What do you do when you're a talented corporate type who is diagnosed with a crippling disease which might put you in a wheel-chair?If you're artist Janna Garza, you file for divorce after 18 years: "He wasn't the guy I wanted pushing me around". But Kristi's long-time friend, who calls herself a "collector", and had moved from Texas into a plush corporate apartment in Chelsea, was about to discover her artistic side for real.It came about, as she says, through traveling, collecting vintage jewelry, fabrics, and oak treasures, watching people, and blogging about them. Now she has books - sometimes the design comes first, and sometimes the words. The latest is "Looks Familiar" - a spectacular collection of her haphazard, yet spectacularly accurate, portraits of often-familiar characters. Today we meet the effervescent Kim Harmon Gatlin, a Dallas native and author of the bestseller "Good Christian Bitches," which led to the ABC TV series. Kim opens up about the book's inspirations, rooted in her own experiences of high-society Dallas, and how her divorce from Rudy Gatlin of the Gatlin Brothers fueled her creative process. We swap outrageous stories about Dallas society, from the social expectations to the underground dating and hook-up scene. Kim tells us about her latest project: investigating a notorious murder and trial in Dallas, which Kristi says pre-empted the city's "decadent eighties". I have been fortunate to interview Del Shores (Sordid Lives Creator) multiple times throughout the years. After working in the entertainment industry for more than three decades as a Director, Producer, and Writer, Del is finally making his NYC theatrical directorial debut with Jiggs Burgess' play Wounded.I am so excited to catch up with Del because I always have great conversations with him. In this NEW interview, Del is Baring It All with Call Me Adam about:Making his NYC theatrical directorial debutOne thing he hasn't done because something or someone got in the wayOne path his life took that he would like to put on full displayWorking with Whoopi Goldberg & Caroline RheaAn update on the Sordid Lives FranchiseSo much moreWounded, by Jiggs Burgess, is about a repressed nobody who thinks of himself as somebody. An addict. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? played out between hummingbirds. And a pussy eating dog. This is Wounded. Carrol could've been somebody, after all his book, The Crimson Valise, was made into a movie. Yet somehow Carrol's unhealed past, and an aging mother, got in the way. On the other hand, Carrol's classmate, Robert, was smart and driven. Went to one of the best private universities in the country on scholarship. But his damage led him down the path of addiction and eventually prison. In this darkest of comedies, the bleak paths our lives can lead us down are on full display. ***Warning: Recommended for adult audiences. Contains language of a sexual and violent nature.***Wounded plays at the Soho Playhouse as part of the International Fringe Encore Series from January 24-February 11, 2024.More on Del Shores:Del Shores is the writer/director/producer of the films Sordid Lives, Blues for Willadean, Southern Baptist Sissies and A Very Sordid Wedding. In the wake of the sudden passing of actor Leslie Jordan, Dennis revisits this interview he conducted with Leslie in his Los Angeles apartment on October 28, 2014. In it, Leslie discusses his one-man show "Fruit Fly" which was returned to the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center's Renberg Theater that December. Leslie talks about show's origins, the theme of a gay man and his mother and the pain of revisiting his father's tragic passing in a plane crash. Leslie also tells wonderful and outrageous stories about his Emmy night turned nightmare, how his Emmy for "Will and Grace" got damaged, the "Dancing with the Stars" outing he'd like to forget and being mobbed by rabid "Sordid Lives" fans in Palm Springs. Leslie also answers these questions from the Observation Deck: Who was your most surprising fan? Where's the strangest place you've ever been recognized? And Have you ever thrown a good diva tantrum? Other topics include: working with Jessica Lange, writing a love letter to Lily Tomlin, gigantic pubic hair, spitting on Gary Busey on the British version of Big Brother, having his first boyfriend after the age of 50 and what kept him going through all the ups and downs of a career as an artist. About the interview, Dennis says, “I remember leaving Leslie's apartment after the interview feeling like I was high on some kind of drug, the drug of Leslie Jordan. He just made people happy on screen and off and what I find most inspiring about him is that he chose to be that way. I guess the lesson there is we all can.”
Comedic actor Leslie Jordan is gone too soon, leaving behind a legacy of humor and humanity from Will & Grace to Call Me Kat. Relive some favorite laughs, and hear his tales of the Sordid Lives he lived on screen — and some “sordid lives” in gay Hollywood then and now (interviewed by Chris Wilson, Abby Dees and Rosie Wilby). And in NewsWrap: the passage of marriage equality legislation in Guerrero and Tamaulipas completes the long process of making it law in all 31 Mexican states, an LGBTQ ally becomes Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Slovakia's Parliament rejects a bill to create registered partnerships for lesbian and gay couples, U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's new Tory Cabinet is just as anti-queer as his short-lived predecessor's, lawmakers in Russia's State Duma vote to expand the ban on “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations” among minors to include adults, persecuted Chechen brothers and WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner each lose appeals of harsh Russian prison sentences, upcoming U.S. midterm elections feature queer candidates in all 50 states, and more international LGBTQ news reported this week by Marcos Najera and Michael Taylor-Gray (produced by Brian DeShazor). In this week's episode, Mark and T.J. discuss the film Sordid Lives, described by its director as a black comedy about white trash. Among other things, your favorite queer film fans talk about the ways in which the film articulates the mingled contempt and affection that queer people feel for their Southern upbringing. Mark and T.J. also quiz each other about whether they are, in fact, gay, and they discuss the promise of the Biden era. Breaking news- California passes a complete ban on "Conversion Therapy" today, and we talk to top jounalists about it! Plus, we are excited to talk to author Rick Karatas about his new book Rainbow Relatives. Rainbow Relatives is an entertaining guide for parents, uncles, aunts, teachers and other trusted adults to find the language and methods to discuss with children (ages 3 to 16). It's a lighthearted and inspiring book, not a scientific one. Rick collected real, humorous, and heartwarming stories to help answer questions children may have on various topics about LGBT people and families. The book will help answer questions like: “How come Uncle Bill doesn't have a girlfriend?” Do Aunt Lucy and Doreen sleep in the same bed? “How can both those guys be Cindy's dads?” Film maker, Del Shores, (Sordid Lives) speaks of raising two daughters as a gay dad. Bruce Vilanch (Hollywood Squares) talks about being “Godfather” to 40 kids”. Country singer Chely Wright speaks about some of the battles still being fought. Another woman recalls how she explained to her children their father is gay. Featuring journalists Brody Levesque and Karen Ocamb, we also pay tribute to the late First Lady, Barbara Bush and her Abigail Adams legacy.
