Send us Fan MailWhat does it mean to truly improve outcomes for very low birth weight infants, and are we actually doing it? In this episode, Daphna sits down with Dr. Joseph Kaempf, neonatologist and Medical Director of Value Research and Innovation at Providence Health System in Oregon, to examine some uncomfortable truths about neonatal quality improvement. Dr. Kaempf shares findings from a study spanning 16 NICUs over 14 years showing that composite morbidity outcomes have remained flat while length of stay has increased. He explores why traditional QI tools like driver diagrams and PDSA cycles may no longer be sufficient, and why augmented intelligence may be the next frontier. The conversation also touches on culture as a driver of NICU performance and the gap between institutional interests and true shared decision-making with families. "Listening to your body is one of the key things you need to do to make everything else work." Over the past ten years of teaching people about fibromyalgia, Tami has seen certain issues repeatedly come up that get in the way of the healing journey. Last week, during our Certified Fibromyalgia Coach® training class, a student raised an important question about how we identify these issues when we have a client who isn't improving as we would like them to. The more you learn about fibromyalgia, the more aware you are of tools that could help you and why your symptoms may not be improving. At the same time, some less obvious issues often go unnoticed but must be addressed to make progress. Things like working with a doctor who doesn't quite know what to do with us, being in a season of life that doesn't allow us to prioritize ourselves, or unconscious trauma responses that block us from making the changes we need to. In today's episode, Tami is sharing the top three hidden reasons why your fibromyalgia symptoms might not be improving. She discusses why not listening to your body can block healing (whether or not it's unintentional), the key difference between consciously ignoring your body and being unaware of what it needs, the benefits of writing your body's owner's manual, how trauma can make it harder to manage your symptoms, acknowledging that rest and awareness are essential for healing, how undiagnosed or undertreated health conditions can get in the way of your healing journey, underlying conditions that Tami had to address as a part of her fibro journey, advocating for yourself and finding medical professionals who listen, how fibromyalgia amplifies other sources of pain, the importance of being realistic and managing expectations, why some people may not be ready, willing, or able to do the work required for improvement, when it's okay not to do the work, support for those facing financial or geographic limitations, and more. Note: This episode is not meant to be medical advice. Every person and every situation is unique. The information you learn in this episode should be shared and discussed with your own healthcare providers. To learn more about the resources mentioned in this episode, visit the show notes. If you've been living with OCD, anxiety, or chronic fear, you may have been telling yourself that now just isn't the right time to fully commit to recovery. In this episode, Matt Codde, LCSW shares a perspective that goes beyond symptom management — one that asks a deeper, more honest question: what are you actually prioritizing over your own healing, and why?Matt explores how fear isn't just a clinical symptom to be eliminated, but a signal calling you toward the most important inner work of your life. Whether you've been stuck in survival mode, oscillating between stable and overwhelmed, or quietly wondering if real recovery is even possible for you — this episode is for you. This conversation moves into spiritually oriented territory, exploring what it means to grow beyond the ego, confront what's blocking love and peace within you, and understand why facing fear is not just about feeling better — it's about becoming who you're meant to be.

