Dennis and his game co-creator Jeb Havens head to a fabulous Hollywood high-rise to play You Don't Know My Life! with two of the men behind the new gay porn musical Shooting Star; Florian Klein, writer and producer and actor-singer Michael Scott Harris, who plays the aging daddy porn star in the show. The guys play a twist on the original YDKML format where each player writes down two answers to every question; one true answer and one that's a lie. It's a great way to play if you only have 3 or 4 people. The questions they take on involve regrettable fashion trends, getting picked on, early encounters with pornography and the always provocative "When was a time when you felt like you took a walk on the wild side?" www.youdontknowmylife.com
Dennis heads to his friend Don Cummings' place in Hollywood to play You Don't Know My Life! with four up-for-anything authors. Vanessa McGrady's book is called Rock Needs River: A Memoir About a Very Open Adoption. Career coach Barbara Deutsch wrote a book about communication called Open Up for Shut Up: How to Talk Your Way Into or Out of Anything. August McLaughlin's book is called Girl Boner: The Good Girl's Guide to Sexual Empowerment. She also has a podcast of the same name. And finally, our gracious host Don Cummings, who Dennis interviewed earlier this year, wrote the memoir Bent But Not Broken about his odyssey with Peyronie's Disease. The questions the play have to do with everything from breakups to teen idols to good deeds from strangers to riding in an elevator with Rush Limbaugh. There's also a story involving a tarp and a rainstorm that's so romantic it should be turned into a Hallmark movie. www.youdontknowmylife.com https://www.thebarbaradeutschapproach.com/ http://vanessamcgrady.com/rock-needs-river/ https://augustmclaughlin.com/ https://www.doncummings.net/
Just in time for the 4th of July weekend, here's a special YOU DON'T KNOW MY LIFE! episode featuring filmmaker/playwright/performer Del Shores (Sordid Lives, Southern Baptist Sissies) and three of his frequent collaborators: actress Ann Walker (LaVonda in Sordid Lives), actor-producer Emerson Collins (Southern Baptist Sissies, Rent Live) and actor-filmmaker Mat Hayes (Cognitive). Game co-creators Dennis Hensley and Jeb Havens also play. The questions they answer include: When was a time that you gave into peer pressure? What's a movie that you saw when you were way too young to see it? What's a character trait that you share with your mother? and What's a memorable theme party you threw or attended? What's the shallowest, quirkiest or most shocking reason you decided, 'No, I don't want to date this person?' About half the stories that come up could be turned into gay short films; there are college fetish parties, a b.j. that turns into prayer when a roommate walks in, hot guys with warts down there, moms telling off small town busy-bodies and much much more. Keep in mind that the antidote to your anxiety about income is action – even if that action is taking even one, clear baby step towards your goal. (Even if that first baby step is simply to "pick a goal to move towards.") Worry and anxiety holds your energy in a perpetual spin cycle, but action interrupts that cycle and shifts your energy out of it. In this episode you'll hear Kristine give Dennis several different ways that he – and you – can shift your energy and thought patterns. Plus we discuss the possibilities around bringing other interviewers into his Lifecast biz. ------------------------ More info about Kristine, plus additional resources and support (to help you start and grow a side hustle), are available at: CashflowForCreatives.com Host: Kristine Oller Participant: Dennis Hensley / biz: Lifecast / game: You Don't Know My Life / podcast: Dennis Anyone? Like many creatives, Dennis is a true idea person who loves to be creating and innovating. He's getting a bit better about switching into business mode but, as you'll hear in this episode, that's not where his brain naturally wants to go. To prevent him from fumbling some excellent money generating opportunities, Kristine continues to steer him back to thinking strategically when it comes to business activities like fundraising, licensing deals, interview prep, negotiating, and copyrighting. Most everyone says they want more money... but far too many side hustlers are afraid or uncomfortable to even talk about it or ask for it. But settling for a muddy exchange of money feels weird and will never serve you well. You want to know your number – whether it's the precise amount you are getting paid, the precise amount you owe someone, or the precise amount you need to raise. In this episode, you'll hear Dennis and Kristine dive into five different money situations in which he will benefit greatly by stepping up and committing to doing business. When you are facing any type of challenge in business or in life, it is your self-talk – the stories you choose to tell yourself – that will usually make or break you. In this episode, you'll hear Dennis share how he's adjusting to a life where he's his own boss – he's in charge of his schedule, his workflow, his marketing, AND, most importantly, his mindset. Kristine offers him – and you – some tactics that you