Half a century after the drug-fueled, DJ-driven, glamour-drenched musical phenomenon of disco was born at a New York City loft party, disco's musical and fashion influences live on in popular culture. WGN Radio's Dave Plier talks to author Frank DeCaro about his new book Disco: Music, Movies, and Mania under the Mirror Ball — an entertaining, yet serious tribute […]
We are celebrating The Golden Girls and Disco! The masterful creative output of the 70s and 80s continues to inform and inspire! Diving deep to illuminate this point are coffee table book couple, Jim Colucci and Frank DeCaro. Jim's book, Golden Girls Forever: An Unauthorized Look Behind The Lanai is packed with hundreds of exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes and never-before-revealed stories, more than two hundred rare photos, Golden Girls sets, fashion, memorable quotes and more.Jim tells us about The Rule of Four, led by Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia that's become a sitcom template. He shares the secret formula to Golden Girls' success. Great writing x phenomenal performances. We address what fueled the Betty/Bea personality clash, and we learn how Maude, Soap and a skit promoting NBC's new 1984 programming sparked the conception of a show about women of a certain age that changed friendships, social norms, and how we view cheesecake, forever.Frank's book, Disco: Music, Movies, and Mania under the Mirror Ball, is a comprehensive guide to the queer, club music that became a dance sensation, a fashion craze and a mainstream lifestyle. Gay men and black women created the driving rhythms of Disco music and dancing, but white men, like the Bee Gees and Travolta, carried it on a shimmering wave through middle America. Studio 54's denizens were draped in skimpy haute couture while the masses were obsessed with themed merchandise, examples of which have become iconic pieces of modern kitsch. We also hear about Frank and Jim's meet-cute, Jim's first journalism assignment at a mobbed (never pardon our puns) Soprano's casting call, and the conversation doesn't end until it reaches its logical conclusion: the Nancy Walker factor. In recommendations --Weezy: The movie Dreamin' Wild on HuluFritz: The documentary, Ladies And Gentlemen... 50 Years of SNL Music on PeacockPath Points of Interest:Jim ColucciGolden Girls Forever: An Unauthorized Look Behind The LanaiJim Colucci Amazon Author PageJim Colucci on InstagramFrank DeCaroFrank Decaro on WikiFrank Decaro Show Facebook GroupFrank Decaro on InstagramDisco: Music, Movies, and Mania under the Mirror BallFrank Decaro Amazon Author PageDreamin' Wild - HuluLadies And Gentlemen... 50 Years of SNL Music - Peacock

So if I were to tell you that this week's guest had just published a new book titled 'Disco: Music, Movies, and Mania Under the Mirror Ball'* you'd be expecting some spectacular stories of glamour and debauchery, right? Well, I'm pleased to say that author Frank DeCaro did not disappoint! We caught up to chat about the lost legendary Chicago space Dugan's Bistro, a gay discotheque that was a cornerstone of his coming-of-age years, and Frank was so generous in sharing stories of friendships, wild nights, and finding himself in the midst of it all. What I really loved about this conversation is that Frank is just unapologetically himself, and from the sounds of it, his coming out was refreshingly joyous, exciting and celebratory, and it's really nice to be reminded that it can be that way. My guest this week is pop culture writer Frank DeCaro, whose latest book is Disco: Music, Movies, and Mania under the Mirror Ball. Frank grew up in disco's heyday, which he experienced through teenage disco parties in the New Jersey suburbs. He also experienced the anti-disco conspiracy that sent the genre into a sort of musical witness protection program for the following decade or two. We talked about the conspiracy among music critics to suppress disco in the ‘70s — and why disco's outlived those who tried to squash it.Also, just a quick reminder — this month we'll be hitting the 500th episode of The Sewers of Paris! And to celebrate, I'm doing a special Q&A episode, answering questions from listeners. So if you have anything you'd like to ask — about the podcast, about pop culture and queer history, or just for recommendations — please send it along to at matt@mattbaume.com.

Dennis is joined via Zoom by author Frank DeCaro to discuss his gorgeous and glittery new coffee table book Disco: Music, Movies and Mania Under the Mirror Ball. Frank talks about why he wanted to write about disco, what makes a song a disco song, the MAGA-esque Disco Demolition riot that helped kill disco fever in the U.S. and the long list of unlikely performers who jumped on the disco bandwagon like Bill Cosby, Frank Sinatra, Ethel Merman and the cast of the TV cop show Barnaby Jones. Frank and Dennis also discuss their affection for disco fashion, from polyester shirts to Angels Flight slacks to Jordache jeans to sky-high platforms. Frank also shares the unlikely but meant-to-be story of how he managed to score a Donna Summer interview for the end of his book when Summer herself has been dead since 2012. Other topics include: the head-scratching ubiquity of the Village People, the timeless magic of Saturday Night Fever, disco tchotckes, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, and the allure of Studio 54, which, as Frank's book describes as "a dictatorship at the door and a democracy on the dance floor."

Working with these creative forces, he infused the magazine's pages with elegant and timeless features, including recreations of French Impressionist paintings at the celebrated Hotel Plaza Athénée Paris; homages to Christian Dior and Babe Paley; and a cover shoot with actress Julianna Margulies by Demarchelier at the Hotel du Cap in the Côte d'Azur. The strategy successfully transitioned Watch from a publication to a brand encompassing print, television, online, video and social media. The pivot to luxury editorial also helped attract labels such as Tom Ford, YSL, Giorgio Armani, Dior, Givenchy, Salvatore Ferragamo, Valentino, Hugo Boss, Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and Peninsula hotels as advertisers. Before CBS, Murphy worked as a reporter at Mediaweek, where he covered the nation's top 50 markets. He began as a feature writer with Knight Ridder newspapers. In 2010, Murphy was inducted into the Florida Atlantic University Alumni Hall of Fame. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bella-mag/support

I'm so excited to bring you this week's guest — the wonderful Frank DeCaro, writer, performer, pop culture encyclopedia. Frank was a role model for me back in the 90s when I would watch him on The Daily Show, and it was an absolute joy to geek out about pop culture with him and hear his disbelief that a weird little kid from Jersey got to grow up to have as many bonkers adventures as he has. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First a quick thanks to everyone who supports The Sewers of Paris on Patreon — including recent new members, Sinn Sage, Duffee, Bryan, and Fairy Onion Rings. And if you're like hearing about queer entertainment, check out my YouTube videos for dozens of deep dives into queer moments on TV and film that changed the world. I just posted a new video about hilarious old holiday commercials that prey on heterosexual insecurities, and how commercials for queer folks are surprisingly different. Also, if you'd like to hang out, join me for regular livestreams over at Twitch.tv/mattbaume every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoon for games and fun friendly chit chat