What if the relentlessly negative news cycle is giving us a distorted picture of reality? In this episode of Blue Sky, Charles Kenny from the Center for Global Development makes a compelling, data-driven case that the world is truly getting better — in ways most of us rarely hear about. From dramatic reductions in global poverty and child mortality to rising living standards across the developing world, Charles unpacks the economic evidence that challenges our collective pessimism. He explores how technological advancements and shifting global perspectives are quietly reshaping human welfare for the better — and why that story isn't getting told. One habit. Practiced daily. Compounded over years. That is the actual price of becoming an excellent leader, and most ambitious people are paying a completely different price instead. Ryan Hawk has spent 11 years hosting The Learning Leader Show, with over 700 conversations with some of the highest-performing people in business, sports, and beyond. His new book, The Price of Becoming, is built on a simple but uncomfortable idea: the thing that separates sustaining excellence from fleeting success is not talent, vision, or even hard work. It's reliability. Consistency. The willingness to go to bed a little wiser than when you woke up, day after day, without interrupting the compounding. I got to sit down with Ryan on the Systematic Leader podcast, and I walked away with a pile of notes and one image I can't stop thinking about. Ryan flew to Boulder, Colorado, to record an interview with Jim Collins, author of Good to Great and one of the most respected names in business. Before they started recording, Collins walked in and began quietly emptying his pockets. Apple Watch. Key fob. Phone. A Ziploc bag with cash and an emergency contact. He placed it all in a neat pile outside the door. Then he walked in. He never mentioned it. Never made a speech about presence. He just removed every possible distraction before the conversation began. Ryan said he asked Collins' assistant about it afterward. Her answer: "Jim is so good about being locked in on what he chooses to do." That story tells you everything about what this episode is about. What Ambitious Leaders Consistently Get Wrong Ryan has asked hundreds of high performers what separates the great ones from everyone else. The answer is almost never what people expect. Not charisma. Not risk tolerance. Not some secret morning routine that takes four hours. The Inner Scoreboard vs. The Outer Scoreboard One of the most useful distinctions in this conversation is the difference between winning externally and winning internally. Ryan has worked with Brooke Cupps, the winningest high school basketball coach at Centerville High School, who has never set a single goal around winning games. Every goal his teams set is a process goal, tied to their core values: tough, passionate, unified, and thankful. The score, Ryan says, seems to take care of itself when your focus is that clear. The leaders who get out of whack are the ones fixated on what others will think, how something will look, or hitting a specific number. That outward focus crowds out the internal work that actually produces results. See It, Say It: The Simplest Culture-Building Practice Ryan shared the framework he uses with his coaching clients, borrowed from his collaborator Garen Stokes. The idea is this: when you observe something worth saying, you say it immediately. Vivid Clarity Is the Leader's Job One theme Ryan returns to again and again is that if someone on your team doesn't know what excellence looks like in their role, that is the leader's fault. Not the employee's. Yours. About Ryan Hawk Ryan Hawk is the host of The Learning Leader Show, one of the longest-running leadership podcasts with over 700 episodes and millions of listeners worldwide. If you've been doing everything right and still feel exhausted, anxious, and like your body just won't cooperate — this episode is for you. I sat down with Dr. Scott Sherr, a board-certified internal medicine physician and COO of Troscriptions, to talk about the sympathetic spiral: a chronic fight-or-flight loop most people don't even know they're in. And here's what surprised me most — you don't have to feel stressed to be stuck in it. We get into why your cellular energy and your anxiety are locked in a loop, what mitochondrial dysfunction actually means for your daily life, and how a specific sequence of support can help you finally start feeling better. We also go deep on methylene blue — the history, how it works, the right dosing range, and the sourcing and safety details that most people skip (including who should absolutely not use it). Plus: why GABA deficiency is so common, how to calm your nervous system without sedating yourself, and why sleep is a full-day practice — not just a bedtime routine. This week, we discuss downward revisions to GDP, persistent inflation and a renewed decline in the savings rate. Real GDP growth in the first quarter of 2026 was revised down from 2.1% to 1.6%, well below the consensus estimate of 2.2%. Meanwhile, inflation remained uncomfortably high. The PCE price index rose 3.8% from a year earlier, while core PCE increased 3.3%, both still far above the Federal Reserve's 2% target. The same report offered little comfort on the consumer. Real disposable personal income fell 0.5%, consumption rose just 0.1%, and the savings rate dropped to its lowest level since the eve of the Global Financial Crisis.

