Tom Gilbert Madison Capitols' Associate Head Coach and Assistant General Manager Tom Gilbert is celebrating two anniversaries during the 2025-2026 season - the 25th Anniversary of his senior year of high school, where he and his Bloomington Jefferson teammates had their quest for a Minnesota state championship chronicled by author John Rosengren - and the 20th anniversary of his national championship season at the University of Wisconsin. For nearly 25 minutes, Gilbert shares his feelings about both experiences, plus drops some knowledge for young players on how to grow early in their careers, what it means to share the bench with former Badger teammates Andy Brandt and Shane Connelly, and how his NHL career has helped shape him into the coach he is today. Hope you enjoy.

Since 1999, Mark Carlson has been the head coach of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, and has coached the most games in USHL history after surpassing North Iowa and Waterloo legend P.K. O'Handley in February of 2025. Now just two wins away from passing O'Handley again for the most USHL career coaching victories, Carlson sits down to discuss why an East Coast guy ended up in Iowa, how the USHL will maintain its uniquely American identity in the changing landscape of junior hockey, and his becoming a part of the fabric of the Cedar Rapids community with his wife Tammy, the RoughRiders' Director of Sales and Operations. Hope you enjoy.
A native of Dellwood, Minnesota, Ryland Rooney's career has taken him from the White Bear Lake youth program, to Gentry Academy, and now the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers. Omaha General Manager Marc Fritsche grew up balancing both hockey and football in the pigskin-mad corner of northeastern Ohio, and parlayed his early years into a coaching, scouting, and administrative career spanning from the Buckeye State to the blazing sunshine of Phoenix, Arizona. While his Lancers inhale pasta, salad, and breadsticks in the lobby of a Cranberry Township hotel, Fritsche chats about his childhood in his hometown of Parma, his playing career that included over 140 games in Switzerland, and how he and a new coaching staff are taking on the challenge of rebuilding the Lancers - and creating a sustainable quality culture in Omaha - after a chaotic 2024-2025 season. Episode 88: Tom Upton. Tom first grew up on Long Island and shared some memories of going to Islander's games as a kid. He would move to Austin, Texas at 10 years old which was a different hockey experience for him. He would go on to play parts of 4 seasons in the NAHL before deciding to attend D3 Wisconsin Stevens-Point University. He talked about his amazing 4 years there and how he is still close with a group of teammates to this day. One of them is last week's guest, Anthony Noreen, who both played with and coached Tom at UWSP. After graduating, Tom would also stay on as an Assistant Coach and begin his coaching journey. This journey has taken Tom through various leagues such as the USHL, NAHL and NCAA Division 1. Tom is now in his 4th season at the University of Massachusetts, working under a veteran coach in Greg Carvel. We talked about his crazy route to where he is and what he has learned along the way. I was also curious to Coach Carvel's impact on Tom. Tom brought up the word “hard” and that is a common theme at UMass. Everyone needs to be hard and Tom gave many examples of what it means. It is easy to see why UMass has been on a great path for the past 10+ seasons and why Tom is a good fit there. Like anyone, he still has dreams and one of those is the NHL. A potential awesome achievement for a kid from Texas. Hope you enjoy!
Episode 87: Anthony Noreen. After a little break, the prohockeypod returned this week with Miami of Ohio Head Coach Anthony Noreen. Anthony has been a journey man who coached 16 years in various leagues before getting this NCAA Division 1 job. He grew up in the Chicago area and was immediately integrated into hockey from his father. Anthony would go through Junior hockey before heading off to D3 Wisconsin Stevens-Point. He talked about how he went on a visit with a teammate and fell in love with the set up right away. He knew this is where he wanted to be. After 4 years of playing, Anthony would stay at this University as a Graduate Assistant Coach. He took on a lot of roles and was “thrown into the fire” right away, while not earning any salary. After Wisconsin, Anthony would get a job in the USHL with the Youngstown Phantoms. Over 5 seasons, he would help get the club on the right path and also win Coach of the Year in 14/15. A pro coaching opportunity would come available with the Orlando Solar Bears in the ECHL (who were affiliated with the Toronto Maple Leafs). Anthony talked about his 2 years there and how he learned a lot observing from affiliated coaches. He would then return to the USHL, this time with the Tri-City Storm, where he would spend 7 seasons as HC and GM. During this time, he would win Coach of the Year 2 more times, as well as win a Gold Medal with Team USA U19 in 2018/2019. Finally after so many years of grinding and building his resume, Anthony received the Head Coaching job at Miami of Ohio University. He talked about how it was a dream come true and how he had been there previously years before which solidified his desire to coach there one day. We talked about his journey, the campus, set up and how he likes to build his teams. He is very excited about the future/potential at Miami of Ohio and it was clear how true his passion is. Hope you enjoy!

Episode 306 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, features a great interview with Seattle Kraken prospect Victor Östman after a wild first season of pro hockey. In the feature interview presented by NHL Sense Arena, Östman discusses his roots and training in the position growing up in Sweden, his continuing evolution in the USHL and then through four years at the University of Maine, and a crazy first full season after turning pro at the end of past season. It included games in the ECHL, AHL and his NHL debut with the Kraken, as well as a goalie fight despite having an EBUG backing him up on the bench and a little known rule that kept him in the game. It's another can't miss interview with a goalie we suspect you'll hear a lot about in the coming years. In the Parent Segment, presented by Stop It Goaltending U the App, we asked listeners if you could pick ONLY 1 thing to work on this summer, would it be: A. Goalie-specific training with a coach (at a camp or 1-on-1), B. Playing Games or C. Skating (power or goalie specific). That sparked a great discussion on the benefits of each, with input from respondents to our question on social media. We also review this week's Pro Reads, presented by Vizual Edge, which features Charlie Lindgren breaking down video and discussing the importance of in-zone awareness even when your teammates have the puck, as well as the importance of not widening out as you drift backwards in order to avoid biting on fakes. And in our weekly gear segment, we go to The Hockey Shop Source for Sports to for a deep dive on the new CCM EFLEX 7 pads and gloves that launch in full at retail next week.