can use to shift your perspective when you find your mind spinning with anxiety or focusing on the negative. Kristine also offer some tactics that you can use to when marketing your side hustle at events and when introducing yourself to prospective clients and new funnel people. How you talk about what your side hustle has to offer will have a direct effect on your bottom line. Of course, you should never lie, but you can put the most positive spin on the truth as possible. Rather than worry about how potential clients are going to judge him and his product, Kristine shows Dennis how to use language to teach clients how they should be evaluating what he has to offer. Also in this episode, Kristine suggests a plan of action that would enable Dennis to raise the money he needs in the time frame that he has to pay a company to produce the first physical sets of his board game before the end of this year. This episode marks the half-way point of Dennis' work with Kristine. He continues to bet on himself, utilizing both bold moves and important but small baby steps to move his side hustle(s) forward. In this episode, Kristine reminds Dennis – and you – the importance of having contracts and clear agreements in place, especially when doing business with friends. Dennis is discovering that there are some things that can only be discovered or learned or figured out "on the job" – when he is actually doing the work of his side hustle. Some of your best insights and ideas will be stumbled upon – and very often it will be through the mistakes you make that you find even better ways of doing things. Every side hustler experiences the ups and downs inherent to entrepreneurship and Dennis is no exception. In this episode, Kristine offers guidance to Dennis about how to keep his inner-self steady even when his external life feels shaky. As it happens for many side hustlers, it is taking Dennis some time to get used to being the boss. The juggling act of maintaining boundaries with clients while still satisfying them makes him feel a bit awkward sometimes, but it's important for him – and for you – to be reminded that that feeling doesn't necessarily mean you are doing something wrong or that what you are doing isn't working. In this episode, Kristine encourages Dennis to step up and "do business" – to make clearly defined transactions, to set a sustainable schedule, and to tell himself more empowering stories. This episode of Dennis Anyone is divided into two parts. In the first half, Dennis visits the Glendale apartment of professional change strategist and past podcast guest Kristine Oller to get the scoop on her new Cashflow for Creatives program, which Dennis is a part of. For the past 5 months, Dennis has gone to Kristine every two weeks to get coaching for his new businesses Lifecast and the game You Don't Know My Life. Kristine has turned these sessions into a podcast where she uses the real life examples of Dennis and three other creative entrepreneurs to show how her tips and philosophies work in the real world. Dennis got so much out the process and he hopes listeners will, too. Part 2 of the podcast is an excerpt from the FYSEE event showcasing Netflix's revival of Queer Eye. All five of the Fab Five--Antoni Porowski, Bobby Berk, Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown and Tan France--were on hand along with the show's Executive Producer David Collins and the make-better subject of the episode they screened A.J. from Atlanta. "I started crying about a minute into the episode and didn't stop until the event was over," says Dennis. "This is the show the world needs right now."
Like every side hustler, Dennis is building his biz while, at times, feeling trepidatious, uncertain, and uncomfortable. Those feelings are totally normal and will arise each time you venture outside of your comfort zone. The goal, however, is to not let those feelings stop you from taking action. An effective way to stoke your courage is to remain aware and appreciative of all the things that are going well and that are unfolding smoothly. In this episode, Kristine and Dennis discuss facing fears and prioritizing opportunities. They explore some of the possible avenues and funnel people that could supply a flow of clients to his little biz, and examine the importance of not complicating the path between "you and your cash." ------------------------ More info about Kristine, plus additional resources and support (to help you start and grow a side hustle), are available at: CashflowForCreatives.com Host: Kristine Oller Participant: Dennis Hensley / biz: Lifecast / game: You Don't Know My Life / podcast: Dennis Anyone? Dennis is an idea machine who needs to be reminded that, to see results, he must actually select a few good ideas and execute them fully (maintaining a steady balance between idea generation and idea implementation). A few good marketing ideas applied consistently is all that is needed for him – and for you – to start attracting some clients and generating some cash. In this episode, Kristine helps Dennis refine some ideas for marketing and social media. They also discuss how he can set himself up to eventually transition from a one-man-operation to someone leading a team.