Best selling author Anna Malaika Tubbs stops by to tell us all about her book, Erased: What American Patriarchy Has Hidden from Us and helps us hone in on real time examples of our Patriarchy is being weaponized today. Anna unpacks how the United States has constructed a unique - and often invisible - gendered hierarchy, one that is inextricably linked to whiteness and a deeply flawed binary system. From the founding fathers to the current Supreme Court, from the erasure of women in the Constitution to the ongoing fight for the Equal Rights Amendment, Dr. Tubbs reveals the mechanisms that have kept women's contributions hidden and their voices suppressed. Anna Malaika Tubbs is a scholar, advocate, and bestselling author (The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation) whose work brings a fresh, urgent perspective on American history and its gendered systems. With a Ph.D. in Sociology and a Masters in Multidisciplinary Gender Studies from the University of Cambridge and a Bachelors in Medical Anthropology from Stanford University, Anna translates her academic knowledge into clear and engaging stories. Her articles have been published by TIME Magazine, New York Magazine, CNN, Motherly, The Huffington Post, For Harriet, The Guardian, Darling Magazine, and Blavity. Anna's storytelling also takes form in her talks, including her TED Talk that has been viewed 2 million times, as well as the scripted and unscripted screen projects she has in development. Step into the shadowy crossroads where folklore, eyewitness testimony, and cinematic interpretation converge—because this week on the Scary Spirits Podcast, Greg guides us into the realm of the unexplained with a creature rooted not in distant legend, but in local lore. In the spirit of careful cryptozoological inquiry, Karen and Greg turn their attention to the 2023 found-footage curiosity Frogman, a film that dares to explore one of Ohio's most curious amphibian enigmas. Much like the documented patterns of regional monster sightings cataloged over decades, the Loveland Frogman—an enduring figure in Midwestern mystery—takes center stage as both subject and inspiration. With an investigator's eye and a storyteller's instinct, your hosts examine the film's narrative, authenticity, and its place within the broader tradition of cryptid cinema. Does Frogman offer compelling “evidence,” or does it merely echo the familiar rhythms of modern folklore? As Loren Coleman himself might suggest, the truth lies somewhere between belief and skepticism—and that tension is where the real fascination begins. Of course, no expedition into the unknown would be complete without ritual—so Karen and Greg complement their analysis with a carefully crafted “Frog Man” cocktail, a libation as enigmatic as the creature itself. Whether you're a seasoned cryptid enthusiast or a curious skeptic, this episode invites you to sip, speculate, and perhaps reconsider what might be lurking just beyond the edge of the known world. Tune in, keep your senses sharp, and remember: sometimes the strangest creatures are the ones closest to home. Frog Man Cocktail • vodka• orange juice• Mountain Dew Citrus Soda (alt: orange soda) Instructions: You just mix 1/3 vodka with 1/3 orange juice and 1/3 mountain dew in a beer mug. Source: cocktailbuilder.com A Brief Synopsis: In 1999, a 12-year-old named Dallas Kyle captures footage of the mythical creature, Frogman, but no one believes it is real. Twenty years later, he returns to the same place with his friends to obtain irrefutable proof that it exists. Some of the topics discussed and highlights of this episode include: Karen gives us some background on Loveland, Ohio and the Loveland Frogman. Greg makes a reference to the song “Getting Better” by The Beatles. We learn that no state in the United States has an official cryptid. Growth-hack advice keeps promising that the next strategy will fix everything, but then you realize maybe the real problem is the content itself. The conversation gets messy with RSS purists versus video-first creators, indie podcasters competing with funded networks, that strange feeling of watching the definition of "podcast" shift while you're still figuring out how to make one. There's frustration here, but also care for the people who keep showing up to make something real.Episode Highlights:[01:53] Spotlight Series Intro[06:29] Is Podcast Culture Changing[08:12] The Growing Success Gap[12:05] AI Redefines Podcasting[21:10] Podcast vs Creator Debate[23:55] RSS Control and Censorship[27:51] Metrics and Monetization Fight[32:29] Audio Wins vs Video[33:35] Future of Video Podcasting[35:37] Is Podcasting Still Healthy[36:43] Advice Space Too Noisy[38:44] Honest Feedback Matters[41:09] Instant Gratification Trap[43:38] Wins From the Week[51:28] Rapid Fire Wins[54:12] Sponsor Update and WrapLinks & Resources:Frank Bravo's show website:yourtechmakeover.com PodGlue beta launch:podglue.com/betaFeature Your Podcast on the Podcasting Morning Show:https://PodcastingMorningShow.com/spotlightThe