At women's conference this weekend we listened to a presentation about phone use, technology, Real VS Reel. During a part of it we talked about getting outside and enjoying nature. That led me thinking about the Savior and other scripture stories of people doing life in the outdoors. I personally love the outdoors. I walk most days a week. I love to see the birds, flowers, trees, grass, and the sky. Either hiking, camping, mowing, yardwork. Alma: "All things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth... witness that there is a Supreme Creator" (Alma 30:44)Benefits of being outdoors:Spending time in nature reduces stress (lowering cortisol), improves mental health by easing depression and anxiety, boosts immune function, increases vitamin D levels, and enhances focus. In this episode, we take a journey outward through space to discover 10 amazing things you can see with a small telescope or even 50mm binoculars. Starting at the rugged surface of the Moon and traveling farther from Earth with each stop, we'll visit giant planets, colorful double stars, glowing nebulae, dense star clusters, and finally another galaxy more than 2 million light-years away.  Along the way, we'll learn what these objects actually look like through the eyepiece. This episode is designed especially for beginners, but even experienced observers will find these targets rewarding. Every object on this list can be seen with 50mm binoculars, and many become even more impressive through a small backyard telescope. In this episode, we speak with Dr Iain Cromarty about life as a GP on the island of Hoy in Orkney. Iain shares how he came to work in one of Scotland's most remote practices, the realities of providing care to a population of around 400 on an island steeped in wartime history, and the unique clinical challenges of island medicine - from catching ferries for acute admissions to managing patients when no transport is available. He also reflects on how continuity of care is changing now that the islands rely entirely on itinerant doctors working shorter shifts. We discuss digital health and connectivity, a subject close to Iain's heart. He describes the frustrations of working without facilities like Order Comms, relying on Word documents and scanned emails for processes that were fully digital in his Norfolk practice 15 years ago, and the ongoing challenges of unreliable broadband and telephony that can sometimes cut doctors and patients off entirely. But it's not all frustration - Iain highlights how Near Me video consultations have transformed outpatient access to Aberdeen specialists, and how a WhatsApp group connecting clinicians across 10 islands has become a lifeline for clinical support, including one memorable case of a video-guided consultation with a patient still trapped in a car. “The future of education has got to be innovative.”Tannette Elie“I come from a family of educators and I never ever thought that I would be a teacher, never.” Tannette Elie's path to the classroom began as a longtime journalist and business columnist before transitioning into higher education. Now an adjunct associate lecturer at a Wisconsin institution, she turned a part-time teaching opportunity into a full-time calling, earning her master's degree and bringing decades of real-world media experience into her courses. Her unconventional route and determination to navigate academia as a Black woman without a PhD shaped the confident, career-focused educator she is today.“I don't treat them like they're just these students or kids; they're professionals to me.” With 20 years of print media experience followed by 16 years in the classroom, Tannette approaches her communications courses like an editor, requiring rewrites, interviews, elevator pitches and emphasizing industry standards that prepare students for real careers in the field of communication. She is especially passionate about mentoring Black students, helping them build confidence, sharpen their skills, and access opportunities they may not have imagined for themselves. She also speaks about the declining presence of Black male students in her classes and the broader implications for Black education. You can't really love someone with all your heart – that's not what the heart does. Still, we talk about love and the heart as being connected. Why? That's just one of the things I discuss with my guest Dr. Vincent Figueredo. He is a practicing cardiologist, professor of medicine and author of the book, The Curious History of the Heart: A Cultural and Scientific Journey (https://amzn.to/4hlJQfa).
