather than unsafe, natural bodies of water. Supervision is essential, especially for children, as they may not recognize potential dangers. Activities like ice fishing and snow fort building also require special precautions, such as checking ice thickness and avoiding enclosed snow structures that could collapse. By following these guidelines, individuals can enjoy winter sports safely while minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries.
Today… we're going skiing! And we're doing it in style in France, Switzerland, Italy, and other European destinations. I wanted to pull together this episode not only because skiing in Europe is an amazing cultural experience, but also because it's looking pretty darn good from a value perspective right now. The Euro and Dollar are currently on par and lift tickets and lessons are massively cheaper in Europe than in the US. Our guests today are the brother and sister team, Rick Reichsfeld and Richelle Blanken. The duo grew up skiing competitively, both raced in college, and then Richelle even raced in the Olympics. When Richelle left the national team - brother and sister teamed up to find a way to make a living from helping others experience the joy of skiing and the duo are our partners in planning amazing ski trips around the world for Bell & Bly Travel clients. We discuss everything from Michelin starred mountain food, to unique lifts across Europe, to the most luxurious resorts, spas, and even non-skiing winter activities. Sit back with a cup of hot chocolate or a glass of champagne, and enjoy this episode of Luxury Travel Insider. Learn more at www.luxtravelinsider.com Connect with me on Social: Instagram LinkedIn