Podcasting Morning Show:www.podcastingmorningshow.comWays to Watch or Listen: https://www.podcastingmorningshow.com/joinus/Meet the PMS Cast and Crew:https://podcastingmorningshow.com/peopleJoin The Empowered Podcasting Facebook Group:www.facebook.com/groups/empoweredpodcastingBook A Free Call With Marc:https://calendly.com/ironickmedia/freestrategycallApplication To Submit Your Show For Evaluation:https://podcastingmorningshow.com/evalJoin us every other Monday at 8 AM ET for the Obsession Worthy Podcasts:http://podcastingmorningshow.com/owp/Join us LIVE every weekday morning at 8 am ET (US) on Clubhouse: https://podcastingmorningshow.com/clubhouseEPC3 Speaker Application: https://empoweredpodcasting.com/speakersPowered by iRonickMedia.com and ContentCreatorsAccountant.comSend in your mailbag questions: https://www.podcastingmorningshow.com/contact/ or marc@ironickmedia.comWant to be a guest on The Podcasting Morning Show? It is common to hear people lament about how the world is getting worse and worse, and as we look at the news and what is happening around the world. Yet there are secular optimists who make a strong, data-driven case that in many ways the world is better than in the past. Marlin and Jaran engage with this idea and the concept of Christian optimism. They also look at how this interacts with historical events.A previous episode on thinking well about global politicsA Rival Nations article on Christian optimism “Christian Fundamentals (Mennonite Church, 1921)”“God of Grace and God of Glory““Rise Up, O Men of God”“Father Eternal, Ruler of Creation” Factfullness The Better Angels of Our Nature Data on declining poverty rates A source for data about a bettering worldThis is the 319th episode of Anabaptist Perspectives, a podcast, blog, and YouTube channel that examines various aspects of conservative Anabaptist life and thought. SHOW NOTES: This week on Encouragementology, we're asking an honest and deeply personal question: “Am I growing… or just getting better at coping?” So many people are functioning at a high level while quietly carrying exhaustion, disappointment, emotional numbness, or unresolved pain underneath the surface. In this episode, we explore how survival mode can slowly become an identity, how negativity can become a hidden personal narrative, and why awareness is often the first real step toward healing. Together, we unpack the difference between temporary relief and true emotional growth, while offering gentle ways to reconnect with yourself, your emotions, and the possibility of something healthier ahead. Here is what we unpack together: The hidden difference between functioning well and genuinely healing How coping mechanisms can quietly become personality traits Why chronic negativity often develops without us noticing The role self-awareness plays in emotional growth and recovery How disappointment and emotional exhaustion shape our daily narrative Why people sometimes drift away from consistently negative energy The difference between temporary relief and lasting healing How emotional suppression affects connection, joy, and fulfillment Practical ways to interrupt unhealthy emotional patterns Why choosing happiness often begins with willingness, not immediate feelings CHALLENGE: Listen closely to your own narrative. Notice the phrases, reactions, and emotional patterns that have quietly become “normal” for you, and ask yourself honestly whether they're helping you grow or simply helping you survive. Choose one small act of healing instead of avoidance. One honest conversation. One moment of reflection. One interruption to the cycle. I Know YOU Can Do It!

Most graphic designers think getting better at design is the answer.Better work, portfolio, ideas. So why are so many still stuck? Still overlooked. Still underpaid. Still sitting in meetings while someone else calls the shots. In this episode of The Angry Designer Podcast, we break down the real reason designers hit a ceiling and why doubling down on execution is actually holding you back. Most people with OCD focus on the visible rituals — washing, checking, or avoiding. But the compulsions that most often keep the loop alive are invisible: they happen entirely inside your head. In this episode, Matt Codde, LCSW, breaks down the five mental compulsions that he sees most often in his work with OCD and anxiety clients — behaviors like rumination, mental checking, mental reviewing, mental reassurance, and mental neutralization. If you've ever wondered why your OCD isn't getting better even though you've cut back on physical rituals, this episode is for you. Matt explains that 80–90% of most people's compulsive behavior is mental — and most therapists never even address it. Understanding these patterns is the first step toward breaking the loop for good.Matt also explains why the distinction between the intrusive thought (the obsession — outside your control) and everything you do afterward (the compulsion — within your agency) is the key insight that empowers real recovery.
We've got new data on the Spring housing market, and it's…well, complicated. The monthly data shows more of the same: a sluggish housing market with negative home price growth. But zoom in, and the weekly data tells a different story. Pending sales and mortgage applications are ticking higher, and we've just crossed into what could be the strongest buyer's market we've seen in years, with sellers outnumbering buyers in 38 of the 49 largest major metro areas. This can only mean two things: deals are getting better, and investors have more negotiating power than they've had in a while. As for whether a Spring homebuying season is taking shape, it depends on who you ask. Tensions in the Middle East, surging inflation, and housing affordability challenges are keeping many would-be homebuyers in limbo. But investors who have the means to buy, are actively looking in strong buyer's markets, and are analyzing deals conservatively are seeing a new window of opportunity. The question is, how long will that window stay open? In This Episode We Cover Why real estate deals are getting better, despite a sluggish housing market What “positive” weekly data means for the potential of a Spring homebuying season How tensions in the Middle East and rising inflation numbers could affect housing How investors can take advantage as the U.S. flips to a strong buyer's market What happens to mortgage rates once new Fed chair Kevin Warsh is confirmed And So Much More! Happy Earth Day! This week on Getting Better, Jonathan sits down with plant biologist, author, and educator Dr. Beronda Montgomery for a grounding conversation about nature's healing power and America's Black botanical legacy. Together, they explore why reconnecting with green spaces can be so transformative for our mental, emotional, and physical well-being, and how practices like urban gardening and container planting can help us build a more meaningful relationship with the natural world—no sprawling backyard required. Jonathan and Dr. Montgomery also dig into the deeper wisdom held in landscapes, plants, and history itself—examining interdependence, the ways trees and land can testify to the past, and the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans in botany and agriculture, alongside the foundational knowledge of Indigenous communities. They touch on the significance of willow trees, the meaning of Sankofa, and what it means to look back in order to carry wisdom forward in a powerful episode about healing, remembrance, purpose, and the responsibility of growing a better future together. Dr. Montgomery's new book When Trees Testify: Science, Wisdom, History, and America's Black Botanical History (Henry Holt, 2026) is out now. BIO: Dr. Beronda L. Montgomery is a writer, science communicator, and researcher. She has spent more than 20 years in higher education, most recently as vice president for academic affairs (2022–2024) and professor of biology (2022–present) at Grinnell College. Montgomery studies how plants and photosynthetic bacteria perceive, respond to, and are impacted by environments in which they exist. She is the author of Lessons from Plants (Harvard University Press, 2021) as well as her newest book When Trees Testify: Science, Wisdom, History, and America's Black Botanical History (Henry Holt, 2026). Trees stand at the intersection of plant knowledge, Black agricultural history, and collective memories of trauma and triumph intertwined. In When Trees Testify, Montgomery explores the roles that seven tree species—pecan, willow, oak, poplar, mulberry, sycamore, and apple—along with the cotton shrub have played in the lives of Black Americans from their enslavement in the United States to the present. She also explores the science of these plants as well as the sometimes-fraught relationship that African Americans have with agriculture and plants. Disagreements are everywhere right now - and let's be honest, they can get messy fast. But what if arguing didn't have to wreck your relationships… or your nervous system? This week on Getting Better, JVN sits down with Dr. Julia Minson, a Harvard decision scientist and leading expert on disagreements, to unpack why we clash, how we can do it better, and the small shifts that make a huge difference. From dinner table debates to full-on conflict spirals, we're getting into the psychology behind why being “right” isn't always the win you think it is. Together, they explore the gold standard for healthy disagreement, where conflict actually comes from, and the real-life tools you can start using today to stay grounded, curious, and connected - even when you deeply disagree.
